Chapter1: A new beginning

"No! God no!" A young boy screamed out as he saw his faithful friend hit the ground. "Char" the small lizard choked out as it gasped for air.

The boy looked at his friend and then over at his attacker. It was a tall man dressed in all black with a red R on his shirt. His brother had warned him about these people, but he never thought he would ever run into one of them. The man watched with an evil smirk as the boy ran over to the charmander.

"Come with me," the man growled at the kid. He raised the gun back at the boy. "Why me," asked the boy his body shaking violently. "You have a power we want," the man again cocked his pistol at the boy.

Then the charmander began to stir again. It stood up blood poring from its chest, it knew it was going to die, but it couldn't let the world loose such a gift. It lunged at the man. Startled the man shot the gun missing the lizard by a few inches. The char leaped to the man's chest and using its sharp teeth raped its jaws around his neck. The man gave a deathly scream and fell backward blood pouring from the wound. He flailed trying to get the pokemon off, but it was to no avail, the char had locked its jaws.

The man managed to lift the gun and point it strait in the charander's gut. The char felt it and braced for what it knew was next. Its short life flashed before its eyes. Two shots rang out and the boy watched in horror as the bullets went through his best friend. Every thing from then on seemed to go in slow motion. The char made a muffled scream and then fell silent. The man collapsed and gave his final staggered breaths. He died with the charmander still on his neck.

The boy ran up to his friend and saw that it was amazingly still alive. He picked up his best friend, its blood spilling all over his pokemon league shirt and his black jean pants. He cupped the char in his small arms, too small to handle death. The char looked up at him and smiled, such purity in one so small, such a huge responsibility given to one so young. It wished he didn't have to see it die, but this would be a lesson he would never forget.

"No, please don't leave me," the boy cried. The char only smiled at him and gave a few coughs. "What am I going to do without you?" The pokemon breathed heavily and answered. "Char charman mander cha mader,"(You'll never be without me.)

It winced and looked up at the sky, It was beautiful. Blue with small puffy clouds, the pidgys sang and it could even hear the earth spring forth with all kinds of new life, it was definitely a beautiful day to die on. It was sad that it never got to grow up, never got to actually fight in a pokemon tournament, never got to find love and mate. But it had done its job the boy was safe and life would go on without it.

"Char ca mander der," (Have a good life friend). With that the char took its final breath, laid still in the boy's arms, and became cold. "No, please," the boy cried, but it was to no avail his friend was already gone. The boy looked up at the sky eyes filled with rage and tears. "Come back! Don't leave me!"

A year later...

"It's hatching!"

The boy now a year older ran down the stairs at a blistering pace. He was wearing a red shirt and shorts. To him the stairs seemed to go on forever but he managed to finally get to the bottom. He ran pasted the kitchen and into the living room where every one was. He pressed between is older brother and his much older sister, their caretaker sense their parents had died. He looked in amazement as the large oval egg stirred in the makeshift nest composed of towels and heat blankets. He looked up at the charizard couple and sitting next to the egg. They smiled back at him and then went back tending to the egg.

"I can’t believe after all this time," the older brother said with a smile. Then every one's heart jumped as a small crack appeared on the egg, and then another. The boy's smile was ear to ear, he loved watching the beginning of life. The female char reached down to the egg, but the male grabbed her orange claw with his and shook his head no. She understood and watched uneasily, she wanted to see her baby. Suddenly a small snout poked out of one of the cracks, it took in air for the first time and poked at the shell some more.

The boy quietly cheered the baby on as it broke through and split the egg. The boy's sister was in tears she took out a handkerchief and blew her nose. The male char looked at her and shook his head; humans could be too emotional sometimes. The female scooped the almost lifeless body up and started licking it clean. The male's red mouth filled with flames of every color. The boy watched as the father shot an ember at his baby's tail. On impact the small char screamed and cried for the first time. Its tail flickered and then burst with a small flame. The three humans clapped and cheered, but a growl from the mother told them to keep it down. "Okay, sorry girl," the sister said. "So?" the older boy asked. The male looked at the female; she smiled and motioned for the boy with a claw. "Go on Richard." His sister said as she pushed him towards the charizards.

The boy slowly walked up to them and the mother handed him the baby. He carefully took the pale orange form in his arms. He just stood there for a minute. "Well?" his sister asked. "It's a male," the boy said. The boy started to tear up thinking of his lost friend. He had really never gotten over it, he guessed he never would. The male put a claw on the boy's small shoulder. "Char charizar char izard char." (When he comes of age he is yours) The boy smiled and wiped his tears with his sleeve. He looked up at the charizards with his big red char eyes. "Thank you."
