Chapter 5

The trees crowded together. The topmost branches covered the sky, while the ground was overflowing with shrubberies and other plants. Bulbasaur was running around playfully, leaping over fallen branches and rolling through sweet smelling flowers, while his trainer Isaac walked along the road that ran down the middle of the plant-life. He smiled as he watched Bulbasaur play. *Good to see that he is feeling better* he mused to himself. *I’d hate to think that he would be put off battling other Pokemon…*

His thoughts were interrupted when he noticed a yellow lump fall out of a tree to the side of him. Bulbasaur noticed this also and walked over to it, sniffing curiously.

“Kakuna!” the lump cried. Bulbasaur jumped back in surprise as the lump slowly rocked back and forth before finally splitting down the middle. Isaac and Bulbasaur watched in fascination as a burst of white light streamed out of the split, followed by a growing mould of light in the middle. The light suddenly vanished and sitting there on top of the now split shell was a bee-like Pokemon, gently flapping its wings in order to dry them out. Isaac pulled out his Pokedex, not taking his eyes off the Pokemon for a second, and aimed it at the creature that sat there. The Pokedex beeped and the bee-like Pokemon appeared on the screen.

“Beedrill, the Bee Pokemon,” the electronic voice explained. “The evolved form of Kakuna. A Poison and Bug type Pokemon. They are usually found in swarms around large forest areas. It’s Twineedle and Pin Missile attacks are very formidable. Approach with caution. When there is one Beedrill by itself, there is sure to be more to follow.”

“Beedrill huh?” Isaac said, putting the Pokedex back into his pocket. “What do you reckon Bulbasaur? Do you think you can handle it?”

“Bulba…” Bulbasaur replied nervously. It didn’t look too determined.

“Well, if you don’t want to we can always try finding something easier,” Isaac told him. “I wouldn’t want to take that Beedrill on at the moment either.”

“Bulbasaur,” the plant Pokemon nodded. They both walked past the Beedrill while it continued to dry its wings. Pretty soon it was out of their sight.

Isaac and Bulbasaur continued to stroll along the winding path that now led them through the trees and shrubs. After a while a large pond came into the clearing. Long reeds poked out of the water and lily pads were spread across the top. Isaac knelt down and scooped out a hand full of water to wash his face. *I can’t believe it* he thought as he rubbed his face with the cool liquid. *2 hours of walking and I still haven’t seen any other Pokemon. Not even a Caterpie. Maybe I should’ve tried to catch that Beedrill…”

A small jet of water flying out of the pond and hitting him in the eye suddenly interrupted his thoughts.

“AHH!!! What the hell?” he cried. Furiously rubbing his now stinging eye, Isaac stood up and stared into the pond. Another jet of water came out and got him in the chest.

“What the… What’s the heck’s in that pond?” he wondered out loud. Bulbasaur walked over and stared into the water curiously. A small dark shadow was swimming close to the surface. Bulbasaur watched with interest, until he was hit in the face by another squirt of water.

“Bulba!” he cried and started wiping his eyes with his vines. Bulbasaur looked up again and saw the shadow still swimming about.

“Hey Bulbasaur, can you see where the water’s coming from,” Isaac asked, walking over to his Pokemons side.

“Saurrrr…” the plant Pokemon growled. Its vines suddenly shot out into the pond, directly at the shadow that hid under the surface and tightly wrapped around it. The thing began splashing around as Bulbasaur tried to haul it out of the water.

“That’s it Bulbasaur, keep at it,” encouraged Isaac. *For all we know it might be a Pokemon* he thought excitedly.

Bulbasaur struggled for a few seconds before finally thrusting his vines out of the pond. A small blue creature was wrapped up within them and was released while in mid air. It fell heavily to the ground and tried to pick itself up. When it turned around to face its attacker Isaac noticed that it had no arms and a big swirl on its belly. Pulling out his Pokedex, he aimed it at the small aquatic Pokemon for a quick description.

“Poliwag,” the machine beeped. “The tadpole Pokemon. It is of the water type category. Commonly found in ponds and streams, it has a large swirl on its middle that it retains during evolution. The swirl allows it to perform the Hypnosis attack, which it uses to escape from intruders.”

“All right,” Isaac exclaimed. “That would definitely be a good Pokemon to add to my team.” The Poliwag glared at the pair of intruders and then eyed off Bulbasaur menacingly.

“Poliiii…” it growled. Bulbasaur returned its glare and growled back.

“Are you ready Bulbasaur? I know you can take this little squirt on,” exclaimed Isaac. Bulbasaur growled with approval and moved forward to take on the little Poliwag.
