Pidgeys and pidgeottos flocked back to their nests while rattatas scurried into their burrows beneath the earth. The serenity of the evening was enough to lure the young, curious eevee out of a hollowed log to gaze at the sunset admiringly. This was his favorite time of day. He loved watching the moon in complete silence, when all of the wild pokémon typically went to sleep. Tonight had produced a full moon; he had watched the moon so often that its cycle had become engraved in his mind. It was his dream to become an umbreon, to have that ebon coat bearing the golden rings, and watching the moon seemed to fulfill that dream in some small way. Ears instinctively twitched in all directions as wild pokémon made final preparations for the night while the eevee trotted down the beaten dirt path that led directly to Viridian City. He knew it was a huge risk during the day as trainers typically followed this path while plodding through the forest on their way to Pewter City. At night, however, it was a different story. Most trainers usually settled down at a campsite or stayed in the city itself, which allowed free roaming for the wildlife of the forest. The evolution pokémon sat on his haunches at the edge of the treeline, lost in a gaze toward the darkened sky. Stars twinkled and that bright moon blossomed with a pale glow that dwarfed the lamp posts within the city limits. He managed as much of a smile as he could, and began yipping at the moon without inhibition or regard for impending dangers out of sight. Nearby, the crackling of flames roused a young trainer from his sleep. He rubbed his eyes and peered over the top of his sleeping bag, noticing a charmander and vulpix tending to the warm fire. Smiling, he beckoned both to each side of his body and wrapped his arms around them, which allowed the sleeping bag to absorb the heat from the charmander’s tail flame. The two small pokémon settled down when nearby barks echoed into the ears of all three. Curious, the trainer emerged from the sleeping bag to investigate the noise. The charmander and vulpix followed behind their master, having adopted that same inquisitive trait. As he peered over a line of bushes, the young man spotted the lone eevee barking at the moonlight. His first thought was of a vibrant flareon, its fur coat blazing with life and its fiery breath streaking across that same moonlit sky. That eevee was as good as his. While lost in the moonlight, the eevee barely felt an uneasy presence and whipped his head around just as a stream of flames brushed past his furry hide. A charmander, he noticed, had broken into a running tackle while a vulpix stayed back and used a flamethrower attack, and it was then that the eevee saw the trainer behind them: a young man, no more than 16 years old, with jet black hair and a completely black outfit that nearly rendered him invisible in the darkness of the woods. Despite that, his eyes glowed with a vibrant blue at the liveliness of the battle, and the illumination of his determined expression in the fire fox’s attack only reflected that even more. The eevee managed to pull himself out of his study of the trainer, darting to the side just as the charmander charged past him, that whipping flame nearly having caught on his bushy tail. He heard another set of commands, and realized the flaw of allowing the charmander behind him. Flames shot at him from both sides, the battle cries of both the charmander and vulpix having echoed in the starry night as a circle of fire surrounded the eevee: a two- pronged fire spin attack. He darted in all directions, absently hoping there might have been some miraculous gap in the flame through which he could have escaped. He ran back to the middle to keep far away from the fire, and released a high-pitched whine in fear. It had been his first pokémon battle in his life, and already he was all but captured by some trainer who would undoubtedly ruin his dream. His last thoughts were of the moon as the red and white sphere swirled through the air, bouncing off his back and forcing him inside. Paralyzed with complete fear from the fire, the eevee submitted almost immediately, and from inside the pokéball, he heard the cheers of his new master. *** Short, I know.
