Prologue

~~~~~~
“…And in further news tonight, a mysterious figure has been seen in the Johto area, where the most recent attack by Team Rocket has been centered upon.  Witnesses claim to have seen this person dressed in a long, black cloak, though he disappeared when they tried to approach him. Cloaks, as everyone knows, symbolize the Masters Circle, the elite group of pokemon masters with special elemental powers and are strictly forbidden to wear for anyone not of the Circle.  We will bring you more on this subject as we continue to receive information.  On another note, the Alpha have destroyed 3 more cities in Johto, among them, the notorious Goldenrod.  Circle masters and trainers are trying hard to prevent the downfall of the entire Johto region, though the prospect seems pretty bleak.  This is STS bringing you the latest updates on Project Alpha. ”
“Well, there ya have it.  Johto’s gonna fall any day now, I sez we pack up our stuff and git to Kanto afore the Alpha arrive.”  The old farmer turned to his wife, who was sitting quietly in an old armchair, knitting a sweater.
“I’m too old, Ben, we’ll never get to Kanto in time.  You know that and I know that, I want to live out the rest of my old life in peace.”  The woman sighed, putting up her things.  “You leave this stuff to the Circle, it ain’t none of our business.”
“I want peace too, Emma.  But how we gonna git it when them Alphas are on the loose?”
“We’ll talk about this tomorrow, its time for bed.”  Emma replied decisively, getting up and leaving the room.
‘Tomorrow might be too late’, thought Ben as he too prepared to go to sleep.
Soft snores could barely be heard outside the little house.  The farmer and his wife had gone to bed not talking, both thinking their own thoughts.  The farm was blanketed in a peaceful quiet, broken only by the soft hooting of some Hoothoots.
Suddenly, a pair of red eyes appeared in the bushes, followed quickly by 4 more pairs.  They watched the little farmhouse intently, as if waiting for some signal.
“Go Alpha!”
The yell sliced through the night as the farm suddenly sprang to life.  2 doglike pokemon, each bearing a red ring on their forearms, rushed forward, knocking down the farmhouse door, pushing down any obstacles in their way.  They could smell the fear of their prey, and were excited about what was about to happen.   The other 3 pokemon, a Kangaskhan and 2 Bellsprout, headed toward the Mareep pasture, causing the terrified sheep pokemon to cry loudly into the air.
Ben and Emma had sprung up out of bed as soon as they heard the shout.  With terror guiding their movements, they ran incredibly fast toward the window, still in their night clothes.  They could hear the Houndour scratching at the door, trying to get in.  Emma lifted the clasp off the window and tried to open it but it wouldn’t budge.
“Hurry!”  Ben eyed the door, it was starting to splinter.  Growls could be heard through the wood, sounding more desperate by the minute.
“I’m trying to, the window’s stuck!”  Desperation was heard in her voice, along with a great amount of fear.
Suddenly, the door crashed down and the pair of Houndour, their red eyes gleaming, came bounding in.  Ben and Emma waited helplessly as the Houndour leapt upon them.
A black shadow hid behind a tree near the pasture as it surveyed the scene of carnage in front of it.  The once neat little farmhouse was now ablaze, the light coming from it scattering on the ground, where 2 forms could barely be made out, slumped on the ground, still embracing each other.  In the darkness, the Mareep were scattered all over the place, their blood staining the ground a darker shade of night.
The black shadow grinned and called back the 5 Alpha Pokemon.  As he stepped out of the shadows, the fire cast flickering light on his features, revealing him to be wearing a black uniform with a big red R emblazoned in the middle.
Several Days Later
~~~~~~

“Brock, yo, wake up man!”  Kiyo shouted at his sleepy roommate.  “We’re needed at the Hall in 10 minutes.”

“Shut up, I wanna go back to sleep,” moaned a sleepy 23 year old with bronze skin and spiked up brown hair.  He had his face buried in his pillow, which lay on the top bed of the bunk.  Asides from the bunk bed, there was just a sink with a cracked mirror over it, and 2 drawers.

“I hear all the girls in the Circle are gonna be there,”  Kiyo whispered in his ear as he watched his roommate rocket off his bed, get dressed, and eat breakfast, all in the space of 2 seconds.

Mnmph, why, crunch, didn’t, gulp, you, slurp, tell me?”  He turned around to face Kiyo (and lo and behold, no eyes!), a 27 year old man with a very muscular body.

“You wouldn’t have woken up even if a snorlax sat on you!  Well, I’m ready, see you there,  Kiyo put on his orange cloak and headed out the small, metal door.  He had to stoop sightly to fit through.

“Man, you’d expect the Circle to have huge luxurious suites for their masters, but no, all we have is barely bigger than a bathroom, and we have to share it with someone too.  Hmm, I wonder what the ladies’ rooms are like.”  This was grumbled on his way out.

‘I totally agree,’ thought Brock as he wolfed down his breakfast at lightning speed, grabbed his brown cloak, and sped out the door after his friend.

The Masters Circle was located near Indigo Plateau.  Consisting of 50 tenant houses set in a ring, a giant Hall in the center of the ring, and its own little city toward the side, it was home to more than 700 Masters.  This day, all 700+ of them were gathered in the Hall for an emergency meeting.

“Attention all Masters!”  Lance bellowed into the loudspeaker.  The Hall, filled with hundreds of people all wearing different colors of cloaks, instantly quieted down.  They had all been wondering what this emergency meeting was about and were discussing rumors that they had heard.

“Please give your attention to Master Richie, World’s Greatest Pokemon Master!”  A young, well built man, about 20 years old walked on stage.  He had reddish brown hair, and had a Pikachu at his feet.  Applause rang around the giant hall as the Masters all welcomed him.

“I’m sure all of you want to know why you have been called here.”  Barely had he spoken, and the room was filled with excited whispers and talk again.

“Quiet, quiet! Well, you all know that over the last 4 years, Team Rocket has been attacking every region except Kanto.  They have their unstoppable forces, the Alpha Pokemon to aid them with this mission of world domination.  We of the Masters Circle are the most experienced, best pokemon trainers in the world, and we have been trying to stop Team Rockets invasion.”

“Get on with it already, we know all this!”  An impatient shout came from the back of the room.  Everyone turned their heads to find the culprit.  He was a lean, muscular young man also around 20.  He had spiky brown hair and wore a smug grin on his face.

Gary, you rascal, don’t interrupt me, who’s the World’s Greatest Pokemon Master here?”  Richie Yelled back to him.

“Yeah, good one, haha,” Gary retorted, his smug grin gone.

“Anyway, on to today’s discussion.  Johto, the region west of here, the second biggest region in the world, has been taken over by Team Rocket.  That leaves only one place left they haven’t attacked.  Yes, Kanto.”

The hall exploded.

“As you all know, this is the Masters Circle headquarters.  We currently have 700 Masters living here, with about 200 more scattered throughout the region.  As for the ones in Johto, well, lets just say we need to have a moment of silence for them.”  Here, Richie’s voice broke, and the entire hall fell into a deep silence.  People were remembering all the brave Masters who had tried to save Johto, the Orange Islands (Orange Archipelago), and the other regions.  Some had been friends, some family, but all were connected, as if the Circle created a bond within all its members.

“You all remember Bruno and Agatha.  They were part of the Elite Four.  Also Koga and his sister, and all the other brave Masters that have died or been captured by Team Rocket.”

An awkward silence filled the room, as every trainer there had battled against the Elite Four one time or another.

“But there is good news, 3 of our top Masters: Morty, Jasmine, and Lorelei, have returned to Kanto safely, due to help from a mysterious stranger dressed in a black cloak.  You may have heard about him in the news, though not much is yet know about this stranger.  Any other questions you have may go to your sub-division leaders.  There is a handout on the new leaders for each of you on your way out.”  With that, Richie smiled at his audience and stepped back down.  He retired to his room and called all the leaders to him.

The Masters all filed out the doors at the end of the hall, each receiving a handout that read:

“Is everything done and on schedule?”  A sinister voice said, his face hidden in shadows.  In his lap was a Persian, whom he seem very fond of, petting and stroking it.

“Yes, sir,” replied a blue haired man dressed in a black suit with a red R on it, along with a beret.  His voice sounded like sandpaper being rubbed together.

“In fact, sir, we finished a bit earlier than planned, Johto was too easy.”  Grinned a blond Rocket dressed in the same outfit as her male partner.

“And what about Ashton Ketchum, have you found him yet?”  The voice continued, with a hint of amusement.

“Ah, you see sir, well, um…”

“Incompetent fools!  We cannot let him get far, he knows too much, you will catch him and bring him to me, dead or alive, I don’t care.  He should be easy to get, especially after what I did to him.”  The voice chuckled, then became hard.  “What are you fools still doing here? Go, quickly, and don’t come back until you have him.
