Prologue

Ian MacCormic played the flash lights beam across the ground as he headed for the food shed. He walked quickly so he could get the food dishes filled for the Labs pokemon, and he could get to the grooming part. At nine and a half, Ian had more knowledge of pokemon then many who lived in Littleroot town, except the researchers at the lab where he helped out. His long shoulder length red hair was whipped by a breeze, and he was forced to use a hand to keep dust and dirt from going into his bright blue eyes. His parents had gone to a gathering with his older sister and he was now in the care of the lab. He loved the lab, and caring for all the pokemon. He had done this task since he was seven, and knew that he wanted to work with pokemon his whole life.

He grinned as turned the corner of the building and then stopped dead in his tracks. Directly in front of him, his flash light beam caught the unmistakable body of a pokemon. He approached slowly, and soon saw more. Seven more to be precise. Brown fur, with a ruff around the neck. He recognised them as eevee. All of them were pretty beat up and showed signs of a fight, three were still concious and one of them was on her feet growling at Ian.

Now Ian was scared. Five downed eevee, three up but heavily injured and one was growling. But that wasn't what scared him. What was scaring him was the thought of the pokemon that had fought them might still be around. He played the light around the area and saw a downed body of an seviper, and that explained it all. The eevee were poisoned, but had managed to knock out the seviper. He looked back to the growling eevee and put on his kindest smile. He had to get them to some treatment or they would all die. He noted that though the five were down, they were still breathing.

"Easy," He began in a soft tone, going down to one knee. "I'm not going to hurt you, girl." He closed his eyes briefly and when he opened them he saw the eevee repeat the gesture. "Let me get you some medicine, to help you." He told her, and his eyes opened wide as she fell over onto the ground.

"Professor Birch, Lenny, Jack," He yelled out into the pre dawn light. "Anybody."

"What's wrong, Ian?" Came Birch's voice from the direction of the lab.

"Eight eevee are here," he called back. "Poisoned by a Seviper. It's out but these eevee are in a really bad way. right near the entrance to the food storage building."

"Be there in a moment." Birch replied. "I'll bring antidotes and super potions."

"And bring a lab ball for that seviper, please." He added to the darkness.

He moved closer to the eevee and lifted the unconscious ones, placing them next to each other. He watched as the two remaining concious ones moved over next to the ones he had laid down. He blinked his eyes at the two of them, smiling while he did so.

"Your a smart group." He told them in a soft voice, then he heard the sound of footsteps coming quickly. "Slowly, please, they're nervous." And to the eevee, "Easy there, it's only somebody bringing you some medicine."

"I am right behind you, Ian." The professor told him. "Reach back and you can take the antidotes and potions."

He did so and felt a cloth bag which he brought around to the front. Inside were two smaller bags, one marked potions, the other antidotes. He brought the antidotes out first. He sprayed one onto the body of one of the eevee, before turning a small dial on the spray nozzle and placing it in the mouth of the pokemon. He repeated the procedure for all the remaining seven of them. Then he gave each a potion. Meanwhile, he saw, out of the corner of his eye, professor Birch throw the lab ball at the seviper.

He paid the seviper no heed. Only a legendary could resist a lab ball, which was why they were not sold or given away. Instead, he focused on the eevee. He sprayed each with the potion spray, making sure to cover the wounds that they had gotten with the spray. He kept up a soft conversation to the two who remained awake to keep them calm. Finished, he turned to the professor.

"Where should I put them?" He asked the man.

"Well, since you are staying here for a few weeks while your parents are away with your older sister." Birch answered. "How about we put eight cushions on the front porch of one of the guest cabins. You can stay in there instead of the lab and you can take care of them at the same time."

"Great." Ian smiled.

He took a wheelbarrow and spread a couple of food sacks in the bottom of it before he put one half full sack in too. Then he lifted each of the now sleeping eevee and placed them in the makeshift transport. Birch led the way to one of the three cabins and Ian followed, humming to the pokemon to keep them calm. Soon he had all eight, one to a cushion, on the sheltered porch, and placed a bowl of food and water near each of them, before he went on his normal rounds.

Later that evening he came back to the cabin only to see all eight cushions empty. Empty too were the food and water bowls he had left for them. He felt a slight pang at that. He had hoped that they would stay a little while. Slightly saddened, he filled the food and water bowls, just in case, before going to the lab for dinner. Birch and some of the assistants noticed that Ian wasn't his usually happy self and asked. He told them what had happened, and was told, that these were wild pokemon. He was also praised for his leaving the bowls out and refilling them. Birch told him that they may come back and could probably use the food.

He went to the cabin, noting that none of the food was touched and couldn't help but feel a bit saddened. He took a quick shower and then climbed into bed pulling a sheet over himself. A single tear rolled out of the corner of his eye and he soon felt the call of sleep.

In the morning he woke, dressed, and made ready to feed the pokemon. As he left the door of the cabin he saw a brown fur ball on each of the cushions, and he smiled. The food dishes were half filled, and he topped them off, doing the same to the water dishes.

On the fourth night, after he had showered and climbed into bed, he was woken by a sound. He saw the open window, and remembered that he had forgotten to close it. Just as he was getting ready to get out of bed to do so, he felt a weight on him, then another, and another. He felt this weight move up his legs and settle on his sheet covered body just at the small of his back. Another came to rest next to his left hip, while a third settled next to his right hip. He felt more weight on him, and felt a soft furry bundle settle near the back of his neck at the back of his head.

"Eee, eee, vee." A voice uttered.

Ian realized that the eevee were now in his bed and sleeping with him. He fell asleep surrounded by eight soft brown furred creatures.
