Disclaimer: I own nothing but my characters and Laren with all its towns. If I did own Pokemon there would be a lot more candy in my house. Mmmmm… chocolate.

I scrolled through the search results, searching for anything that could assist me in my upcoming journey as a trainer.

I didn’t want any of that nonsense you get in turn based battles. Every attack could be a counter attack and when the opponent lets his guard down it’s the end.

I already knew a lot but I was as nervous as Whismur. Under normal circumstances, I’m not a big fan of research, but these were by no means normal circumstances. Becoming a trainer is a big step and I should be prepared. Looking up battle strategies, pokemon info, and the lot.

“Kathy, dinner!” came a call from my mother. Only then did I realize how hungry I was as I rushed down the stairs with the speed of a Dodrio.

My real name is Kathryn, Kathryn Roberts, but everyone always calls me Kathy. I’m a 12 year old girl with long brown hair. I live in a far off town called Cherry Town in the Laren region. I’ve lived here as long as I can remember. Tomorrow I am going to become an official pokemon trainer.

My mother had prepared a special going away dinner with all my favorite foods. My dad had to work away and was rarely home, as was the case tonight. All in all, Dad and I don’t converse much.

“Could you pass the mashed potatoes, Mom?” I asked. Suddenly she burst into tears.

“What’s wrong?” I inquired.

“Sorry,” she sobbed, “but it’s just that this is the last time we’ll have dinner together for a very long time. The house will be very lonely without you.” She then blew her nose with a nearby tissue.

“Don’t worry, Mom, I’ll send you an e-mail once I reach Professor Cedar’s,” I reassured her, “Anyway, I’m full, and I’m going to need a good night’s sleep for tomorrow. Night.” I gave her a hug and rushed off to bed.

How I got to sleep that night I can’t imagine. I was way too excited for my first day as an official pokemon trainer. The next morning I rushed to pack some stuff. I panicked. Where was my backpack?

“Mom,” I asked in a worried tone, “have you seen my backpack?”

“Sorry dear,” she replied, “I thought I’d pack a few things for you. There’s some food, pokechow, and some pokedollars for the journey.”

“Thanks Mom,” I laughed, taking my bag, “You’re always one step ahead of me.”

I decided also to pack some poketreats, a tent, a sleeping bag, my stuffed Pichu (I never sleep without it), some emergency supplies, and various other belongings.

There were many teary good byes as I left but if I went into them this story would be about ten pages longer.

As I waved goodbye (finally) I wondered what was to become of me on my journey to become the best trainer in the region.

I clambered onto the bus that would be taking all the new trainers to Cedar’s place. We had to take the bus because we were not permited to go through the woods without a pokemon to protect us.

We lived in the far off region of Laren. Quite a few years ago a couple of rich pokemon collectors with too much time on their hands decided to establish a region where all the (non legendary) pokemon from Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn could live in one region. Thus Laren was born and after years of importing and breeding it is now complete. I think that they are now currently working on making a new pokemon through different breeding techniques.

The bus came to a screeching halt that brought me to my senses. We had arrived. I was numb all over and felt rather sick in my stomach I was so worried.

When the new kids arrived, Professor Cedar started his speech. I groaned inwardly. He droned on about what a responsibility pokemon were, different paths we could take, and such.

Then, finally, Professor Cedar was handing us pokeballs, our pokedexes, and our trainer IDs. He then led us to his assistant, Holly.

She seemed nice and promptly started to explain how we were to receive our starter pokemon.

“I’m going to give you each a random pokemon,” she instructed, handing us the balls, which were blue instead of red, “This will not be kept but used to catch your starter. Not only will this give you a chance to catch your favorite but to change how your pokemon feels about you. Depending on how you catch and treat it this could be anything from respect to fear. You will be catching your starter from our pokemon habitat. Once I say ‘go’ you have until sunset to come back, pokemon or no. GO!!!”

I waited until the crowd passed so I wouldn’t be trampled. I wasn’t sure where to start so I just started walking. I knew the basic idea. I wanted something powerful, rare, and preferably cute.

I was in a dome shaped building. It was huge! The walls were transparent allowing the sunlight to stream in. As far as the eye could see were different terrains specialized for different pokemon.

By lunch time I still hadn’t had much luck. I put some pokechow in a bowl hoping to attract hungry pokemon.

At first all that passed by were Weedle and Ratata, and I did not hesitate to shoo them away. By now I had already finished lunch but seeing as the surrounding terrain was so diverse I decided to stay a while. The hungry pokemon soon turned from Weedle and Ratata to Oddish and Polywags.

The rarity of the pokemon continued increasing slowly but steadily as time went on. I still didn’t see anything I wanted and was starting to get impatient. Then I saw it. It was a beautiful Vulpix with a stunning red coat. It wasn’t timid like the others either. It boldly walked up to the food, sniffed, and took a bite. I could tell it wasn’t your average prissy Vulpix either. I had to have it.

It continued coolly eating. I sent out my blue pokeball and out came a Voltorb. Well, it could’ve been worse, I thought to myself. The Vulpix knew what was coming and prepared for battle.

“Voltorb, thundershock!” I ordered. Direct hit!

A bit shaken by the attack, Vulpix quickly regained its composure and let out an ember. It hurt, but Voltorb took it.

“Voltorb, tackle it!” I commanded. Voltorb charged for the Vulpix and it took the challenge. It turned into a fist fight (as much as pokemon have fists). The pokemon brutally laid blows on each other and I was left feeling utterly unimportant.

This continued on for a while. By now the Vulpix could barely stand, not that Voltorb was doing much better. At this point I threw one of my empty pokeballs. One shake, two shakes, and out came the Vulpix. It still had some fight left in it.

My Voltorb wouldn’t last much longer. I pulled out my last line of defense.

“Voltorb, self destruct!” I yelled. Obediently the pokemon let out its trump card, creating a huge explosion.

When the smoke cleared I found that Vulpix had, in fact, fainted. “Yes!” With no time to lose, I quickly threw another empty pokeball. It shook once, twice, thrice, and with a ping I allowed myself to breathe again.

I just then realized that I was shaking, picked up the ball, and sat down for a rest. I caught it! I started back to the meeting place skipping for joy. I had caught my first pokemon!

I got there early and waited for a while. Eventually Holly started letting kids back into the Professors lab. He healed our new pokemon, checked them (I wonder why?), made sure we all still had five pokeballs (I only had four at the time), and took back the blue balls.

“Now if you’re looking for your first gym badge you should head westward to Orchid City,” announced Professor Cedar, “Good by and good luck!”

As I walked out the door, I pondered as to what would happed to me and my Vulpix on my journey as an official pokemon trainer.
