Chapter 1: Only One [Broken this fragile thing now And I can't I can't pick up the pieces. And I've thrown my words all around, but I can't I can't give you a reason] "You did good," he said, hating to look into that face of sadness and defeat. May smiled slightly, as if trying to convince him that it was all right that he won and she lost. She never was good at convincing anyone. "Drew, it's okay. You don't have to feel guilty. You won fair and square. I'll compete again and hopefully, I'll win then," she said in a faux cheerful voice. Drew sighed. "Of course, you'll win, May! You should've won. You're a way better trainer than me," he said. "Some people train Pokemon for battle, others train for contests. You're one of the ones that train for contests, and in that area, you deserve to have that Master Ranking." She didn't sound convinced herself. She was disappointed. And he felt that he had let her down. [I feel so broken up and I give up. I just want to tell you so you know...] He handed her what he usually did: a single red rose. She seemed so happy by the simple gesture and continuously thanked him. But he pretty much did nothing, except take away the title she had wanted so badly. "Hey, May," someone called farther away from them. Even though he had only seen the guy a few times, he had recognized his voice instantly. It was one of those voices you heard once and memorized, because you knew it would be extremely important to you someday. Brendan grew closer to the duo, his 'better-than-you' attitude filled his every step, his every breath. Drew had learned to hate that attitude quickly. "Oh... It's.. Lou?" Drew rolled his eyes and sighed angrily. "Drew. My name is Drew." And with that, Brendan took his place next to make, making a complete barrier between Drew and May. [Here I go Scream my lungs out and try to get to you. you are my only one. I let go, but there's just no one That gets me like you do. you are my only, my only one] May was uncomfortable with the situation. Drew could tell, because it was lighting up her face. "Um... I need to go heal my Pokemon..." she said awkwardly, making up an excuse to get out of that place. And with that, she walked out and unlike the leader he was, Brendan followed her. Drew walked down the crowded streets of Lilycove, his head filled with thoughts of May. It would be a miracle if she felt the same way as he did. Everything was possible. Nothing was possible. [Made my mistakes, let you down. And I can't, I can't hold on for too long.] How could he have beat her? He should've lost on purpose, simply because it would've made her happy. And there was nothing better than seeing her happy. He had upset her and she clearly had the word disappointment written all over her face. But yet she had faked happiness for him. Why? [Ran my whole life in the ground And I can't, I can't get up when you're gone.] He was preoccupied with his thoughts and he paid no attention to his surroundings. That was his mistake. He didn't see the car coming at all, until it hit him and then it all went absolutely blank. [And something's breaking up I feel like giving up. I won't walk out until you know...] Brendan had been trying to cheer her up, but nothing he did worked. She had let herself down and lost her big break. She was absolutely hopeless. Hopeless was all she would ever be. As a last resort, Brendan suggested that they go hang out on the coast of the city. May had agreed. She should've seen it coming. As they passed by the hospital, someone ran by with a person on a stretcher. "Oh my lord..." May muttered and took off inside the building. Brendan stood on the sidewalk, obviously confused but then ran after her. Nothing changed. Everything changed. [Here I go Scream my lungs out and try to get to you. You are my only one. I let go, but there's just no one that gets me like you do. You are my only, my only one.] An exasperated May sprinted to the counter and asked for his room. It was there that she saw him, lying unconscious. It was too much to bear. She couldn't be there anymore. [Here I go, so dishonestly leave a note for you, my only one. And I know, you can see right through me. So let me go, and you will find someone.] Brendan asked her what was going on. "Come on. Let's walk by the shore," she had told him. In that hospital, there was so much pain and she couldn't stand being there at all. So, as they walked, she told him everything, except one part. [Here I go Scream my lungs out and try to get to you. you are my only one. I let go. But there's just, no one no one like you. You are my only, my only one.] When Drew woke up, he saw the note and even after being in a hit-and-run accident, he felt a surging happiness because the note contained everything he ever wanted to hear. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
