Disclaimer: I don’t own Pokémon or Chrono Cross…(wish I did…) Ages: Ash-16, Kai-16, Misty-16, Kid-16, Brock-21 Apocalyptic Beginnings Chapter 1: Trouble Brews I spread my wings to show their void black undersides, and roared with pain. Blood dripped from a wound upon the brilliant white of their backs. I knew I would not be flying for quite some time. Flames shot from my mouth, engulfing my foe in a fiery inferno formed entirely of dragon-fire. “Now I’ve got to find a Healer for my wings, but before I do,” I lightly blew fire across my wings, “I’d better cauterize the wounds.” ~2 days later, in town~ “Much better. Thank you,” I told the Healer. I spread my wings, and with a single powerful flap, took off. Once in the air, I let out a roar of pleasure. ‘It feels good to fly again!’ I thought, still roaring my pleasure to be in the air once more. “Oops, sorry. Heh, heh…” The villagers were looking at me funny, probably because I was roaring my tail off. “Ha, ha, ha, ha! It is time for me to FEAST!” The voice was a hissing, rasping sound that penetrated my mind, making me shiver. The villagers were not as lucky. They froze with looks of terror on their faces. ‘A Fearenoc! Oh no, I’ve got to do something fast!’ Fearenoc feed on human fear and despair, usually chowing down on the human at the same time. I pulled out my bow and knocked an arrow. As I pulled back on the string, lightning began to swirl around the arrow and the head began to glow brightly with a sky-blue light. “Oi, pea-brain!” I called to the hideous green/black lizard. It had a lion’s tail, legs, mane, teeth, and a dragon’s wings. It would be truly beautiful, if it weren’t a piece of evil slime. It looked at me and roared, “What? An Arcane Forester!? DIE FOOL!” I let my arrow fly when it looked at me and opened its mouth to blast me with its wretched breath. The force of the arcane explosion that occurred when the arrow struck something deep in its fetid maw tore it to pieces almost instantly: what wasn’t torn to shreds was incinerated by the lightning that swirled around within the magical blast. “Humph! Stupid idiot! It didn’t stand a chance!” ‘Be nice Chaos! It didn’t know what it was up against!’ “Yes, but whoever sent it knew.” ‘You got me there…’ “You folks ok? Everyone alright?” The unanimous reply was “yes, but a little shaky,” with varied levels of confidence. One person had actually fainted! “Now he’s weak-minded.” ‘Yeah…” “What happened here!?” A girl, judging by the voice. The Fearenoc had managed to wreak a good amount of damage, despite my display. They’re fast…really fast. I folded my wings against my back, and they glowed white before they disappeared. The glow, however, alerted the girl to my presence. “Huh? Were you thrown up there by the Fearenoc?” “No,” I answered her question truthfully: she would know if I were lying or not, seeing as Fearenoc never turn down a meal. “He was the one who killed the Fearenoc!” one villager exclaimed excitedly. “Oh? Interesting…I’ll have to look into this at some point.” The girl was about my height, and had golden blonde hair that would probably be down past her shoulders if it wasn’t tied up in a ponytail with several small red ribbons. She wore an open red vest over a white shirt, both of which cut off before her midriff. She had on a short red skirt with a brown belt hanging loosely around her waist. The color of the dagger sheath on the front of her skirt matched her necklace: purple. She had a white mark on each cheek. For some reason, the only thing I could think when the tranquilizer dart hit my shoulder was: ‘Her eyes are stunning, such a deep sapphire blue…’ Of course, I was also able to tell Chaos not to take over once I lost consciousness. Chapter 2: Rescue ‘Huh? Chaos, where are we?” “Some sort of research facility. I contacted Kid using your… abilities…She’s planning a rescue right now. Oh, she was the girl in that village yesterday.’ “Halt! Identify yourse— arrrgh!!!” BOOM!!! The pod I was in shattered and as I leapt forward, I pulled out my barong and felled the nearest security guard. The idiots forgot to take my weapons from me! Kid had used her mastery of fire magic to make a giant explosion to help me out of the place. I met up with her in the main hallway, time to have a little chat. “Chaos says hi.” “Oh? Does he?” she asked skeptically. “Ok, he doesn’t. He says that ‘if you have a plan, than it had better come into action sometime soon, and if we survive without a plan, he will personally tear you limb from limb.’ That’s word for word.” I answered truthfully this time. “Lovely.” Kid muttered. ~outside, 20 miles from the facility~ “So, what have you been up to?” We had set up camp in a small clearing and were sitting by a fire. “Well?” Kid was pestering me for answers. “There’s nothing much to tell, I’ve just been wandering around taking jobs. I’ve earned the name ‘Quicksilver’ for it. I’ve gained quite a reputation in these parts.” I related the last year to her including info on Lynx and his lackeys. “So,” I asked her, “what have you been up to, Kid?” “Oh, the last thing of significance that I did was kill Lynx. Other than that…it’s been a bore.” That was unexpected. Traveling with Kid had always been a blast. That she could do something that she loved and not have fun was worrying. “Wha-!? Why would it be a bore!?” I exclaimed in surprise. “It’s just, where do I go now? To tell the truth, I’m lost. I don’t know what to do now that I’ve killed Lynx. My entire life as far back as I can remember has been about avenging my sister’s death.” Was Kid’s only reply. My mind was reeling; this was too much information to take in at one time! Then an idea struck me, and I took my chance. “Hey! Why don’t you come and work with me? It could be just like old times! What do you say?” “Huh? sure! I’d love to!” “Oh great, not another one of you Freelancers! Help me…” “Oh shut up Chaos.” That was Chaos for you. Or maybe…maybe he was right…oh whatever! Chapter 3: Freelance “Impressive…” Kid was dumbstruck at how I fit all of this equipment in a little three-story house. “Some rooms aren’t filled yet, and the entire office system is wired through the phone. Here, come and see your room.” Once up the stairs I opened the door to a good-sized room that was, “It’s almost empty except for the bed,” Kid observed. “Well, of course, I’d rather let you personalize your room than already have it in a state that didn’t fit you. My room is almost too full, and I need a place to move some furniture. Actually, the furniture I need to move is in the storage closet on this floor. Put your stuff on the bed and let’s go eat, I’m starving!” I thought it sounded a little like a small speech. “Ha! You’re always starving!” “HA! She’s got you there.” “Touché. Some support you are Chaos.” ~after dinner~ “Whoa, that feels weird! I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that!” I yelped as I felt something inside of me change. “What is it?” “Chaos just went dormant for a while.” ‘I think…’ I could never be sure. I noticed Kid’s eyes flick towards the window briefly. “I need to show you something.” She muttered. “Huh? What do y—?” I stopped when she gave me one of her death glares. She closed her eyes, and I noticed a soft glow behind her that formed itself into…“Wings?! And a tail?” “Oh no. Please tell me that she’s not going to be a flying airhead like you!” Kid caught on right away. “Like you? What does he mean by that?” Her wings were folded by her sides like shields. Suddenly my wings and tail appeared, scaring Kid out of her wits. “That’s what he means.” “That’s not all I mean…” Chaos grumbled. “??????????????…huh?” Kid muttered. “Oh, a couple days ago I nearly flew into a blimp and the day before that…” “Yes?” I didn’t answer right away. “I was almost impaled by a jagged rock, if Chaos hadn’t taken over, I’d be dead…because I heard some disturbing news.” There was an awkward silence before Kid answered, “I’m sorry.” “Don’t be, it’s not your fault.” Suddenly the phone started to ring. “Hang on.” I said as I picked up the phone. I answered it with my usual, “Quicksilver’s the name, variety’s the game. How can I help?” I listened for a bit then, “Satoshi! Long time no see! How are ya? Good, good. Me? I’m fine. So, why’ve ya called? Mm-hm. Uh-huh. Right. The earliest I can be there is noon tomorrow. The price?! I’m waving the fee. No. Huh-uh. No. Friends don’t pay.” I hung up before he could protest. “Same old Satoshi.” “Sounds like it. He’s gonna be so scared when he sees me. Heh, heh, heh.” Kid had a mischievous glint in her eyes. “Yeah, he’s been terrified of you ever since you stabbed him with your dagger,” I laughed. “C’mon, we’re going to Kanto!” Chapter 4: Kanto “Oh man, that smarts! A diamond mallet studded with sapphires. Ouch!” I said just loud enough for my voice to carry across the 2-3 meter distance. “Huh? Oh, hey Kai! How are ya?” Satoshi looked the same as ever. “You asked me that about an hour ago, you dolt! Or do you have short term memory loss?” I yelled. “HEY! Only I’m allowed to call Ash a dolt!” yelled a girl next to Satoshi. “Actually Misty, you’ve never called me a dolt, just dense,” he muttered. “Hi, Satoshi,” Kid said in a mock flirtatious voice. Of course, they didn’t know who was with me until she said anything. Jealousy and anger were written all over the girl’s, Misty’s, face. “AHHH!!! Stay away from me!!!!!” Satoshi started to slowly back away. “Awww, you wouldn’t want to hurt my feelings now would you? Heh, heh, heh,” Kid said with a fake hurt face. She was advancing slowly. “Just keep that dagger away from me!” Satoshi was obviously terrified, but what he did next surprised even me! He stood up, and with a quick glance at Misty’s mallet, walked over to Kid, smiled, and held out his left hand for her to shake. “Let’s just forget about it, ok?” Something was up, I could tell. Kid smiled and shook his hand. His eyes narrowed the instant she griped his hand. Quick as a flash, his right hand shot out and grabbed her by the waist. He flipped her into the air and knocked her back to the ground in one fluid motion. “Ow! What was that for?” Kid was glaring at him. “Payback,” was all he said. ~at Satoshi’s house, 11:14~ “So, wha’dya need?” I asked quietly so that I wouldn’t wake anyone up. He explained the situation for the second time that day…with a few extra details. My hand was at his forehead almost instantly. “Are you sure you’re alright? Are you sure you don’t have a fever?” I checked the hallway to see if anyone was listening in on us. I shut the door and, “WHAT ARE YOU?! CRAZY?! Am I hearing this right? You are falling for a human girl?!?!?! Quick, schedule a funeral, Satoshi has caught a fatal disease!” I said, a bit louder than needed. “Hey! I’m human to! Why shouldn’t I like her?” “Because you’re not as human as you think. Being who you are, you are only half-human. In fact, you’re probably aren’t human anymore, meaning that you cannot fall for this-this human girl, Misty. Don’t you see? It will result in death! For both you and her!” I hoped that would be a powerful enough incentive to stay away from her in that sense. Obviously not. I sighed. It was time to take drastic measures. “Satoshi,” I growled, “my vow to protect you prevents me from allowing you approach this girl, and yes I know she has a name, in that sense. And I can tell from the glint in your eye that you aren’t listening to me.” I warned. “Of course I’m not listening to you, I have a reason to believe that…” he whispered something in my ear, and my eyes widened. “B-but, it may take years for her power to awaken, even if you are correct! Ah well, just remember not to make your move until I fall on the ground in pain.” At that very same I was racked by extreme pain and fell to the ground, clutching the water symbol (hint, hint) to the right of the giant, jagged, X-shaped scar called the Sealing Star. I let out a roar of pain loud enough to shake the foundations of the building. Instantly the door burst open and kid came charging in, Misty just getting up and brushing herself off. “What the hell is going on in here?!” Kid shouted at the top of her lungs. My roar increased in volume as Misty walked into the room (wink, wink). Finally (after Misty had learned that the closer she got the louder my roar) I stopped, gasping, and looked up at Satoshi. “Ok, you got me,” I said to his unasked question.
