Chapter 7- The
One
Fern
Pokemon -
Bulbasaur level 10
Murkrow
level 8
"Your pokemon are fighting fit! We hope to see you
again," recited Nurse Joy.
Fern sent out her pokemon. "Well, we're finally
here. What do you want to do?"
"Mukrow Murk" (Let's train!)
"Bulba!" (Yeah!)
Fern grinned. "Training it is. Back to route
30!"

Flare
Pokemon -
Cyndaquil level 9
Pidgey level 6
Yes, Flare. You're probably wondering what happened
to him. Well, even if you aren't here he is;
Flare struggled furiously. He hurt all over. The
huge pokemon didn't let go. Where was he being taken? To a nest full of hungry
baby Aerodactyls? Hopefully not.
Flare stopped struggling. There was no point. If he
was going to die, he might as well enjoy this moment. He couldn't escape anyway.
Flare looked down. Cherrygrove had disappeared, and Ecruteak was to his left.
the ground beneath him was turning rocky and Mountain-like.
Flare spread his arms and pretended he was flying.
It was quite fun, but he might have enjoyed it more if he wasn't so worried.
Flare was usually worried. Perhaps he got it from
his mother, who was always fussing. The only times he wasn't worried was- well,
sometimes something seemed to take over him. It was weird.
The Aerodactyl made signs of landing on a mountain.
Flare shivered in the sudden cold. Maybe he could escape when the dragon put him
down on a ledge/ nest.
Flare thought of Fern. Where was she now? Was she
alright? Maybe another Areodactyl had picked her up too. Flare twisted round to
scan the skies. Apart from the occasional Pidgey/ Pidgeotto there was nothing.
Flare sighed and turned his head round the right way.
The mountain suddenly loomed up in front of him.
Flare suddenly realised how high up he was. Now, instead of struggling, Flare
hung on to the Areodactyl tightly, and shut his eyes.
He felt the pokemon land. His feet touched solid
ground, and he stumbled in suprise. Only when the talons released him did Flare
realise how tightly he had been held. He cried out in pain, and then opened his
eyes.
"Honestly, how tight did you hold him? Look at him
now, he's bleeding all over," said a man's voice.
Flare blinked. He was sitting on the top of a
flat-topped mountain. The view was just as if he was still flying. He turned, to
see where the voice came from.
A man, still in his twenties, Flare supposed, was
scolding the giant dragon like a mother scolds a naughty child. A Pikachu sat
beside him.
Flare blinked again. It was- it was Ash Ketchum!
The strongest trainer in the world. (He was so strong there was also a
sub-champion position in the league, as no-one could ever defeat Ash. If they
gained that position, they could challenge Ash and try to claim victory.)
Flare just stared, and absent-mindedly wondered if
he'd won a competion of some sort, to meet the greatest trainer of all time.
Probably not. The only competion he'd ever entered was when he was six to---
well, that was private.
Ash seemed to sense Flare's staring and turned
around. Flare looked away and tried to look as though being captured by a giant
dragon, taken to Mount Silver and meeting Ash Ketchum was something that
happened every day.
Ash walked over to him. "I'm Ash Ketchum, as you
may know. Who are you?"
Flare looked confused. "I'm Flare. But if you don't
even know who I am, why did your pokemon drag me here?"
Ash laughed. "First, Areodactyl is not my pokemon.
He is wild. Second, He can find a Champion by sight. He found me."
Flare waited. "What? Why am I here
then?"
"Isn't it obvious?" asked Ash, and when Flare still
looked blank, "No? Well, the reason you are here, Flare, is because Aerodactyl
found you as a great trainer."
Flare did a double take. "So-?" he said, as if he
already knew what was coming next.
Ash sighed. "So, you are here because Aerodactyl
has chosen you to be the next Champion after me. Now, both of us are going to
teach you to be the greatest trainer in the world. Let's get you cleaned
up."

Fern
Pokemon:
Bulbasaur level 10:
Murkrow level
9
Fern frowned. The Bellsprout she had just caught
didn't seem to like her or her pokemon.
'Oh well,' she thought, 'Everyone takes a while to
settle in.'
But Bellsprout had also refused to listen to Fern.
"That's strange," said Fern to Bulbasaur,
"Bellsprout doesn't listen to me, but every pokemon under level ten
should."
"Bulb bulba bulbasaur saur bul." (Use the pokedex
to find out what level it is.)
"Great idea!" said Fern. She pointed it at the
Bellsprout who was showing off in front of Murkrow, who in turn was
yawning.
*BEEP* Bellsprout, the sprout pokemon. Uses
sunlight to make food and energy, but has to root into the ground while doing
this. *BEEP* level 6.
"That's strange. I--"
*BEEP* Sometimes newly-caught pokemon can be
jealous of other pokemon of the same type/s. *BEEP*
"Oh, so that's it." said Fern, turning off the
pokdex. To Bellsprout; "You're just jealous of Bulbasaur, yes?"
"Bel, Sprout bel, bel." (No, of course not.) She
looked sideways at Bulbasaur when saying this.
"Err... so how do I solve this? Any ideas
guys?"
"Bellsprout spout Bell," (Get rid of him,) said
Bellsprout pointing at Bulbasaur, at the same time Bulbasaur said;
"Bulba Bulbasaur," (Get rid of her,) pointing at
Bellsprout.
Fern sighed. "I'm not getting rid of him.
Bellsprout, if you don't want to stay here, do you want another
trainer?"
"Bellsprout bel bellsprout sprout sprout bel
bellsprout?" (So you'll get rid of me but not him then?), but she looked
slightly happy at the thought.
Fern got angry at this. "If you are going to behave
like that, then yes, I will."
"Bulbasaur bulba bulba zour!" (Then it's all
settled then!)
Fern sighed. "C'mon then. There must be someone who
wants a Bellsprout!" She returned the pokemon to their balls, and ran to the
city.
***
"Are you sure you don't want a
Bellsprout?"
Yet another trainer shook their head and walked
away. Fern thought, 'Well, it's not like anyone would want a Bellsprout when
there are hundreds outside in Route---'
"Do you have a female Bellsprout I can have? I'll
give you my Onix," a small boy pleaded to a passing trainer.
Fern decided it would be best to forget the thought
she had had a few moments ago, and ran to the boy.
"Do you have a female Bellsprout you could give
me?" asked the boy.
"Yes, I have!" replied Fern.
"Alright! I have a trading machine back in my
house. Do you mind rock pokemon?" The boy jabbed a finger back at a building
behind him.
Fern followed him, and put Bellsprout's ball on the
trade machine. The boy said; "My name is Cris. I'm giving you an Onix in return
for the Bellsprout."
Fern nodded and watched as Chris put a pokeball on
the trade machine too. Fern was used to these, since her dad's brother, Bill,
ran a trading company. She watched while the Onix's shape merged with the
Bellsprout's and settled in the pokeball on her side.
"Thanks a bunch," said Chris, "I've always wanted a
girl Bellsprout for my team, since I reckon females have a higher special than
males. I suppose it's just a hunch, but, since I only ever get males, I won't
know. Onix won't listen to me. I hope you won't mind. Thanks
again."
He was polite, but very rushed, Fern
noticed.
"Hey, don't mention it," said Fern, "I myself like
the males, since they have a higher attack."
"Good thing the Onix is a male then," Chris said
thoughtfully, "But it is only level 6. That OK?"
"So's the Bellsprout. Well, I'm off the do some
training. See ya, and take care of it!"
"I will!" said Cris, as Fern walked
away.
Fern walked back to route 30 once again, weighing
the pokeball in her hands. She decided to meet her new pokemon. "Onix!" she
called
The giant rock snake emerged. It was taller than
Fern expected.
"HEL-LO? ONIX? I'M YOUR NEW TRAINER, FERN. IT'S A
PLEASURE TO MEET YOU," Fern yelled.
The giant pokemon looked down at Fern, and lowered
its neck so it was at eye level with Fern.
"Onix, nix nix on. Nix onix nix." (Yes, I know. You
don't have to shout.)
Fern blushed slightly. "So, erm, do you want to
meet the other two guys?"
"Onix nix onix." (Go on then.)
"OK, this is Bulbasaur..."
"Bulba!" (Hi!)
"...and this is Murkrow."
"Murkrow krow murk." (Nice to meet
you.)
"Well, anyway, do you guys want to do some
training?"
"Bulba! saur Bulba."
}
"Nix! onix
onix." }
Yeah! C'mon then!
"Krow! murk murkrow." }
"Let's go then! But first I have to call back you
guys. If we meet a trainer it will give away our position for battle." said
Fern.
She called back her pokemon and set out to the
denser part of the route. She trained with her pokemon for several hours until
all had grown at least one level, and no trainers had bothered them. The sun
slipped lower in the sky, and Fern returned to the pokemon centre.
Nurse Joy healed her pokemon, and let them and Fern
stay over night. Fern collapsed on her soft bed, and promptly fell asleep. It
had been a long day.
