CHAPTER 18
CHECKMATE

"Back again, I see," Drew said, smiling.  "I heard you gave up your Electabuzz to the Power Plant.  Like a good Samaritan, I suppose."
"Hey, Drew," Kamon retaliated, "I know you think I'm a fool for getting rid of one of the only Pokémon I have that could take half of your team down.  But rest assured, I have in my possession a Pokémon that can, and will, wipe out your whole team."
"No, I really don't think you're a fool.  In fact, I ditched one of my strongest Pokémon to improve my team.  You see, I started out with a Cyndaquil, much like you did.  Later on, I traded my Gyarados for a Totodile.  I raised him, and found out that he, now a Feraligatr, mind you, was much more powerful than I had thought he would be.  I kept him on my team.
"I eventually heard of Lugia being spotted not far from Olivine; somewhere around the Whirl Islands.  I assumed that he was there much before I had heard of this, but I had never found him.
"I traveled there, and I used my most prized Pokémon, Ho-oh.  It was a spectacular match, Kamon.  You should have seen it; Lugia vs. Ho-oh; titan vs. titan.
"Anyway, after I had caught Lugia, using my Master Ball, I realized that in order to make room for it on my party, I would have to abandon one of my Pokémon.  This of course broke my heart, but I decided that it would be foolish to have 2 Fire Pokémon on the same team, and, seeing how Ho-oh is a million times stronger than Typhlosion will ever be, I said 'goodbye' to him, and put Lugia on my team-forever.
"Anyway, what was that 'super Pokémon' that can wipe out my whole team?"
"You'll have to find out.  For my first Pokémon, I'm choosing Umbreon!"
"Too easy. Tyranitar, go!  Your Rock Slide attack, now!"
"Umbreon, Mud-Slap!" Kamon commanded.  Tyranitar hurled rocks at Umbreon, doing minor damage.  Umbreon came right back with the even weaker attack, Mud-Slap, temporarily blinding Tyranitar.
"Tyranitar, Flamethrower, now!" Drew yelled.  It was obvious that what Kamon said had an effect on the way Drew was battling; he was trying to use his full power now instead of just 75%-85% of it.  Flames spewed from Tyranitar's mouth, and engulfed the black Pokémon.
"Umbreon, Toxic!"  Umbreon spat a green substance at Tyranitar, poisoning it.  Umbreon then attempted a Zap Cannon, but it missed, allowing Tyranitar to finish off Umbreon with a Hyper Beam.  "No…my Umbreon…well, we did our best, and I'm only down one Pokémon.  All right, Typhlosion, you can battle!  Now, go!"
"Sending a Typhlosion to battle against my Tyranitar?" Drew asked.  "I cannot imagine what exactly you are thinking right now, but my guess is that you have lost your mind.  Or it ran away…"
"Ha ha, very funny," Kamon retorted.  "But I will win this time, Drew.  And I know very well what I am doing.  I'm taking a risk, but here goes nothing.  Typhlosion, Dynamic Punch attack, now!"
"Tyranitar, try to Surf it!  Quickly!"  Tyranitar wasn't fast enough, and so Typhlosion charged at the monstrous Rock Pokémon at punched it with all of its might.  As a result, Tyranitar flew across the stony island, rolled, and then came to a stop on the edge, knocked out.  "Argh," Drew exclaimed, "return.  Well, I see now why you wanted to use that Pokémon.  Well, I also have a little, er, surprise.  Heracross, go!  Use Earthquake!"  The blue beetle came out and immediately stomped on the ground, making it tremble and crack.
"Typhlosion, Flamethrower attack!" Kamon commanded.  Flames gushed out of Typhlosion's maw and engulfed Heracross.
"Heracross, you know what to do.  A Seismic Toss, now!"  Heracross lifted Typhlosion into the air and then hurled him across the cave, making him hit the far wall and almost tumbling into the water below.
Typhlosion was barley grasping onto the edge of the stone platform that Drew and Kamon were using as their stadium.  Typhlosion lifted himself up and crawled back onto land, and prepared to attack.
"Typhlosion, make this a one hit K.O.; Fire Blast!"  A fire bastion slammed into Heracross, knocking her off of her feet and almost knocking her out; she hung in with the Focus Band.  "What!?  No way…" Kamon said in awe.
"Yes way, Kamon," Drew remarked.  "Heracross, Reversal!"  Heracross rammed into Typhlosion with all of her might, doing double the damage that Typhlosion did to her.  Typhlosion easily fainted, making Kamon switch his Pokémon.
"Come back, Typhlosion.  You did your best.  Okay, Corsola, go!  Use your Psychic attack!"  The pink coral Pokémon performed the telekinetic attack, knocking out Heracross.
"Fine.  I'll fight Water with Water.  Heracross, come back.  Feraligatr, go!  Razor Wind attack" Drew ordered.  His colossal blue Pokémon summoned a gust of wind, and made it slice through Corsola.
"Corsola, Double-Edge attack!" Kamon said.  Corsola spun around and then rammed into Feraligatr, making him fall over the cliff.  "Corsola, follow him in there."
"Feraligatr, create a tidal wave and wash Corsola away!" Drew yelled.  The aqua alligator used all of the force he could to create an immense wall of water; Corsola couldn't help but be washed back around the circular island.
"All right, Corsola, use and Ice Beam on the water as you are coming down on top of Feraligatr!" Kamon said.  Corsola did as she was told, and almost encased Feraligatr in ice.
"Feraligatr, Crunch attack, now!"
"Mirror Coat!  Quickly, Corsola!"  The Dark attack was merely deflected, almost knocking out Feraligatr.
"I'll teach you to mess with the best Pokémon trainer in the world, Kamon."
"Second best," Kamon replied.
"What!?  Not yet you're not!  Feraligatr, Earthquake attack!"  Feraligatr shook the cave, making some stalactites fall from the ceiling and into the water.  The frozen wave crumbled, and water rushed around both Pokémon.  Corsola, being weak to Ground attacks, was knocked out.  Unfortunately for Drew, however, a stalactite fell on top of Feraligatr, also knocking him out.  "What a stupid way to lose a Pokémon…" Drew said, recalling his Feraligatr.
"Hey, a loss is a loss," Kamon said.  "Now, come back Corsola, and go, Entei!"  From the purple and pink Pokéball emerged the Fire-type Pokémon, with its head raised and chest out.  Sparkles shone all about it, and flames came out of its mouth with every breath.  The white smoke on its back rose into the air, and its eyes glared at Drew.  Entei stomped on the ground, impatient, waiting for its opponent.
"Amazing…not just the fact that you actually caught Entei, but that its shiny…er, well, so what.  Shiny Pokémon or legendary Pokémon, it won't matter to me.  I can still win.  I will win.  Ampharos, go!  Your Rain Dance!"
"Nice try.  Entei, Sunny Day, and then a Fire Blast!"  At first Entei refused to attack.  He used Sunny Day, but then try to use its physical strength to show Ampharos who's boss.  "Entei, no!  I told what to use, now use it!  Now!!"  Entei leered at Kamon, and spit a small ember at him.  Entei then charged at Ampharos and, from about a yard away, performed the Fire-type attack, burning Ampharos.
"Heh, you think your legendary Pokémon can beat my Ampharos!  You fool.  It doesn't matter how powerful or what level a Pokémon is if it isn't trained.  Your Entei doesn't listen to you, Kamon.  Its disobedience will be its downfall.  Ampharos, Rain Dance!"
This battle was oddly familiar to Kamon, but he couldn't quite put his finger on how.  Previous battles were racing through his head.  It has to be when I was using Typhlosion…he thought.  Or…wait a second…no, I remember!  The battle between he and Lance, the first time around, where his Electabuzz used Rain Dance against Lance's Charizard.
"Good strategy, hindering my Charizard's abilities and making Thunder 100% accurate.  Good job, but not good enough!" Kamon remembered Lance saying.  However, Lance's next attack was Earthquake, and Kamon's Entei did not know that move.  Kamon had to come up with his own strategy.
"Um…Entei, Sunny Day attack!" Kamon said.
"Well, that was kinda stupid," Drew remarked.  "Rain Dance again, Ampharos."  A battle of the weather started then.  It went back and forth for five minutes straight.  Finally Drew had had enough.  "All right, Ampharos.  I have had enough."  There was a small pause.  "Thunderbolt attack, now!"  The red jewel in the middle of Ampharos's forehead glowed yellow, and streaks of lightning came out of it, striking Entei, but causing hardly any damage at all.  "What!?  No way!  Ampharos, another Thunderbolt!"  This time Entei dodged the shock, and then charged at Ampharos, head down.
"Entei, are you using a Skull Bash or a Headbutt?" Kamon inquired.  Entei then rammed into Ampharos's belly at full-speed, knocking him off of his feet.  Kamon pulled out Max the Pokédex and told it to identify Entei's attack.
"Skull Bash," Max said.
"Okay.  Entei, finish Ampharos off!  Take Down attack, now!"  Entei leered at Kamon, but then did something not Kamon or Drew expected.  It nodded its head, and then charged at Ampharos again.  Entei leapt up into the air, and then came back down, damaging himself and Ampharos; damaging Ampharos a lot more, of course.
Drew grew angry and impatient.  "I've had it with you and your second-rate Pokémon, Kamon," he said.  "It's going to take a legendary Pokémon to bring down yours, Kamon.  I severely underestimated you, Kamon."  Kamon tried to ignore the fact that Drew was saying his name after every sentence.  "Kamon, you will now witness the most second most powerful Pokémon on this planet.  I present to you; Lugia!"  Drew unveiled his prize Pokémon.  From a bright light emerged the gargantuan.  From its sliver wings to its blue spikes on its back, Lugia was a symbol of power.  "Lugia, Hydro Pump!"  Lugia blasted water at Entei, almost knocking him out.  Entei hung in there, though, and prepared to counter-attack Lugia.
"Entei," Kamon started, "Hyper Beam attack!"  Entei crouched close to the ground and then unleashed the gold energy at Lugia.
"Lugia!" Drew shouted.  "No!  Reflect!  Barrier!  Do something!"  Lugia attempted to deflect the attack, but it was fruitless; the beam struck Lugia, and did an enormous amount of damage.  "Lugia, Steel Wing attack!"  Entei ducked and then rolled out of Lugia's range and then spit a ring of fire around it.
"Entei, I didn't tell you to do that…" Kamon muttered.
"I'm getting the impression that Entei doesn't give a flying flip about what you tell him to do, Kamon," Drew remarked.
"Hey, how about you just shut the hell up and let me take care of my own Pokémon, okay?" Kamon snapped.  There was a small silence that followed.
"Yeah, sure, whatever."
Kamon grunted.  "Entei, finish Lugia off!  Fire Blast!"  Entei actually obeyed Kamon this time and launched a blast of flames and Lugia.
"You fool.  My Lugia will not be taken down so easily."  The flames engulfed the Psychic Pokémon and did an incredible amount of damage.  It was still a long way to go before Lugia was going to be taken down, however.  "All right, Lugia.  Aeroblast attack!"  Lugia gathered white energy in between its wings and then shot it in a beam at Entei.  The blast was a critical hit, and almost put an end to Entei's fight.
"Entei, no!" Kamon shouted.  "Entei, get back up, please."  Entei struggled for a moment, but then slowly started to rise.  Entei then rose up, on all four legs, and met Lugia eye-to-eye.  "Never back down, Entei," Kamon muttered under his breath.  "Never."  Entei then shot a fireball at Lugia, doing minor damage.
"Ha, is that all you have left?  Lugia, Waterfall!"  Lugia did a cannonball into the water, allowing it to fall down on top of Entei.  Entei's eyes all of a sudden glowed white for a second, and then he shot an even bigger fireball at Lugia, this time doing a significant amount of damage.  "Gah, no!  It's using Rage!" Drew exclaimed.
"Er…yes, of course it is Drew," Kamon said, pretending that he knew what Entei was using.
"Well, then, Lugia; use your Recover!"  Almost all of the damage that Entei had done to Lugia had just been erased in one single attack.  "All right, then!  Use Hyper Beam and finish Entei off!"  The instant that the beam had struck Entei, he tried to reverse the attack with Rage, but it failed, and Entei fell to the ground, knocked out.
"No, Entei…no…" Kamon uttered, disappointed.  "Return.  Delibird, attack with Blizzard!"  Kamon threw out the special Great Ball, allowing Delibird to enter the arena.  Delibird then launched a storm of snow and hail at Lugia, freezing it.
"What!" Drew exclaimed.  "You just lucked out, big-time.  Come back, Lugia.  I guess I'm down to my last Pokémon, aren't I?  Well, no matter.  I will win.  I have never lost, and I am not going to lose to the likes of you!  Ho-oh, go!"  Drew threw an Ultra Ball, and from it came the stunning Fire-and-Flying-type Pokémon.  "And it would appear as if I have the advantage, now wouldn't it?"
"Heh, you wish.  Delibird, Ice Beam!" Kamon commanded.  The beam struck and froze Ho-oh.  The match was over.  Kamon had finally won.  "Yes!  Yes!!  I won!!!  Ha, showed you, didn't I?"
"I'll show you, Kamon.  Ho-oh, Sacred Fire, and then Recover!" Drew said.  Kamon's celebration ended quickly, because just then the ice shattered, and flames blew out in every direction.  Ho-oh then recovered all of its lost health.  The match was far from over.
"No…" Kamon muttered.  His worst fear just came true.  "It can't be…Delibird, Fly!"
"Ho-oh, Sky Attack!" Drew yelled.  Ho-oh charged up the attack, and then dodged Delibird's attack.  Ho-oh then flew to the top of the cave, and then, with a burst of flames, dive-bombed Delibird.
"Come on, Delibird, hit him!  Try a…um, a Drill Peck!"  Delibird struck Ho-oh with his beak, doing a fair amount of damage; Ho-oh was still far from being knocked out, though.
"Kamon, you and I should not even be in the same league.  I am so much better than you are.  Ho-oh, enough games," Drew said.  Games!? Kamon thought.  That didn't sound good.  "Finish Delibird with a Flamethrower."  No way is a small attack like that going to knock out my Delibird, Kamon thought.  He thought wrong.
"Aaah!  My Delibird!  Well, return.  So, it's a one-on-one, now isn't it?" Kamon said.
"It would appear to be that way, yes," Drew responded.
"Heh, then I win.  Golem, come out!"  Kamon sent out his final Pokémon, the Rock-type Golem.  Aw, crap, Drew thought.  His Rock attacks are going to do four times the normal amount of damage.  Plus it's a same-type attack, so another 1.5 times increase…even an attack that that would normally would do 50 damage would do 275!  And Rock Slide does something like 80…so that would be somewhere around 440 damage!  This is going to suck, real bad…
"Ho-oh, Solarbeam, now!"  Ho-oh gathered energy for the Grass-type attack.  Let's see you take quadruple damage, Golem.  This attack alone should do about 480 damage, Drew thought.
"Never!  Golem, Rock Slide attack!"  It came down to this.  If Ho-oh lived, Drew would most likely win.  If Ho-oh faints, however…
Golem spun around, making boulder fly in the direction of Ho-oh.  Right before it hit him, though, Ho-oh unleashed Solarbeam, a little early (so it wasn't fully charged), disintegrating all of the rocks and striking Golem.  Golem endured the damage, and then tried another Rock Slide.
"No, it didn't work!" Drew exclaimed.  "It was about 85% power, and it wasn't enough…fine then, Ho-oh.  You'll just have to use Giga Drain!"
Kamon did not think that the battle was quite over; not yet, anyway.  He still believed that whoever attacked first would win, so Ho-oh and Golem were equally matched.
"Ya know what, Drew," Kamon started, "our Pokémon are evenly matched right now."
"What?" Drew asked.
"Oh, yes.  You see, if Golem attacks with Rock Slide, I win; there is no way that your Ho-oh will have that much HP to survive.  By the same token, if Ho-oh attacks with Giga Drain, Golem would most likely get knocked out."
"That's nice.  Ho-oh, finish it!"
"Golem, finish it!"  Ho-oh began sucking the life out of Golem, but before he was K.O.-ed, he performed the Rock Slide maneuver.  Ho-oh was trying to gain the life that Golem was taking away, but the attack was too much for him, and Ho-oh fainted.  At the same time, or just thereafter, Golem collapsed.  "Uh, my Golem!"
"No!  Ho-oh!" Drew shouted.  "Well, I'd say this is a draw."
"No way, Drew.  I won, fair and square.  Your Pokémon was knocked out first," Kamon responded.
"Hmph.  No way.  It's impossible.  I have never lost before, never.  If only Lugia hadn't been frozen…"
"Admit defeat, Drew.  It was a hard thing for to do;  You were the only one I ever gave my badge to."
Drew recalled that day, almost a year ago, when he defeated Kamon for the first time.  I suppose that was a  glimpse of the future, Drew thought.  Drew smiled.
"I almost feel…relieved, Kamon," he said weakly.
"Er, why?"
"It feels like a weight has been lifted.  I almost never wanted to battle again, just so I could say I was undefeated.  But, I also knew that battling is what I live for, Kamon."
"Ah."
"Yes."
"Well, I suppose this makes me the-"
"Champion," Drew interrupted.
Kamon smiled.  "Finally."

* * *

Kamon came home the next day, and they had yet another celebration, again in his honor.  After over three-and-a-half years of work, Kamon had achieved his lifelong dream.

EPILOGUE

Kamon stayed at his mother's house for another 2 months, which in the mean time Lance, Jasmine, and even Drew showed up.  On the 3rd to last day of staying in New Bark Town, Drew came by and told him thanks.  Kamon asked him what for, and Drew responded that now he knows that there are stronger trainers out there, and that he will train twice as hard to beat Kamon the next time they meet.
Kamon went back to his gym, and continued battling.  This time, however, he went a little easier on the trainers.  He also only used 3 of his Pokémon, chosen randomly, against five of his opponents.
One night, he walked out on the Cianwood beach and looked up.  He saw a full moon.  He smiled, and walked inside, knowing that now, his quest is finally finished.
