Part 2

Unexpected Reunion

(After Satoshi and Marene set off on their journey 3 years later.)

Ages: Brock 18/ May 13/ Max 10/ Misty 16/ Marene 14/ Ash 15/ Satoshi 3 (Satoshi Ash)

Location and Setting:  Marene cried a lot and knew she wouldn’t see her mother for a long time.  They promised each other they would always keep in contact, but Marene’s mother knew her daughter was the type to be distracted.  She would find something or someone to obsess with and she would never call her mother.  No, that’s not true.  That’s not true at all, Marene’s mother wouldn’t have it that way and it would never come to that point.  All of Marene’s family and her closest friends were there to see her off.  Marene’s mother put up a good show; never flinching one bit as her daughter waved as she walked away.

“Okay, I know you’re mad at me, but I have a deal for you,” said Marene speaking to the pokeball as if it could hear and understand her.  “Now, I’m going to release you.  I just want you to hear me out. I’m sorry for being tricky last night, but that was the only way you would stay with me.  Now, please, I’m going to release you.  Please, don’t run away.  And please don’t yell at me.”

As Marene had promised, she threw the pokeball to the ground and a bright flash flared out releasing the young man.

“I can’t believe you did that!” yelled the boy.  “How dare you keep me against my will?”

“Hey, didn’t I ask you not to get mad at me?”

“That’s besides the point.  Didn’t your mother ever tell you not to kidnap anyone?”

Marene, though thick and selfish at time, wasn’t stupid.  There was a certain pattern to her thinking.  It was not at all random the way she maneuvered her actions.

“Of course she taught me it was wrong, but in all fairness, you’re half pokemon and that means that you weren’t fully kidnapped.  You were half captured.”

The boy didn’t think he was ever going to get through to her.  Was there a way to get to her?  There must be a way, but the boy neither wanted to look or wait for one to come.

The boy walked up to her, so close he had been able to kiss her if he wanted to.

“What are you doing?” Marene asked as she uncomfortably backed herself from him.

“I’m… just… going… to…pi…”

Before Marene knew it, as fast as the boy’s reflexes could afford him, he was able to swipe the pokeball he was kept in from Marene’s hand.

“Hey, what do you think you’re doing?” Marene asked flabbergasted as the sheer daring maneuver the boy pulled off.

“I don’t think you’d be able to catch me without this, pi.”

The boy turned around and walked away a little smug that he’d gotten a little revenge for what he’d experienced yesterday.

Marene wasn’t going to take that, not at all.

Marene ran after the boy and kicked him in the back of the leg.  If the boy wasn’t using that leg to walk further, it would hurt more than it did.

“Hey, what do you think you’re doing, pi?”

“You stole my pokeball, you jerk!”

“AHHHHHHHHHHHH! Pikachu” the boy screamed at the girl.  With her distracted from the random act of aggression, the boy took the chance to start to run.  He was fast, too.  It must have been the pokemon inside of him that had gave him the extra speed.  Before he knew it, Marene was only a distant figure yelling at him and shaking her fist as she ran towards his direction.

Now that he’d escape from her, it was time to go home.  Back to the dark forest with Ursaring, Aipom and Bellossom.  It was funny.  All his life, he’d never thought he’d be calling the forest his home; funnier that he’d call pokemon his only family.  It might not be what he originally wanted, but he had to take what he could get.

*****

Location and Setting:  Ursaring, Aipom and Bellossom hadn’t seen the boy in a whole twenty-four hours.  They weren’t worried as much as they were anxious to see the boy again.  Perhaps they had very much caught a strong affection for him.

“I’m back, pi” said the boy proud to have gotten away.

“Where were you all night?” asked Ursaring falling into his paternal instinct.

“I was with this crazy girl who,pi, seemed so determined to be the best.”  The best, he thought.  It seemed like a distant dream, now as it falls off his lips.  The best.

“Do you want to play?” asked Aipom upside down hanging from a tree.

The boy wasn’t tired at all.  Despite how big a pokeball is, it was actually comfortable inside.  “Alright,” the boy answered.

“I’m glad you’re back,” said Bellossom as she twirled and sprung a sweet aroma.

A few minutes later as Aipom finally tired out as the boy fired shots after shots of thundershocks towards his direction.  Both of them were tired, but the aspect of being able to fire projectiles kept the boy interested in training.  That’s probably what Pikachu feels like every he would train.

After finally stopping and getting a drink from the pond, the boy sat down on the root of a tree and closed his eyes.  It was a peaceful scenery out in the middle of the forest.  It was perfect for relaxing.  Somehow, in the middle of the forest, a clearing from the trees was made.  It would be considered a secret hideout if a human found it, but it was a haven for pokemon to rest.

“There you are!”

The boy remembered the voice.  Could it be that she was able to follow him?  Cautiously and with a heart full of hope that it wasn’t her, he opened his eyes to find Marene.

Marene was wet to high heavens, probably from running around the forest.  Actually, they were a long way from where they started and that, too might have been the reason for her being so soaked.  It was almost literally as if she had jumped into the pool.  He took notice to this.

“Why… did… you… run… away?” Marene said breathing heavily.

The best, thought the boy, again.

“Hey, you followed me,” he stated as if he were really expecting that she wasn’t able to considering that she was lost the first time he had ever made contact with her.

“I told you, I am going to be the best… and I need your help,” Marene said with determination as she caught her breathe.  “I won’t take no for an answer.”

The boy remembered how much Marene reminded him of his counterpart.  He would have still wanted to be the best if he was able.  If he had used his name again, it would somehow conflict with his counterpart.  No, he didn’t want to do that.  He didn’t want to meet him somewhere on a stadium and found out that he was the lesser.

“Are you serious about being the best?”

“I’ve wanted to be the best ever since I was a little girl.  I don’t want anything other than being the best.”  She stated that with such confidence.  It wasn’t you idyllic banter, it was fortified passion and sheer will.

Ever since he realized that he wasn’t who he thought he was, Pokemon Training didn’t seem such an important matter.  To understand, you’d have to remember, he’d no longer been himself.  It would be a lie if he answered to something he’d never done.  Think of it this way; you’ve seen your uncle ride the horse many times; for years now.  Now, can you honestly say you know how to ride a horse if you were only a spectator?

“You said you knew about Pokemon Training.  You must know what it’s like to train pokemon.  You must enjoy the prospect of out on a journey in search of pokemon.”

What was the boy doing?  He’d been in the forest ever since he became aware of his situation.  Would the real Ash Ketchum have stayed this long in one spot?  It wasn’t him who promised his mother that he’d become the best.  The person who said that to their mother was, Ash Ketchum.  But still, he loved Delia as much as Ash did.

“Pika,” the boy started, “you’re right.”

“?”

“I said you’re right.  It’s the most wonderful feeling in the world when you train pokemon.  I enjoy thoroughly, I can honestly tell you that. “

“Then, are you going to be my pokemon?  Marene asked with a lower lip.

“NO!” The boy exclaimed.  “But, what I’m going to do, I’m going to be there with you giving you advice on what to do.  That is, if you let me follow you for that position?”

“I don’t know, you following me?  It would have it’s benefits, but still, you really aren’t battling for me when I want you to.”

“Don’t be so picky.  I can tell you a lot of things about pokemon battling.  I’ve learned from many of the best.”

“You’re advise better be really good, or I’m going to have to let you go.”

“Don’t worry, I bet I’m good for more than just good advice.  I’m very handy in the dark.”

“Okay, with that settled, I’m just going to put you in your ball.  Give me the ball.”

“No, let me just do something before we discuss the ball problem.”

The boy turned around and gathered Aipom, Bellossom, and Ursaring.  To say goodbye, perhaps?

“So, you’re leaving?” asked Ursaring lacking luster in his tone.

“We’ve had a good time.   I hope we see you again.”  Said aipom as he put up a smile hanging upside down on a tree branch.

“You need to take good care of yourself when you’re out there,” advised Bellossom.

“Wait!” the boy interrupted.  “I don’t want to forget all about you three.  So, I want to ask if you want to come with me.”

“Out there?” asked Aipom.

“Isn’t it too big?” asked Bellossom.

“Way too big to ever imagine, Bellossom,” answered the boy.

“You three can go if you want, just leave me out of it.  I’ve seen what the human world has to offer, I don’t want another look.”

The boy always caught that from Ursaring.  He never like getting out of the forest.  Ursaring was always adamant about being careful not having the humans find out about them.

“Ursaring, please, I want you to come with me.”

“I’ll come with you,” offered Aipom.

“That’s goes for me, too,” Bellossom volunteered.

“Come on, Ursaring.  We’re like family now, we can’t leave without you,” pleaded the boy.

“I’m not coming!” Ursaring said standing firm on his decision.

While all this was happening, Marene stood at the side line as she wondered what the pikas, and bells, and poms and urs were all about.  Either way she was beginning to become inpatient with all that was happening and she took a seat at the trunk of a tree.  You could tell she wasn’t the patient type of person.

Is this ever going to go anywhere?

“Ursaring, okay.”  The boy sounded like he gave up.  “I respect you too much for me to keep asking you for something you obviously don’t want to do.  All I can say now, is thank you.  You’ve been more like a brother than just a friend.”

Ursaring had tears in his eyes.  It started to hurt after a while as he kept his eyes wide open in an attempt to hide what he really wanted to do.

“Okay,” said Ursaring, “I’ll come with you.  Brothers shouldn’t be parted.”  He was a tough pokemon and he kept it that way.  It was important for his pride and his image.  Despite all this, he was a true friend to the boy.

Location and Setting:  They were all ready for the travel.  The only problem was the gang.  How strange would it be fore two trainers to be traveling with a Bellossom, Aipom, and Ursaring just out and about?  It would have been a challenge getting from place to place.  The only solution was for Marene to capture them.  It was a harsh argument, but Marene was right.  It had to be that way.  Along a small route, Marene and the boy walk discussing the fine art of pokemon training.

“I thought you said that you aren’t suppose to make them fight?” asked Marene confused by his whole definition of what a Pokemon Battle was.

“I only mean for a trainer to give it their all like it was a fight,” he elaborated, “just like life, you can’t just trudge on like it was walking a dog.  You have to be passionate it.  Pokemon can sense that passion and that drives them to battle their hardest.”

“Oh, I see.  Why didn’t you put it that way earlier?  It sounds a lot better than how you explained it earlier. “

“Marene, it looks like you’re starting to get there.”  Complemented the boy.

“Hey, that’s the first time you called me by my name,” said Marene as she had realized that it was.

“It was?” the boy thought.  “Yeah, I guess you’re right.  It is the first time I called you by you’re name.”

“Hey, I just noticed, you never told me you’re name.  What’s your name anyways?”

The boy had to think hard about that one.  In all fairness, he couldn’t call himself ‘Ash’.  That was Ash’s name.

“My name is… it is…  it was a struggle for him to come up with something at a moments beckon.  It never came up to him on what to call himself.  It was a wild idea; what if we were able to pick out our names from the very beginning.  What if our parents didn’t have to give us our names?  “Bob, maybe?”  The boy thought to himself.  “My name is… it is… you can call me... SATOSHI.”

“Fine, then I’ll call you Satoshi.  So, Satoshi, who are you anyways?”

Satoshi sulked having to answer another hard question.  “Marene, I just know that traveling with you is going to be an adventure.”  And it is going to be.

Location and Setting:  Three years later.  Traveling with Marene all this time made Satoshi very much attached to her.  She was the Trainer of the group and he was the Coach, the Friend, the confidant – if you will.  Not all the time they spent with each other was pleasant.  Like any couple out in the world, they had fights and arguments; though it was never ever very serious.  It was minor fights like whose fault it was for the lack of food that night, or who forgot to close the toothpaste and now there is toothpaste all over Marene or Satoshi’s backpack.  All in all, it was friendship.  Along the way, Marene became a better Trainer.  She was tactical when it became to battling, she became aggressive, she became patient, she became a real Pokemon Trainer; Satoshi was proud.

Continued: Passed Kanto, passed Johto, passed Hoenn, passed the Battle Frontier, even passed Orre; Satoshi and Marene finally get to show what real team work is like.  An invitation to a giant Island was sent out to the best of the best of the new generation of Pokemon Trainers and Marene was invited.  Conciliation for this invitation was for her to bring along a partner that she could have a double battle with.  The proprietor of the Island is a renowned Pokemon League associate who had retired from his spot on the board and independently opened his own league.

Continued:  At the Pokemon Center.  On some sort of mishap on the plane ride there, Sastoshi and Marene somehow got to the Island first out of everyone else.

“Come on, Marene.  I want to explore the Island before the other combatants arrive and plague up this place.” Yelled Satoshi from outside the restroom.

“Satoshi, just wait up!  You’re acting like you need to be walked.”  Marene kept her disposition.

“I’m just anxious to see what this place has to offer.  I bet there’s going to be a lot of strong trainers.  Hopefully we’ll see a lot of strong pokemon as well.”

“Yeah, yeah.  Of course we’re going to find strong Pokemon Trainers.  Only strong Pokemon Trainers were invited to this Island.”

That was true.  Marene had become strong in the last 3 years.  Traveling from place to place, from gym to gym.  Satoshi and Marene had even found themselves in the gym of Brock and Misty.  Luckily for Satoshi, he was able to cover himself up with a hat and glasses when he had visited.  Also, it was lucky that Brock had his brother take over the gym and Misty her older sister Daisy, Lily and Violet.

“Just come on, the pokemon are getting restless.”

“Satoshi, the pokemon aren’t getting restless, you are,” said Marene matter-of-factly.

Marene had another point.  Aipom, Bellossom, Ursaring and Marene’s other pokemon were actually of need of rest as they had practiced all day yesterday.  It was only Satoshi who was anxious to see the Island.

“You’re just like a girl to take forever in the restroom.  What are you doing in there anyways?”

Marene was appalled.  “Satoshi, remind me to smack you for even wondering what a girl is doing in the restroom not to mention actually asking. “

“Okay, take your time.”

Location and Setting:  At the Island airport.  The plane itself was filled with Pokemon Trainers.  It was the 3rd plane that was to arrive to the Island and there would be 6 more planes to arrive.  They were lucky to have gotten to the 3rd plane; it was rumored that the other planes that would arrive with more trainers than they had now.  It would have been really messy with everyone clogged up like that, not to mention pokemon like Pikachu who chooses to stay out of his pokeball.

“It’s too bad Max couldn’t come,” said the boy with the cap and a Pikachu on his shoulders..

“Well, Ash, Max had to fill in for Dad in the gym.  There was no other way.”

“Yeah, you’re right, May, it would have been a lot more fun, though.”

“Cheer, up Ash, you know it’s his responsibility,” offered Brock.

“Come on, Ash, are you ready to compete?” Asked Misty.

“Alright!” Ash yelled in excitement.  “This is going to be great.  May, Brock get ready.  Misty and I are going to go all the way.”

Misty blushed finding Ash’s statement a little awkward.

*****

Setting and Location:  Two weeks ago, Ash received his invitation at home in Pallet Town.  Recently, things have been a little slow as Ash had decided to take a break from his travels.  It was a welcomed improvement from his daily task of taking care of the pokemon at Prof. Oak’s ranch.  It wasn’t like he didn’t enjoy taking care of the Pokemon, it was actually really fun and he learned a lot along side of Tracey.

In Hoenn, May received the same invitation.  The invitation left specific instruction of where the Island would be and how to get there.  It also left instructions on what the battles would be like.  The description read:

Dear hopeful participant of the Island competitions;

Having been a Pokemon League representative for the last 45 years, I know what it takes for a Pokemon Trainer to get to where they are today.  It takes team work from the trainer and from the pokemon.  All those invited are fit that description.  That’s a great way to live; peace among trainers and pokemon.

However, there have been many atrocities among man and man.  This competition is a special competition that shows the brotherhood of humans.  You are to invite another trainer and show the world that humans can work together.  This is a double battle like no other.

You are invited to compete in the Island.  Bring a friend.

Back in Pallet Town, May had picked up the phone first and contacted, Ash.

“Ash, I just received a letter from some sort of competition and it says that I can bring along a partner who’s going to battle with me against other trainers.”

“You too?” Ash exclaimed surprised.

“Ash, you received one, too?  So, do you want me to be you’re partner?”

Ash was hesitant.  “Actually, I was thinking that I’d bring someone else along.”  Ash flinched just a bit after he spit it out and May could see that he did over the video phone.  “But, I know that for a fact that Brock is free to be your partner.”

May looked a little disappointed.  “Who are you going to take, Ash?”  May asked as if she was trying to interrogate, Ash.

“Well, I know that Misty’s sisters are going to be there for the next few months and I did promise Misty when I head out for another Journey, I was going to have things like it was before.  So, I’m going to bring Misty along.”

“Oh, I see,” May said giving Ash a kind of look.

“Hey, what about Max?” Ash suggested, “I know that he’s a confident trainer now that he’s been defending the Petalburg gym.”

“He can’t, he has to stay while my Dad goes to a his annual meeting.  I guess I’ll have to ask Brock.”

“Sorry, May, but I’ll definitely see you there.”

“Don’t worry, Ash, I get it.”

“Are you mad at me?”  Ash asked worried he might have offended her.

“Just a little bit… just kidding.”

Ash smiled at her.  “Okay, I’ll see you there.”

*****

Setting and Location:  Two hours later, the giant Island began to look not so big after all the trainers and tourist had arrived.  Satoshi and Marene left early enough to see the sights of the Island and found it to be very beautiful and magnificent.  The preliminaries are about to begin right before the orientation.  Almost have a thousand trainers were there grouped together facing the massive podium for the representative to arrive.  Marene and Satoshi came early and was able to get in spitting distance of the stage.  Unknowingly, right behind them was Ash, Brock, May and Misty.

“Ouch!” spouted Marene at Satoshi.  “Satoshi, you stepped on my foot.”

“Oh, I’m sorry Marene,” Satoshi apologized.

Misty did a double take and couldn’t believe her ears.  Was it, Ash?  No, it couldn’t be.  But it sounded it sounded just like him.  No, Ash was to her left.  Never mind.

“Hey, Brock do you think we have a good chance of winning?” Asked May.

“Of course we do.  You’ve become a great trainer from what you were like before,” Brock answered.

Satoshi twitched.  Could it be?  He had heard the voice before or at least found it very familiar.

“We all have a good chance of winning.  This is double battling with another trainer, we’re all going to do great,” added Misty.

Satoshi twitched again.  That girl’s voice also sounded very familiar.  Could it be that it was actually them?  During this whole time, traveling with Marene, Satoshi had many close encounters with his counterpart.  It was close, but it was never this close.  At events such as a tournament, or a resort somewhere, Satoshi might have caught a glimpse at them passing through, but they were never in speaking distance of each other.

If it was them, what would he do?  Would he go to them start off a conversation and tell them who he is?  In actuality, Satoshi had so much wanted to let Ash know of his existence, but he never thought of a way he could actually come out and say it.  What would they say to him if they knew?  They might have just brushed it off as if he were just some crazy guy who coincidentally looks, sounds and acts like Ash; though that would be farfetched.

“Ouch, Satoshi you stepped on my foot again!” yelled Marene facing Satoshi looking really angry.  “Stop doing that.”

“Sorry,… I mean sorry.”  Satoshi began to apologize but caught himself and tried to disguise his voice.

“What’s wrong, Satoshi, did you swallow something right, now?”

“No,” coughed Satoshi still trying to hide his voice.

“You don’t sound too good, Satoshi?  What’s wrong with your voice?” Marene asked again.

”Nothing, it’s just a little sore,” Satoshi explained.

Seeing that the blonde guy in front of Brock was having a tough time speaking, Brock pulled out a cough candy out of his pocket.

“Hey,” Brock said as he patted Marene on the shoulder, “you friend looks like he can use a cough candy.  Here, give it to him.”

“Thank you,” Marene said as she reached for the candy.  “My friend would really be appreciative.

“That’s okay,” said Brock, “I made that myself out of all natural ingredients.  Believe it or not, that’s actually a pokeblock.”

“Wow, you made this.  It smells really good.”  Marene gave it to Satoshi, practically shoving it in Satoshi’s mouth because he wouldn’t open it.  “That’s rude Satoshi, you should thank people who are nice to you.”

Satoshi was stiff and all he could do to repay Brock at the moment was to put his had up and wave at him while still facing forward so Brock never go to see his face.

“Satoshi, aren’t you going to thank him personally?”  Asked Marene.

Satoshi didn’t budge an inch.

“Alright, if you’re not going to turn around and apologize, I’m going to have to turn you myself.”

Marene took hold of his shoulder and kicked Satoshi’s right leg and pushed him towards Brock’s direction.

As Satoshi was about to face Brock, Satoshi suddenly got the idea to fake sick and ran away right before Brock got a full view.

“Huh?” said Marene flabbergasted by Satoshi’s lack of punctuality.  “I’m sorry, my friend isn’t usually like this.”

“That’s fine,” said Brock, “he looked really sick though.”

if you excuse me, I have to see what’s going on with, Satoshi.  By the way, I never caught your name.”

“I’m name is Brock.”

“Well, again, thank you for offering, it’s really  nice to meet you, I hope to see you again.”

Marene walked away in search of Satoshi leaving Brock to wonder what was going on with the person.

“Well, that was kind of rude, wasn’t it?” Asked May.  “That guy didn’t even look at you Brock.”

“He was sick, I understand.”

*****

Location and Setting:  From the legions of Pokemon Trainers out in the orientation field, Marene was able to find Satoshi who seemed to be hiding behind a trash can.

“Satoshi, are you alright?” Marene asked sympathetically.

“I’m okay now, Marene,” answered Satoshi.

“Satoshi, are you sure you’re okay?  It looked like you were really sick.”

“Marene, I’m fine, now.  I was just a little excited about the competition.”

“Are you sure?  I just want to make sure that you’re okay.  Also, take off that hat!  No one is going to think that those ears are real.  They’re probably going to think that you just a Pikachu fan.”

“I’m not wearing for that reason.  I’m just…”  Why exactly did Satoshi wear a hat.  From the time Satoshi had finally gotten his things in order; in his request, Marene bought a hat for him.  Maybe it was to cover his ears.  Or, maybe it was instinctual, just like the original Ash who has the habit of wearing a hat.  “I just do it because I’m fond of wearing a hat.”  Then it hit him.

Satoshi took off his backpack and took out a towel and wrapped it around his face.  “Marene, can I borrow your glasses for a moment?”

Marene was beginning to think that Satoshi was crazy wrapping himself up.  It wasn’t hot, it was warm.  Really, even if he wrapped himself in a towel, it would only make him sweat more than normal.  But, since Satoshi claimed that he was sick before hand, it might not be a good idea.

“Satoshi, are you sure you didn’t get too much sun?  And what do you need glasses for?”  asked Marene.

“Please, you have to trust for now, Marene.  I’ll explain everything when it’s all over, okay?”  The expression on Satoshi’s face was so sincere.  How could Marene say ‘no’?

“No, Satoshi, tell me now?” Marene demanded.

“Marene, just wait till we get back to the Pokemon Center and I’ll tell you everything.”

“No, tell me now!” Marene demanded again.

“Marene, for the last time, just give me the glasses and I’ll tell you when this is all over!”  This time Satoshi was more firm on his demand.

“Here then!” Marene finally gave Satoshi the pair of sun glasses.

“Thank you,” said Satoshi exasperated, “always so stubborn,” Satoshi said just under his breathe.

“I heard that, Satoshi.”

“Fine, do you think I care?”

*****

Location and Setting:  After the orientation.  The Island proprietor made his debut and gave everyone his good fortune.  Afterwards, every couple were given a number and was scrambled up and randomly put in divisions.  Everything was set, now the battle begins.

Satoshi kept an eye on Ash and Misty as they stepped up to the battlefield.  Satoshi was curious how Ash’s battling skills had developed from the time he was created.  It would make sense that he was better now than before.

“Are you ready, Misty?” Asked Ash facing down their competition.

“I’m ready, Ash.  We’re going to win this one.”  Misty was confident.  She hasn’t been hanging out with Ash for a while, but she knew how good he was the last time.

“Aren’t you two getting ahead of yourselves?  You haven’t even seen our pokemon yet,” said one of their competitors.

“Don’t worry, these two are over confident.  That’s going to be their downfall,” said the other competitor.

Finally the referee stepped forward and began the match with a wave of a flag.

Misty started it off with her Gyarados.  “Gyarados, I choose you!”

The two brought out their pokemon at the same time a Nidoran and a Primeape.

Ash was the last to choose.  “Swellow, I choose you!”

“Ash, I’ll go defensive. Let’s finish this fast,” yelled Misty to Ash.

“Okay, we’ll get them in as fast swoop.  Swellow, fly and gather momentum.”

Swellow did as he was told and flew up in the sky and began to circle around again and again confusing the trainers and their pokemon.

Seeing that they couldn’t do anything about Swellow, the competitors decided to attack Gyarados.  Luck for Gyarados, he’s very strong willed and defense was almost impregnable.  The down side is his side and lack of maneuverability.  Gyarados had to try twice as hard to try to hit Nidoran and Primeape who were very much smaller than he was.  To no avail was he able to catch them one bit.

“Ash, do you think it’s time?” asked Misty for Gyarados’s well being.

“Just a few more…. And…. Swellow, Sky Attack!”

Nidoran and Primeape saw that Swellow was coming and back away from Gyarados.

“Are you kidding, us?” said one of their competitors.

“Yeah, do you know the ratio of that attack?  You’ll never be able to get our pokemon, they’re too small a target.” Said the other competitor.

“Can you believe these two actually qualify to be in this competition?”  Said one of their competitors.

“Go ahead, laugh all you want,” said Ash with a sly smirk on his face.

“Yeah, just wait!” yelled Misty towards the other trainers.

Swellow was fast, almost to the blur of light.  He dived down towards Gyarados as if Swellow was targeting him.  What was going on?  Was Ash deliberately trying to hit Gyarados?  With that velocity, there wasn’t going to be a way to dodge in time.

As Swellow was about to hit Gyarados, Misty ordered, “Gyarados, Hydropump!”

“Swellow, Aerial Ace!” Ash ordered and Swellow within an inch of Gyarados swerved in their opponent’s direction.

With a blink of an eye, Nidoran and Primeape were off somewhere 20 feet away of the stadium.

“The winner is:  Misty and Ash!” announced the Referee.

Satoshi didn’t expect Ash to be that good, but he also didn’t expect anything less.

“Wow, did you see that guy and girl?  That was an amazing tactic!” Marene praised.

Luckily, Marene wasn’t the type to look at facial signatures and also Ash was too far away for her to notice the resemblance to Satoshi.

Location and Setting:  A few more matches later, it was May and Brock’s turn.  It wasn’t as spectacular as Ash and Misty’s match, but Brock and May won the match none-the-less.  It was clear that Ash and Misty were Satoshi’s biggest competition.  Then, a few more matches, and it was Marene and Satoshi.

Marene was feeling sort of embarrassed as Satoshi came out to the stadium with his face covered by his hat, her sunglasses and the towel that acted like a turban.

“Are you ready?” Said Satoshi barely heard as he was muffled by the turban in his face.

“What?  I can’t hear you Satoshi!”  Marene yelled in his direction.

“I said, are you ready.  Again he was barely heard.

“What did you say?  Just take that stupid towel off your head!” Marene again yelled in Satoshi’s direction.  “You look like an idiot, just take it off!”

The crowd couldn’t help but laugh at the two argue.

“I’m not taking it off, Marene!”  Satoshi yelled.

“I still can’t hear you.  Just take off the head gear!”

Again the crowd laughed at the two.

“See, look, everyone is laughing at you.  You look like and idiot.”

Brock remembered the girl from before.  He also remembered the young man who she was with.  He also remembered he was very sick.  It must just be the young man trying to keep his illness from the audience.

“Fine then, I’ll take off the hat., but that’s all”

Still Marene wasn’t able to hear Satoshi.

Satoshi took of his hat and revealed a beautiful golden blond, yellow hair.  Then the crowd roared in laughter as they saw his Pikachu ears.

The referee finally interrupted them and got the match underway.

Satoshi and Marene’s opponents let out a Ryhorn and Muk.  It was going to be hard, but Satoshi welcomed the challenge.

Noticing that the turban was going to be trouble for him, Satoshi loosed it to have a piece of his mouth open.  He also decided to speak in his Pikachu language just in case Ash and the others were looking and listening.

*****

Location and Setting:  “Rocket 1 calling Rocket 2, come in.”  Said a Team Rocket member to another. Rocket 2 informed Rocket 3 and Rocket 3 informed Rocket 4.  This continued all the way to Rocket 204.  The Island was surrounded.

“Boss, this is Rocket X, we have secured the perimeter. Each squad is ready and willing to go.”

“Remember, Rocket X, they’re all professional Pokemon Trainers.  Commence!”

*****

Location and Setting:  It was Satoshi and Marene to bring out their Pokemon.

“Pika chu,”: Satoshi yelled out sending Bellossom out.  “Pika pika.”

Everyone was stunned to hear Satoshi speak the way he was speaking, even Marene.

“Satoshi, what are you doing?”

Satoshi didn’t answer Marene.

The audiences were very confused to why he was speaking that way.

Who were really surprise were the pokemon who understood what he was saying all along.  Pikachu, who was one Ash’s shoulder, slapped Ash to try to get his attention.  This was because Pikachu knew exactly what Satoshi was saying and the weird part was, Satoshi sounded just like Pikachu himself.

It was Marene’s turn to let loose her pokemon.  She kissed her pokeball, then threw.  “Aipom, I choose, you!”

“A Bellossom and an Aipom.  This is going to be easy,” stated one of the competitors.

“Let’s make this an easy and fast match.”

Satoshi ran towards Marene, which wasn’t against the rules, and whispered in her ear, “Marene, let’s confuse them.”

“Right, but why are you getting so close and speaking in your pokemon language?”

“I’ll explain later.”  Satoshi then ran back to his side.  Marene wanted to hassle him for the answer, but she knew it just wasn’t the time.

And the match had begun!

“Aipom, give Belllossom a piggyback ride!” ordered Marene.

Aftewards, Satoshi ordered something in pokemon language.

Ryhorn charged at Aipom with Bellossom riding on back.

Aipom dodged and separated with Bellossom.  Bellossom threw Stun Spore, but Ryhorn dodged and went after Aipom.

As Ryhorn charged Aipom, Aipom threw Stun Spore on Ryhorn paralyzing it.

“Good job, Aipom!” congratulated Marene.

“Ryhorn can no longer battle!” announced the referee.

Now, it was only Muk.

“Brock, did they plan that from the start?” asked Ash.

“I don’t know, Ash.  But it was a pretty smart tactic to confuse the opponent by acting like they didn’t know what was going on.  In reality, it was ruse to lower their guards not to mention a way for an Aipom to use a grass type move.”

“Those two are pretty, smart,” commented Misty.

“Yeah, that’s when they’re not arguing.  They remind me of two other people I know,” stated Brock.

“Okay, Satoshi.  Just one more and we win this one,” said Marene.

Satoshi ordered another attack.  Bellossom then began to powder the stadium with Sleep Powder.  This all happened while Aipom distracted Muk, which was easy to do as Muks are usually very slow when moving.

In no time, everyone in the stadium including the opponents, Muk and even Marene was asleep.  The only one not asleep was the referee and Satoshi.

The only reason why the referee was still awake was because he was given a gas mask.

Satoshi was barely awake because he had the turban; which was not against any regulations.

“Pika pika pi,” ordered Satoshi towards Aipom.

A loud rumbling came from Aipom.

“I get it now, that’s Snore attack,” exclaimed Brock.

When Muk was finally awake, he was drained and was not fit for another match.

Bellossom also woke up, but was fine with and rested.

“I wonder why Bellossom isn’t affected by Snore?” asked May.

“That’s because Bellossom is used to Aipom’s snoring.  Those two are in sync with each other and you can really tell.”

“Pika pi,” ordered Satoshi.

Bellossom did as she was told and fired a barrage of Razor Leaf.  Normally, Muk would have been able to refleck the attack, but I t wasn’t its normal self and his body was harder than it usually is.  Muk finally fainted, as Bellossom danced in victory.

“The winner of the match is, Marene and Satoshi!” proclaimed the referee.

When Marene woke up, her head was in Satoshi’s arms as he put her to a sitting position.

“Good morning!” Satoshi said with a smile.  “We won the match.”

“Great, wake me up when we have to go again.”

*****

Location and Setting:  A few more matches started and finished.  Randomly, their next opponent were mixed again.  This time, it was Ash and Misty, versus Satoshi and Marene.

“Marene, before we go on our next match.  I have to tell you something before this battle.”

“What is so important that you have to tell me, now and not later?” asked Marene.

“Marene, don’t get too excited about this.  That guy, Ash; he looks exactly like me.”  Satoshi began walking to the stadium leaving Marene to wonder what he was talking about.

“Satoshi, what do you mean?”  Satoshi didn’t answer.  “Satoshi, answer me.  What did you mean?”

Marene followed Satoshi to the stadium and looked at Ash.

Satoshi was right!  He looked exactly like him.  The height, the stature, the hair; except for the darker complexion and the blonde yellow hair; he was similar.

“Satoshi, is that why you’re wearing that turban around your face?”

Satoshi didn’t answer.

It was weird for Satoshi.  For the last 3 years, he looked at himself in the mirror and saw not Ash, but someone else.  For the last 3 years, he looked and saw nothing but a body without a past, and at times he even though he had no future.  Now he looks at a mirror and finally sees Ash.  It was like waking up from a dream or running in a wheel and finally being able to reach the finish line.

“Before we start our battle, Satoshi, I’d like to say you two have to be one of the most creative couple I’ve ever met.  I hope this battle is a really good one.”  Ash looked at Satoshi as he spoke, yet he did not move nor say a thing.

“Satoshi, don’t be rude,” said Marene speaking for Satoshi.

“That’s okay, Marene, I guess this is how he prepares for a battle,” stated Ash.

“I really think you two are creative as well, Marene,” said Misty.

“Thank you, I think you’re a creative couple, too.”

Satoshi almost cringed at the idea.

“Actually, we’re just friends,” explained Ash with his face turning bright red.

“Oh, oh I see.  No, me and Satoshi aren’t together, as well.  We’re just good friends,” Marene explained.

“Enough of that,” yelled the Referee.

And the battle had begun.

Misty reach for her pokeball inside her backpack.  Normally, Misty wasn’t the messy type and the articles in her backpack would be more neatly stored than it was at the moment.  She had to jumble a few things to actually find what she was looking for.  As she reached down, she let go of the strap of the pack and let it drop.  In doing so, a bright electric light burst forth and the announcer had already announced it.

“Misty takes out what seems to be her Psyduck.  I can’t wait to see what these kids have in store for us with a psychic pokemon,” announced the Official Announcer.

“NO!  Psyduck, what did I tell you about popping out when ever you want to!” Misty said screaming at Psyduck.

”Psy?” said Psyduck with a blank expression on his face.

“Hey, you have a Psyduck, too?” yelled Marene in Misty’s direction.  “Okay, let’s make this interesting.”  Marene kissed her pokeball and began to throw, “Psyduck, I choose you!”

It was Ash’s turn to pull a pokemon out.  “Snorlax, I choose you!”

Satoshi was a little jealous to see that Ash had a Snorlax.  Satoshi had experienced, or rather believed he had experienced a Snorlax before.  They were very hard to train.  They ate and slept all the time that it didn’t really matter if you train them because of their massive size and great defense, not to mention juggernaut strength.

Satoshi had to chance it.  Tactics alone isn’t going to help Satoshi and Marene win this one.  It’s going to be hard, but with the combination of smart strategizing and the right amount of strength and determination, it was going to be close.

“Pika pi,” announced Satoshi.

The ball shot the right light again and out came Ursaring.

“Ursaring,” Satoshi called, “I know that Psyduck, don’t hit it on the head or cause it any bodily harm.  If you do that, you’ll just make him bring out his true potential.  You got that?”

“Ursaring,” answered Ursaring.

Satoshi ran up to Marene close enough to whisper in her ear again.

“Satoshi, why are you being so secretive?” asked Marene.

“Never mind about that, I just wanted to tell you not to pay attention to Misty’s Psyduck.”

“Huh, why not?” asked Marene.

“Marene, look, I know what I’m talking about.  That Psyduck isn’t able to fully use his potential without help from the other trainer.  Look, if Misty builds her Psyduck’s headache, it’s going to become stronger than your Psyduck.  I know, please just trust me.”

“Tell me, first,” Marene demanded.

“Marene, I’ll tell you when this is over, just please do as I say and trust me for now.”

“Satoshi, just tell me, I know it isn’t going to be that long.”

Satoshi just walked back to his side.

“Snorlax, use body slam on Ursaring!” commanded Ash.

“Pika pi,” commanded Satoshi.

“Psyduck!” yelled Misty in frustration.  “Just get in the middle of the ring and try to get hit.  It doesn’t matter who hits you, you just have to get hit in the head enough times.”

Satoshi was right, that Psyduck isn’t able to use his psychic abilities.  Thought Marene to herself.

“Psyduck, keep you’re focus on Snorlax, the other Psyduck isn’t able to do a thing!” commanded Marene.

“Huh?  How did Marene know about my Psyduck.

Ash knew it was going to be a two on one battle with Psyduck unable to do a thing.

Ursaring couldn’t match strength with Snorlax and he didn’t try.  Rather, he distracted Snorlax while Psyduck hit him with Confusion and Watergun attacks.

Misty had to do something.  At this rate, Snorlax would be over powered and the match would be over.

“Ash, I need your help,” Misty asked Ash.

“Sure!”  Without Misty having to tell him, Ash ordered Snorlax to put Psyduck’s head inside his mouth.

“Oh, no!” yelled Marene.  “That’s going to bring Psyduck’s true ability.  “Psyduck, use hypnosis on Snorlax.  He’s too busy with the other Psyduck to be able to do dodge.”

Snorlax fell back and dropped on the field.  Everyone heard a thump around the general area.  But still, Misty’s Psyduck’s head was still in Snorlax’s mouth scrambling for dear life trying to escape.

Finally, Misty’s Psyduck stopped berserk motions.  An aura around Psyduck jimmied Snorlax’s mouth open and Psyduck floated out as if he was able to walk on air.

Oh, no!   Tought Satoshi.  I just knew this was going to happen sooner or later.  Now, it going to have to be a real battle.

“Alright!” exclaimed Misty in excitement.  “Now, we can battle back.  Psyduck, you Psychic on Ursaring.

Psyduck used Psychic and lifted Ursaring in mid-air and kept him that way.

“Now, Psyduck, use the rest of you Psychic attack and fire your strongest Psybeam at the other Psyduck!” commanded Misty, again.

Psyduck did as he was told and fired all of his ability at Marene’s Psyduck.  It was going to work, too.  There was no way to avoid such a powerful attack.

There’s only one way justify getting hit like this, thought Marene.  “Psyduck, use Destiny Bond!” yelled out Marene.

“Destiny Bond?  No!” screamed Misty in regret for using a fully powered Psybeam.

It was already too late.  Both Psyducks were out; fainted.

Misty’s Psyduck’s powers over Ursaring no longer applied and he fell on the ground.  As Ursaring got to his feet, the Referee waved his flag.

And the winner is…

As the Referee was about to announce the winners, Snorlax had woken up.

No! Yelled Satoshi at himself.   I was so close to beating, Ash.

It was about beating, Ash.  It would be that he was his own person.  It would be that he too was, Ash.  Or maybe even better than Ash.  Satoshi didn’t know how to consider, Ash.  Was Ash suppose to be his friend, his rival, an acquaintance?  Did he have to like him?

“Okay, Satoshi, it’s just you and Me.  Let the better trainer win,” declared Ash.

Satoshi was finally fed up.  Fed up of what?  It was just like every other battle he’s been in.  The only difference is that the match was going to be more difficult than most other matches.  Is it because he was facing, Ash.  Facing, Ash, the lucky one who gets to stay with Misty and Brock.  The Ash that get to stay in contact with his Mother, Gary, Prof. Oak, his other friends and family.  The Ash that was able to go home again.

Satoshi finally spoke out in human language.

“Ash, this is going to settle once and for all who the better of us is.  I’m not going easy on you one bit!” said Satoshi declaring, not at all suggesting a thing.

Ash couldn’t believe what he was hearing.  It sounded like he was speaking to himself from across the field.

Misty, too was surprised on how dead on Satoshi sounded to Ash.

“Alright, then.  If that’s the way you want it, let’s see who the winner is going to be!” fired, Ash right back.

“Ursaring, Hyperbeam!”

“Snorlax, Hyperbeam!”

As Ursaring and Snorlax were about to make their move, a helicopter descended from somewhere and was floating just 20 feet off the ground.

“Hey, disturbing an Official Pokemon League match is illegal and punishable by law.” Spoke the Referee towards the helicopter.  “I’ll have to ask you to leave immediately!”

In the helicopter, a man sat there and pulled out an amplifier.  “Hello, I’m Giovanni, leader of Team Rocket,” he announced.  “For years now, I’ve kept my little secret identity of the industrial superpower, but now, I’m ready for my thrown.  To do this, I’ll need all you’re pokemon.”

The crowd was in an uproar.  No one was willing to give their pokemon willingly.

“You’ll have to battle us first,” said a random face in the crowd.

“Yeah, we’ll fight Team Rocket with all our ability!” yelled another random face in the crowd.

“Fine,” said Giovanni, “I knew this was going to happen and I was prepared.  If you would look at the prompter, you’ll see that there is now way out of here.”

Around the Island, massive pillars were erected along with 50 Team rocket members around each massive pillar.

“See those pillars?” asked Giovanni.  “Those are field generating devices and there are about 300 of them surround the whole perimeter of the Island.  Each one of those pillars is being guarded with 50 or more of Team Rocket members.  Each one of the Team rocket members are equip with two or more pokemon.  You won’t be able to stop them all.”  Giovanni took out his cell phone.  “Rocket X, turn on the force field.”

On the monitor, a opaque, pinkish barrier connected those pillars, and formed a dome.  Giovanni wasn’t kidding.  Fifty feet in the air, everyone could see the the force field.  They were going to be in for a fight.

“Giovanni, you’ve gone too far, you Fiend!  On the monitor and elderly man who somehow looked familiar to Ash made his presence known.

“Ah, Mr. Goodshow.  It’s nice to see you, again!”

“Wipe that smirk off you face!” Ordered Mr. Goodshow.  “Never in a million years did I ever believe you would have the audacity to pull something so horrid as this.”

“Save you’re lectures, old man, I’m going to do what I want and no one is going to stop me!  Rocket, movie in!” Giovanni ordered.

All around the Stadium, from the seats, the entrances, from anywhere you can think of, Team Rocket members made their way in.  There were hundreds of them surrounding every exit there was.

“You see, Mr. Goodshow, there’s nothing you can do to stop me.  It’s already, too late.”

“Giovanni, if you don’t stop this now, there’s going to be trouble not only for you, but for everyone.  Pokemon may not get involve in human matters, but if they see they have to step in, they will and we’re all going to pay for that.  You have to see that there’s a balance between humans and pokemon!”

“Old man, you’re beginning to sound senile.  Don’t you see that the only thing you’re afraid of is my power?  I will have to ability to control everything with my power.  I will be a living immortal.”

“You don’t get it, pokemon know what we’re doing to the world.  If you don’t stop this now, they’re going to do something about his.”

“It doesn’t matter if they do, I’m ready for anything.  To prove it, I’m even going to shut you up, Mr. Goodshow.”

In the room where Mr. Goodshow was broadcasting, the door that was looked behind him blew in and explosion and members of Team Rocket raided the old man.  After a few moments of Mr. Goodshow kicking and fighting back, Team Rocket left the monitor blank.

“Hey!”  Yelled someone in the ground.

“Huh?” said Giovanni in astonishment.  “What’s this, is someone trying to get my attention?”

“I said it you, jerk!  My name is Ash Ketchum and I’ve seen too much of what happens when the powerful become hungrier for power.  I’ve seen it first hand about what Mr. Goodshow was talking about.”

“You there, boy!” Pointed Giovanni towards, Ash.  “You say you’ve see power.  You haven’t seen a thing.  Not the pokemon that I saw.  Not the most powerful pokemon that ever walked this earth.”

“I have seen, Mewtwo!”

“Huh, you know about, Mewtwo?” said Giovanni in shock.

“He is powerful.  He’s the most powerful pokemon ever, and if he finds out that humans are doing this, he’s going to comeback for you.  He’s going to bring his friends, too and he’ll get you.”

“Don’t get me angry, boy!”  The smirk he had before appeared again.  “I see that no one here believes me.  Okay, I guess I’ll have to prove it.” Giovanni pulled out a golden pokeball from his side pocket.  “Dragonite, I choose you!”  A Dragonite appeared flying, keeping pace with the helicopter.  “Dragonite, let’s make a martyr out of someone.  Dragonite, Hyperbeam!”

The beam took time to charge.  It took longer to charge than any normal Hyperbeam.  When the beam finally fired, it was aimed at the ground towards Ash.

The beam flew in a streak of massive energy traveling at least 100mph.  It was as if Ash’s life strolled through his head remembering the most littlest of details: about everything.  He remembered his father teaching him how to ride a bike.  He remembered his mother feeding his as a baby, the old fashion way of feeding a baby.  He remembered climbing the hills of Pallet Town where he had lived most of his life.  He remembered asking his mother about making another brother or sister he would like to have at the age of 5 years old.  He remembered being 10 years old and meeting Pikachu for the first time.  He remembered the day he met Misty.  The way he stole her bike.  The way they met Brock.  They way they met Tracey, May and Max.  The remembered that those people are the most cherished people in his life.  He remembered that they’d be friends for the rest of his life.  Then he thought about his mother who was at home right now wondering where her son is and if he’s safe or not.

The beam got closer, neared his head, passed just by a centimeter and headed directly for… Misty.
