Katie yawned, and rolled over in her bed. Her eyes half-opened and quickly shut again as the early morning sun shone into them.

‘Wha? Sunlight? Now?” She shrieked, and looked at her clock.

“Seven thirty. Phew. For a moment there I thought I’d miss getting my first pokemon,” breathed Katie, sighing with relief.

“Although, Ash Ketchum was late, and look where he is now. I mean, he did lose the Pokemon League at the Indigo Stadium, but he’s a great trainer,” mused Katie, now out of bed and getting changed.

As soon as she was dressed, she grabbed her backpack and looked at the clock again.

“What? Five minutes left?” she groaned.

“Oh well,” she sighed. “Better get going. I’d rather be early than late, and if I wait five minutes, you never know,” she continued, and raced out the door.

“Katie!” yelled a familiar voice. Katie smacked her forehead. How could she have forgotten to say goodbye to her best friend.

“Bye, Thom,” she called, waving. Thom was a year younger than her, so he would be leaving next year.

“Bye! Will you come back here next year?” he called back, jogging up to meet her.

“Sure. See you, Thom,” she said, and headed off to Professor Oak’s laboratory.

“Katie, you’re early,” said Professor Oak, opening the door.

“Uh-huh!” Katie said eagerly. “I wanted to make sure that I would get a good pokemon before the others got here,” she said.

“That makes sense. Anyway, all of the pokemon are ready and waiting. Come inside,” said Prof. Oak, and led her in.

“The three starter pokemon are…”

“…Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander,” Katie interrupted.

“Yes, you have been studying, haven’t you?” said Professor Oak, smiling to himself.

“Now, which one are you going to choose?” he asked her, leading me over to a round table with three pokeballs on it.

Katie suddenly realised that she hadn’t decided which pokemon she was going to choose.

“Uh, I don’t know…Um, Charmander I think,” she worried, what if she made the wrong choice?

“Hey, Oak,” yelled someone. Katie turned. Damien, her long time rival, was leaning casually against the doorway.

“What, Damien?” asked Professor Oak, crossly.

“I’m here to get my first pokemon, whaddid you think?” he sneered rudely.

“I would think that you’d mind your manners around your elders. If you’re going to choose a starter pokemon, wait until Katie has chosen,” Oak snapped.

Damien narrowed his eyes and grabbed a Pokeball.

“I don’t wait for anyone,” he said, and headed for the door. Katie saw the word ‘Charmander’ on the Pokeball.

“Hey! I wanted Charmander!” Katie yelled, and grabbed the Pokeball back.

Damien clenched his fists, and grabbed another Pokeball.

“Well, if you think your stupid little fire lizard is so tough, try my pokemon and see me beat you,” he snarled.

“Not in here,” demanded Professor Oak. “All my pokemon are in here, and so is my equipment. If it gets broken you won’t be able to start until next month!”

Damien shrugged and walked outside.

“Okay, Charmander, it’s your first battle,” whispered Katie to her new Charmander. “Just do your best, okay,” she said anxiously, hoping that Charmander would be okay.

“Huh, saying your prayers?” sneered Damien. “Ready to be thrashed?”

“Yeah, but I’m not the one who’ll be thrashed,” Katie said, angrily.

“Charmander, start off with Ember.”

“Go Pokeball.” Damien said, throwing the Pokeball. A small turtle like pokemon popped out.

“Squirtle, use Water Gun,” he said smiling evilly.

Charmander blew a plume of flame at Squirtle, who retaliated with a stream of water.

“Charmander, dodge it. Use…uh, use Scratch,” Katie yelled.

“Your puny pokemon doesn’t stand a chance against my Squirtle. Aim a water gun at that weaklings tail.” He said.

“No! Not his tail!” Katie gasped, and quickly returned Charmander before the water hit the spot where Charmanders tail had once been.

“What kind of dirty trick was that?” Professor Oak demanded, leaving his lab.

“Dirty? I play dirty. If you don’t like it, get stuffed,” Damien retorted, and returned his Squirtle.

To Katie, he said, “Your pokemon’s even weaker than I thought. And you’re a chicken. Maybe some day you’ll manage to put up a fight.” With that, he returned his Squirtle and walked away, on the path to Viridian City.

Katie gaped in disbelief.

“He didn’t even congratulate his Squirtle,” growled Prof. Oak. “Not that he deserved it,” he added as an afterthought.

“Hmmm,” agreed Katie. She took Charmander out of his Pokeball, and crouched down next to him.

“Charmander, char,” (That trainer was going to put out my tail flame,) Charmander said fearfully.

“Don’t worry,” soothed Katie. “I won’t let him harm you. Anyway, I’m tired of calling you ‘Charmander’. I’ll call you Charr. It’s shorter and much easier to say. Okay?”

“Char!” (I like it!) he said, his fear passing.

“Now, let’s go!” said Katie. “All the other trainers have gone.”

“Charmander?” (Can we stay for a while?) asked Charr.

“Why?” wondered Katie.

“Charmander, char.” (I want to meet other pokemon and also your family.) replied Charr.

“Okay,” sighed Katie. “We’ll stay for a day or so.”

“Charmander. Char, charmander char, char?” (Thanks. Now, where do you live?) asked Charr.

Katie laughed. She could see that Charr was going to have a unique personality. They walked together to Katie's house.

“So, what do you want to do?” asked Katie, after flopping down on her bed.

“Char. Charmander, char,” (Dunno. Maybe go down to the pokemon centre and meet some pokemon,) replied Charr.

“Okay,” Katie said. “We can go now, if you’d like to.”

“Charmander, char!” (Great, let’s go!) Charr said enthusiastically.

This is one of my fanfics, and I haven’t gotten very far on it, but I’ll post a chapter whenever I can. Be warned! This is not an ordinary fanfic. It introduces new concepts that I found in another site. Enjoy!

Disclaimer: Do I really have to tell you this?!? Alright, alright, I'll get on with it.

I don't own Pokemon, I don't own Ash, or any of the related characters. The only characters I own are Katie, and Charr (I don't own Charmanders either, but Charr's character is mine) and some other's who'll come into the story later. Please do not steal them, because if you do, and publish it on the internet, I will come down on you like a bad spell. If you really must use my characters, email me, and I might let you use them ON THESE CONDITIONS:

1. You may only use them as a side character (not as the main character)

2. You may not claim them to be your own

3. You must give me credit for the ideas
