THE BLACK LEAGUE Chapter 4 I woke to the sound of Houndour growling quietly into the darkness of the pokemon centre. I couldn't see a thing so I turned on the small bedside lamp at my side. I saw, to my astonishment, a small tail poking out of my bag. I got up quietly and made my way over to the bag. The tail continued moving around and it was obvious that whatever pokemon was in there was unaware of my presence. I pounced as soon as I was close enough and found myself holding a slippery, slimy pokemon. I got out my pokedex. 'Wooper, a water/ground pokemon. It is the unevolved form of Quagsire.' I was so excited at having found another pokemon that I didn't even bother listening to anything after 'Wooper, a water....'. I immediately sent out Mareep and he emerged, still drowsy, from his pokeball. 'Thunder Wave', I ordered. Mareep quickly complied but nothing happened. I then realised that it was also a ground pokemon. I returned Mareep and Scyther attacks with a vicious Slash. The Wooper immediately fainted. The pokeball I threw closed over the fainted form of the Wooper and I looked at my watch with shock. The events which had unfolded had taken over a hour. It was almost daylight and Nurse Joy would probably be on duty by now. I got dressed quietly and exited the room. Nurse Joy was sitting behind her desk, yawning every now and then. I walked up to her and handed over my pokemon. A few minutes later they were all fully healed and I released them. They sat quietly while I enquired about the next gym from Nurse Joy. She informed me sleepily that it was the water gym and was located in the large Crimson City, a few miles south of the town we were currently in. The gym leader was Misty, a powerful trainer who had become a gym leader in the Black League after leaving her Indigo League post and winning all the other leagues. However, she had been defeated in the quarter-final of the Black League by John and had taken up the Gym Leader post immediately after. I thanked her and we set off for Crimson City. The weather held fine and by the time the sun was directly above our heads, we had walked far and even managed to train too. The Wooper was quite strong and had fought a practise battle with Houndour, which it had been closely defeated in. It's Water Gun was extremely powerful. Meanwhile, I had scavenged around and seen a few rare pokemon. I even found a Magnemite, but it fled. However, when it was floating quickly away, it had banged off a tree and dropped a Metallic Coat item. I found out that it raised the power of steel moves, but, since I had no Steel pokemon, it meant nothing to me. However, I gave it to Scyther to hold as he seemed very interested in it. We continued on quickly after another hour's training, at the end of which Mareep evolved into the more powerful Flaaffy. At around 6 I heard the sound of a battle and walked towards the sounds. We came into a clearing and found Mike and Amanda battling each other. I watched quietly from the cover of the trees. Smoochum was battling Elekid and the Elekid was winning comfortably. It used Fire Punch twice and the Smoochum was KOed. I clapped and they turned, startled. 'Why didn't you meet us', demanded Mike, as Amanda looked on impassively. 'You weren't on the helicopter either so we thought you had disappeared'. 'I went by foot', I replied, 'and I got some rare pokemon. You want to see'. They both looked eager and I called on my pokeomn to come out and say hello. Amanda gasped audibly when she got a look at my team, strolling casually along. Mike's mouth dropped as he drooled shamelessly. 'How did your Scyther get so big', Amanda asked. I hadn't really noticed but Scyther was growing at an alarming rate. I cheacked my pokedex and was informed that, according to his size, he was at roughly L25. Most of my other pokemon had also grown considerably but Houndour was huge. He had learned Flamethrower and Crunch and was poised to evolve any day now. Wooper was still quite small but very powerful. 'What are your teams like now?' I asked. Amanda had caught a high-level Pidgeotto and Mike had snatched a Butterfree. The Pidgeotto had a slightly bluish tinge to it's wings and when I commented on this Amanda informed me that this was because it could use water moves. She guessed that it's father must have been a water pokemon for such a strange occurrence to happen. We decided to travel together and set off for Crimson City. We arrived just as the sun was setting and stared in awe at the huge skyscrapers towering above us. We headed for the pokemon centre which was about five times larger than a normal one. It was also 4 storey's high. We walked into the absolutely spotless waiting room and were confronted with about 10 Nurse Joy's sitting behind different counters. We walked up to a free counter and had our pokemon healed. Nurse Joy told us that the Water Gym was located at the top of one of the huge skyscrapers but refused to tell us which. 'Part of the challenge is actually finding the gym', she told us. It was getting late so we turned in for the night. I woke to the sound of Nurse Joy screaming about an hour before dawn. I rushed out to the reception area but stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the horrible sight which I was confronted.
