Early the next mourning, Julie was already up and just shaken John out of bed. “Mourning John, are you ready for Brock?” Julie asked. “What, do I want to smoke rocks?” John asked as he yawned and got up from his portable bed, “Oh, sorry. Brock-who?” “Brock, the gym leader of this city.” Julie added on, “I’m not sure what type of pokemon he has, so you should begin training Flame to get stronger.” “But it’s so early in the mourning Julie…” “Jack has already left and is probably battling Brock as we speak.” “Ok, let’s go then!” John trained his pidgey and rattata as hard as Flame. John didn’t know what leveled pokemon he’d be going against, so he trained them all to level ten. “There that should be enough.” John stated, “Let’s head back to Pewter City now.” John was pumped and ready for Brock. He bravely entered the gym with Julie at his side. Brock was standing a few feet away from him and John dashed forward. Julie tried stopping him from running because there was a trainer to the left side of him. It was too late, and John was forced to fight the trainer. He wore camper-like clothes and grinned at John. “Ha, you’re light-years away from facing Brock! You’ll have to get through me first!” the trainer exclaimed. “Oh, that’s just great, another punk-trainer for me to face.” John taunted, “Let’s get this over with quickly ok.” While they began to battle, Julie walked around them and faced Brock with Bulby. The camper-trainer sent out a sandshrew and John of course sent out Flame. “Careful Flame, it looks tough. “John said, “Use your scratch!” Sandshrew was faster than Flame and dodged Flames attack by rolling to the side. “Sand-attack!” Sandshrew blew sand in Flames eyes which temporarily blinded him. Then sandshrew scratched Flame as Flame winced while rubbing his eyes. Meanwhile, Brocks Onix lunges towards Bulby. The massive rock-snake pokemon is too much for the little bulbasaur, but something seemed different about Bulby. “Impossible, that sort of attack would usually take out any type of pokemon!” Brock yelled. In the middle of the battle, Bulby seemed to be transforming. “What’s going on Bulby?” Julie asked and began to take notes, “She must be evolving, but this early?” Bulby evolved into an Ivysaur, but she still was a little weak from the devastating blow. “Finish off Brocks Onix with a vine whip Bulby!” Julie yelled, and Bulby did just that as she lashed her vines at Onix. Onix fainted and Julie yelled with joy as Brock handed her the Boulder badge and her prize money. Right after that, John finished his battle with the other trainer. “By the way, light years isn’t a measure of time, it’s a measure of distance.” The trainer says as he returns his fainted pokemon. “Yeah whatever, I’m ready to face Brock!” John headed over to Brock and saw him on one knee. “Julie, please, will you go out with me?” Brock asked, “I’ll take you anywhere you want to go, just name it!” “Um, excuse me Brock, but I’m here and ready to battle you!” John exclaimed. Brock glanced at John and then back at Julie again. “Yeah well that can wait kid, I’m busy right now.” Brock replied and kissed Julies hand just as Jack did back at the lab, “As I was saying, Julie will you please go out with me?” “What is this madness?” John thought and looked at Brock awkwardly, “For a gym leader, I was expecting Brock to be a little more, well serious!” “Well, I don’t know Brock, isn’t that against the gym leader code of something?” Julie asked. John became impatient and Julie blushed as Brock continued going on and on about his undying love. “That’s it, back away from my friend!” John shouted and stood in front of her. “What’s wrong Jules?” Julie asked. “What’s wrong, what’s right?!” Jules exclaimed, “A gym leader is hitting on you, and I’m being ignored over here!” “Well, kid, what is it that you want, a battle?” Brock questioned, “Well since you had to be so rude about it, I don’t think I’ll battle you!” “Not battle me? You can’t do that, it’s against the code of~” “Oh screw the code, I’m a gym leader and I can do whatever the hell I want!” Brock argued and then turned to Julie, “Sorry about that sweetie-cakes.” “I’m getting a Boulder Badge if it’s the last thing I do!” Jules yelled and released Flame. “Fine then, if you’re gonna be like that.” Brock replied, and folded his arms, “How about a deal.” “What sort of deal?” John asked and scratched his chin. “If I win, which I probably will, your friend over there has to go on a date with yours truly.” Brock explained. “What?! How can I benefit from that?” John asked. “I’m not finished yet squirt. If you win, I’ll give you double the prize money, how about it?” “Wow, that’s like, 2800 zeni!” Jules exclaimed. (Zeni is the money term that is used). “Hey, you can’t just auction me up as a prize!” Julie yelled, “John, please take some time and think about this!” “I’ll do it, I can taste that prize money already!” John exclaimed and rubbed his hands together. “Ok, well prepare for our romantic date Julie, because this kid won’t stand a chance!” Brock exclaimed and released his geodude. “It’s John, and don’t forget it! Flame, ember now!” Flame used his ember on the geodude, but it barely affected him. “What happened, that’s like his best move, so there’s no way it could fail!” John yelled. “It’s only logic Jules, fire type Pokemon are weak against ground and rock type Pokemon!” Julie stated, “Try a different move.” Brocks geodude switched to a defensive position as Flame scratched it. “Ha that barely did a thing, now geodude, tackle attack!” Geodude levitated up and blasted itself directly at Flame. Luckily, Flame dodged it. “Alright Flame, now that geodude is vulnerable, scratch!” Flame scratched geodude, but it still kept going. Flame and geodude kept going at it in the same pattern, and John noticed the battle wasn’t going anywhere. So, to change the flow, he sent out his loyal pidgey. “Pidgey, gust!” Pidgey gathered some wind and flapped the wind at geodude with its winds. It was effective enough to make geodude faint. “Alright, one down!” John exclaimed. “You won’t get lucky this time, go Onix!” “Careful Jules, his Onix is tough!” Julie shouted. “Don’t worry, I can take it, Pidgey, gather another gust!” The gust dropped some of Onixs health points, or HP. “Onix, use bind!” Onix seemed to be gathering energy. Pidgey kept using gusts which continued to weaken Onix by each attack. “Ha, we got this in the bag!” John claimed, “Heh, that prize money is looking pretty good right now!” “Ah don’t get your hopes up kid!” Brock replied and gave his Onix a signal. Suddenly, Onix released all its stored energy towards Pidgey, in one massive blow. The blow knocked pidgey to the other side of the gym. “Whoa, what was that?” John cried and turned to his fallen pidgey. “That’s Onixs best move, Bind!” Brock replied, “It stores energy then releases when ready! You don’t stand a chance!” “Oh really, go Rattata!” John couldn’t risk sending out Flame against the giant rock-snake Pokemon, so he had to play it safe with Rattata. “Rattata use your quick attack!” John’ rattata did just that by dashing towards Brock’s Onix and attacking it. Onix was using its bind again. John let rattata continue its quick attacks and before you knew it, Onix released its bind again. The attack was too much for the rattata and so it fainted. “Oh this is just great…” John thought, “If I lose, Julie will have to go out with him, and I’ll have to try facing him all over again! That sucks a lot, so I gotta think of a plan to take down that Onix.” John had Flame and his weak caterpie. There was no way that his caterpie would be able to stand a chance against the behemoth giant, so he sent out Flame. John knew that from the recent attacks that his Onix was already weakened, but he needed to know if Flame would be able to take him down. “That’s it Brock…” John said, “If my charmander can’t beat you, I’ll call it quits, and you can take Julie with you on your date.” “What, John, you can’t give up that easily!” Julie yelled. “Who says I’m giving up, I believe Flame can do it, and if he can’t do it then none of my other Pokemon can!” Johns words somehow inspired Flame to try his best. . Flame went all out crazy on Onix with his frenzy of scratches and embers. Onix charged it’s energy. “Careful Flame, watch out as it releases it special attack!” Flame continued attacking until Onix released its energy. Flame miraculously dodged it and while in mid air used ember which made Onix faint. A spectacular finish on Flames part. “All right, we get the Boulder Badge!” John exclaimed, “Now how about that prize money?” “Forget it kid, I already gave you the Boulder Badge, what more do you want?” Brock questioned, “Instead I’ll give you this TM-thingy, and this advice. I’m only the first gym leader, and there are seven more even tougher than me! You better watch out kid, because the road to the Pokemon League will be tough. You need to train hard and~” “Yeah I get ya; you don’t have to lecture me Brock!” John exclaimed with his hand out, “Just hand over the Boulder Badge and I’ll be leavin’.” End of Part 3
