...And so, with swift speed John hurled himself over to Julie and released Flame. Like a human-shield, John huddled over Julie while Flame blasted blazing embers at the Beedrills swarming by them. Soon the Beedrills headed back to their nests and hives to rest for the night. John returned Flame back to his pokeball, and Julie had to catch her breath. “Th-that was a close one.” She could barely say. “You could say that again.” John replied and helped her up to her feet, “Let’s head to Pewter Citys Pokemon Center to rest for the night.” When John and Julie arrived at the Pokemon Center, John played pokemon- foosball against some other kids and Julie tried to get some sleep in the back room where other trainers were also resting. “John, time to get up.” John heard Julie say. John was just getting up, and remembered that he spent the night at the Pokemon Center of Pewter City. “A few more minutes Julie, ugh…” John replied and rolled over on his side, “This is the best sleep I’ve had in a long time.” “But John, don’t you want to face Brock while it’s still early?” Julie asked and sat on an end of his bed. “Brock? Who’s Brock?” “You don’t know Brock, the Gym Leader of this city?” Julie asked. “Nope, is he good?” “He’s a Gym Leader!” Julie cried, “Of course he’s good!” “Ok, I’ll get up then.” John said and arched himself up and stretched. “That’s more like it! I’ll be waiting for you in the main lobby.” Julie responded and began to walk towards the lobby of the Pokemon Center. In a few minutes, John was fully dressed and found Julie in the lobby chatting with other trainers. “Well, here he comes, I gotta go now!” Julie finished. “Call me!” The male trainer replied and waved to her as John and Julie left the Pokemon Center. “Who was that?” John asked as they headed to Pewter Gym. “Oh just some trainer.” Julie giggled. “Whatever, it looks like we’re here.” John stated, “That was pretty quick.” “It’s common for Pokemon Gyms to be located next to a Pokemon Center because of the constant injuries.” “Well that’s pleasant, I guess.” John replied as they walked inside. The gym was pretty barren, and Brock was in walking range. “It’s less elaborate then I thought it would be.” Julie said as she examined the small gym. The two of them proceeded to Brock, and right before John could step up to the gym leader, another trainer walked over to him. “Ha, you wanna face Brock eh?” The trainer asked, “Well you’ll have to beat me first!” “What, can’t we put this off for some other time?! John exclaimed, “I mean I need to face Brock like right now!” The trainer sent out a Sandshrew ignoring every word that came out of Johns mouth. “Ok, so it’s gonna be like that huh?” John questioned. “John, you go up to Brock, I’ll face this trainer for you.” Julie told him and released Bulby from her pokeball. “You’d do that for me?” John asked and turned to Julie. “Uh-yeah…It’s no biggie, John, that’s what friends are for right?” Julie said, and John nodded and walked over to Brock. John readied a pokeball at his side. “Ah, second trainer of the day.” Brock stated with his arms crossed, “I hope you’re not as good as that last trainer I faced!” “No way…Do you get his name?” John asked. “I think he was Jim or somethin’.” Brock replied with his squinty-like eyes, “No, it was Jack! He said he was from Pallet Town.” “So he did come by here.” John mumbled. “I’m ready when you are.” Brock yawned, “Wanna make a small wager on this battle. You know, it sort of makes it more interesting.” “Ok, I’m in then.” John agreed, “What kind of wager anyways?” “Well if you win, you still get your Boulder Badge, but you get double prize money.” Brock told him. “Ok, sounds good to me!” John exclaimed. “But wait, I’m not done yet!” Brock grinned, “If I win though, I take your girlfriend over there on a little date!” “Girlfriend-huh?” John wondered and scratched the side of his head, “I don’t have a~ oh wait! You mean Julie?” “What is it John?” Julie asked as she walked over. “Nothing Julie, Brock let’s get on with the battle!” John said and grabbed a pokeball from his belt. “The wager is still good though, you already agreed!” Brock cackled and released his first pokemon, Geodude. John sent out his Mankey, nicknamed Mighty to battle against the Geodude. “This one’s for you.” Brock remarked and pointed to Julie, “Geodude, Defense Curl!” Brocks Geodude curled up in a defensive position as Mighty used its Karate Chop, which did critical damage. “Stay on your toes Mighty, you’re looking great!” John commented, “Remember that form I showed you!” “Geodude, Rock Throw!” Brock commanded, and his Geodude gathered rocks to toss at Mighty. Though the large rocks hurled towards Mighty almost made him loose his footing, Mighty still managed to dodge each rock. “Now Mighty, a scratch should do!” John called out to his Mankey. Mighty flung out his sharp nails and began slashing and scratching away at the Geodude making it faint. “Not bad, let’s see if you can handle this next one!” Brock exclaimed and released his large and powerful Onix. The rock-snake pokemon curled around Mighty, continuing to constrict him. “Mighty, try to fight it!” John said as his Mankey was lost in the massive boulder pokemon, “This isn’t looking too good!” Soon, Brocks Onix released Mighty from its devasting grip. “Ha, not many pokemon are able to withstand the might of my Onixes constrict.” Brock bragged, “You can withdraw now…but of course I’ll be taking your girl!” Mighty came crawling towards Johns leg, in complete fear. He trembled and wrapped himself around Johns leg. “C’mon Mighty, you can take that brute!” John told him, “I didn’t nickname you Mighty because you’re a coward! So that Onix whacha’ got, for my sake at least!” Johns motivational words seemed to help Mighty back to his feet. “Hmm, so your Mankey wants more ehh?” Brock blubbered, “Ok, this time Onix, use Bide.” Brocks Onix poised itself up in the air and seemed to be taking energy. “Great, Mighty now’s your chance! Hit it with a Low Kick!” Mighty dashed over to the Onix and kicked underneath its support. Brocks Onix nearly tripped over the attack and banged against the wall, leaving a large indent. “I guess I’ll have to get that fixed on my spare time.” Brock mumbled, “Continue doing what you do Onix.” Mighty gave it another low kick, and this time Brocks Onix fell to the ground! Pieces of gravel blasted towards John and Julie as the Onix collided to the ground. “Alright Mighty, that’s what I like ta see!” John exclaimed and jumped up. “Oh this match is far from over John!” Brock exclaimed as Onix managed to lift itself up from the ground. As soon as Brock said those words, Onix opened its mouth and aimed at Mighty. “What’s it doing?” John asked Julie. “Now Onix, release your energy!!!” A beam of power and light came blasting towards Mighty, blasting Mighty to the other end of the gym! Mighty struggled to raise itself back up, yet continued to repetively fall back down. “Come on Mighty, get up!” John yelled. “John, you should probably switch pokemon, I don’t think you should push your pokemon that hard.” Julie advised him. “Julie, I know what I’m doing, I know when to stop.” John replied. “You’re that dedicated huh?” Brock commented, “That’s kinda interesting.” As soon as Mighty got back up, Onix was more than ready to pummel him back against the wall. When Onix came charging, it already had stored energy when Mighty was trying to get up. Mighty dashed straightforward to Onix and dived for its head. “Mighty, what’re you doing?!” John shouted, but Mighty had already dived into the beam of power. Chunks of the ceiling began to break apart and fall because of the power of the fierce collision of attacks. When everything cleared back up again, Mighty was left standing. John jumped up with glee and hugged his Mankey. “Omigosh, you freakin’ did it!” John exclaimed as he continued hugging and squeezing Mighty. “John, I’m so glad you won.” Julie commented and walked over to him and Mighty. Mighty smiled and fell back to the floor, so John returned him back to his pokeball. And so, John left Pewter City Gym with a Boulder Badge as well as his well-earned grand prize double prize money. “Wait a minute, Julie, don’t you have to battle Brock too?” John asked as they began heading down the Route to Mt. Moon. “Nope, Professor Oak already gave me all the badges I need for extra protection and what-not.” Julie smiled, “Isn’t that great.” “Seems like Oak takes a lot of interest in you, heh-heh.” Julie friendly pushed him and John laughed while they continued down their trail to the next destination.
