Chapter One A Murkrow flew over the baron wastelands of Pyrite Town. It was set out for Oreburgh City, to deliver a message for a budding young trainer who was, today, going to have his life changed forever. The bird-type passed over mountains and through valleys, scraping the skies as he went. He saw sandy beaches, smiling faces and Pokémon. He circled Viridian Forest, flew over the oceans and found the place that he was looking for; a small shabby brown house, just bi enough to fit three people in for healthy living conditions. He flew past the mines and landed on the windowsill of the house. Murkrow tapped on the window twice. A small boy of age ten took the window off of its latch and welcomed the messenger. It bore a piece of paper on its leg. The boy untied it and read it: Dear Spook, We understand that you are ready to take the Pokémon Challenge, but first you must catch a Pokémon. Please turn on your computer and access the Items Section. You should have five Poké Balls inside. Please use them wisely. Also, please contact my colleague Professor Rowan, he has a special gift for you. Thank You and Good Luck! Prof. Oak. The boy named Spook put the letter down. He quickly scribbled a note on the back, and tied it to the Murkrow. He then told it to go to Sandgem Town just South of Jubilife and deliver it to Professor Rowan. With that, the Murkrow flew up high and soared in a Southwestern direction. Spook followed the instructions of the note and checked his Items Box. Sure enough, five Poké Balls were being contained inside! He selected withdraw and the Balls were beamed next to his computer in the Data Generator. A lady named Bebe who lived in Hearthome City ran the Pokémon PC Box Service. Spook had met her twice, and she had taught him how to set up his Generator. The truth was that Spook was a techno geek. He loved the fiddly and intricate wires and components on a circuit board. It amazed his family and Bebe how much he knew. But he also knew that his dream was not to work as Bebe’s apprentice, but to be the greatest trainer ever! Murkrow tapped on a window for the second time that day. This time, an old man answered the call. He opened the window and the Murkrow held out his leg. Professor Rowan recognised it as Oak’s Murkrow and took the note from it. Rowan read both sides of the note and went to his computer. Rowan pressed a button on the keyboard and the screen went blue. A sound like a phone began to chime, then a face appeared on the screen. ‘Hello?’ ‘Ah! Good day, Spook! I have just received your note. I shall beam the gift to you know.’ ‘Thank you, Professor!’ Spook was getting excited. He had been studying with Rowan too. He knew almost everything there is to know about Pokémon. Maybe the gift was Spook’s first Pokémon? Or even Pokétch? Whatever it was, Spook was happy. ‘Here we go. It’s coming through now.’ Then there was a buzz, then a bang, and a fizz. ‘Uh-oh,’ said Rowan, ‘That can’t be good.’ ‘Wha…ppened?’ The Professor’s PC had broken again. Rowan shot up and darted to the windowsill where Murkrow was still perched. He grabbed a piece of paper and a pen and scribbled a note upon it. It read: My good friend, Spook I’m afraid that my computer has gone haywire again. I would appreciate it if you would come down to the lab where I can personally give you the gift, and maybe you could use some of that techno ingenuity on my PC! Joking aside, the gift is a special one and I can’t afford to have fall into the wrong hands, so when you receive it, please look after it properly. I know that you will anyway! See you very soon, Prof. Rowan He then tied it to the Murkrow’s leg and instructed it to return to Spook’s house.
