CHAPTER 27
THE LEGENDS AWAKE

The three of us were flying on our Pokémon, Kamon on his Delibird and Carly and I on my Lugia.  While we were flying, however, we noticed something highly peculiar going on.  Three Pokémon were battling against one trainer with five.  The trainer had short, red hair and was in a long sleeved grey shirt, with worn blue jeans and black and white tennis shoes.
Kamon pulled out his new Pokédex Bob to see what the Pokémon were.  Sneasel, Feraligatr, Ninetales, Crobat, Alakazam, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, Bob the Pokédex stated.
'Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres?' Kamon asked.
'Of course,' Carly said, looking somewhat surprised that Kamon did not know them, 'you honestly don't know the three legendary bird Pokémon are?'
Kamon responded, 'No, I haven't a clue.'
'Well, for someone that graduated a year early in Earl's Pokémon Academy, I would think you, of all people, should know,' I said sarcastically.
'Earl did not teach us about the three dogs or birds,' Kamon snapped back at me.
'Actually,' Carly interrupted, 'there are five birds.  Two of which Drew here owns.'  Carly glanced over at me, as if expecting me to agree.
'You mean…'  Kamon's voice faded away.  'You mean Ho-oh and Lugia are two of the legendary bird Pokémon?'
'Yeah, and, in my opinion, the best of them.  Well, besides Zapdos.  Zapdos is undoubtedly the third best bird, and one of the best Electric-type Pokémon,' I replied.  Kamon flew off toward the battle site, and then saw someone he would have never thought that he would have ever seen again.  This trainer wasn't supposed to be seen for another twelve years.  Three years ago he was arrested, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison (as I later found out).
'No…it can't be…' Kamon wondered.
'What?' Carly asked, 'what can't be?'
'It's Jet.  He was supposed to be sentenced to 15 years in prison, but apparently he escaped.'
'Who's Jet?'
'My rival, as of five years ago, when I was first fighting all of the Johto Gym Leaders.  Then, after I became a gym leader, he happened to stow away on the S.S. Aqua, and because of a terrible thunderstorm, we turned around and headed back to Olivine.  Of course, they also knew that there was a stow-away on board, and arrested Jet for stowing away on a ship, theft, and about three more charges.'
'Oh.  Well, I wonder how he escaped.'
'I'm not sure, but I'm about to find out,' Kamon said.
He signaled for the three Pokémon to take them downward, so he could confront Jet and find out what exactly is going on.  When they landed, Kamon hopped off of his Pokémon and recalled it, and Carly and I off my Lugia.  I did not call back his Lugia however, and instead sent out my Ho-oh to join him.  I figured that, just in case, since Ho-oh and Lugia are also legendary bird Pokémon, they could be of some use.
'Jet!' Kamon called out, 'Jet!  What the heck are you doing here?'  Jet almost did not recognize Kamon since he got his haircut a while back, and was wearing his traditional backwards hat with a small clump of black hair sticking out from the front.
'Well, if it isn't Kamon…when I heard of the train crash, I hoped that you were dead,' Jet sneered.  He then faced his Sneasel and told him to use Ice Beam on Zapdos.  Moltres, however, joined up with Zapdos and double-teamed Sneasel, and almost knocked it out with a combo of Fire Spin and Zap Cannon.
'Ha, very funny, Jet.'  Kamon gritted his teeth.  'How in the world did you escape from prison?  You were supposed to be in there for another twelve years!'
'Well, it's a long story…' began Jet.
'Make it short, I don't have all day to wait,' said Kamon.
'Heh, well, to make a long story short, I guess, it was a simple matter of having my Alakazam teleporting me out, by establishing a psychic connection with him,' Jet responded.
'And, it took you three years to do that?' asked Carly, jumping into this conversation.
'A psychic connection with your Pokémon is a hard one to make,' Jet said, 'and it took me years to finally somewhat control it.'
'Well,' I spoke up, 'ain't that nice.  But, gee, I wonder…what is missing from this picture…wait!  I know!  It's…why the in the world the three legendary birds are in here!  That's it!' I remarked, sarcastically.
'Shut up!  I don't know who you are, but believe me, I will beat you as soon as I catch these guys,' Jet said, pointing in the direction of the three birds.  In that very instant, and three of them combined their powers, Fire Blast, Thunder and Blizzard, and blasted them at Jet and his Pokémon in one ultimate elemental blast!  This, knocking out Jet's Pokémon in one hit before even touching him, scared the living daylights out of everyone there.  I was the only one to really react.
'Lugia, Teleport!' I yelled.  There was a flash, and the four of us were teleported out of harm's way.
Jet hopped up and said, 'Okay, look, you,' he said, pointing to me, 'I don't need your help.  I can take care of these guys with my own--'  But he didn't get any further, because just then he realized that all of his Pokémon were knocked out from the 3 birds' Elemental Blast.  'Uh…' Jet started.  'Well, er, return all of you.  Hmm…it seems as though I have no way of stopping these guys.'
'You also have no way of getting off of this small island.  Cinnabar is too far away to swim to, and I don't think you can fly.'
'You can just shut up, man.  I will defeat you, whoever you are, as soon as I catch Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres.'  Jet reached into a bag he was carrying and pulled out 10 Ultra Balls.  He hurled three of them at the three birds, but they deflected them with the Reflect attack.  The yellow bird with a long, orange beak known as Zapdos blasted a ball of electricity at Jet, but he barley leapt out of the way.  Jet then got a little flustered.  He realized that he had no Pokémon, and the birds of Ice, Fire and Electricity would quickly overwhelm him.  'You,' he said, 'yes, you!  The powerful trainer…Kamon's friend.  You have to stop these creatures!'
'No way, man,' I responded, 'you got yourself into this, and you will get yourself out.'  At that moment, Articuno dive-bombed my Lugia, knocking it into the ocean.  'Lugia!  All right.  That's it.  Lugia!' I shouted.  Lugia flew from the ocean, and then glared at the three birds, primarily Articuno.  Apparently the three of them saw Lugia and Ho-oh as a challenge.  'Well,' I started, 'if you guys see them as a threat, Ho-oh, Sacred Fire on Articuno!  Use Hydro Pump on Moltres, Lugia!'
Lugia dodged a Spark from Zapdos, and then blasted an aqua sphere at Moltres, doing major damage, and keeping it at bay for a while.  Ho-oh shot a fireball at Articuno, burning it, but not doing nearly enough to K.O. it.  The three birds then tried to triple-team Ho-oh and Lugia, by once again using an elemental blast.
Kamon had his Pokédex out all this time, recording all of the information.  It would appear, or so he concluded, that this was my battle now.  Just then, apparently, he remembered his Entei.
He said, 'Entei, go!  Make this battle a three-on-three!'  His only shiny Pokémon emerged from the shimmering white light of his Master Ball, and immediately began to attack Zapdos, on the account that my Lugia was taking Moltres and Ho-oh was taking on Articuno.  All of the sudden, Bob the Pokédex made a rather annoying beep, and then began to talk.
'Analysis complete,' said Bob, 'data has been collected successfully.  The attack Elemental Blast has been added to the Pokédex.  Data on the legendary birds of Fire, Moltres, Electric, Zapdos, and Ice, Articuno, is complete.'
'So?' asked Kamon.
The Pokédex responded: 'Possible weakness has been determined.  Do you wish to know what it is?'
'Yes!'
'Common weakness between them: Electric-type, Rock-type.'
'Er…is that all?' Kamon asked.  There was a small pause.
'Yes,' it finally said.  Kamon frowned.  'Well, between Drew and I there are two Rock-type Pokémon, and only one Electric-type Pokémon.  Drew,' said Kamon, 'Drew!  Use your Tyranitar and Ampharos!  According to the Pokédex they are probably our best chance against them!'
'Never!' I replied.  'Not unless my Ho-oh goes down.  My Lugia can take a lot, but not from being double or triple-teamed.  If my Ho-oh goes down, though, I'll send out my Tyranitar.'  I then told my Ho-oh to use Psychic, which would hopefully do enough damage to K.O. Articuno.  My hopes were too high.  Articuno used Detect, blocking the attack and then used Bubblebeam, doing a considering amount of damage.
'Entei!  Use Fire Blast on Zapdos!  He hasn't taken any damage yet!'  At this point, Carly decided to step in.
'Donphan, go!' said Carly.  She threw a black Heavy Ball onto the dirt, and from it came a grey and blue Pokémon with reasonably large tusks.  'Donphan, Rapid Spin attack!'  Moltres dodged one of Lugia's attacks, and then headed toward Carly's Donphan.  It used a Fire Spin attack, but it practically bounced off of his Rapid Spin.
'Lugia,' I started, 'Aeroblast it, now!'  Jet watched in awe as Lugia gathered white, glowing energy in between its wings, and then launched it at Moltres, making it slam into the water.
Jet evidently thought of this as an oppurtunity to capture Moltres.  He threw another Ultra Ball at Moltres, but Carly was too quick for him.
'Arcanine, go!  Extreme Speed to knock the Ultra ball away!' she yelled.  Her marvelous Fire Pokémon, with the black stripes running down his beautiful orange fur, dashed as fast as he could to reach the Ultra Ball and then rammed into it, knocking it into the choppy water.  Moltres then rose from the water, and joined his comrades in the fantastic bout.  Articuno was quick to use an Icy Wind attack, damaging Donphan and lowering her speed.
'Entei,' Kamon yelled, 'Fire Blast Articuno!  Then use a Stomp on Zapdos!'  Entei jumped up into the air, and then cocked its head to the side to blast an explosion of flames and fireballs at Articuno, giving nearly the same result to it as it did to Moltres.  Entei, as soon as it landed, then leapt back up into the air and the stomped his foot on top of Zapdos's back.  Zapdos then launched a Zap Cannon attack on it, but Entei ducked and it instead hit Ho-oh, paralyzing and almost knocking it out.
'My…my Ho-oh…return.  For my next Pokémon I'll choose Tyranitar!  Use your Outrage attack on Zapdos.  Make him pay for defeating your teammate!' I yelled.  My monstrous Rock-and-Dark-type Pokémon gathered energy from every living Dragon in a large circumference around our battling area.  He then discharged it at Zapdos, sending it spiraling into the ground below, causing a crater where it landed.  Zapdos was stunned by the force of that attack, and could barely get up when Tyranitar launched another blaze of energy at it, causing a massive explosion!
'Okay, Entei, join forces with Lugia, Tyranitar, Arcanine, and Donphan for a joint-Hyper Beam!' said Kamon.
'No, Kamon,' Carly said, 'my Donphan will distract and hopefully buy you enough time to charge up for the attack.'
'All right,' Kamon and I said together.  I commanded his Lugia to charge up for a full-power Hyper Beam, and my Tyranitar to do the same.  Kamon also told his Entei to use Hyper Beam at the same instant that Lugia, Tyranitar and Arcanine did.  In the meantime, Donphan was trying his best to distract the three elemental titans.
'Donphan, Mega Horn on Articuno!' yelled Carly.  Donphan charged at Articuno, but it used a Blizzard to blow Donphan away, knocking it out.  The three bird's next target: Kamon and my Pokémon.  'Oh, my Donphan!  Return.  Now, Espeon and Vaporeon, go!  Use Barrier, Espeon.  Vaporeon, you use Reflect!  Try to shield Kamon's and Drew's Pokémon!'  Espeon and Vaporeon's attacks could very effectively block any regular attack, but whether or not it could block another Elemental Blast was another thing.
Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres used the ultimate attack, and destroyed the protective shield around the Pokémon.  The readied another one, while at the same time the trainer's Pokémon finally pulled off the joint-Hyper Beam.  They all launched the golden energy to exactly the same spot, forming a massive energy ball, and then blasted it at the three birds.  The three titans of Fire, Ice, and Electricity also fired the Elemental Blast at them.  The two attacks met in the middle, and then there was an explosion, with the force of an earthquake on the ground, and a shockwave like no other in the air.  There was a deafening boom, a white flash, and that was the last thing that we saw before we blacked out.
I, at the first sight of the explosion, ran over to Carly and covered her so that she wouldn't be hurt.  After a couple of moments, everything cleared, including the smoke, and revealed that all of the Pokémon had fainted.  Jet was nowhere to be seen, and the birds were knocked out.  Kamon was laying in the ocean, and so I had to get my Feraligatr to fish him out.  Kamon lay there, motionless.
'Kamon,' I started, 'come on, wake up!'  I slapped Kamon around a bit, and that seemed to work pretty well.
Kamon coughed up some water, and then turned to talk to me.
'Thanks,' Kamon said, coughing again, 'but…what happened to Jet?'  All three of them looked around.  He was no-where to be seen.
The three birds regained consciousness and then flew off again, meaning that Jet had not captured any of them.  Kamon saw his Entei laying on the ground, and recalled it.  Carly and I also recalled our Pokémon, except for our Flying-types, which we used to get back to Cinnabar Island.

* * *

Back in the Cinnabar Island Pokécenter, Carly and I were chatting to themselves, sharing French fries, a chocolate shake-and a few kisses-while Kamon was making a telephone call to two people; his Mom and Prof. Elm.  He decided to call Prof. Elm first, to tell him about the battle and the information Bob recorded.
'Ah, yes, hello Kamon,' said Elm, 'I almost didn't recognize you with your hair cut.  Anyway, what is you called about?'
'Well, professor, I just got back to Cinnabar Island, and on the way here, I got caught up into a battle,' Kamon stated.
'And…' Prof. Elm inquired.
'Well, the battle was between us, referring to Drew, Carly and me, and the three legendary bird Pokémon, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres.'
'Did…did you…did you say Articuno, Zapdos, and…and Moltres?' Prof. Elm stuttered.  'Wow, Kamon, that's…er…that's incredible!  Tell me, did you happen to collect any data from the match?'
'Yes, as a matter-of-fact I did, which is why I'm calling you.  I was going to electronically send the information over to you, and then stop by Professor Oak's so he could look at it,' said Kamon.
'Sure, why not?  Just slide it-'
'I know, I know, into the slot under the screen,' Kamon interrupted.
He slid his Pokédex into the small slot under the screen where Elm's image was displayed.  There was a small zap sound and a white flash, almost like someone had taken a picture of it, and then Bob slid back out.
'Okay, thanks Kamon.  I will start studying this right away.  Ooh, a new attack Elemental Blast…hmm…it can only be performed by the three birds using their own type attack?  Maybe that means that the three dog Pokémon can…' Prof. Elm rambled.
'Uh, Professor?  I kinda need to get off the phone with you now.  I need to call my Mom.'
'Oh, of course, Kamon.  Well, good day and thanks again!'
'Yeah, bye Professor.'  Kamon ended the call.  He then dialed up his mother, to tell her that he was heading back to the Prime League to face-off against Crystal again.  After Kamon had gotten Carly and I off of each other, (how dare he) they finally left to Gehta to try our chance at defeating Crystal, and the Prime League, once and for all.
