POKEMON Golden Sun Series Two: A Heart of Gold

Aspendragon

Part Thirty-Five

The Prize at the End of the Rainbow

The next morning after the parade came into town; the Trainer Triad woke up with a great deal of energy.

"There’s still time to sleep," Squall mumbled as he threw a random poke’ball at the alarm clock Coco set before they went to bed. Which surprised them all since Coco looked like a zombie as they changed into their pajamas, not even caring if they’re in the same room since it was dark anyway.

The poke’ball snapped open and Torch jumped out. Torch opened an eye than yawned and tried to go back to sleep.

"No…we better get up, we need to get to Erika anyway, I wonder where the gym is?" Coco said, waking up slowly as she stood up. "Come on guys!" she shouted suddenly, making Peppermint, Torch, Squall, and Bayline jump out of their skins.

"All right! All right! We’re up!" Bayline and Squall shouted in unison.

By the time they finished dressing ate some breakfast in the Pokemon Center’s cafeteria while their pokemon were being healed and fed, they soon made their way out into Celadon City.

"Wow, there’s a lot of people out here," Coco said. Peppermint was on top of her hat.

"Yeah, but how are we going to find the gym in such a big city as this?" Bayline asked, Squall got out his guidebook.

"It says in here that Celadon City Gym is south of the Pokemon Center, and if it helps, it has a second name called Erika’s Perfumes and Scents. It must be a perfume shop and a gym rolled up in one." Squall said.

"Perfume!" Bayline shouted, Coco and Squall sweat-dropped.

"Perfume gives me a headache," Coco stated, Bayline stuck her tongue out at her.

"Well, since we’ll be at a gym, you two can battle, I’ll explore the perfume shop." She said.

"But what about your battle?" Squall asked.

"Oh well…I don’t want to battle anymore," Bayline said, Coco and Squall looked from each other than at her, letting it sink in.

"WHAT!?!" they shouted together. Bayline sweat-dropped.

"Well, put it this way, I was never suppose to become a trainer till I was ten, but I’m only eight and I can’t register for any leagues till I’m an official trainer." Bayline said.

"Oh, good point." Coco admitted.

"All right, now we don’t have to waste anymore time watching worthless battles!" Squall announced, earning himself a lump on the head.

"I’m just as strong as you are!" she said.

"No you aren’t! You’re the one who said I was stronger back at Cinnabar Island you pip-squeak!" Squall shouted back. Coco sweat-dropped.

"Now please, let’s hurry to the gym! Where we can all get badges, perfume, and my brother’s medicine," Coco reasoned.

"All right! Let’s go!" The fighting pair said than marched ahead, with a nervous Coco and Peppermint following.

Not far off, a pair of binoculars was watching the trio closely. They gleamed than went behind the thick brush of the woods he hid behind.

"Shadow Executive Hilary to Rocket Executive Claudia, are you ready?" the Shadow Executive asked into a walkie-talkie.

"Roger that Shadow Executive Hilary, we’ll be ready for them." The sinister voice of Claudia said back.

"All right, over and out!" Hilary said, Claudia clicked the off button. Soon, it’ll be pay back time Coco Tradet! She thought as she patted her companion on the head.

"This must be it," Squall said as they approached a large building that seemed to be a greenhouse. But it had Celadon Gym on the front banner, so they ignored the appearance.

"I bet Erika’s a grass pokemon trainer." Bayline guessed, Coco agreed.

"Let’s hurry and get this over with so we can get that medicine to your brother," Squall said, Coco nodded and walked up to the door and opened it.

"Hello dear young one! May I interest you in some of our all-time new perfume! Would you like cinnamon or apple? No! Wait! How about banana and cherry?" a woman no older than fifteen with pink hair up in two fluffy ponytails and green eyes. She wore a purple T-shirt and a short, purple skirt with a white apron. She was holding four different perfume bottles and spraying them all over the three.

"Isn’t it a little early to overwhelm my scent glands?" Coco asked as she and Squall backed away, Bayline just took it in and was already jumping into questions.

"What else do you have?" Bayline asked, the girl smiled.

"If you follow me you shall see!" she said cheerfully as she marched in with Bayline following happily, Coco and Squall walked in cautiously. Peppermint was sticking to every scent her nose could get as they entered. She once leaned away from her shoulder too far towards a burning candle that released the scent of white plum; Coco was lucky to catch her by the tail.

"Excuse me, where is Erika?" Coco asked quickly, wanting to get out of the room desperately.

"She’s in the gym," the girl with pink hair said as she got more samples out for Bayline, who waved good-bye to them. Coco led the way through the store and towards two glass, automatic doors that read on a sign 'Celadon Battlefield’.

"I can’t believe she would buy perfume over a battle," Squall growled as they walked through.

"Well, she did make a good point when she said she couldn’t get into the league even when she had all badges anyway." Coco pointed out; Squall sighed as they walked through the forest. "Hey look!" she spotted a small purple pokemon with four round, orange petal-like objects on its head. It seemed to be drooling.

"Gloom, the Weed pokemon," Dexter explained from her pocket, "The fluid that oozes from its mouth isn’t drool; it is a nectar that is used to attract prey."

"Interesting," Squall said as he eyed it.

"Gloom gloom," it said.

"Hello Cutie!" Coco cooed as she walked up towards it and squatted, Peppermint landed on the ground and squeaked hello.

"You call that cute?" Squall asked, Coco seemed to be ignoring him. But than he noticed she was talking in Gloom’s native tongue, there was no way he would understand her at this point. "Might as well begin looking for Erika. ERIKA! ERIKA! WE’RE HERE TO CHALLENGE YOU!" he shouted among the forest.

It seemed to be a greenhouse, a large forest inside a glass dome. It was kind of quiet besides the chirping of Grass pokemon around them.

"So, do you know where Erika is?" Coco asked Gloom.

"Gloom gloom!" Yes! Follow me, Gloom cried as she began walking away.

"Hey Squall, come on, Gloom’s gonna show us where Erika is." Coco told him, he stopped shouting and ran after Gloom with her and Peppermint.

"Hmmmm…hmhmhm…" Erika hummed as she weeded her garden in the middle of the greenhouse-like gym. Several oddishs and a paras were helping as well. She stopped when she spotted Gloom emerge from the bushes. "Why hello Gloom, oh! And who are these kids?" she asked as she spotted Coco and Squall jump out of the bushes. Peppermint went up next to Gloom.

"I’m Coco Tradet from Pallet, and this is my friend Squall Togoroti, we’re here for a gym battle." She stated, Squall stared at her. He thought they were there for Errol’s medicine too. She must be saving it till the end of the battles.

"Sure, I would love too. I haven’t had a good challenge in days. Mind following me to the battlefield?" Erika asked, as she stood up and walked away with Gloom on her heels. The other two followed. She led them to a clearing in the gym, which looked remarkably strange basically because they hadn’t seen a clear spot besides the garden.

"Gloom, would you mind fetching our referee?" Erika asked Gloom, she nodded and hurried off. Than Erika turned to Squall and Coco.

"Whom am I battling first?" she asked, Coco stepped up.

"I will, but can I first ask of a favor?" she asked.

"Certainly,"

"I have a sick brother at home, and the hospital says that the only one who can make a cure is you, they also said that you could make one from this poison that was inserted in his bloodstream." Coco said as she handed Erika the sample of poison.

"I will, but to make a sample would take at least a day. How about you two battle me and than you come back the day after tomorrow?" Erika suggested.

"Perfect," Coco said. That’s when Gloom returned with a male referee with a short brown haircut and violet eyes. He only wore a red and white striped T-shirt and blue shorts, but Erika said he was suitable for the job. Coco than took her side of the field, and Erika did the same. As Squall sat down on the bench behind Coco, he noticed behind him was a window from the perfume shop. Bayline was looking out of it with the pink-haired girl behind her.

"This will be a two-on-two pokemon battle. Both competitors except the gym leader may substitute or heal their pokemon! When two of the opponent’s pokemon are unable to battle, the opponent wins! BEGIN!" the referee shouted.

"I choose you Firestorm!" Coco cried as she released her fiery chameleon.

"A fire-type huh? I was only completely expecting it! Go! Tangela!" A pokemon that looked more like a bush of black worms than anything appeared wearing two red shoes and a set of eyes peering out from the inside.

"Tangela, the Vine Pokemon," Dexter beeped without warning, "Its whole body is swathed with wide vines that are similar to seaweed. These vines shake as it walks."

"Don’t be cocky Coco, I may have Grass-types, but I assure you that I had a lot of practice with Fire-types." Erika warned.

"All right, but don’t expect anything less from Firestorm, she packs a lot of wallop!" Coco warned in return.

"I wouldn’t dream of it! Go Tangela! Use Vine Whip!" Erika ordered.

"Tanngee!" Tangela cried as it than launched several vines out at Firestorm.

"Jump to the left than use Ember!" Coco shouted. Firestorm jumped out of their path and shot several ember balls at Tangela, they hit directly. But the burn only effected Tangela a bit. "Not bad for a Grass-type! Charge at it and than use Scratch!"

"Use Slam Tangela!" Erika shouted. The sound of the two’s body’s colliding into one another was nonetheless sickening, but they both kept on pushing at one another. Both began sweating, Tangela began to pant as Firestorm’s teeth were now clenched.

"Now that it’s up close! Use Flamethrower!" Coco shouted, Firestorm opened its mouth wide and released a blast of fiery inferno at the noodle pokemon. When the inferno cleared, the pokemon was charred. After a few blinks, it fell backwards, defeated.

"The winner of this match is Charmeleon!" the referee shouted.

"Great job Firestorm!" Coco congratulated, but she didn’t notice Firestorm’s sprained shoulder after she charged into Tangela.

"Return Tangela!" Erika said, as she recalled the pokemon back into it’s poke’ball. "You deserve a good rest, now go! Gloom!"

"Gloom gloom!" Gloom cried as she ran into battle that’s when Erika noticed Firestorm’s shoulder. She supposed she would wait till Coco noticed it too and recalled her pokemon, but she soon realized she didn’t.

"The second round will begin! Charmeleon versus Gloom! Begin!" the referee shouted.

"Gloom! Stun Spore!" Erika cried she didn’t want to hurt Firestorm any further and wanted it unable to battle. Gloom jumped into the air and than spun, releasing clouds of yellow powder.

"Whirl it away with a might Ember!" Coco shouted, Firestorm winced but than bellowed bullet-sized embers at the powder. The powder slowly dissolved into the balls of fire and than it turned out to be a real firestorm as the powder caught fire and fell to the ground. Firestorm’s body wasn’t effected as much by the flames as Gloom did who now acted like she was engulfed and running around frantically.

"Calm down Gloom! Use your flower to avoid your body having any contact with the fire." Erika said, the idea half-worked, Gloom’s purple body wasn’t effected, but her flower was burned badly. Coco noticed and decided not to waste anymore time.

"Firestorm! Use Flamethrower!" Coco shouted, Firestorm’s head went back than lunged forward with a horrible wince, but the attack only got half of Gloom’s body.

"Gloom! Can you still battle?" Erika asked, when Firestorm winced, this time both Squall and Coco noticed her condition.

"Firestorm! Are you okay?" Coco asked, she didn’t know that her shoulder was sprained, so when Firestorm nodded. She continued the battle, but Squall certainly knew her shoulder was sprained and paining her a lot.

Just for Coco, he thought grimly as Coco ordered a Tackle.

"Use Absorb!" Erika shouted.

"Gloom!" Gloom cried as her flower glowed an eerie green, as soon as Firestorm’s body glowed as well, small green balls of energy were drained from her body and sucked into hers. Firestorm feel to her knees, but her right arm caught her from falling the rest of the way; her left shoulder made her wince from the effort.

"Are you okay Firestorm? I’ll recall you if you want!" Coco said, Firestorm shook her head and stood up, than glared down at Gloom, who shuddered from the look. Erika stared from Firestorm to Coco, not sure if it was pride that was holding Firestorm back from her pain or her devotion towards Coco, she smiled.

"Gloom! Do another Absorb!" Erika shouted.

"No you don’t! Firestorm! Scratch her to make her fall back!" Coco shouted, Firestorm launched her right claws into Gloom arm, pushing her off balance and made her fall back.

"Now use Ember!" Firestorm launched the last attack at Gloom; she fainted on the spot.

"Gloom is unable to battle! The victor of this battle is Coco Tradet!" the referee shouted, as Erika recalled Gloom to her poke’ball, Coco ran over to Firestorm. Firestorm was on her knees again, her right arm holding her up.

"Are you all right?" Coco asked, bending down to her level. Erika and Squall ran up to them.

"Her let shoulder is sprained from the battle with Tangela." Erika said, Coco’s head snapped up at her.

"With Tangela?" she asked, Erika nodded, she looked back at Firestorm.

"Take her to my infirmary, she can have her shoulder mended there." Erika said, Coco and Squall picked up Firestorm and followed Erika away from the battlefield. They soon reached a small white tent, they entered it and Erika had them put Firestorm on a white bed like that in a hospital, but it was much lower. She than pulled out some bandages and firmly put Firestorm’s arm in a sling.

"It should heal in a matter of days," Erika said, "Just don’t put her into any battles till it’s completely healed. So now, I guess I’m battling you right?" Erika asked as she spotted Squall, he nodded. "You can stay here if you want, me and Squall will go and battle." Squall looked worriedly at Coco, but she was already focused on Firestorm.

He finally figured before leaving the tent, it would be much better having her stay with Firestorm than watch him battle. Besides, he could tell her how he crushed Erika afterwards.

After the two left, Coco began spraying Potion on some of Firestorm wounds. Firestorm’s eyes were half-lidded, but they were focused on Coco the whole time.

"I’m sorry for not realizing how much pain I put you through. I just didn’t know…" Coco said, her bangs shadowing her eyes, she placed the Potion away. Firestorm eyed her for a moment; her throat was dry so she couldn’t make any sign that she was still conscious towards Coco except her eyes.

"I’m sorry, I guess I still have plenty to learn huh?" she said with a forced smile, she brought her arm up and seemed to be rubbing her eyes, but Firestorm couldn’t tell if she was crying form her perspective.

"I just want to know why you went on without telling me you were hurt?" she asked suddenly in a groggily voice.

"Charmeleon…" Because you are my master, I am suppose you proud, not to show that I am weak. she muttered. She made Coco jump slightly, but she brushed it aside form the shock of her chosen words.

"But you are not weak in any way possible. And for as long as I’ve known you, you never showed a hint of immaturity neither." She added with a chuckle, Firestorm smiled slightly. "But I am proud to have raised such a great pokemon like you," that sent a warm chill over Firestorm’s scaled body.

It seemed to have been hours sitting there with Firestorm. The sounds of passing pidgey over the glass dome and the squeaks of delight from oddish outside the tent was relaxing. It wasn’t until Squall burst into the tent with big grin on his face.

"Me and Torch scorched that victreebel good!" Squall said joyfully, with a barking growlithe next to him, he was holding the badge in his hand. Erika than entered the tent after him, she looked at Coco proudly.

"I hereby present to you the proof of your victory here in the Celdon City Gym." She said as she handed Coco her badge, Peppermint jumped onto the bed to get a closer look at the badge. It was a shape of a flower; each petal had a color of the rainbow on it as well.

"All right! We’ve got the Rainbow Badge!" Coco cried happily.

"Pika pi pikachu!" Peppermint cried in agreement.

"And it’s all thanks to you Firestorm, thanks." Coco said, as she than returned her to her ball to rest. Than she placed her badge inside her badge case. Four more to go, than here I come Indigo Plateau!

"Now remember, the day after tomorrow and I’ll have your cure ready." Erika reminded them.

"Okay," Coco said.
