"When hearts are aglow"

By A Crazy Girl

Chapter 6

When she listened to the bell, Sakura opened the door and made the boys enter the house. She sweetly smiled to Tracey and asked him if he wanted anything to drink, while Ash and Brock neared the table where Misty, Lily, Satsuki and Gary were playing cards.

-         Hey, guys. Can we join the game? – Said Ash

-         We’re just finishing in a minute or two, but you can sit here until we do – Said Misty.

-         Alright. Gary, I didn’t know you were coming too.

-         Yeah, well. Satsuki invited me this evening, how could I refuse? – Gary said.

-         Do you need any help with food? – Asked Brock.

-         No, thanks. We’ve already made some pizzas. – Satsuki answered.

-         Actually, like there’s still no desert. – Added Lily – Would you help me with it, Brock?

-         Of course, I’d love to.

Lily and Brock went to the kitchen together, there was a happy look on their faces.

-         Those two are going to make a great couple. – Said Gary.

-         I hope I could have someone who cares for me that much someday. – Said Satsuki.

-         Well, you never know when it will happen. Maybe sooner than you think. – Answered Gary.

Strange sounds came from the kitchen. Everyone in the living room heard laughter and screamings.

-         Is everything alright, guys? – Shouted Satsuki to Brock and Lily.

-         Yeah, don’t worry! Everything’s like too perfect here! – Shouted Brock.

-         Seems like they won’t need our help for a long while. – Ash said giggling.

-         I’d love to be that busy. – Misty said, also giggling.

-         Yeah, I’d love you to be that busy. – Whispered Ash in her ear.

Before she could blush she tried to ignore him and quickly changed the subject.

-         Sakura...! Tell me... how’s your espeon? I haven’t seen it yet.

-         Oh, it’s very good. It’s resting upstairs now, yesterday we had a difficult battle.

-         Hey, Sakura. You never had a battle with Misty, did you? Why don’t you come to the gym someday and have a good one? – Proposed Ash.

-         Yeah, that’s a good idea. You can come whenever you want. – Said Misty

They talked for about half an hour until they sat at the table and had dinner.

-         So, Ash. What’s on in your life? – Asked Gary

-         Well...

He looked at Misty, knowing that if he had anything to say, I’d be just about her. She also looked at him thinking “What’s on in Ash’s life? He sure won’t tell anything of what’s been happening between us, if anything has really happened.”

-         Except from some new pokémon I’ve caught and a couple of things at the gym, there are really no news.

-         I guessed so. I’m sorry, boy, but you should have some new adventures to vary. Why don’t you get a girlfriend to try something different than just pokémon stuff? Or is it that you already have one?

Ash looked at Misty once more. He looked for an answer in her eyes. He knew they weren’t couple but, they’ve lately been so near to it. But would she agree with that thought?

-         No... not yet. – Ash answered. – How about you?

-         Well, there’s someone very special for me and we all know her. Just for personal circumstances we aren’t together yet.

Everybody looked at Satsuki and she felt quite embarrased, so Sakura changed the topic...

-         Listen... Tracey and I are going to the cinema this weekend, do you know any good movie to recommend us?

-         We went to the cinema a few days ago, right Mist? – Said Ash

-         Yeah... – Misty answered

-         Really? What did you see? – Asked Sakura

-         “Hidden Feelings.” It’s a romantic one, you probably heard about it. – She said.

-         I did. What is it about? Did you like it?

Both Ash and Misty stood speechless, thinking. They didn’t know what to say, they didn’t even know if they liked the movie.

-         ...Hello? – Sakura realized they were lost in their thoughts.

-         Hum... yeah. It was nice. I’ll never forget what I felt while I saw that movie. – Ash made an insinuation to Misty.

-         Oh, Really Ash? Then why don’t you tell them the plot? – Challenged Misty.

-         Well... it was actually the best movie I’ve ever seen since I had never felt I could share the same sensations than the characters.

-         Wow, you deeply loved it. – Joked Misty

-         You loved it too... – Said Ash.

-         I see it’s good, but... what is it about? – Insisted Sakura

-         Well, it’s... about...

Misty sent him a “you have no idea” glance, so he made up the story.

-         A girl who is in love with her best friend, and when he’s going to kiss her she runs away for an unknown reason!

Of course he was talking about Misty. He wasn’t angry but intrigued, so he dropped the hint, and she recieved it.

-         So he wants to figure out why she did it. – He went on.

-         Oh, thank you for the information. Now I really wanna see it. – Said Sakura.

-         You sure don’t. – Said Misty a bit angry. – It doesn’t have a happy ending.

-         Oh, but it probably worths it. – Said Tracey.

-         Not so much. Why don’t you see any other? There have to be some better ones. Don’t you think, Ash?

-         ...Sure. – He said, not knowing why she said that.

-         Ok, then. – Tracey said.

While everyone else were ending dinner, Ash tried to attract Misty’s attention. As he was sitting next to her, he held her hand under the table where no one could see them. First she didn’t react to it, but then she gave up and held his hand too. After all, she would die for something like that.

-         God, I don’t know what he’s trying to do, but I love it. Please, don’t let go of my hand. – She looked at him in a shy, sweet way.

-         Are you ok, Misty? – Asked Sakura

-         She looks like daydreaming. – Lily joked.

-         What? No, I’m not!

She looked at Ash when no one was watching and said in a very low voice:

-         Follow me...

-         What? Where? – Said Ash

-         Excuse me, I need to get some fresh air, do you mind if I go outside for a little while? – She asked.

-         Oh, no problem. – Sakura said.

She stood up and left, hoping Ash would go after her. She really needed to talk.

-         Oh, no! I totally forgot! I... bought some chocolates to bring here, I can’t believe I left them home.

-         Oh, don’t worry Ash. There will be another occasion. – Said Brock.

-         But I really wanted to eat them, they’re so sweet. – Ash insisted.

-         So, what?

-         I’ll go for them.

-         You’re going now? It’s cold out there.

-         I have my jacket. See you all later.

Ash left the house and met Misty on the street. They began to walk.

-         And well... what was your excuse? – Asked Misty

-         We’re gonna have to go home for some chocolates mum did this morning.

-         Allright. Is your mum home now?

-         No, she’s not. She’s at her boyfriend’s.

-         What?

-         Yeah, can you believe it?

-         Well, everyone deserves a second chance, specially when it’s about love.

-         Wanna talk about it?

-         ‘Bout your mom?

-         About love...

He put his left arm around her waist, hugging her softly, and his right hand gave hers a little squeeze. Misty just let him do it.

-         About us... – He went on.

-         Us...?

-         You know... there’s something you didn’t tell me yet.

-         What is it?

-         You know exactly what it is... why did you refuse me, Misty?

-         Oh, Ash... that again.

-         Come on, you won’t hold it back for long even if you wanted to.

-         It’s complicated... I really don’t feel much like to talk about it now... nor today... oh, can we go on talking at your house? I’m freezing...

-         Sure, take this... – He put his jacket on her shoulders.

-         Thank you...

She embraced him with her both arms for the rest of the walk. They spoke no word until they arrived. Ash opened the door and let Misty get in first.

-         Mmm... it’s so much warm in here. – Said Misty.

-         Yeah... I’ll go to look for the chocolates before I forget. Sit on the couch, I’ll come in a second.

-         Ok.

Ash went into the kitchen. He soon came back with a little packet and two glasses and sat next to her.

-         Here... I brought you orange juice.

-         Oh, thanks.

They sat on the couch for a while, not exchanging a word, but glancing and smiling several times at each other. Ash remembered he had to give something important to Misty, but it was in a pocket of the jacket she had on her shoulders. He neared his hand to get it trying Misty not to take notice, but she saw him and thought he was trying to touch her, so she stood up.

-         Were you Ash trying to touch me?

-         No, I wasn’t!

-         Then what were you doing?

-         Nothing! It’s just... well there’s something in that pocket I wanted to get. Don’t be so happy I wasn’t trying to touch you, I didn’t have that intention.

-         I know you had that in mind, it wouldn’t be the first time. And what makes you think I would be happy if you did so?

-         Oh, please...! Misty, I don’t wanna argue now, really there’s something in that pocket and it’s for you...

She then shut up, not believing him much she put her hand into the pocket, and realized there really was something. It was a little box and she handed it to Ash.

-         What is it?

-         Well... it used to be of my mom, but it’s yours now.

Ash opened the box facing it to Misty. There she saw a sparkling heart-shaped rubi necklace.

-         Oh my God!!! ...Ash this is so beautiful!

-         Not as much as you...

Misty kept silent. She couldn’t believe he was giving it to her, and those last words he had said made her get lost in his eyes, but Ash suddenly came back to reality.

-         Why don’t you get it tried on?

-         Ash, I don’t think I should take it, I mean... it’s too much, do you really wanna give it to me?

-         I do, I’m sure...

He went behind her back, moved her hair over one of her shoulders and buttoned the jewell up which matched her eyes around her neck. She sighed as he turned again to be in front of her, but he never let go of the necklace, so his fingers were then between the rubi and her skin.

-         You look gorgeous...

-         Ash... what does this mean? Why are you giving it to me and why now?

-         What? I’m not allowed to give you presents?

-         Yes, but... you never gave me something like this...

-         Up to now... – After thinking a while, bowing his head – Misty, I’d love to see you using it at Christmas, it would mean so much to me...

-         I will.

-         Thank you...

-         No, thanks to you, Ash.

-         What for?

-         For... everything. You were always there for me, you always cared...

A tear fell down her cheek and Ash wiped it. She embraced him strongly, nervously, and he embraced her back.

-         You’re so important to me... – She admitted, and then she finally said under her breath – I need you... Don’t you ever leave me, please...

He pushed sweetly her head to his shoulder, kissed her cheek and whispered:

-         I need you too...

Butterfries were eating them alive. They didn’t move for a minute until inopportunely the video-phone rang. The fright made them brake the embrace.

-         No way... – Ash complained.

-         You better answer.

-         No, just let it ring. I hope it’s wrong number.

When the machine stopped, Ash looked at the chocolates’ packet and grabed it.

-         Still willing for a dessert?

-         Shouldn’t we wait until we’re back at Sakura’s?

-         What if we don’t go back?

Misty looked at him in surprise. He then offered her a sweet taking it to her mouth, but he couldn’t believe she did accept it.

-         Why? What would we do then? – She asked suggestively.

-         Well, how about... coming clean?

-         You mean you’re hiding something...? Tell me, then. What do you have to say, Ash?

Ash was very nervous, but he had to do it at that exact moment, he knew he shouldn’t miss an opportunity like that. He looked into Misty’s eyes, and he could tell she was waiting for him to say it. Deep down he knew that she knew what he was going to say, but she really needed to hear the words. Three words he was ready to say...
