Chapter Two: The First Pokemon Chris woke up, suddenly. He had ben having a good dream, about the thrills of using pokemon in battle. On instinct, he rolled over, pulling open his curtains and looking at the clock. It was Half past 9. he would be getting his first pokemon in just 30 minutes. But then he noticed that this wasn't as good as he thought. ne was in his pajamas, he hadn't had breakfast, and he had half an hour to do it in. He jumped out of bed, almost knocking his clock off his bedside cabinet, and gut dressed again. It was when he was halfway down the stairs that he noticed he had his shirt on backwards. he switched it round, knowing where to step almost off by heart now, and walked into the kitchen, where his mother was making toast. 'Happy birthday, dear,' She said. 'Do you want some toast? Today's your big day.' 'Yeah, thanks Mum.' Chris replied, in a mouthful of toast already. After he had finished his toast, he went to watch someTV, as he had 10 minutes left. The TV went on straight to Channel 24 news. "Hello, I'm Julia Cross, Here at Birch Research Lab, in New Bark Town. Last night, This was the scene of an attempted Pokemon Robbery." Chris remembered Team Rocket. "We are here with Officer Jenny of Petalburg City." Officer Jenny came onto the screen. "Well, I'm glad to report that three anonymous persons were able to stop the theives before they could escape with the pokemon. Please will all of you be on the lookout for these people." The images of Team Rocket's faces were shown on the screen. Underneath each picture was a name. the woman with the Long, red hair was apparently called Jessie, while her comrade, with the drawling voice, was apparently called James. Cassidy was a woman with short blonde hair, and her comrade, Butch, also had short hair, but quite short. "If you see any of these people, please contact Hoenn Police Headquarters." Chris's mum turned off the TV, and said to him, 'Well, darling, time to go. Have a good time, and i'll have some lunch ready for you when you come back!' She kissed him on the cheek, and waved him goodbye, as he went towards the lab. As Chris reached the lab, he found the area full of news crews, all reporting on the Attempted burglary by Team Rocket. he went inside, and found May, Professor Birch and about 20 other childern, waiting for their first pokemon. As he came close, May saw him and waved, and Birch smiled and gestured to wait there a moment. Chris went over to help May replacing the pokeballs in their right places, while listening to the kids behind him call in glee as their first pokemon was given to them, and they battled eachother. By the time Chris and May had finished, however, the children had already gone, avoiding the news cameras. 'Hello, Chris.' Birch said. 'Sleep well last night?' 'Yeah, thanks.' Chris replied. 'So, what did you need me for?' 'Well, I have good news and bad news.' 'Hmm... I'll take the bad news.' Chris said, expecting the worst. 'Well, unfortunately, I have no more Starter Pokemon to give out.' 'Buggar. And the good news?' 'The good news is, I believe I have something you might like.' Birch reached into his pocket, and pulled out what, unmistakably, were the pokeballs of Eevee and Pichu. 'They aren't officially Starter Pokemon, but after seeing you controlling them in the Lab... It would be the least I could do to give you these. They seem to like you, too.' 'Wow. Thanks, Professor!' Chris said, overjoyed. He let out Pichu and Eevee again. 'hey guys, how would you like me as your new trainer?' 'Eevee!' Eevee barked, jumping onto Chris's arm, laying in his jacket Pocket. 'Pi!' Pichu called, before jumping to an almost parrot-like position in his left shoulder. 'Hmm, well I would take that as a yes.' Birch said, cheerily. 'Good luck on your journey, Chris. Don't be a stranger.' 'Don't worry, Professor, I'll visit you soon. May, I'll meet you at the beginning of Route 100. I need to pack my things.' 'Goodbye, Chris.' 'Bye, Professor!' Chris left the Lab, feeling very pleased. He could now see why he wanted to do that after the other kids had gone. he dodged the Interviewers, and made his way back home. When he got back home, he saw a big lunch laid on the table, presents lining the floor. And, best of all, a man, sitting at the table, serving out Potatoes. 'Dad!' Chris yelled, hugging his father. 'You'll never guess what!' 'Good morning to you too, son. And, I don't know. Tell me.' 'Professor Birch gave me 2 pokemon!' 'Did he now? let's have a look.' Chris released Eevee and Pichu. 'Hmm, impressive.' 'Thanks, dad.' After the very large lunch, Chris started opening his presents. He had recieved a book called The Trainer's guide to Pokemon from May, a Rubber Farfetch'd from Spedz, and some books and pokemon dolls from his schoolfreinds. He had been given a Bag for his journey, from his cousin, Kati. His other cousin, Lonny, had given him about 18 pokeballs, to use on his journey. Then, he found another present. His parents had both chipped in for it. He opened it carefully, and found one thing. the one thing he had wanted the most. 'No way... Thank you Dad, Thank you Mum, Thankyouthankyouthankyou!' He had been given a Brand new Pokegear, with Built in Phone, Map, and Radio Functions. He put it on around his wrist, and went upstairs to pack the rest of his things. As he went upstairs, Chris found that his new Bag had 5 different pockets. The largest one, at the back, could amazingly carry a folding bicycle, and more. There was a smaller pocket, where he put the Potions he had been given from his freind Soph. There was another pocket, which looked big enough for Pokeballs, so he used it for them. He then had 2 Pockets to fill. the larger, he used for his spare clothes and sleeping bag, and the smaller, he left empty. No doubt he would find a use for it somewhere. Chris put on his Bag, took his favourite cap, and went back downstairs. Chris came back into the kitchen to find Professor Birck had just come in. 'Ah, hello Chris. I thought I'd just drop by to say goodbye again, and to give you your Birthday present.' Birch said, cheerily. 'Professor, you really don't need to, you have me Pichu and Eev-' Chris said, before Birch interrupted. 'No, Chris. I would have given you those if you had got your first pokemon in the middle of March. Now, here you are. Happy birthday.' Birch took out of his bag a Pokedex. '...T-t-thank y-you, Professor.' Chris said, almost unable to talk. 'It's alright, Chris. I gave one to May, then found I had one spare.' Chris put the pokedex on a slot in his belt, as did his Pokeballs containing Pichu and Eevee. He put on his bag, and went to the door. As Brich and his parents waved goodbly, Chris felt tears forming in his eyes. he forced them back, and headed off to the north, where he could see May waiting for him.
