Chapter Seven

            The silent Vulpix breasted the hill and waited. White vapor hovered gently as it was expelled at every breath before floating away. A cold wind swirled around warning of the coming of winter ruffling the copper fur on his chest and the cub shivered slightly. Leaves of light gold and warm orange stirred with the breeze revealing wilting grass. Yes, winter was most definitely coming.

            Feeling a presence behind him the red fox whirled. There was nothing there but empty space. Feeling foolish for thinking that he could catch the perpetrator he called out with good humor, <My Lady.>

            “My friend, had goes it then?” Was the amused reply. The voice was light as a silver wind and tinkled like little bells. The voice was also filled with wisdom as well as everlasting youth. It was most definitely feminine.

            <I have gain access to the hybrid. It’s a far cry from trust, but it is a start. I tried the cute cub act, but I fear I lost patience with her. She’s wary now, and stubborn. Actually, more like ornery.> The Vulpix said brisk and confident. He had done fairly well. Well enough to complete his lady’s wishes. Continuing, <I cannot be so certain about the other. She’s built quite a hard shell around herself. There is only one that she loves in this world. Her nature has made her hard and closed.>

            “I expected as much. Jamis has had a rough time of it. More so than her sister even.”

            <My Lady…> Taz started out hesitantly as if unwilling to relate the next bit of news for it was disturbing.

            “Please, just call me Mercedes for now.”

            <Not…> The clever fox began then trailed off understanding. He nodded in respect and continued, <Mercedes, the hybrid I’m with…>

            “Mirei.” The mistress supplemented patiently.

            <Yes, she has done something rather dangerous. She killed one of her pursuers. You know well how the enemy will react. They will try to exterminate her as soon as possible. She plays a key part in the little chess game between you powers.> Taz shook his head regretfully. He pursed his lips and barged on, <Naki made a grave error as well. It nearly killed her whole pride, but you were already aware of that, weren’t you?>

            “Very. She did her job well and no one was hurt so bad that I could not heal. Her mate Singe got the worst of it, however, he is fully recover.” She said suddenly serious. Adopting a chiding tone she teased, “That is off subject. Is there something you wish to avoid? You seem to be doing a lot of verbal dancing.”

            <She suspects something. Not only is she insightful and perceptive but she’s also very willful. Already she had inquired into my past for which I cannot answer. She tolerates me, but nothing more. I fear that gaining her trust will take too long.>

            “I am afraid I have no solution to your problem. If you invoke the name of Naki it may drive her away or bring her to heel. Either could be disastrous for she is needed as she is. I know you cannot speak the truth of your past either for it is so tender. Also, you must not mention me for fear of breaking the rules. You can only do as much as you have been. Hope will pull us all through this. Hope and faith.”

            <Hope and faith.> The tiny fox snorted quietly looking pained. Talk of his unmentioned past was surfacing bad memories.

            Images from the past flashed under the calm surface of his bright jade eyes. One of the many changes brought about by extended use of his gift. In time they would be lustrous silver from extended usage of his power.

            Images flashed of his Lady and one of her companions, the Time Keeper if he recalled correctly, finding his limp body. His body as a young cub, much as it still is, laying half in a ditch of cold, murky water. A wicked wound had slashed across his vulnerable throat. Crimson liquid raced down his creamy throat and chest dripping down to the ground. Red mixed with the dark brown of the mud making black. His forest eyes were slits of pure agony.

            It was then that his life returned. It was then that he came into the service of his Lady. He regained the powers of speech through powers she had given him. That had been the day he had become Vulpine, servant to the great Mew.

            Mirei stared moodily off into space. The little Vulpix had disappeared leaving her to her thoughts. She considered running off in the hopes of leaving the creepy psychic fox behind, but she knew that he would follow. He had gone off before only to emerge about an hour later whether she had been on the move or not.

            Thoughts that she had so far avoided started coming up. Why hadn’t Jamis heeded her plea? Her sister could have easily stopped the Houndoom in his tracks. It was true that Psychics had no hold over Dark, but her sister had been also trained extensively in physical attacks. With her mass and bulk she could have easily pinned down the lighter dog. Mirei hadn’t though that their sisterhood had stretched so far as that. Not that the Arcanine hybrid would ignore her in such a situation. Their link had remained. And with that link they shared emotions, thoughts, and images. Mirei had made sure that it was open when she screamed for help.

            Why then had she been ignored? Jamis knew she wasn’t lying about returning peacefully. They couldn’t lie to each other. Jamis also wasn’t scared of the Dark creature. As long as Mirei had known her, Jamis had never been afraid of anything. Not needles or humans. Nothing had frightened her. Things were far too confusing.

            Mirei growled suddenly and raced forward blindly. She smashed into something and went sprawling back. Collecting herself, she rose to her feet and mentally checked herself for hurts. Nothing seemed broken or hurt really. Just a few old bruises awaked from her tumble.

            “Whoa babe, slow your ponies down. You could really hurt someone charging around like that.” A deep voice remarked smoothly causing her to look up in surprise. She had thought herself alone when she bolted.

            Looking up abruptly she found herself gazing into a pair of intense emerald eyes of a cat. A dark pink nose was the next noticeable feature then the jet-black whiskers. A thick white ruff surrounded his jaw and a slight beard jutted out from beneath his round chin. His coat was black with discreet chocolate markings covering his lank body. His tail curled and was extraordinary in length. Silver lined his ears and a diamond of spun silver decorated his blunt forehead.

            “What are you?” Mirei blurted out in shock and shamefully hid her face at her rudeness. She peered up to see the stranger unruffled by her insensitive remark. He looked at her in a cool, unconcerned way with a satisfied gaze.

            “I could ask the same of you, babe. You ain’t like nothing I’ve ever laid eyes upon.”

            “Um…” Mirei remarked wittily finding her tongue was tied in knots. She blushed and averted her eyes towards the ground. Summoning courage she answered hesitantly in a bashful voice, “A hybrid.”

            “Eh, what’s that? Doesn’t matter much I guess.” He replied lightly as he scratched an ear with tipped claws. Shaking his head energetically he looked her over again. Seeming to make up his mind he smiled brilliantly, “I’m the evolution of what the humans call Persian. Amazing no? A freak of nature if you please.”

            Mirei, for once on the giving end of praise for being different, retorted hastily, “That’s not true. You’re you.”

            “So I am. You’re pretty smart, babe.”

            <And you’re pretty rude.> Taz remarked strolling up tensely. He was bristled and ready to fight. The copper fur along his tails had risen and the reddish hair on his nape was fully extended. A snarl pasted his lips and his eyes flashed a sodden green.

            “I’m been called rude before. So tiny, what are you planning to do? Jump me? Hardly advisable young friend. I have more experience as well as size.” The evolved Persian remarked completely unconcerned. Teasingly he licked a forepaw. Silver claws flicked out in a subtle show of power and the silver jewel flashed warningly.

            <State your business.> Taz requested stiffly ignoring the taunts. His eyes remained fixed on the cat’s smug face. If it came to a fight he wanted forewarning.

            There was an awkward silence before the dark cat rose to his big paws. All play had left his demeanor and it had been replaced with deadly intent. Silent outrage played across his reflective eyes and he leaned forward studying his small opponent. Making a decision he leapt for the Vulpix with lightning speed. His claws closed triumphantly and he snarled in delight. Until he realize that he had caught nothing but air. Whipping his tail in a wraith he whirled.

His opponent was waiting patiently just yards away as if he had been there the whole time. Satisfaction radiated from the fox and power gleamed suddenly discernible to the Persian’s eye. Seeing his mistake he scrambled mentally to make things right. This was no place for a showdown.

            “Just fooling with you there.” He said forcing out a hearty chuckle so as not to show how it stung, “As for your question, my name is Raj. I was just having a chat with that cat over there. Sorry babe, I didn’t catch your name.”

            “Mirei.” She said silently raging about the attack Taz had launched or rather instigated. She decided to have a few scalding words with him later on. He had no right to harass her friends. For Raj was just that she realized with a jolt. Biting back a growl she addressed the fox in a prim tone, “I can speak for myself you know.”

            The little creature looked hurt then miffed. He stifled a protest looking sullen. His nose wrinkled in distaste as his gaze shifted over to Raj. Unveil hate and suspicion crowded his narrow face and luminous eyes.

            “No hard feelings there I hope.” The cat said lightly with an underlying malice for the fire pokemon. Mirei didn’t catch it, but Taz did. His eyes narrowed, but he held his tongue. The enemy was among them he was sure. Didn’t his willful charge see that? He tried to imagine what his Lady would command him to do but failed. Sighing in defeat he settled on patience.

            <None at all.> Taz grated out.

            “How ‘bout we all go get some chow? I’m staved!”

            <Why not?> The fire fox jabbed then his eyes widened dramatically and he spat, <Oh, could it be because I just ate. You two go ahead.>

            Mirei was all to happy to leave the sulking kit behind as her new friend led the way to the best restaurant in town. He found it suspiciously easy to get rid of the fox and found it unsettling. And it was difficult to unnerve Rajah Panthra.

Jamis stared regretfully at her intended target. Once back, home they had set her straight to work on a new mission. The lab needed fully evolved pokemon to complete their research and in their eyes, the only way to get them was to steal them. It did not do to soil the hands of a human so they entrusted the job to one who could not be traced. Some one like her. She was good at her job and there was little chance of messing up this mission. Especially since it was so simple.

"What do you say Umbreon, should we eat now?" The spike hair trainer asked his pokemon companion conversationally. He looked comfortable with confidence. Jamis was beginning to have some misgivings however slight about the simplicity of her set target.

"Bree!" The black and gold creature replied joyful at the mention of food. He jumped up and snatched the backpack off his trainer. Backing up a few steps he shook it playfully. A smirk, if Umbreons could smirk, danced across his face and devilish glee in his crimson eyes.

"This is no time for games. You give me that back." The trainer scolded seriously, causing a momentary hesitation on the part of the Umbreon. It was just long enough for the young human to launch into a full tackle. His hand latched onto the bag and a tug-of-war ensued.

The fabric, unable to stand the strain, tore with a loud ripping noise. The two contestants each fell back with a half of the bag. There was a momentary silence by surprise then laughter. Human laughter.

Jamis swung her head around in surprise at the unexpected sound. Why was the human laughing? His Umbreon just tore his property. That would have earned her quite a beating from her current 'trainers'. How was it that the human was not distressed or even irritated? He thought it was funny!

"Umbreon, that's the third one this month. When are you going to start paying for them?" The boy laughed ruefully holding his half up in the air. Springing to his feet he dusted his rear and raced off. The Umbreon bounded up easily overtaking him. The two raced side by side down towards the nearest town and Jamis realized that she had to make her move before they reached town. There should be no witnesses, with the exception of the trainer if it couldn't be helped, to see what she was going to do. If they reached town then she would have to delay her mission until they left again for the open country. That could take days. Much too long for her to linger.

"Psst." Jamis hissed from the bushes. By that time the two had slowed down to a walk. The Umbreon cocked his long ears and stopped. His trainer noticed, but didn't stop. Jamis knew what he was thinking, 'My pokemon can handle himself. He probably detected a Sentret to chase. Let him have his fun.'

"What?" The Umbreon growled looking around undecided. His eyes were now blood red with caution rather than the crimson that they had been in play. A single white canine showed slightly beneath a tense lip and his ringed tail lashed like a cat. "Who are you?"

Jamis stepped out into the path first making sure that his trainer was over the rise and out of sight. She stared down pitiless at her doom target and replied in a cold, emotionless voice she always donned for such an occasion, "My name is of no concern. I was sent to fetch you."

Then she sprung at the smaller Dark pokemon unleashing a flurry of flames that encircled him. He fought back unleashing Agility hoping to blast through the fiery prison. Instead he was repelled by the sudden sheet of inferno that rose up to greet him. Snarling in hate rather than fear or panic, he deliberately raced into the fire. Jamis was forced to drop her attack at the risk of maiming him. A crippled pokemon was of no use to the lab. Erecting a wall of flames in front of him again she charged.

Her attack caught him off guard and she hit him mid body driving all the air out of his lungs. A yelp escaped his lips and he twisted back with searching teeth. A mischance allowed him to take hold and suddenly Jamis was the one would was taken by surprise.

She did a dance of pain trying to shake the little creature from her thick ruff. He clung on grimly unwilling to release his small measure of control. Tossing her head wildly Jamis swiftly executed a startling blow that sent the ringed opposer flying. He hit a near by tree trunk hard and screamed as something broke. Jamis could hear it as the snap echoed beneath the screams of unbearable pain. She scrambled forward hastily hoping to Recover the little beast before his trainer arrived. She hadn't meant to use so much force, which meant her pinned up rage was leaking again.

"Umbreon!"

The shout was distant. Evidently the trainer had thought no more of his pokemon's slight excursion walking on quite a distance. Now he was racing back to where he had hear his friend's scream of pain. The Umbreon himself was lying dazed at the foot of the tree. His leg was bent at an odd angle and his eyes were half closed and clouded.

Unwilling to be seen Jamis bounded off in the bushes and hid. She watched as the trainer rushed up to cradle his wounded partner.

"Umbreon, what happened?" The boy cried in dismay. He tore through the roughly fixed pack that they had dismantled not ten minutes ago searching. Finding what he sought he tore off the top accidentally breaking the spray. He gasped in shock and tossed the bottle to the roadside. Within a minute he had another in his hand. This time he was more careful. A thin white substance was sprayed on the unconscious pokemon.

The trainer cast around uselessly then resolved picking the hurt pokemon up, "I have to get Umbreon to a pokemon center."

Plucking a sphere off his belt he tossed it to the ground without the usual finesse trainers used. It was hasty and clumsy, but the job was done. A flash of white revealed a large dog pokemon. Jamis recognized it as an Arcanine. The big fire dog looked down concerned at his comrade and yipped agreement to whatever the trainer instructed. He bent down and allowed the boy to mount up. Springing forward they made for the nearest town.

Jamis turned in the opposite direction. She hadn't the heart to intercept them and her orders had been concise. No one was to see her except the pokemon she was kidnapping. She raced off to report her failure.

Chapter Eight

            Mirei snuggled into the worn blanket contentedly. The fox had said a rough apology, if only to please her it seemed, then stalked off like a disgruntled old man. He was hiding somewhere near she was sure and it made her feel safe surprisingly. Ever since Raj had launched that attack and the Vulpix revealed his hyped powers she had felt safer. As for the evolved Persian she remained with mixed feelings.

            One side of her adored everything about him. His talk, his walk. His casual air about the world. He had been exceedingly friendly, too friendly in Taz’s opinion, but she didn’t mind. He didn’t seem to push himself on her. Respect lay between them. Then there was the physical attraction. She was smart enough not to kid herself about there ever being another hybrid such as her self let alone a male. This Panthra was the closest there was to what she had become.

            Then there was that dark, paranoid part of her mind that heeded Taz’s active hate. There had to be a reason for it that she could not discern, that half argued forcibly. She was well aware that a game was being played around her. The unknowing was in the players. She suspected that the lab actually had nothing to do with it, or the people from the lab. They were the instigators acting under the influence of a persuasive power.

            She had pegged Taz as a helper to one of the sides, perhaps good, perhaps not. It would explain his mind power and youthful body. Raj she wasn’t sure. He might be with the other side, or just a noisy street cat. And there could be another angle she missed entirely. The pieces of this puzzle were scattered and fuzzy. Piecing what she had now had been something she’d worked on ever since her escape. Now that the pursuit was shaken she had more time to think on it.

            Suddenly she heard something. Rising quickly to her feet she looked for her odd companions. Raj was sleeping soundly a few yards away. His tail twitched irritably in his sleep as if his dream was being disagreeable. Taz was nowhere to be seen. It was quite possible he had decided to go off on one of his little forays. When she asked about them silence followed. Apparently his business was just that.

            Stalking nervously around the corner she came face to face with a petrified human. Immediately she recognized the woman as one of her pursuer. One of the living ones anyway. The blond was petrified with fear and it was obvious that she hadn’t expected to meet her prey so soon. Abruptly she fell to her knees and bawled out asking for mercy.

            “I didn’t want to do it! They commanded me, but after what you did to Blackie I knew it was pure folly. I hadn’t planned on you hanging around, I just thought this would go on some more! Then I wouldn’t even have to get near you.” The woman was in hysterics by now bringing both Raj and Taz out to the scene. Neither seemed very surprised to come upon this wailing human in the middle of an alley.

            Mirei backed up in confusion her crimson eyes flicking to them for support. She had no idea what this woman was babbling about. She didn’t want to do what? Capture Mirei? That made no sense since she was gung ho about it in the beginning.

            “She was sent to kill you babe. That’s what she is having a big hissy about.” Raj said dangerously. His claws flicked in and out of his pads and his whiskers were drawn back in anticipation. “Now I think it’s time to kill her.”

            Mirei jumped back as if she’d been bit. Whirling desperately she looked to Taz for help. He looked at the blubbering human considering with his keen eyes and his sharp black nose twitched.

            <She was sent to kill you, but I don’t think killing her will do much. Her sprit is broken already.> The fox remarked cocking his head gently and eyeing Raj out of the corner of his eye. A knowing was keen in his green eyes and a smirk slight on his narrow face.

            The black cat sail gracefully forward with his claws outstretched. The frightened woman let out a terrified bleat and stumbled back causing him to miss his mark by centimeters. Shaking himself lightly he advanced teasingly on his intended victim. She had back into a cold brick wall nullifying any chance she ever had of escape. Her five fingered hands were clasped together in silent pray and tears of regret streamed down her face.

            “Stop!” Mirei screeched when she realized that the fox had no intention of barring the big Persian.

            Hesitantly he turned to look over his shoulder at her. His emerald eyes were dark with killing lust, but a light of a question had crept over them. The jewel on his forehead winked in the dim light.

            “Don’t.” Mirei whispered unable to explain. The feline hissed in disappointment, but obediently left the biped unharmed for which she was profoundly grateful. Directing her attention to Raj who had come to stand at her side she purred, “Thank you.”

            Then to the woman, <What of my sister?>

            “She was sent on another assignment. Dealing with stealing some evolved pokemon. I don’t know much more than that.”

            Mirei nodded surprised to find the human being an accomplished psychic although the woman showed no implication of proving it. Perhaps she thought it wouldn't work on Mirei's Dark half. The big feline paused then cautioned, <Don’t return to the lab. They will punish you severely for your disobedience. It’s one thing to fail and another to commit treason.>

            “You think I don’t know that?” The woman spat bitterly then calmed briefly still looking slightly pained and lost, “I plan to go to Saffron City in Kanto and train under Sabrina. I thank you for my life. It will be a debt not easily forgot. Come to me if you ever need assistance of the human sort.>

            When the psychic had left Raj turned questioning, not to Mirei, but to Taz. His ears were back and his tail twitched.

            “Will you stop that?” The big feline asked with a snarl. He was referring to the looks he had been receiving ever since the incident began. The fox made no reply, but turned his probing gaze away. Then he was gone.

            “Thank you.” Mirei said again calling his attention away for the vanished canine.

            “Aw, well. Your wish is my command. If you felt her life was worth something then how could I deign you?” He scoffed in jest, however, his words were serious. Mirei had seen he way he looked at her. Not in lust, but love. He was tender and protective of her this whole time they had been together over the last month and she hadn’t seen why until now.

            Taz had and he had sprinted away to tell Mercedes of the dark cat’s doings.

            “You failed.”

            The two words fell like a heavy blow and Jamis flinched back. Her large ears had flattened leaving her forehead thrusting up bluntly revealing a angry glowing jewel. A snarl wrapped around her muzzle, but it was one of fear rather than hate. Hate was not expectable, not visible hate anyway.

            The scientist studied his fingernails unconcerned, confident that the shield around his office would protect him from any elemental attacks. He knew that the canine would not dare anything physical. It was too noisy. Any sounds of a scuffle would result in the guards outside bursting in and firing away. The hybrid was incredible, but hardly invincible. She would die just like any other pokemon. Writhing in pain if he had it his way.

            <I tried.> The purple creature retorted hotly. Her tails thrashed knocking into the walls and furniture of the small confines. A priceless vase jiggled then settled a breath away from the edge of the shelving.

            “Trying and succeeding are two different things. No matter. I have a new task for you.” With that he leaned forward his dark eyes glittering evilly in the dimly lit room. His Persian hissed and fled under the desk between his feet.

            Every pokemon felt the darkness that surrounded him when he was about to do something exceedingly evil or cruel. His darkness was unnatural and unbidden. It came and went like the summer's breeze with hurricane power. His Persian was his prized pet, but she knew enough to stay out of his way when the darkness crept upon him.

            <What?> Jamis growled sullenly suddenly feeling exposed. His piercing eyes looked her over considerately and a smirk curled across his olive colored skin.

            “No. That mission can wait.” The man snapped abruptly and the space around the small office returned to normal. His face softened slightly no longer made of cold marble. “There is something you need to do first. Complete your previous mission.”

            Jamis shrank back in confusion even more frightened by his abrupt mood swings. Which mission? The one with her sister or going after that trainer’s Umbreon? She waited suspenseful for clarification.

            “Mondo, bring in this hybrid’s new partner.” Giovanni snapped through the door. There was a brief scrambling then the door creaked opened hesitantly. A small blue creature was hastily shoved inside. The door slammed.

            “It bit me!” Was the painful howl as soon as the wooden door was secured. The man made some more whimpering noise until one of his comrades suggested the nurse. There was the pounding of feet down the hall followed by silence.

            Jamis inspected the new arrival with professional indifference. She noted immediately that the body was mostly that of a Vaporeon. Fringes of frosty feathers decorated the creature’s slender legs and the frill down the slim back. The most noticeable change were the two wings of ice blue emerging from the shoulders. Scared, hateful pools of maroon stared back at her.

            “This will be your new partner. She’s new to the game and this will be her first mission. You need to show her the ropes and keep her out of trouble.”

            <So you saddle me with a rookie? I THOUGHT you wanted this mission to be completed smoothly.> Jamis howled staring accusing at the cowering hybrid in the corner. Her slate gray eyes frosted over turning to ice and a snarl hovered on her lips.

            Her outburst was tastefully ignored, “Not only will you get the Umbreon, but you will also snatch another eeveelution. Gary Oak is returning home even as we speak. His grandfather is one of the greatest scientists of his day. There are bound to be some for you to capture.”

            “No!” The huddled creature in the corner yipped fearfully. She barked sounding strangely like an eagle cry and lashed out in a rage. Her sharp talons torn the wood and carpet then rake furrows in the wall. “I won’t! Not torture for some other poor pokemon minding their own business with their loving trainer! You can’t make me!”

            “Can and will.” Was the cold reply. That seemed to take the fight out of the Vaporeon and she slumped down fretfully. The man turned competently to Jamis and uttered on word, “Out.”

            Jamis took the smaller hybrid by the scruff and managed to get out the door before dropping her burden. The blue marine creature sobbed hunched inward ignoring all around her. One of the human guards ventured to close and Jamis growled warningly. He stopped then returned to his post.

            <Come on.> Jamis hissed losing her patience. She prodded the sobbing mass and received a snap for her trouble. She tried a different track, <It’s not the end of the world you know. It will happen whether or not you help.>

            “It’s foul.”

            <Life’s foul. Get use to it. You’ll be sent on many more missions after this. Not all will be this pretty.> There was no comfort in her reply only harsh reality. The Arcanine was growing tired of sugar coating things. Life was hard and choice less. The sooner the little one before her learned that the better off she’d be.

            “No.” That came out sounding like a sulking child and Jamis was tempted to treat her like one. A good swat wouldn’t go amiss in this case.

            <Walk or I’ll carry you brat.> Jamis snapped giving her a mental prod. The pokemon leapt up with a start and glared. Suddenly she found herself floating a few feet above the ground. Scrambling she tried to put her dainty paws back on the ornate carpeting.

            “Jamis?”

            Jamis lost her concentration and the Vaporeon thumped to the ground painfully on the thinly carpeted floors. Tears welled up in her maroon eyes, but not cry emitted from her tightly closed mouth.

            <Paige?> The violet hybrid replied shocked. The little Eevee had changed much since they had last seen each other. Instead of being dusky the creature before her was a splendid blue of the prettiest hue. Taking a closer look she realized the wings were larger than they appeared and strong. The fellow pokemon’s condition, however, was appalling. She was underfed and listless with exhaustion. Her powder soft scales were torn and dirty while her feathers were tattered. A haunted look covered the hybrid’s large eyes that had been there, festering for a while.

            “It’s Aqua now. They decided to change my name to something more fitting.” A wry sneer covered her thin face and dry amusement shone in her eyes. “They finally decided I was to do something useful. I’ve done nothing but grieve since they evolved me. How can you bear it?”

            <Bear what?> Jamis asked startled. Evolution had never been a big issue with her. As she had grown use to her new body she had liked it even more. The power, the sheer size she acquired were the main benefits. Her mind had changed little as far as she could see.

            “You know what I speak of. It didn’t bother you, did it?” Aqua peered closely at her face and nodded. She pulled a face and remarked pained, “It did a number on me. I felt so… so different. Changed.”

            <Times change. Things never stand still for a moment.> Jamis remarked wisely feeling troubled.

            “True.”

            After that they fell silent each with her thoughts. Jamis led the way out of the building having gained some insight. She was more at ease now that she once again had a sister to be with. Aqua had never been close, she had never had the chance, but they were sisters none the less.

Chapter Nine

            <You have a reason for visiting unannounced and uninvited.> The voice tinkled slightly amused and slightly scolding. The fox shivered unintentionally feeling more than one great presence. Mercedes had a companion with her. He assumed it was the Keeper of Time, however, it may just as well be the Clone.

            Mewtwo scared him badly although he wouldn't admit it and he felt far more comfortable with Celebi. In fact, out of all his Lady's companions the little green fairy was the least intimidation with the most power. Yet he reminded the Vulpix of someone a little intoxicated mixed with their wits cloudy. He was prone to say odd things and singing from time to time. It was difficult to believe that he was the grand master of all things that were, are, and will be.

            "And I, Cirus, the Keeper of Time!" The slurred voice announced grandly his greatness only taken away by the stumbling of the name. Cirus was obviously his chosen name for the time being and he was not quite use to it yet.

            <Hush.> Mercedes chided gently then misted in to hover above the fox. She looked down the eyes like the mildest of seas and sighed. He had been her loyal follower, she could not have asked for better, yet the time had come. No, not the time, but the situation.

            "You dare tell me to hush, woman." Cirus growled in a mock tone and then giggled amused at his impression of the Clone. Floating he looked down at the fire fox and lightly tugged on an outstretched tail. The affect was immediate.

            Taz yelped as his tails were attacked. Gazing upward in disgust he tucked them underneath and out of harms way for the time being. Growling to himself mentally he composed what he planned to say. It didn't quite come out as well as he had hoped, <That cat, the one I thought was with the enemy, well there is a complication. He, er, he loves Mirei. Enough so to be put off his prey. I suspect he is Rajah.>

            "Rajah?" Cirus yelped jolted. He dropped Mercedes' pink tail in a hurry and glared down menacingly, or rather as menacing as he could get being a fairy and all. The result was comical and Mercedes giggled softly at the absurdity of it. <Don't laugh! That kitten stole my hourglass. He took it! Imagine what would have happened if he knew how to use it.>

            <Pfft, that was years ago. When will you get over it? It was your own fault.>

            "It was not my fault!" Cirus shrieked shrilly suddenly disappearing with a poof of pale green smoke. Mercedes' amusement was abruptly quenched and she growled most unladylike. Celebi was finally gone and the fox would never question his Mistress' actions.

            <Are you positive?>

            Taz shifted and ventured cautiously sorely tempted to pay her back for bringing Cirus, <Not sure, I already said that. It's a guess. And he does love her. I have been around long enough to see the signs.>

            Mercedes grumbled to herself then turned looking thoughtful and distant, <Do as you have been doing. I was going to pull you from this mission, however, I believe your services of watchfulness are still required.>

            With that she melted into the surrounding forest leaving a very distressed fox in her wake. He snarled to himself wondering why she was going to pull him out. The danger was clearly not passed and there was none better to do what he had to. Well, at least she took things seriously for once.

            "Up and at them!" Raj bellowed scaring the daylights out of both of his sleeping companions. They jerked up at the abrupt ear drum shattering noise. Seeing only him Mirei promptly plopped back down with half slit eyes clouded with sleepiness. Taz glared ungratefully, but roused himself looking tired from his night's excursion to where ever. Those excursions made Raj nervous. He was aware that the little fox suspected him and also that Taz was a 'helper' to the other side as unlikely as it seemed.

            Seeing his bellowing to have no effect he pattered over to a rain puddle. Lifting his paw he jabbed it down as if he was going after a fish then slammed a pawful of water in the other direction. It splashed both Mirei and Taz making the fox jump back with a yelp at the cold water hit him.

            "Why'd you do that?" Mirei asked still slightly sleepy and fuming. She glared unhappily looking for signs of laughter in his face and found none.

            "We need to go. I have another haunt not too far from here that we can use. This place is getting old and dangerous. If that woman found us so easily then others will surely follow." He did not add that the 'others' may be from his side of the Powers or that he was a traitor to them. He could see that the fox guessed at it, but innocent little Mirei was completely clueless. That made it even more urgent.

            He had come here with the intent to hinder his intended target and failing that kill. Now that things had gone so badly awry he was sure the order would change to fatality. One thing not factored in was the fact that he could, and did, fall in love. Soldiers of the Dark did not worry about such things for it was unheard of. He was a disgrace and an outcast soon to be hunted like hands of the Light. Yet he could not help feeling the way he did and there was no way to change it.

            <I agree.> The fox broke into his thoughts knocking him off track. He gave a fuzzy, confused look to the red kit which prompted Taz, <That we should move.>

            "Wait a minute here." Mirei said in a blaze of stubbornness. She stomped her foot down in a business like fashion and growled. "Who even said I wanted to move? I happen to like it here."

            <WE don't care.> Taz replied flippantly earning him a ill tempered glare and a half heart swat. Ducking back he sighed at her stubbornness.

            Raj flicked his tail silently debating what to do. Whirling he started off down the alley not looking back. He held his curled tail high in the air and his ears pricked forward to show resolve and confidence. He would never leave, but she didn't know that.

            Taz, catching on to his game, rushed to catch up. His tails were bouncing madly and his light pink tongue lolled gently. He settled into a trot at the feline's side never once darting a glance over his shoulder.

            "Wait!" Mirei cried picking up on their intent. She raced forward overtaking them easily and falling in place at the other side of Taz. The little fire fox scooted over and under Raj so that he was on the other side and not impending their closeness.

            <Now that's more like it.> Taz chirped privately to the Dark feline. There was a friendliness in his tone that had never been heard before. It was obvious by them banding together that the tide of opinion had turned.

            Turning the corner disaster struck. A large Arcanine bounded out of a side alley confronting them. His coal eyes flicked between Taz and Raj. Standing tall, taller than all the rest and heavier too, he stared down.

            "Vul… I mean Taz?" The big fire canine growled blushing at his error. He was obviously young and unskilled. Stuttering nervously he looked at Raj once again. "I am Ace, your old friend. May I join your little group?"

            The speech sounded rehearsed and the Vulpix stifled a snicker raising an eyebrow. He blinked up with his green eyes and smiled. <Well met young friend. I did not recognize you at first because of your evolution. Forgive my rudeness. How goes it with Mercedes?>

            The furry pokemon sagged with relief at the mention of Mew, for her name was the password and he didn't want to mess up. He was honored and proud to have been chosen for such a important mission as this. Eager with youth and inexperience he had raced off not fully realizing what he was jumping into. But the irrepressible youth didn't care. What had been deemed enough for him was within his abilities he was sure.

            "Well thank you. I suppose I do look changed." Ace replied politely continuing the masquerade roughly.

            The two felines looked on. Raj was nervous. This young pup was obviously back up for the wily old fox which outnumbered him two to one. He didn't like the speculative look he was receiving from the big dog. Mirei was still annoyed from her wake up call and that annoyance carried over to the canine. She could care less if he joined them even if he was dull.

            "Fall in then." She snapped cutting things short, "You know Taz, that much is clear. You guys can chat as we walk. My name is Mirei and that's Raj. Your Ace. All the basics covered now? Good."

            With that she walked stiff legged down the street having no idea where she was going. Raj gave a brief, charming smile and padded after her. Luckily there were many ways to get to his hide out although this was not his intended route.

            "Is she always like that?" Ace's voice dropped to a whisper of awe.

He, for all his stature, seemed ridiculously young and naïve. Well that would change given time, the fox reflected. He gave a half smile and replied, <Only when she's grumpy.>

The little Vulpix thought it ironic that he was grown adult in the body of a cub, for he couldn't evolve ere go his powers, and the Arcanine was just the opposite. They would make quite a team, for that's what he suspected Mew meant to happen.

~~~~~
            Aqua fidgeted impatiently ruffling her wings. Her quick maroon eyes flickered over the scene below with disgust. Gary, and assumedly his sister, were speaking to their grandfather over tea. It seemed that Oak had quite a bit to say, his mouth constantly moving, while the other two simply listened (or pretended to). A lovely purple Espeon sat outside in the sunshine tending her brother. The Umbreon was still not at full health and he would most likely limp for the rest of his life. He was laying quietly, soaking up the rays and resting in the refreshing breeze. It was too good to spoil.
            Jamis was similarly surveying the scene, but with far different thoughts. She was wondering if the humans would stay inside long enough for her job to be completed or if the two eeveelutions would remain enjoying the air for the time being. There were too many ifs and risks involved. Jamis didn't like it, not one bit. Giovanni had cleared any methods necessary for the capture of the two, which was most unlike him. The dark aura had covered him at the time for normally he was a cautious man.
            <We may as well go.> Jamis thought-whispered willing herself up and forward. She slid silently through the edge of the woods and out into the open. Slinking low she stopped and looked over her shoulder impatiently.
            Aqua was still standing where she had been left looking lost and slightly defiant. Her frills were up and her eyes pleaded. She couldn't quite decided if she should be weak or dominant. Neither would work of course for Jamis was set on her goal.
            "Why?"
            <Because.> Jamis answered shortly heaving an exasperated sigh. She flicked her tail slightly and growled under her breath. Cocking an ear she could tell the that two eeveelutions had not stirred, yet.
            Deliberately she continued in a straight line at her targets. Taking down both would be difficult even with the handicap Jamis had given the Umbreon. The Oaks were renowned trainers and even a pet such as the Espeon was at a high level. Still, if Aqua refused to cooperate it could be done.
            A rustle in the grass behind her alerted her of her partner. Sighing again she sped up until she was hiding among the flowers decorating the lane. Just yards away were her targets still blissfully unaware of her presence. The Umbreon had nodded off and the Espeon's head was dipping down lazily.
Feeling the Vaporeon behind her she sprang forward in deadly silence. Snatching the Espeon by her delicate neck Jamis stood undecided. The cat- like violet pokemon sprang into action biting and thrashing. She squalled in rage and her blue eyes raged like boiling water. Her brother was faring slightly better with the timid Aqua. He had cornered her against a fence posted. She was spitting mad and shards of ice were flying every which way keeping the Dark trainer pet at bay. Finally deciding to get down to business she sprayed water everywhere creating a sopping wet opponent. Jamis groaned, but then she blew out Icy Wind. Her aggressor was now coated with a thin layer of ice. Just enough to make it so he couldn't move well.
            <Here, throw the ball.> Jamis urged. The ball was specially made to capture already owned pokemon. And it was very strong. Strong enough to hold a raging Espeon and definitely strong enough to hold a frozen Umbreon.
            Aqua hesitated and looked the Umbreon in the eyes. His crimson eyes twinkled back with unshed tears. He knew he had fought the good fight, but this was the end. She gulped feeling the pressure of what her sister needed her to do and what the Master wanted her to do. Pushing back were her own feelings and morals. Defeated by herself she tossed the ball down on the grass and tucked her head under a wing refusing to do anything more.
<Son of a!> Jamis cried not remembering the last time she had been so wroth. Tossing her mouthful down hard she stunned the tiny Psychic. Plucking her own ball from the thong around her massive neck she flipped it hitting the Umbreon in the forehead. He was immediately sucked in and with three shakes caught.
            Rushing in huge strides she stepped back enough to launch a massive Fire Spin. The red- gold flames spun in a hungry circle like a cyclone ready to destroy. She bounded through them easily and stalked her victim. The Espeon had recovered her wits and mobility now fighting mad. She bared her tiny white teeth in a snarl of defiance and her fur bristled down to the tip of her furthest tail. She took little notice of the heat or the little sparks singeing her soft lilac fur.
            <So you wished to battle.> She snarled heavily sounding more like a Mewtwo than anything else. Her shoulder blades were tensed ready to go forward at the slightest provocation. Her blood red jewel gleamed wildly in the smoke and her narrowed eyes sparkled with battle lust. <You should have asked!>
            With that she powered forward knocking the bigger dog back into the inferno that surrounded them. Lashing out with a metal weighted tail she caught the hybrid across the chin with astounding force. Not pausing to gain her baring or balance she followed through with a vicious Bite. Not stopping to rest or breath she pressed her attack with a wild fury born of desperation and rage.
            By this time Jamis' temper had cooled off and her rage was securely under control again. She was thankful that no one was severely hurt when she went to it. Letting the smaller creature take the offense she considered her next move. Blows rained down and suddenly she whipped upwards. Her jaws wrapped around the Espeon's middle and pressed just enough to hurt.
            <You listen. This could go easy or hard, your choosing. Either way you will lose.>
            <You drive such a hard bargain.> The female sneered bitterly her voice overflowing with sarcasm. She pushed forward trying the sink her claws into flesh, <I'll chose… HARD!>
            She broke away and panted livid. Salvia coated her tongue and lips and burn marks her coat. Jamis decided to end it. She had wasted far too much time already. Gathering up her fire power she launched a massive Flamethrower almost fainting the Psychic where she stood.
            Scooping up the ball that Aqua had tossed down she smacked it square into the Espeon's back. There was a brief struggled and looked as if the courageous creature was going to get out, but then it fell still.
            Jamis, hearing the humans screaming on the porch, raced forward hastily. She hooked her ball containing the Umbreon in it's holder by the magnetic field. Then she picked up the limp Vaporeon hybrid connecting the Espeon to her thong. Bursting out of the flames, she ran as she had never done before to skid out of sight unhurt and not caught.
            Placing her burden gently on the ground she crept back in sight to see what was being done. Fire trucks had already come wailing over the ridge. Berating herself Jamis let the fire die. She had been so tense that she had forgotten to put it out. Oak was holding back his young granddaughter and Gary was already pawing through the rumble with a fever. Not finding his friend and long time companion he turned silent and dry eyed. Words were spoken, but over the noise Jamis could not hear them. Evidently he had claimed something outrages for Oak's expression was forbidding and his sister was pleading. It had the feel of vengeance about it and the young trainer wouldn't have to go far.
            Feeling lower than she had ever been before she padded off to where she had left Aqua. The marine pokemon still refused to budge so the big dog was forced to carry her. The pokeball around her neck weighed heavier by far, however, and she wondered if she would ever be free of the guilt that plagued her with nightmares.
Chapter Ten
            The black panther slunk silently out of the alley giving one look back at the sleeping forms that were spread out around the shelter. The Arcanine was whimpering in his sleep fitfully and his paws twitched in some dream. The Vulpix was a much quieter sleeper. He hadn't gone out as much lately, not since Ace joined them, and that only served to strengthen the cat's resolve. Now was the time, now. Lastly, his emerald gaze fell upon Mirei. Her legs were folded beneath her and her tail tucked tightly around them in a true cat fashion.
            Turning he pushed on until he reached the meeting place. Standing silent and grim he waited. It was a long wait of remorse and sadness hanging in the air. Not all of it his. There was also evil and lust about. No happiness or joy surrounded this place of darkness unless it was that of fiendish pleasure.
            "So you finally show, Rajah Panthra. We were beginning to have our doubts about your loyalty." A cold, emotionless voice boomed out like a winter's sky. With a rush of frigid wind the speaker landed gracefully.
            The creature was so shockingly close to that of the Light's Articuno. Both were birds of the ice element. Instead if a pure, crystal complexion, this hawk had a dark navy one. So dark that it looked to be of the moon less night. Tiny pinpoints of yellow glittered coldly and patches of gray drifted along the wings and down the tail. Twin sharp pools of black sparkled with a frozen manner and a beak of crimson hooked cruelly at the end.
            "I have always been loyal." Rajah said bowing his head and choosing his words carefully. Anticuno was finicky and easily dealt out punishment to those she thought were insolent. Being of the rare element, unknown to humans, Wind, and that of Ice she was extremely powerful.
            "So you have." A second, deeper voice added keenly. The speaker was pitch back with powerful looking shoulders and a strong, whip-like tail. His blunt muzzle and cupped ears were held high with a sort of harsh pride. His silvery mane flowed down his chest and under his belly. A silver tufted barb decorated his tail and blood red eyes were watchful.
            Rajah nodded respectfully and kept his face blank. It would do no good if the lion could see into his eyes, see the plans that lurked there, the emotions. He would be read like a large print book and put to rest before the day was done.
            The last three of the Dark powered legendaries arrived. One was in the form of a serpent, but wonderfully jeweled with deep amethyst gems and topaz garnets. He was the legendary of the Poison. Distant and cruel, but dull along the edges. Then there was the Bug. The Scorpion's armored hide was a striking orange and shiny. At the end of his beaded tail a stinger posed dramatically and deadly. Hiding in the shadows the fifth member lurked in complete silence. Her almost human eyes were lidded slowing no emotion, nothing but an empty void. The rest of her remained unseen. Raj knew her to be of the Ghost type, but he had never set eyes on her before and never expected to. She was far to cunning for her own good.
            These were the forgotten. Legendaries of the unfavorable types. Humans knew not of their existence and they wished to obliterate the whole race. A war of sorts was being fought. The Dark in favor of annihilation and the Light in favor of salvation. All the legendaries were one at one point, but that was before the war. Now they were sworn enemies and the sides had been chosen.
            "You wisssh to report?" Slith hissed drawing closer. His jeweled hide sparkled in the dim light and his baleful eyes looked down. He was dull, but not entirely stupid.
            The cat just realized what he had gotten himself into. Backing out was not an option so he bluffed. Being so close to them, just seeing them, had turned his mind to their will. He was fighting, and losing.
            "What else?" Rajah jabbed stopping himself from adding nincompoop. That was such a pitiful insult and it would more than like be taken the complete wrong way. He received a warning glance from Leo.
            "Well then do it you little brat. We don't have time to play games with cubs." Mist the Anticuno cried in annoyance and she flapped her wings slightly creating a icy gust of wing. It whirled and ripped around the other five before dying down.
            "Well, I have her trust." That came out reluctantly and he forced himself on trying to sound pleased about it, "She'll follow me just about anywhere now, but there's a problem. Mew has sent her a guardian. A sly little fox. And just this morning a big Arcanine joined us. He knows the fox."
            "Vulpine." Sha'lace the ghost hissed softly hate tingling in her breath. She winked out and appeared abruptly.
            "Exactly." Rajah confirmed not really knowing if Taz really was or not. The fox might as well be if Mew sent him on this mission.
            The five legendaries pondered this piece of information for a long moment. Obviously they had thought that Mew would not know of their plans or guess at them. Clear sailing was predicted and now a rock was looming near ready to upset the boat. A brief conference was then held and they turned back to him.
            "Kill her. And Vulpine if you can manage it." Sha'lace said simply.
            Shock flooded through the Dark cat's body and he looked pleadingly around. The verdict was the same. Death. She had become a risk in the plan and if they couldn't have her then no one could.
            "No! By Mew and all things holy, we can still win!" Raj spat losing control of his temper through fear and disgust. He snarled and crouched.
            Mist whirled up and seemed to grown tremendous in size and power. Cold radiated from her and the sky clouded over making things black with rage. Her bright, cruel eyes flamed with inner passion and her wings tore through the air with vengeance. Her long tail lashed with stinging aim and her claws hooked then unhooked convulsively. All grew quiet with fear or nervousness.
            "You, kitten, have severely got on my nerves! Never, never, mention Her name in swearing so long as you shall live! It is blasphemy and intolerable, for if you love Her so much switch sides like a turncoat. I'm sure that She and her friends will welcome you with open arms. Especially the Time Keeper. He may just hug you a bit to hard and then, oh well." Mystical foamed glaring down with death in her eyes. "You will do as you are told and nothing more! We are your masters, we rule you!"
            "I'm sure the boy didn't mean that." Leo soothed when she returned to earth her energy spent, but not her energy. His tail was twitching in the manner of an angry cat though and his eyes involuntarily sought to berate the young cat.
            Rajah just cowered fearfully unable to speak.
~~~~~

            "Where's Raj?" Mirei asked Taz as he moseyed by. The silent fox shrugged and continued on.

            "Raj? Raj!"

            Not finding him she circled outward calling his name. Ace followed indiscreetly at a fair distance almost like a guard. In fact, she had a hunch that's what he was. If not a guard then a baby-sitter. None of the males trusted her to survive a walk around the block alone. They treated her like a silly cub just out of the den rather than a mature hybrid who had escaped from hell.

            "Got ya." A voice hissed in her ear as a mesh net fell over her. She thrashed around tearing wildly with her claws and unleashing Dark waves to no avail. The net was immune to her attacks built to hold anything that was up into it.

            "What the hell?" The voice shrieked as Ace bounded up unleashing a siring Flamethrower at the man. He put up his arms to shield himself from the flames and heat causing the skin to crinkle and distort. His face was a twisted mask of excruciating pain. He dropped the ends of the net and turned his attention on the bewildered Arcanine, which was surprised that he was even on his feet after the assault.

            Then it was Ace who was shrieking. The two combatants moved out of Mirei's limited sight, but she could hear the blows and then the defeated whine of Ace. The man had blood all over his hands when he returned and his face was covered with blaring blisters filling with pus. He hauled the net up with inhuman strength and dragged Mirei along the sidewalk. He was slightly bowlegged making the journey a very bumpy and uneven on before she was flung in the back of a black van. No other color or design marked the surface and it was standard, so much so that it wouldn't attract the notice of the passer by.

            The door slammed leaving the frightened hybrid in the dark. Her breath was short and clipped with fear and she forced her muscles still. Thrashing around like a beached Magikarp would do nothing to aid her. In fact, it would more than likely tangle her up even more. She lay still hoping that she would be found, rescued. Her friends would surely find out what happened to her, they would come. Except that Ace may never even get up and Raj had disappeared.

            The darkness was stifling and the enclosed van stank of fear and old food. Experimentally she pushed the net gently with a foot. Immediately it tightened and cut into think fur. Resigned she lay back trying not to move yet to get comfortable. Eventually she forgot her body and her mind sunk into the past.

            "Why didn't you tell me there were others? We should find them! They're our sisters." Mirei shouted harshly not caring who heard or saw. The two sisters were standing in the training course waiting for the signal to begin, but it seemed the humans running the simulation were far to busy watching them.

            <I only met one other. What go would it do to go to all the trouble of finding them? We have each other!> Jamis shot back defending herself. Her furry tail lashed with fury at the accusations and she took a step forward.

            "There are others! Even one more means that there is a sister out there who we don't know."

            <So? Paige seemed happy enough when I met her. They don't need us mucking up our lives. And we shouldn't muddy our own. Why are you blaming me? I thought I was doing the right thing here!>

            Then the unthinkable had happened. Mirei flew forward at her sister in an unprovoked rage. Her needle claws tore and ripped for a good moment before the dog hybrid found the wits to defend herself. She had always been the better fighter and Mirei better with her element. Mirei was so good that she could use the mirror of psychic powers with her own Dark. That meant mind reading, telekinesis, and mind to mind speech.

            Now they were at ends neither having the advantage and both ready to do some serious damage to the other. If the scientists hadn't gathered their wits and broke the two apart there would have been worse that split noses and sore tails. But still, there had been a gap made, or widened actually. Hard feelings were much harder to mend than puncture wounds. Skin grew back leaving fur covered scars, but memories remain in the open mind.

            Mirei came to wondering why she was thinking of her sister at all. She hadn't even given a passing thought to the lavender hybrid since the woman Brook had made a brief appearance. There was something in her mind that just wouldn't leave her alone.

            She sensed that Jamis was with another like them. She wasn't sure which since she had met none of the other four, only knew of them. There was something heavy on her sister's mind which in turn was lingering in Mirei's. If only she knew what.

~~~~~
            Jamis hissed with a intake of breath and restrained herself from snapping at the frightened medic. The Espeon female had put a long gash right down her side and there were Bite marks where the fangs had penetrated her thick ruff covering her cheeks and neck. The medicine was applied again and she growled at the stinging pain.
            Pleading her case with Aqua hadn't gone as well as she had hoped. Giovanni was firmly set upon putting the marine hybrid in with the new arrivals as a punishment. There was little hopes that the two enraged and maddened creatures would not tear her to pieces at first meeting. To make matters worse she was to be teamed up with two brothers newly spliced. That meant that they had little control over their powers and a friggin' attitude to boot. Things like that she just didn't want to deal with.
            Shaking the medic off she jumped off the steel table careful not to inhale the stinging air filled with sharp chemicals then strode out the door. The sooner she met her new lackeys the sooner she could put them in their place in the scheme of things. She deemed herself a harsh teacher, but an effective one. It was hard being so experienced that she had to show, forcibly sometimes, others just how bad things were and what to do.
            Ignoring the bright florescent lighting and the shiny tile floor she hurried down the hall to the predestined place. Pushing open the steel door with her shoulder she stared in looking for any humans to give her orders. What exactly was she suppose to do with the two newbies?
            Instead two pairs of eyes stared back at her. Both the mirror image of hatred one black and the other a deep maroon. Wings grew from the shoulder blades and feathers from limbs. The first of the pair was a Jolteon crossed with a Zapdos. His spikes were sharp, barbaric with black tips on them. Feathers jutted out from his elbows and hind legs and also on the sides of his face. His ears were shorter, almost like a bird's crest and his muzzle elongated. The second was a Flareon crossed with a Moltres. He was smaller, but just as lithe and athletic with fiery feathers floating around him and neon fur covering his body. Other than the coloration his blend was much blander than the others. He simply looked like the fire evolution of Eevee with wings.
            <Don't! even think about it.> She barked in their heads stopping them in their tracks and murderous intents. Still, their bodies quivered with eagerness and suppressed tension. All of it bent on killing her, the scientist's pet. What they didn't know was that she was just as much a slave as they if not more. She was THE slave. THE one most trusted to complete her missions, THE one who was forced to hunt her own sister.
            "Who are you?" Spat the Flareon. He seemed younger than the other although time in the laboratory had worn away many years from his youth. Both were younger than she was, but somehow they seemed almost as old.
            <Your new teacher.> She replied blandly hinting at neither annoyance or hate, but neither at joy or happiness. Her face remained smooth and her body still.
            "What if we don't want one?" He persisted while the other remained silent. It seemed that he was the mouth of the two. A big one at that.
            <Too bad.>
            "Well…" The Flareon shot back, but was cut off.
            "So be it. What do you have to teach us, teacher?" The Jolteon broke in. His voice was hard, but mild and his eyes equally blank as Jamis' were. He sat down and stared. Well, she could deal with that. Staring was much better than attacking any day.
            <I don't know.> She replied slightly sheepish cursing the humans for putting her in this position in the first place. Maybe they had hoped the two would actually kill her.
            "Then we wait until you do know." He said with uncanny ease.
            <Do you have names?> Jamis asked to ease the silence and her aching head. Hopefully so stupid, polite conversation would clear it.
            "My name…" The Flareon brother began huffily as if she should already know he was so important. He was cut off by his brother by the means of a sharp elbowing in the side. Gasping he shot his brother a deadly look tinged with surprise.
            "Is of no consequence. From today forth we shall have new names. Mine will be Blitz."
            The younger brother scrammed mentally to think up a name and follow suit. It seemed that he was content to let his brother make the decisions. That was the way Mirei had been. Jamis was the calmer, smarter one so she was the one to lead.
            "Um… Loki. Mine shall be Loki."
            <Well, mine is Jamis.> Did they have to change their names just because they evolved? The Arcanine hybrid just couldn't understand that. They were still the same inside even if the outside had changed. So what if they looked different? Did none of them consider the power and sheer physical traits that went with the evolution?
            The door creaked open nervously and a young scientist bolted in to tremble in the corner. An older one followed with undeniable leisure before setting her stuff down on the table. She glared at her frightened assistant and he reluctantly drew forward. Obviously he was more afraid of her than he was of the three hybrids.
            "Jamis." The woman nodded a greeting. Her name was Sara or Dr. Cunningham to her unders. Jamis knew her from way back and there was respect laying between them. Respect and a sort of badly made trust.
            <Sara.>
            "As you know, Giovanni," She never called him 'the Boss' as the others did, "Has assigned you to these two. The reason is that they are uncontrollable by humans. The hopes are that you can manage to bring them around to our standards. Enough so that they will be deployed on missions and expected to carry them out."
            <I did a fine job with Aqua.> Jamis grumbled and received a sharp look.
            "That, you thoughtless dog, was a form a punishment for you failing the first time. It is amazing that you still managed to steal the Oaks' pokemon and bring your partner back in one piece."
            <So she could be torn into pieces.> Jamis mumbled bitterly and luckily no one heard her.
            "Let's begin then if nothing nice can be said." Sara continued blithely.
Chapter Eleven
            "He most certainly meant that." Sha'lace whispered unconcerned by Mist's wrathful storm. Her gray eyes were unwavering like her voice and she hovered around making the rest of them uneasy.
            Leo twitched his tail again and sighed. His son had always been unruly. There had been a time when he was just a youngster that he had stolen Celeborn's hourglass. He had no idea what it did (luckily), but that annoyed the other legendary to death that it had been stolen right under his nose.
Legendaries were not even suppose to have offspring for fear of mixed parentage. But then Lacy had always been different. Leo had fallen in love with the cream colored Persian and had remained faithfully by her side until she had passed on. Once she was gone he took in his half grown son treating him just as another legendary. The others accepted his choice except the Clone.
Mewtwo, or Menth as he was called, had adamantly objected to the cub's presence. His constant railing and disapproval had forced Leo to leave the circle. The others had left long before for various reasons, some similar, but most for twisted reasons of greed. Sha'lace was not even known of until she wandered into a meeting one evening among the Dark. For wandering seemed to be what she did until she found something interesting. Then you couldn't get rid of her.
            "Perhapsss he'd bessst ssstay here until thisss isss all through." Slith suggested keeping one jeweled eye on the young member of their group. His tongue flicked in and out tasting the cat's feelings. For sensing others feelings, no matter how well hidden, was his specialty.
            "Aw, let him have his fun." Sting broke in. The scorpion was a good buddy of Rajah because the two were so much alike. Or used to be.
            "Yes, he has to kill her. It's his job, not ours." Mist growled still angry at his blasphemy. Her vengeful eyes fell down from her air perch and her wings beat powerfully to stay above.
            All eyes focused on the black creature cowering in the mist of them. None had really been paying attention to him and now the spotlight had been returned. His emerald eyes were fearful, but they did not lower to the ground in shame or defeat.
            "Very well. I shall be commanded."
            A chorus of 'ayes' followed in approval to the notion, but the eyes never left. Each had some bit of doubt or emotion holding them back from trust. Then again none of them truly trusted any of the others. That was a sure way to lose.
            "Well?" The Anticuno snapped at the rooted cat. She blasted out a cold wind. It was just enough to get him going. Within an instant there were only the five left in the meeting place. Then there were none.
~~~~~

            "Ow." Mirei cried as she was hauled ungraciously out of the back of the van. The man had help now that they had reached the destination and they were not gentle in their unloading. Her paws were numb with the lack of activity and her stomach rumbled non to gently requesting substance.

            "'Nuff of that you. Now don't be a squiggling like an eel. Then we's have to hurt you." One of the men commanded sharply giving her a sharp slap. It fell harmlessly on her flanks rather than her head.

            From then on she was still as possible. The jostling lasted only a little longer, but she could hear heavy tread on tile and it made her shiver deeply. She knew where she was. The laboratory. They had caught her and returned her. She would never see Raj, Taz, or anyone else ever again. Her physical body was strong with Dark energy, but she was worried about the mental. That's how her punishment would be geared, she was sure of it.

            She was then dumped on a plush carpet. The nets were untangled from her limbs gently and the two new humans who had done that backed away respectfully. Pillows were strewn around the room and the two pieces of furniture were a computer desk with swivel chair and a large bookcase packed with classics.

            At the desk was a young man in his mid-twenties. His hair was neat and a dark brown while his eyes were a piercing black. A smile curved around his lips revealing near perfect teeth and there was a smug air of satisfaction all around his person.

            "I trust you are unhurt?" He began in a pleasant baritone his eyes shifting threatening to the thugs who had brought her in. They shuffled nervously and kept their heads low. "You were not meant to be brought in such a fashion for I mean to be a friend."

            He gave a curt dismissal and all but the two newest human servants fled. The two put a bowl of water and some food down then retreated back to ready for the next time they were called. Both were uncharacteristically silent and their eyes were blank. Almost like a void.

            "You do not trust me yet. Very well. It would be very stupid of you to do so just as we are introduced, however, I hope you will change your mind on the matter. I have brought you here to keep you safe from the forces that want you to use for their own ends. It is the legendaries that are warring and you are a pawn both would love to have. That Vulpix you keep company with as well as the Arcanine are on one side. Servants if you will. The cat is one the other although I am not positive of his rank."

            Mirei stayed still and silent absorbing it all in. On one level she was shocked to find that her friends had betrayed her and that she was nothing but an object to them. On the other she was amazed that she was so important. Then there was the part that shouted out not to trust the man, that he could be lying though his square human teeth. Hushing these cautions and voices she stared listening to what was said.

            "They would use you, just as you had been used at the laboratory. As your sister still is. Until this is over I wish for you to remain here."

            <How long will this take?> She questioned warily not relaxed at all. He knew so much. About her, about her sister. Even things about her companions that they had not bothered to tell her. Not let her decide about. It would certainly explain why Taz and Raj were at ends in the beginning, but not why they got along now.

            "It is a war. There is no set ending." He replied smoothly as if she was slow and needed things spelled out. "I just want to keep you safe."

            Safe my tail Mirei thought wondering why he insisted on her being 'safe' in his possession.

            <What of my sister?>

            The switch of topic hardly fazed him at all, "She is alive if that is what you ask. Well for the most part. Her life has been cluttered lately."

            Mirei wasn't sure what 'cluttered' was suppose to mean.

            <My friends? When I was invited,> She said that word mockingly yet he didn't seem to mind overly, <One of them was hurt.>

            "Do you really wish to waste our time on such frivolous questions? They betrayed you."

            <What happened to them?> Mirei pressured suddenly fearful that something might have happened to Raj and that was why he was missing.

            "If you must know." The man sighed dramatically, "The Vulpix is tending the Arcanine. I have not the faintest of where the cat is, however, I shall keep an eye out for him if you insist."

            <I do.> Mirei said sharper than she intended. At least now she was sure he was at least out of their hands. Ace would be okay since Taz found him. That just left her in a spot of trouble that she hadn't the foggiest of how to get out of.

            "You must be tired. Please eat and rest. We shall talk later of such matters. There will be plenty of time later for things of that nature."

            That was just as plainly a dismissal as the wave had been to the thugs. She followed one of the mute servants to a spacious room with big windows and comfortable resting places. Food was laid on the floor along with a porcelain bowl of sparkling water.

            Mirei ignored the food although she had eaten the night before and her stomach was rumbling. It could be drugged, or worse poisoned. Consuming her host’s food may also be taken as a gesture that she planned to stay. Did she want to? Safety, food, shelter. They were all offered for free in exchange for her presence. Then again it could be a trap of the cleverest sort and that made her wary.

            Sleep found its way to her and her crimson eyes closed. Hesitant at first then faster until she was breathing heavily. Her mind lightened leaving her in the land of dreams. Things could be thought over later.

            <What a pain.> Jamis growled to herself careful that the others couldn’t hear it. The two brothers were turning out to be more stress than she could handle. One was cunningly silent until she made a mistake, which he would promptly cry out with cutting remarks and the other was just sulky.

            Her human partners did not have the amount of patience she possessed and left her on her own. She glared down at her charges wrathfully and switched her tail just as Blackie use to do.

            “They want to kill you.” Blitz said suddenly watching her closely for a reaction. His coal eyes were penetrating, but her mind power was more so. She could tell he was admitting the truth by his thoughts.

            “And us.” Loki added helpfully.

            <And you know this how?>

            “I’ve spoken with a friend. She wishes not to be named, but she is concerned about us, about the future. We need to escape.”

            <How do you propose we do that O smart one?> Jamis said giving him lip. She grinned at his glare.

            “Help will be provided. That is all I know.” Blitz growled cryptically.

            <So you are saying we should all be the best of friends and make plans so we can be punished. You know that will happen when we get caught. When we get caught. What then? Will your precious friend be there to help us?> She snarled sadistically. Now her tail was lashing at the preposterous notion that they’d ever escape their own version of hell.

            Blitz did not grace her outburst with an answer, but Loki was more than happy to pick up the slack with accusations, “You want to die. You’ll condemn us to death because you are a coward and afraid of your own shadow.”

            The large dog lunged forward with her fangs bared and her black lips peeled back. She stopped inches from the yellow furred throat and hovered. The Flareon to his credit didn’t flinch with his purple eyes, but his body was trembling with released hormones.

            <Don’t. You. Ever. Call. Me. A. Coward! Is that clear you flame brain? I have more courage in my toenail than you do in your whole body! You think you and your brother have had it bad? The torture I’ve suffered through should have killed me. Evolution was only the beginning. Do you hear me? The Beginning!>

            That broke the scrappy fire type. He trembled uncontrollably and when she let him up his tail tucked under his body in defeat. He kept shooting glances at his brother who seemed unaffected by the display of brute strength. After all, he was the cool one and Jamis figured it had always been that way.

            <So what do you have in mind?>

            "Well, for starters we need to work together… peacefully." Blitz shot a meaningful look to the Flareon. "That is the only way we have a snowball's chance in hell."

            <What would be left if we were no snowballs? I mean even though this is hell already.>

            "Death."

            Jamis felt a shiver go up her spine and sat down hard. Although there had been times when she had wished feverantly that she was dead to end the pain, end the suffering, she had never actually thought of suicide. Death scared her in a deep way that nothing else came close to.

            Death was the unknown. It could be cold and dark as she had always assumed. Limbs stiffened and bodies were buried in the hard ground. Or it could be a hot inferno as the humans believed, except that she really couldn't imagine worse that what she was in already. Then it could be puffy and light as the clouds. The pleasant, but unlikely possibility.

            <So we're all good buddies now.> Jamis smirked to hide her fear. She looked down at the Flareon who was now minding his mouth exceedingly well.

            "If you call it that. I'd rather say associates."

            <Damn you are cold!>

            "No, I just don't like you. You've been under the humans for far too long. Those humans weren't the best type either. The manners you have picked up, the expressions, the attitude."

            The Flareon started to open his mouth then thought better of it.

            <Well it's better than being a cold, emotionless… hell, I don't even know what to call you.> Jamis flipped her tail in exasperation.

            "You could show your feelings a bit more bro. Lately you've been a block of ice." The Flareon said cocking his head. He couldn't understand why the change had come over his brother for the two were normally thicker than blood. Jamis understood it all too well unfortunately and sighed.

            <Alright then, now that we've covered that Blitz is a ice sculpture come to life, what's the plan?>

            Her baiting earned her a glare.

Chapter Twelve

            <What do you mean he took her? Who took her!> Taz said in a tone akin to panic. He was too old for running around in circles, however. If age taught him nothing but one thing it was to say calm. Except that it was difficult to say calm when there was an Arcanine with a gash splitting his nose almost in two and a very important cat missing.

            "Wi twied to stop em, weally." Ace managed through his torn muzzle fresh blood dripping down at the movement, "'e hit me with a weapon and wan into es caw. A blawk van."

            <You just take it easy now. Don't talk anymore okay? We'll figure this one out.> Taz soothed, but his thoughts were grim. He had thought that Raj was on her side, but he had been fooled by the thieving con artist and now was going to pay. Just having the thought of what might be done to sweet Mirei made his blood boil and brought forth a snarl.

            "Where's Mirei? And what happened to you Puppers?"

            Taz whirled savagely attacking the surprised Persian evolution. The big black cat stumbled back under the onslaught fending off the fox as best he could.

            "Woah! What's the matter with you?" He shouted backing into a wall. Bloody patches were torn from his skin and fur lay on the dirty pavement. Bewilderment shone bright in his green gem eyes and his paw was outstretched to protect his face.

            Taz stopped panting heavily with outrage as well as breathlessness. His light green eyes had taken a silver gleam to them and his sharp teeth were covered with blood making him look like a barbaric cannibal.

            <Why are you playing innocent?> Taz demanded hoarsely, but there was a shadow of doubt hovering in his voice. His tails swished precisely in rhythm and the triangle ears were laid flat against his head.

            "Playing? I don't even know what you are yapping about fire brush." The Panthra panted going back to old insults. His eyes were now wary although it was unclear what about. Taz's continued attack or what happened in his absence.

            <Mirei was kidnapped.>

            "Kwittynapped actually." Ace rasped through his split muzzle. His eyes were clouded with pain, but his sense of humor was undaunted.

            "What?" Raj screeched thunderstruck. He stared at his paws and growled under his breath, "It was all just a diversion to get me away. The meeting, the fight. Pretending to not let me come back."

            <What was that?> The fox asked pricking his ears and giving a sly look. This was no act of innocence even though Raj seemed to know about what was going on. It had obviously not been in his plans by the way he was spitting and cursing.

            "We have to find her."

            <Ace can't go anywhere with his injury. Mew only knows how he's remain conscious all this time.>

The big Arcanine staggered to his feet with enormous effort and wobbled a little. Mustering his energy he declared stoutly, "Let's go then."

            Suddenly his thick legs gave way beneath him and he went crashing down knocking his jaw against the cement. Blood poured from his sensitive black snout and his eyes rolled dizzily.

            "I see the problem." Raj commented switching his tail.

            "Perhaps I may be of assistance?"

            "Shit!" Raj yelped and whirled. Taz did the same and the two were facing an unblinking pair of violet eyes.

~~~~~
            Mirei drifted into consciousness and out again not wanting to wake up, but knowing that she must. Finally she shrugged off the last bit of sleep and climbed to her feet. Giving a splitting yawn she stared out the window. The sun had drifted past the mark of mid day and rested snugly just above the place where it would set. The clouds were beginning to turn golden with the rays and the shadows deepening around the building.
            Remembering where she was she decided to explore a bit. Wandering around her room she quickly grew bored with the nice decorations and simplistic yet tasteful furnishing. She briefly considered the food dish before turning the idea aside. But the more she thought about it the hungrier she became. Timidly she bits into a piece of meat letting the juices in her mouth engulf it. Waiting for any ill effects and feeling none she nibbled a bit more before going over to the exit.
            Pushing open the door Mirei was surprised to find it unlocked. She was sure that she was a prisoner of her room and the notion that she would have freedom, even within the limits of the hall, surprised her. A mute servant stood outside her door staring dully as she walked out. He nodded in a gesture of respect and fell in behind her as she strolled around.
            Like her room everything spoke of money and taste. Not to mention that there was nothing moving in the halls aside from her and her guard. That struck her as odd, but since she had no idea how rich people lived she assumed that the servants cleaned at night or early morning. They must since every item and square inch was sparkling with polish.
            A dull thump made her whirl around. Her guard was out cold looking even more lifeless and dull. He was sprawling out on the floor where he landed his limbs sticking out helter-skelter. Hissing she looked around for the attacker. A light mist of green bobbed and weaved almost drunkenly ignoring her completely. It swung down hitting her across the nose. Powder sprayed all over her face making her sneeze and gag. Recovering she looked to the blob.
            Giving chase without a second thought (thinking seemed to be obsolete here for some reason) she charged after the strange glow. Trice she almost had her paws on in and trice she missed. Each time the ball seemed to stumble and go slower.
            Revving up for a final pounce she shot forward only to find that the mist was gone and a door had appeared. Unable to break she slammed into the closet door, except that it was a closet, and tumbled down a short flight of stairs. Dizzily she sat up finding herself on a small landing with another, longer flight of stairs leading downward. Once again, thought did not happen (maybe it was the atmosphere or the food she had eaten) and she curiously skipped down the narrow passage. Hitting the bottom she stared around in wide-eyed disbelief.
            Cages, there was cages everywhere. Inside were pokemon. Some were hybrid, most Eevees of some sort, and others were still normal just sad and scared. Instruments lined the wall of the next room and a steel table sat in the center. Giggling she hauled herself up and proclaimed herself queen of the steel. That interested her for all of a second. Jumping down somewhat clumsily she pushed her way through the door that led to the left. Twisting and turning she pushed doors open from room to room ignoring the scared occupants.
Vaguely her mind protested that she should free them. Why? She was free and they were not! Should she take the time to help them when there was so much to see and proclaim? Maybe they would take her kingdoms from her and proclaim it as their own. No, she should let them out. It was the right thing to do except that who cared about what was right anymore?
While she was having that argument between her good sense and her silly side her body meandered to and fro. Through doors and down passageways, there was no human presence although their scents lingered teasingly.
She skipped along merrily in her own induced world making no note of the changing scenery. The lights were dimmer and fear lingered in the air; human and pokemon alike. Stone replaced the artificial tiling on the floor and walls leaving the hall cold and compact. Electric lights flickered dully and the doors were heavy. Everything about it was old. This basement stronghold had been built in the times were marauders terrorized the castle keep and the villagers fled here for safety.
Later it was used as a holding cell for the insane or lawbreakers of the highest degree. That was the use for over a century. Now in modern times it was a different sort of prison.
Mirei didn’t know all of this and in her present state wouldn’t have cared even if she had. Prancing with insane energy she slammed into a door. Rubbing her head ruefully she glared vengefully up at the lock that had kept it shut. Determined to be the victor dark energy began to form around her flickering almost as much as the lighting. The drug that had put her out of her mind was making it difficult to concentrate. And without concentration it was difficult to keep it all together.
Wading it into a makeshift ball she batted the dark energy with an outstretched paw. Tediously it rolled towards the door waver a bit at the uneven stone beneath. Just as it looked like it was going to stop a final bit of force pushed it and the expulsion blasted the door off it’s hinges. It also blasted Mirei backward into the stone wall solidly behind her.
“Darn it. Silly wall getting in the way like that!” Mirei shouted shaking her head and bouncing to her feet. The drug absolved the pain although once it wore off there would be hell to pay.
Entering the smoking doorway she stared in blankly seeing only her shadow flickering from the light behind her. The rest was blackness. Shivering she was about to retreat (could her mindless state be wearing off?) until her cupped ears caught a brief scrabbling on paws and three small forms shot off deeper into the darkness.
            Jamis wasn’t pleased with the new arrangements. She and the brothers had been removed from their former abode (they had been living together for awhile). Their new lodging was far from homely with dark corridors and damp stone walls. Everything smelled musty and ranked of age. Old electric lights had been installed, but they had the look of forty years in the past and went out every once in a while.
            <Where’s your friend now?> Jamis taunted in boredom. Her long tail hit the ground making a hollow smack.
            Blitz growled, but made no reply. He was busy going along the edges looking for cracks or fissures in the rock. Inch by inch he crept along with his nose to the ground and his legs taunt. Finding nothing he stopped his inspection and flopped down next to his brother.
            <I could have told you there was no way out. This is a professional cell. It was built a long time ago unlike those modern ones at the lab. For some reason they are scared that we'll escape or something similar. Why else would they put us here in isolation?>
            "Thanks for the picker upper. I feel so much better now knowing there's some evil purpose behind this." Loki groaned sarcastically and rolled his eyes. His fiery coat shone dully in the darkness.
            <Shut up.> Jamis requested not really expecting him to comply. They never physically fought after the day she was called a coward, the Flareon knew his limits, but a sparring of words generally followed. Today there was no biting reply or scalding retort just gloomy silence.
            "Why do you think they want us?" The Flareon almost whimpered.
            <Dunno.>
            "Don't you care?"
            <My life lost its pleasure and meaning a long time ago. What do I have left to care about?> Jamis replied dully satisfied at the outraged expression.
            "Would you two stop?" Blitz growled from where he was laying in the corner. His jagged ears were twitching irritably and his black eyes were half closed. "I would like to get some sleep if you don't mind."
            The two stared at him then Jamis shrugged. Silence descended over the trio until heavy breathing took over. The two brothers were sleeping side by side rhythmically snoring. Jamis was too uptight to sleep. She wouldn't admit it to the cynical little fire type hybrid, but she was lonely and her life did matter. She didn't want to die! Why else would she hang on so long?
            Suddenly a pale green light flickered in and out before solidifying into a small pokemon. He swung his head around in confusion and then focused on Jamis. His eyes were a cheery blue, but a bit unsteady and his mouth was curled into a sheepish smile.
            "I guess this isn't it." He hiccuped his gaze swinging to the two sleeping hybrids. Scratching his head he mumbled, "But there's Blitz."
            <Cirus!> A deep, angry voice cried and a large Mewtwo appeared. He collared the smaller legendary by the scruff shaking him as if to knock some sense into him.
            "Eeep. What is it?" Cirus squealed and squeaked. The Mewtwo brought him around until he was facing Jamis.
            <She was not supposed to see you.> He growled clearly irritated his strong tail moving back and forth.
            "She seeing you too. Right now in fact." Cirus replied impishly earning another shake. He tried to pry the strong hands off him and only succeeded in making them tighter.
            <Only because I had to retrieve you.> The large clone snarled annoyed by Cirus' mischief, <And don't think Mercedes will let what you did to the other one slid by either.>
            <Forget it.> A pink creature sighed joining the conversation. The Mew looked tired and overworked. Her voice prompted the Clone to drop his prey and Cirus to scramble behind her. <Jamis has seen Cirus already. Take him home while I talk with her.>
            Cirus stuck his tongue out and pulled down his eye. Mewtwo balled his fists by made no move forward.
            <And don't think you won't receive disciplinary action about your powder.> Mew pointed out. That earned a defeated glare.
            "I was just trying to make the trip more fun for her. Who wants to go through that place when they aren't in a state of drunkenness?" Cirus pouted then the two males disappeared.
            <Nice guy.> Jamis commented then turned serious, <Are you Blitz's friend?>
            <I am.>
            <So how do you plan to help us bust this joint?>
            <I don't. It is up to others. According to the rules I may not interfere directly. I must use a player.>
            <A pawn you mean. Someone to do your work then get smacked down by the attacking knight. Very nice of you.> Jamis sneered grasping the concept immediately. She used a chess game as a reference.
            <A pawn.> The psychic agreed wearily, <You will know when to act. Don't hesitate when your chance arrives or the results could be disastrous. There is more resting on this one escape than just the freedom of yourself and two others. Remember that.>
            Then a pink glow surrounded her and she winked out leaving the stone cell once again cold and dark. A shiver raced up the large dog hybrid's spine and she sat down her big paws bunched underneath her. Wrapping her tail around them much in the manner of a cat she remarked shaking her head dolefully, <Always giving cryptic answers then disappearing without bothering to explain them.>
Chapter Thirteen
            "Well?" The said smooth as silk and the eyes blinked lightly, "General when assistance is offered there is speech involved."
            "Sha'lace." Raj snarled moving slightly in front of the fox. There was certainly no love lost between the two and he didn't want the Vulpix to be hurt.
            "My current name." The mild reply.
            <Ka'vah.> Taz grinned, but it wasn't a pleased grin. More like an uptight smile forced.
            "My prior name." She agreed cheerfully. "And you are?"
            "Awce." The Arcanine growled warily. He was back down on the pavement and not happy about it either.
            "Ace it is."
            <What do you want? I thought I had seen the last of you years ago. I believe you swore to never look on the likes of me ever again.>
            "Ever is a long time and times change." She paused and her form started to take shape, "As well you know Vulpine."
            <As well I know.> Taz spat staring up with silver flecked eyes. The green was now almost engulfed with the shiny color.
            "Which leads us back to, what do you want?" Raj snapped ignoring the two's banter. He was more concerned with what was happening now than what happened so long ago in the past.
            The four lapsed into a wary silence. Ace had managed his feet and was leaning heavily on a brick wall, but still managed to look ready for anything. Crimson stained his cream fur and his black nose was nothing but a blob of red. Taz had moved in front of Rajah taking up a curiously light stance considering the situation. Raj was lashing his tail anxious to be off.
            "Things are critical, I don't need to tell you that. If the darkness succeeds, and no I speak not of our group young cub, we shall all be doomed. Just how long will the legendaries survive without people to believe in them? That is why our faction was created, but this will doom us all if we do not band together. The others refuse to see this. Why are they helping the enemy? Simply because it may gain them what they need to continue on: Myth. Without myth and legends they lose their power and degenerate into normal pokemon. That includes myself and your father, kit. And your mistress Vulpine." Sha'lace explained bluntly. Her wispy violet form was in the shape of a Marowak with deep purple eyes and a pure white club. Her beautiful eyes flickered between them flitting among hope and pleading. They had to trust her.
            <Go on.> Taz softly requested. His ears were pricked and his eyes scared. He knew this to be true although he had never paid much attention to the possibility. How could humans die out? There were billions of them, more so than there were many species of pokemon.
            "In this I must aid you." Her attention focused on Taz and she whispered, "I know we have not seen eye to eye on things in the past, but trusting me is crucial. Could you manage it just once more?"
The multi-tailed fox stared up emotionless and his tongue lolled. His keen eyes no longer held any anger just an indescribable look. Slowly his head lowered in a nod.
~~~~~

            "Hey wait. I'm not going to hurt you!" Mirei shouted to the hiding forms. Three pairs of reflective eyes stared out from the dark. Each winked out and there was a low mummer of voices. A conference.

            <Why do you come?> A cold feminine voice demanded without a trace of fear.

            "Umm, I fell?" Mirei answered the effects of the powder wearing off. A major headache was pounding in her skull distracting her. She shook her head to clear her vision and leaned forward trying to see them. That produced another scuttling of paws as they moved away from her gaze deeper into the cloak of darkness.

            "She fell?" A more timid voice whispered barely audible. "We all fell. Fell from what we use to be into this!"

            <Quiet.>

            "She has a point." The last voice, male, interjected on behalf of the second. "We use to be respectable. Now we are trash to rot in a cell. They have made us freaks.”

            <Then Freaks we shall be. I will not hear such talk! We are still alive and we can still fight!>

            “Uh, excuse me?” Mirei said faintly realizing that they had completely forgotten her. There was a noise, she assumed one of them had jumped, and then more paw steps.

            A sleek rose head slid into view out of the darkness. A blood red jewel winked brightly, too bright considering the dim lighting shining in behind Mirei. Two large, almost disproportional ears followed and then the slender body. The paws were far too large and the two tails were balled at the end rather than tips. Her eyes glittered with an inner determination and her tiny mouth was bared in a snarl.

            The second on to emerge sort of stalked, that was what it most resembled anyway. Two antenna dangled down over a deep bronze ring that covered the round forehead. Twin pod shaped ears with encircled tips were next and then the body melted out of the darkness. The bronze rings shone dimly and the body was so dark a green that Mirei had to squint to make out the Umbreon shape. A bushy tail curled neatly around the left hind leg also tip with bronze encircling it. His eyes were a darker blue than the Espeon’s. They gleamed with life, but no emotions were evident. He had shut them away behind a cloud of fog and innocence. Tiny silver wings lay still against his shoulder blades.

            The third approached timidly creeping. She was mostly Vaporeon, but instead of rubbery frills she had soft, small feathers. Two full fledged Articuno wings were folded down neatly the tips sticking out just after where her hips ended. Her royal purple eyes held a deep shadow to them.

            <What is your name and how did you find us?> The leader barked, her leery blue eyes never leaving Mirei's face.

            "Uh." Mirei said faintly unable to remember what exactly brought her down here. Gulping she answered with the only thing she knew for sure, "My name's Mirei."

            "Mirei?" The littlest one perked up. Her feathery frills rose in recognition and her eyes leapt with joy. Mirei had no clue why though, for she had never met this creature before, she was sure of it. "Jamis told me all about you."

            <Don't you say that name!> The Espeon snapped turning on her companion. A faint lavender aurora encircled her and her ice eyes blazed with agony, <Never. She took us.>

            The Vaporeon cowered in silent accent. She slunk behind the Umbreon who looked worried. He opened his mouth then closed it again looking to the Dark cat.

            "Um, okay. What did she tell you about me? Is she well?" Mirei asked carefully avoiding the name. The Espeon lashed her tail knowing full well what was being spoken of, but having no power to do anything.

            "Fine." The Vaporeon squeaked shooting a fearful glance at the other female. Bold by the lack of immediate action she stuttered, "Last I knew. You’re my sister too."

            Dead silence was met with that remark. Mirei was stunned. She had know that there were others, other clones, aside for her sister. This was the first she had ever met one though. The Espeon was still suspicious and the Umbreon thoughtful.

            "My name is Midnight." He pronounced glancing at the leader. She growled silently then added, <And I am Twilight.>

            "Aqua. I use to be Paige, but I evolved." The Vaporeon said simply. For all the obvious genius level intelligence, the Vaporeon was surprisingly simple. It was shocking sometimes.

            <Let us go. Mirei had so kindly provided an escape. Let us use it while we still can.> Twilight snipped with coarse courtesy. Door maker or not, she still wasn't pleased with Mirei's insistence to stay.

            "Be nice." Midnight warned his cautious personality showing. Dark verses Psychic would make a very short match in his opinion. "I'll go first and scout it out."

            "No need. All the humans are gone. It must be the weekend or something." Mirei explained puzzled.

            <Gone?> Twilight echoed warily, <What do you mean 'gone'. The humans never leave, ever.>

            "That's just something we'll have to figure out, won't we? A bit of detective work."

            That earned him looks from all three. Chuckling nervously he slunk out ahead. Suddenly he cocked his ears in the direction that led deeper down the hall. There the lights were dimmer and the stone walkway more uneven. Sounds, faint as they were, bounced off the stone walls conducting them upward. It sounded like a conversation was being held and it wasn't human voices he heard.

~~~~~
            “What! She was here? And I slept right through it all!” Loki hollered and Jamis couldn’t help but make a snide remark, <Ya snooze ya loose. Isn’t that how the saying goes?>
            “You shut up. I can’t believe I missed it…” After a few minutes of listening to virtually the same stuff sputtered out over and over in different ways Jamis tuned him out. She stared moodily at the wall thinking of what the Mew had said, wondering just who was her pawn. There were millions of candid, but in the end it meant that someone had to take the fall for her. She was proud, and would admit it too, such a burden it was to know that someone else was taking her knocks.
            “Hey, is anyone in there?” A male voice called out from the other side of the door. There was concern in his voice and a good dose of quiet caution too.
            Jamis shrunk back undecided. She knew very well who was on the other side of the door. If she opened her mouth, so to speak, it would be over. Helplessly she looked to the brothers. Loki was stupefied into silence for once. Blitz managed to have his wits about him though and he called out through the door calm as could be.
            “There are three of us. Prisoners. Who are you?” Blitz replied.
            There was a brief conference on the other side then a cautious answer in the same voice, “There are three of us also plus one other who freed us. If you are prisoners then we are friends for we are also prisoners.”
            "Then open the door for us."
            <First we need proof of your identities. The truth in your words will be confirmed with truth.> A distinctly feminine voice said lowly. Jamis flattened her ears as the psychic voice boomed in her head. This was most definitely not going to be a fun meeting. If the Espeon didn't tear her apart she was sure the others would.
            "How are we suppose to prove ourselves? There is no way to see through the door. Not even my tiny paw could fit under that crack proving us pokemon." Loki half groaned and half outraged.
            <Shut up. I have a plan.> Jamis said brushing the smaller red pokemon aside with her big front paw. He was indignant about being pushed around and said as much, but the psychic was paying his rants no mind. She had better things to do with it.
            Concentrating she fell into a trance. She knew that she was taking a risk exposing herself before they were out, but she could see no other way around it. She was sure that the Espeon would fly into a wrath at the first wisp of her consciousness so she sought out the other members.
The second mind she encountered was that of the Umbreon. It was blocked by his Dark powers and closed to her probing. The next was little Aqua. Jamis was surprised that the little Vaporeon had survived and even made a sort of alliance with the two. She could sense friendship and good will. Sighing at the good, yet warped nature of her poor sister she wondered why her two sides didn't fight. Perhaps Espeon and Arcanine were too similar to have many quarrels. They were both canine types for the most part and both carnivorous. Aqua's was a bird and a canine where one was carnivorous and the other omnivorous. Different instincts playing against each other.
A strange feeling came to her when she felt the four member of the party. It was most certainly Dark, however, the path was wide open. Worry and doubt filtered through as well as a sort of confidence. Jamis recognized Mirei almost immediately of course and stopped herself from shouting out. They were still in a tricky situation.
Espeon she was sure would stop any attempts to break Jamis out without a second thought. Perhaps the Umbreon was the same. That left Aqua firmly on her side. They had parted on bad terms but her little sister was ever faithful. Mirei she wasn't so sure about. A lot had happen since they were separated and her sister had changed drastically. Could she be counted on to come through? That was what Jamis planned to find out.
Chapter Fourteen
            Rajah twitched his tail nervously as he and Taz, or rather Vulpine, padded down the side street. Behind them he could feel Sha'lace's eyes watching and could hear Ace's footfalls. The ghost had been true to her word, healing Ace enough so that he could walk. He retained a small, token limp and fresh scars crossed his furry muzzle decoratively.
            Half his mind was on Mire, imagining the horrible things being done to her. The other half was frantically analyzing the information Sha'lace had doled out. Humans had never mattered much to him before. His philosophy was that he left them to their mundane lives and they left him to his for the most part. He was a little more than surprised to find out the humans were necessary to his father, legendary of the Dark. Although they were never close blood runs deep. The Panthra knew he owned his very existence to the kind lion. The Dark lord could have just as easily cast him out and wiped his big paws of the whole matter.
            Now the tables were turned and Rajah felt as though he owed it to his father to return the favor. He just didn't know how. Without the knowledge of this 'dark' this evil he had no chance of combating the plans they set out. How could he battle something when he had nothing to go on? He needed answers and the only one who seemed to know what was going on had them.
            "Sha'lace?"
            "Hmm?" There was a distracted quality to the faint reply.
            "What is this darkness you spoke of? What does it want or need? And just how do you plan to stop it." The last question was actually a statement. Surely the ghost had a plan of some sort other wise she would have never revealed herself to them.
            "The darkness I speak of is all the evils that escaped from Pandora's box. Greed, lust, hate, and so many more. When they are utilized the negative energy usually evaporates, but a force has taken to collecting them. With every hate crime committed, with every grand larceny it grows in power. The leader is the most powerful legendary of us all. He does not require human life because he lives off of such misery. Pokemon are just as capable of murder as humans are, don't deny it. Sh'ir Khan is a great Dragon, the sort of Chinese legend. A great mane of gold and a serpent body with stubby legs."
            "Why does he live so? Something must have pushed him to it." Raj prodded enthralled by hearing of the dark. He had never imagined that there could be another legendary or one that was truly evil either.
            "A great wrong was done to him. When the world was new, humans were just beginning to create towns, cultures. So the legendaries were born as myths arose about their creation. Lady Mew was the first and greatest of these." Raj noted that Mew's name had been said with a tinge of bitterness. "She stood for the child's nature and carefree attitude. People are fascinated with freedom. Next was the Keeper of Time. They tried to shape him the same except something was told wrong. Well, you've both met him and you can very well guess what. Boy children are not quite as nice as girls then you mix that with his power. You see where that went."
            She paused and he noted the grimace on her face. Obviously, Celebi was not her favorite legendary to deal with. In fact, Raj wondered if anyone other than Mew could tolerate him at all. Taz snorted expressing what he though of the drunken fairy. Of course the Time Keeper never touched a drop he just was that way naturally.
            "Next were the three birds, then the three beasts. They stood for balance. To control them Lugia and Ho-oh was created. These two great birds watched over their trios protectively lest they fight. They were for peace. Next were the lesser legendaries all for different reasons. I, Sheenica, was created for the purpose of the dead. My job was to collect souls and guide them where they should go. I really don't do that and never did, but the ancients insisted that every legendary was to have a purpose. Lastly they had the idea of creating one to rule them all. Long councils filled with hate and disagreements past the nights. Some believed that there had already been enough made to satisfy their needs and another would be tempting fate. They were right of course.
            "However, there were those who were greedy. They wanted one more, just one more. You see, to them we were gods. If a villager even glimpsed one of us they were treated with great respect for the belief was that they had been blessed. Not true unfortunately. It just meant that one of us had been careless.
            "All of this hate, greed, and fear began to circulate around the subject being debated. Thus the great Dragon was born unplanned and regretted. Filled with this hate that he had been made with he rampaged everything. We, the other legendaries, tried to stop him, but he was too strong for all of use combined.
            “There had been another among our ranks. She was of the Fighting type. A real scrappy gal who was unable to admit defeat. She tried to muster us to greater efforts and failed. All the fight had been whipped out of us. Bravely and foolishly she pursued the Dragon. She was fatally wounded in the tremendous fight that followed, however, she had beat him back. Silently he retreated to lick his wounds and reappear at a later date.”
            “So, now he is all rested and ready to kick tail.” Ace muttered startling the others. He had been quiet the whole time and they had been so absorbed in the story that they forgot he was there.
            “In essence, yes.”
            <And we must stop him or all is lost.> Taz continued on Ace’s statement. His narrow face was pinched with though and distress.
            “Yes. Mew, has been preparing for this showdown for centuries. She has collected spies, warriors, and servants of all sorts. She has banded most of the legendaries together. I loathe giving her praise, but she has done all that could be done. Unfortunately that is not enough. Sh’ir has succeeded at his goal through the powerful human by the name of Giovanni. Using laboratories he has taken on the role of God and created a race of his own choosing. These humans have been infused with pokemon DNA and possess some of the traits. The hybrids such as your friend were just a stepping-stone to ensure the process would work. Now he plans to discard them, all of them.” Sha’lace explained her misty form shifting.
            <Can we expect help?>
            Silence greeted that question and the three turned to find the ghost faded off into the night.
            <Mirei!> Jamis shouted putting a pleading into her voice. One the other side of the thick door the black cat’s head shot up in surprise and delight.
            <Is it really you? How did you end up down here?> Mirei asked using her Dark skills to keep the others in her party from hearing. Her voice was cautious and anxious, but not hostile.
            <Yes, can you get your friends to let us out? Something’s going down and it will need all of us.>
            <What do you mean ‘all of us’.> Mirei hissed suddenly guarded and her thoughts were closed off leaving only the link to speak with.
            Jamis was hurt by her sister’s reaction, but understood why she was being shut out. She composed her thoughts making sure to keep them as open as possible to show her good intent. <You, Aqua, the Umbreon, the Espeon, Blitz, Loki, and myself. Maybe some others. Evil has taken over here. Can’t you sense it? We have to stop it and make things right because even though it was against our will we helped. We helped to build this cruel empire and now we need to bring it crashing down about our ears.>
            <I see.> Everything opened up again and Jamis heard some hasty whispering on the other side of the door. A voice called out, “Stand back. We are going to blow down the door.”
            Obediently they crowded at the back of the cell their warm fur pressed against the cold stone. The door slammed inwards with a heavy puff of thick smoke and a figure entered. Jamis knew exactly who it was and she knew that they would have to settle this before things could go any further.
            <You!> The Espeon spat her pale, icy eyes widening. Her jewel glowed maddeningly and her tail bashed the sides of the door. Her ears flattened making her skull stand out. Bright violet energy surrounded her radiating outward and crackling almost like static.
            <I don’t want to fight you.>
            <The hell you don’t! It’s a little late don’t you think.> She spat. Fearfully the others backed away from her raging power leaving Jamis solely in the Espeon's path.
            <Fighting is just what we don't need right now. I'm sorry I took you, I don't know how to say that any other way, but it was not my choice. My whole damn life has not been my choice.> Jamis said calmly except that inside she didn't feel calm. The waters raged and she wanted to lash out.
            <So I am to feel pity? Not likely. You have caused me far too much pain and the damage is irrevocable.>
            <So we fight to the death down here in this dirty little prison cell while our enemies laugh themselves silly at our stupidity?> Jamis whispered looking defeated.
            "Um…" Aqua began hesitantly and two pairs of eyes focused on her with nasty intent. She fell silent, but shifted nervously her ear frills twitching. Her nervousness spread and soon all but the psychics were doing the same.
            <What do you mean 'our enemies'?>
            <The ones who forced me to capture you. You don't think that I just waltz into people's lives and tear them apart because I want to. Except now I've worn out my usefulness and so have you. We are a threat to them somehow. Why else would we all be moved and put down here in isolation? Did you think about that?> Jamis snapped losing her frayed temper. She felt a strong dislike, no hate, for the other psychic. She was sure the feeling was mutual by the icy glare she was receiving.
            There was a long silence as the sun Eevee thought it over. Her tail switched with deliberate even swipes and her jewel glinted. Finally she looked up with a set face.
            <We will work together then, but only as long as needed. After that I never want to see you again. If I do then it will be a fight, to the death.> The Espeon hissed ignoring the looks of statement she received. Even her brother was surprised by the hatred and implied violence. The hybridization had done more to her than anyone could ever have guessed.
            "Um…" Aqua began again, this time her voice quivering fearfully. Everyone looked at her and she pointed shakily down the hall. Dark shapes lumbered towards them ungainly and the glint of bone white canines shone in the pale light.
            The leader emerged showing himself a Houndoom. Except that he was bigger, stronger than any Houndoom ever born of a natural mother. His bone bracelets tinkled almost gratingly and his horns gleamed where they were broken off at the tips. Scars traced his black fur and his tail was like a bullwhip. Behind him other adapted pokemon melted out of the shadows. There were about twenty in all.
            "Come. We return you." The leader barked in a guttural tongue. It was so thickly accented and in such a low voice that the group had to strain to understand it.
            Loki boldly stepped forward planting his feet apart directly in their way. Curious glances pasted him over, but clearly the Flareon was not the one they came for. To them he might as well not exist. The notion that he might resist them or become a threat did not even touch their minds.
            Instead the leader stared straight at Mirei. The black cat shrunk back under the weight of their gaze and side behind her sister out of habit. Jamis stepped forward her big paws causing a stir of mold spores. She imitated Loki in his stance. Slowly the others did the same while Aqua scurried to Mirei's side.
            "Come. Do not fight. You will not like punishment for resistance." The Houndoom barked harshly. A feral smile crossed his lips in a way that reminded Jamis of Blackie. It was that same cruel enjoyment.
            "Go to hell and stay there." Loki spat puffing up defensively from the front. His maroon eyes held courage, but it was wavering. He knew that he stood little chance and they only way they could pull this off was cooperation.
            Relief course through him when Midnight stepped up beside him ready to battle. The green pokemon’s tail was bristled with anticipation and a reckless smile was on his face. Blitz strode between them his spikes raised, but his temper cool as ever. The others filled in behind those three and Jamis crowded her sisters back. With their closed ranks it would be difficult to get at Mirei, however, this was merely a delay tactic. They were outnumbered and outmatched.
            "Now we show you how to fight." The Houndoom agreed and his ranks fell in behind him waiting for the command to battle.
~~~~~

The young man stared desolately out the window. He was located at a pokemon center and after hard searching had come up empty. It was as if his friend had disappeared off the face of the Earth. No one had used him in a battle since the day he was taken or the bar code would have been taken. No one had seen an Umbreon in this town for weeks and it was the same with all the others. Nothing.

            Looking out in the alley he saw a curious sight. An Arcanine, a Vulpix, and a strange looking black Persian were discussing something with a glowing Marowak. Abruptly the ghost disappeared leaving the others still talking among themselves. Gary wondered what they were up to and suddenly his interest was piqued.

            Gathering up his small amount of possessions he stole out the back door and hid himself around the corner. None of the strange group noticed his spying and he listened intently surprised that he could understand what they were saying as if they were speaking English. He was sure, but maybe they were speaking English.

            "I take that as a no. That means no help and no way to get in. We need a human to pass through those doors and so far it's not looking like that is going to happen." The black cat sighed heavily and leaned casually against the wall. His voice was tinged with worry and exhaustion.

            <She may help us, if She knows.> The fox put in slowly. Gary wasn't sure who this She was, but by the sound of the voice She was important.

            "We can't wait for it. She maybe busy with other things. Taz, you haven't checked in for almost a week." The Arcanine said sensibly.

            <That's what I'm banking on. The hope that She will notice my absence and take it as a sign of trouble.>

            A sudden uproar caused Gary to peek around the corner. In the mist of the three originals there was now a fourth. He was green creature and Gary immediately recognized him as Celebi. Stifling a gasp of amazement he strained to hear every word said and he even risked being seen by watching.

            <Cirus.> The fox Taz cried in disgust. His tails twitched and his eyes narrowed.

            "My good bestest buddy." The fairy cried happily then stopped when he saw the frosty glares. Picking up the scattered pieces of his dignity he continued, "I've been demoted to messenger boy. Stupid Clone, always getting me in trouble with Mew."

            Gary had no idea who the Clone was, but Mew earned eye widening and hands over his mouth.

            <You get in trouble enough by yourself and don’t mention Her name out loud. It isn't safe to talk freely here.> Taz snapped crisply.

            "Fine fine. Mercedes sent me to tell you that all your little friends are safe, for now anyway. She's sent help, but she doesn't know how soon the human can arrive. Uh… and I forgot the rest."

            "Forgot huh? Must have been sleeping too much again." The black cat put in slyly with a smirk plastered all over his face. Almost immediately the green fairy popped out with a flash of pastel smoke "I knew that would make him go away."

Chapter Fifteen

            <Don't look, but there is a human spying on us.> Taz whispered privately to the other two. Not only did he not want the human to hear, but it was quite possible that Cirus and Sha'lace were still hanging around. He was convinced that Sha'lace had known of Cirus' coming and disappear just out of sight.

            Panthra licked his lips nervously trying not to turn his head and still look in the direction Taz had indicated with his tails. Although the fox had his 'voice' he still used body language to communicate many things, if you knew what to look for anyway.

            <I don't think She sent him.> Taz continued grimly cocking his head and laying his ears back. Indecision laced his voice and filled his eyes.

            "Well, there's only one way to find out." Raj shrugged boldly and turned, "Hey you. Come here and tell me just how much you overheard."

            Hesitantly a teenage human boy stepped out into the open. He looked terrible with a unhealthy thinness and pale skin. His face was ravaged with pain and loss, but he stood facing them with dignity.

            "I heard many things." The boy replied seemingly unconcerned. "Mostly about this She and your friends are in trouble. And that you need a human to help you save them."

            "Woah, just how long was he standing there?" Ace breathed wondering if the human had seen Sha'lace. He had obviously seen Cirus and still was unconcerned. Perhaps he was past the point of caring.

            "We could exchange services." The boy continued staring at them, "You are obviously well connected and your connections may have the information I need. Information I would gladly pay for by getting you where you need to go."

            <What sort of information. I can promise nothing if it is beyond my power.> Taz remarked warily. He was interested in the proposition since it would save time, but as a servant of Mew he was bound to his promises. He would not commit to something that was impossible to complete.

            "My Umbreon was stolen from me. I've been searching for him with no idea, no clue putting me on the right track. I want him back where he belongs, by my side."

            "A noble speech." Raj nodded feeling respect for this human, "I have friends in many places and assuredly I could find out what became of him."

            There was a brief silence as the human mulled that over and a resolve hardened his face. He stepped forward unaware or uncaring of the possible danger he put himself in and looked straight to Raj.

            "You've got a deal."

            The formal speech was getting to Raj and he could school his tongue no longer. Besides there wasn't time to make nice. They had a rescue to pull off and the fate of the world rested upon it's success for he was sure that the Darkness wished to use Mirei for something. Something important.

            "I'm Gary by the way." The trainer said introducing himself. Clearly he was past the polite, formal speeches also. Now that they were cemented into a deal together he believed that they should be on equal terms. The pokemon told him their names and the four made their way to the laboratory/ mansion that awaited them.

            The gate was automatic with no guards. It was designed to allow humans to cross through, but not pokemon. Getting out on the other hand was a different matter. The cold iron spikes clanged tight behind them and there was no turning back.

            Gary opened the door to the house, which was surprisingly unlocked. Inside was a plush and spotless waiting hall, which was richly furnished with expensive, tasteful items. Chairs of comfort lined the walls and there was a soft ticking from the huge grandfather clock that dominated on corner. The carpet was clearly oriental with ornate designs in red, gold, and black. The foursome took a moment to gape before regaining the drive to press inward.

            Each room there after was equally impressive with different regions of the world as the theme. Gorgeous pictures hung from the pristine walls and appropriate furnishings were granted. Some of the rooms were clearly designed for the use of pokemon, but every room was empty of occupants. Spotless and tidied, but devoid of life. It gave off a feeling of eyes watching them from unseen places and they walked close together unwilling to separate even in the slightest.

            "Look." Raj whispered pointing ahead. His vision was better than the others and he could make out the details far ahead. He could see that the human was an adult male and that he was unconscious on the lush carpet face down. He was clad in livery.

            “I wonder what happened to him.” Ace whispered nervously. His courage was flagging with each step and he needed reassurance from his elder companions.

            When they crept closer Taz sneered half way in relief and half in disgust, <Cirus’ work. This poor man will be out for hours and when he awakes I can only imagine the headache.>

            “The question is why. Why would Cirus knock this guy out with his precious powder then leave him in the middle of the hall?” The Panthra said curiously poking the prone figure with a claw. Withdrawing in puzzlement he looked further down the hall. At the end was a dark rectangle. A door had been left open and he had a hunch that it led downward. “Never mind. I think I can guess.”

~~~~~
            The Houndoom suddenly sprung with the natural ease of a born warrior. His strike was directed at Midnight. Luckily, the Umbreon had been in enough battles to evade his attack and chance a strike of his own. His teeth scratched the big fire dog lightly not even enough to draw some blood. In return the Houndoom managed to land another blow that sent him rolling.
            The other mutated pokemon stood unnaturally silent behind their battling leader. Not emotion shone through their eyes and although the sets were of different colors they all held the same theme: emotionless. They didn't care who won, they were just there to await delivered instructions, Jamis saw that at once.
            Acting on the hunch that if the snake's head was chopped off the body would be disarmed. Bullying her way through the Freaks that surrounded her she lunged at the monster catching him off guard. Taking advantage of his surprise she latched on to the front of his neck where she could grip at the jugular. Except that his bone plate collar kept foiling her attempts and he was moving, thrashing trying to dislodge her. And if she had weighed any less he would have succeeded easily.
            <Halt.> She called wildly while she had the upper paw. The struggles beneath her ceased and the Houndoom waited patiently for her to collect her thoughts. <This is senseless and without honor. We should have one fight instead of many so as not to damage ourselves. The master needs us undamaged and usable, especially Mirei.>
            "So what do you offer? Surrender." The Houndoom laughed mirthlessly and his minions joined him hollowly.
            <No, one on one battle. You pick one from your side and I'll fight for our side. If you win we all come quietly and without hassle. Go it? Is that acceptable to you?>
            The dark creature thought about it his long canine tooth rubbing against the bottom of his jaw pensively. Reaching a decision he suddenly snapped his back upwards and sprang backwards. Jamis found herself on the floor with twin red eyes staring down at her.
            "I accept your challenge. Prepare for death."
            Slowly she rose to her feet and studied her opponent. All of their lives hung in the balance and any tiny miscalculation could ruin them. She knew that she was facing someone much more experienced, stronger, and faster than she was. He obviously knew how to battle well and was aware of tactics she could only dream about. Like how he flipped her off him. That made him clever and well versed in the ways of fighting as well. Even though the odds were stacked against her she was the only one who had a chance.
            Twilight had the fire and Midnight the experience, but what one lacked the other had. It would not take long to defeat either. Aqua and Mirei could not battle even if they had both. Although Aqua had a type advantage she had not trained since she evolved. Loki was brave and scrappy, but he too was lacking any sort of experience. Blitz was really the only one who could do it, but she did not trust him. He was too cold, too detached. That was something she had always tried not to do and mostly succeeded. Passion was needed to win this fight and after all those years of torture she was ready.
            Suddenly the mutual circling broke and Jamis lunged forward feeling as though she had fallen into a cleverly set trap, except how else could she win, but by being offensive? The Houndoom disarmed her stroke and with lightning speed executed one of his own. His Dark teeth sank sharply into her side stopped only by her thick layer of fluffy fur. Disengaging herself Jamis made to hit him with her oversized paws. It had worked in the past and she hoped it would work again.
            One struck him full force across the face sending him reeling backward into his pack mates. Snarling and snapping they pushed him back in and tightened the circle around the two fighters. Clearly there would be no running. Fight or die were the options. And she intended on living.
            Licking blood off his lower lip where his out jutting canine fang had pierced the skin he gave a devilish grin. It, coupled with his glinting eyes, showed that he was enjoying this with a relish that she would never understand. Even the pain he was feeling made him happy and content. Pain was part of the experience.
            They fought several flurries on after the other to test each other for strength and weaknesses. Fur was tore, but other that the cut lip there was no blood shed yet. When the blood ran freely Jamis knew the real battle would begin in earnest. For now they were just playing. Toying and testing each other until the starting move was pulled. And Jamis knew she had to pull it first. If she didn’t he would know all of her weaknesses while she would know precious little of his. In short the toying was getting her nowhere fast.
            Shooting forward with her tails lashing wildly the Arcanine attempted to sink her teeth in the Houndoom’s leg. If she crunched down hard enough she would cripple him. A crippled fighter was far easier to deal with than one who was faster than you. At the very least she hoped to cut through his tendon severing the hamstring.
            Her jaws closed around flesh, but it was too high up on the leg and she was having trouble biting down at that angle. Also, the Dark type could reach her shoulders with his teeth and even with his attention divided he was taking advantage of it. Working her way down she slipped. Instantly the paw was jerked from her mouth and in a desperate act she snapped down on where she thought it would withdraw to. Luck held and she clamped firmly on his footpad. It was rough and bony, but it was part of his leg. Muster all her muscle power she forced her mandible up as hard as it would go. There was a sickening cracking sound as the delicate bones in her opponent's foot snapped and splintered.
            Jamis backed up feeling the slick blood run down her back and feeling it underfoot. Surveying her damage to the other she nodded in grim satisfaction. His paw had been mangled beyond repair and it was held limply just above the ground. Looking to the Houndoom’s face, however, she was shocked. A wide grimace of joyful pain covered his narrow muzzle making it clear he approved of her move.
            With surprising speed for his injury he took her by the throat, flipped her over to the ground, and pinned her with a clawed paw pressing heavily against her windpipe. A leer covered his canine features and his tail switched proudly. Evidently he had thought her a pleasant enough challenge.
            "Too bad we are not on the same side. You are a good fighter." He panted and increased the pressure. She struggled, but without oxygen her body was slowly failing. She was dizzy and disoriented with fear and things began getting fuzzy around the edges of her vision. Then all was black.
            Mirei almost dove forward to save her sister and only the press of bodies around her served to remind her not to interfere. She watched anxiously knowing she could do nothing and hoping that the Houndoom wouldn't kill Jamis. That would be a bitter lose.
            "Stop! I give up." Mirei then cried. She could take it no long. The last time she had attempted to give herself in exchange for the safety of another had failed. However, she could see no other way to go about it. Except for that one…, but she refused to even consider using her full power. It was liable to spin out of her grasp and turn on those she wanted to protect.
            "You can't." Aqua whispered shaking beside her. The water type had pressed herself hard against her larger sister. "If you go, then I go."
            "Fine." The Houndoom leader barked in amusement, "You all go and she stays. Maybe she wakes up, maybe not."
            "No, wait just a moment here!" Loki yelped unwilling to go anywhere and Blitz sent him sprawling. The shove had not been hard, however, it had caught the Flareon off balance. He looked up shocked at the attack on his person, but was silent.
            The group under Houndoom's precise rule rounded the small group up with just a few token protests. Most of the fight had gone out of them when Jamis was unable to get out from under the deadly grasp.
            Blitz walked up to his brother and held out a paw murmuring, "Sorry bro, but I didn't have a choice. Go with the flow, okay?"
            Loki took his paw in numb amazement. Blitz, just for that moment there, had sounded like his old self. The kind of older brother who acted with disregard for his own safety to stop the younger. And he had apologized as well.
