“Good grief,” Kalty complained to her companion, a little red fox like creature. “You’d think there was at least some food for us.”

The pokémon beside her, which was a young female vulpix, nodded and barked agreement. Kalty looked down and smoothed out the tiny kinks in the six tails of her pokémon, stroking each one fondly, using her other hand to scratch the ears. The vulpix purred pleasure and licked Kalty’s hand, causing her to giggle.

“Bitira, we need to move on,” Kalty protested sarcastically, “even I need a rest from your charm every now and then.” To this Bitira snorted and trotted off toward the table that stood in the courtyard they were in.

:Not even a biscuit:

“Nothing? The convention must’ve not lasted long. I was hoping we could make the last part where they served the food.” Kalty commented with a shrug.

:Humans can be selfish:

“True, Bit, but not always. And besides, there were pokemon present at this thing too.” the girl replied with a shake of her head, making her raven-colored hair sparkle in the late morning sunshine. She was dressed plainly, wearing sneakers, jeans, and a plain forest green tank top. On her back was a small purple bag, and around her neck hung a thick black cord that supported a small pokéball, which rested lightly on her chest. Her hair was a deep black, silky and long, and was tied back in a high ponytail. When a breeze swept over her, the hair would seem to dance like ocean waves. Her amber eyes shone with friendliness and curiosity. Her pokémon, Bitira, was still a young kit. She was a typical vulpix, except she too, had amber eyes.

:Why do you always insist on being at events at the last minute?: Bitira mindspoke to Kalty angrily, :I personally would like to get to eat something:

“Oh, stop your whining. If we had gotten to this particular Pokémon Party on time, they would’ve gotten us.”

:Oh, I know that. But it still isn’t wonderful to be in hiding for your entire life. When will we be able to get some food-and maybe some friends?:

Kalty sighed and looked off into the distant sky, watching the midday clouds roll lazily across the smoky blue. The sun hung proudly in the air, sending its strong rays in all directions as it shed light upon all that was exposed. A light breeze ruffled the girl’s hair, and Kalty gladly let it cool her body and refresh her mind. Kalty let her stiffened shoulders hang loose, let her eyelids droop heavily over her tired eyes, and thought about absolutely nothing. She let relaxation sink into her, letting it start in her feet and rise, like fire, up to her temples. She was entirely in peace; not a single thought disturbed her troubled mind.

Kalty suddenly let out a piercing yelp.

:Stop that: commanded Bitira, :You almost let It happen again:

“Right.” Kalty murmured with relief, “What would I ever do without you…”

:Yay!: Bitira exclaimed, yipping with excitement, :We’re going to battle someone!:

“Humph,” Kalty snorted stubbornly, “That’s only because I don’t want you to get lazy.” Kalty grinned slyly and laughed.

:Of all the --: Bitira grumbled, letting her voice trail off. Kalty laughed again.

“We are to be ready by three, Bit,” explained Kalty, holding her hand over her mouth to stop the flow of laughter, “and we’re to meet at the Pokémon Center in Celadon.” She giggled, still visualizing Bit’s angry face. She bent over and ran her hand through the curls on the vulpix kit’s head, turning it into a chaotic mess of fur. Bitira gave in and let her friend drag her gentle fingers all over her head. “That gives us an hour,” she concluded, straightening.

:More: Bitira pleaded, rubbing her black nose fondly into Kalty’s knee. Kalty laughed again but responded, “Sorry, but we’ve got to practice.”

“I hope you’re ready to take on the best!” taunted the cocky trainer, closing his eyes with arrogance. He tossed a inactivated pokéball in one hand and pretended to be checking his other one for dirtiness. His blond hair slipped in front of his eyes but he pretended not to notice.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” Kalty retorted, showing plainly that she hadn’t cared, “I wanted to battle you, not to be aggravated by your insufferable ego.” To this Bitira chuckled her agreement and barked.

The trainer glared at her but smiled. “Fine,” he muttered darkly, “You’ll see, you can’t beat me!” He took the pokéball in his hand, looked at Kalty as if he would throw it at her face, and then finally tossed it into the air. Kalty had watched this process coolly, and now she grinned mischievously. “Go, Bit,” she whispered so only the vulpix could hear, “Show him that you’re no magikarp.” The kit growled softly and twitched her ears, saying :He should’ve never thought that in the first place:

“Vul.” Bitira snarled aloud proudly, spreading her paws over the ground and lowering her head to get prepared for the battle. The other trainer’s pokéball had already opened to release a mareep at the perfect distance away from Bitira, making boundaries for the improvised battlefield. It bleated and made small sparks cackle around its tail. The trainer smirked smugly. Kalty just continued to stare at him coolly.

“Get ‘em mareep!” he bellowed viciously, “Thunder attack!” To himself he added quietly, “Why do these two sound and look like something I recognize?”

The mareep ran up to Bitira to obey, but it had no chance to hit, for the vulpix had evaded the electric pokémon and stood in the same position as before. Several times this course of action occurred.

This caused some confusion for the trainer, for he hadn’t heard any directions come from Kalty. Mareep waited for instructions, though it received none. The trainer had paused, unsure of what to do, when suddenly a huge ball of fire hit the mareep full force. Kalty jumped up with a gleeful shout. Bitira landed next to her, seemingly coming from somewhere in the sky.

“What the-,” the blond boy cried with surprise as his defeated mareep fell in a heap a few feet from him, “Hey, that’s not fair!”

“How so?” Kalty asked casually, giving Bitira a loving hug, “I won, you lost. In no way have I cheated.” Bitira scratched her ears with her hind leg, mildly amused at the conversation at hand. She yawned and let her dangerously sharp teeth glint in the sunlight. Kalty pulled a treat from her pack that she had placed on the ground during the battle, and tossed it to Bitira, who promptly gulped it down appreciatively. :I think he’s gonna cry: the vulpix chortled.

“But you never commanded your pokémon! You had to have cheated; it knew what you wanted! And it isn’t even psychic! ” the trainer was now shaking. “Return, mareep,” he said hotly, letting the red beam of light bring back his pokémon. He pointed his finger at Kalty accusingly, and before she could reply, he shrieked, “You’re the witch! Now I know where I’ve seen you!”

Bitira growled angrily as Kalty tried to keep her tears from falling. The girl picked up her pack and ran into the forest, hair flying wildly behind her. Bitira did not follow. She ran up to the trainer, pushed him over before he could think to do anything, and snarled deeply from her throat. She opened her jaws to reveal a waiting ball of flame, showing him what she would do if he moved. The trainer whimpered and said to her, “I’m sorry!” She pinned him down for another few seconds before racing off after Kalty, disappearing before the stunned trainer’s eyes.

Kalty ran, jumping over fallen logs and racing through the brush. A few tears flew from her face as she past trees of various sizes. When she came to a clearing, she slowed and stopped. She let her body slump to the ground, allowing sobs to come out from her mouth. Her amber eyes filled with tears, but they didn’t stay that way for long before the drops streamed down her cheeks. Her hair kept falling down onto her face, so it too, became wet. “I am not a witch!” she managed to moan through her weeping, “Why does everyone think that?”

:I don’t think you’re a witch. In fact, I know that you’re not a witch. Don’t be silly now, just because another brainless idiot accuses you:

“Bit, I’m not being silly. Maybe people are right. Maybe I am a witch.” Kalty replied sadly without lifting her head.

:I know you’re not a witch! I know more about you than you do, so stop saying that! Just because you are different, it doesn’t mean that you’re a witch:

“I just don’t know anymore. Or care. Oh, Bit, let’s just run away and never come near civilization again.” the girl said quietly, her sobs lessening.

:Don’t be silly! If you are just going to run away from your fears all the time, then your preordained role in life will be destroyed. And stop calling me ‘Bit.’ I am no ‘Bit’:

Kalty looked up quickly at these last words, but no one was there.

Who is this mysterious speaker that gave hope to Kalty? And is Kalty a witch or what?

How is it so far? Confusing? Good! That’s the way I want it to be! You’ll find out later about Kalty and Bitira. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE R+R!!!! ~Fablex~
