Heart lock

There was a beach just a couple of blocks from the Cerulean City Gym. He snorted at the cliché of it. Ash slowly adjusted the cap on his head and motioned to pikachu that it was time to go. The small rodent did the closet thing it could to a frown and leapt on his back.

Walking slowly, the Pokémon Master let the water wash over his feet with his hands buried deep inside his pocket to keep warm. A finger came in contact with something cold and metal and he pulled the strange object out. Ash smiled when he realized what it was.

“What is that Misty?” he asked, confusion evident in his brown eyes.

The girl in front of him laughed mirthlessly, “It’s a locket Ash,”

“It’s a heart,” he answered, his nose scrunching in distaste.

“So it is, one day, return it back to me. To the Cerulean City Gym, where it belongs,”

Pikachu’s ears perked up, and Ash tore his eyes from the glinting gold locket to the direction Pikachu was pointing at. Walking faster to the gathering crowd in front him, he asked the man wearing a fancy suit sitting idly on the side.

“It’s a wedding, son,” the man laughed and hiccupped before pouring some whiskey down his throat again.

Ash looked up and he smiled when he saw a familiar face. Pikachu leapt down and settled itself between the newcomer’s legs.

“Hey, pikachu,” greeted the tall man, he scooped the yellow rat as it squealed in delight.

“Brock,” Ash called.

“Ash,”

They stood regarding each other with an uncomfortable air of understanding.

“A beach wedding? It’s beautiful,”

Brock smirked, “It’s her dream wedding. She wanted you to come, you know? You should go see her,”

Ash shrugged, “Nah… I’m just here to return her heart back to her,” he shoved the cold object into Brock’s hand.

Brock opened his hand and laughed bitterly, his voice sounded almost hollow, “You were, but thanks for bringing it back, she has been looking for this for years.”

The groom turned around and walked away from a confused Pokémon Master. Ash craned his neck when the music started and the bride with all her radiance emerged from the tent. Through a sense of sheer will on his part, she turned and their eyes locked. A jolt of electricity ran through him as he finally understood.

Her heart was here, where he belonged, on her wedding day and 6 years too late.

….

He smiled.
