Chapter 5 The Fossil Hunt "Join the fossil hunt," Karl read. "You may find something you are looking for at the K.T Canyon Fossil Hunt." "Pi?" said Pichu. "Yeah what is this fossil hunt about?" Tonya asked. "I don't know," Karl said. "The fossil hunt is an important part of the K.T Canyon history," a guy said. "Who are you?" Karl asked. "I am Phil," he said. "Hi I am Karl and this is Tonya," Karl said. "You are very lucky to have a beautiful girlfriend," Phil said. "What she isn't my girlfriend," Karl said. "Yeah I would never go out with a loser like Karl," Tonya said. "Hey what do you mean a loser," Karl said. "Pichuuuu," yelled Pichu as it let out a Thundershock attack shocking everyone and putting an end to the argument. "Why don't you put that thing in its Pokéball it has never been in a Pokéball ever since you got it from Professor Coy," Tonya said. "Okay Pichu get in the Pokéball," Karl said as the red beam shot out of the Pokéball. "Pi," said Pichu like it did want to go. "I guess it doesn't want to go," Karl said. "Why not? It is a Pokémon," Tonya said. "I don't know let me check my Pokédex," Karl said pulling it out of his pocket. "Hmm," everyone said at the same time. "Okay fine then you can stay out then Pichu. But remember you can go in your Pokéball when you are ready," Karl said petting the baby Pokémon. "Excuse me," Tonya said looking at Phil. "What?" he said. "What are you doing here?" Tonya asked. "Don't you remember?" Karl said. "He was explaining what the fossil hunt is about." "Okay, you see every year we have a week dedicate to the fossils of the deceased Pokémon," he said. "So to honor these Pokémon you dig up there bones," Tonya said. "To better understand the Pokémon," he said. "We also hold Pokémon battles at the gym here." "There is a gym here," Karl asked. "Yes there is," Phil said. "Yes time for me to win my second badge," Karl said. "I sorry the gym is closed until tomorrow for the battles," Phil said. "No that means I have to spend two days in this town," Karl said. "No you can spend two days in this town in the tournament," Tonya said. "That is a good idea," Karl said. "Don't worry this is the last day of the fossil dig so tomorrow you can challenge the gym leader," Phil said. "That is a good thing," Karl said. "How old are you Phil," Tonya asked. "I am 14," Phil said. "Hey I am 14 too," Tonya said. "So maybe you could show me around," she said winking at him. "Okay," Phil said. "Hey what about me?" Karl said feeling left out. "You are going to enter the tournament remember," Tonya said. "Right," he said. "See you guys later," he said as he headed to the Pokémon Center. Back to the one Team Delta… "What do you mean 'you don't know where they went'," Cindy yelled. "I was reading this poster for the fossil hunt and when I look up they were gone," Don said showing the poster to Cindy. "I have a better idea," Cindy said. "Lets go dig up some old Pokémon fossils and steal them they will be worth a lot on the Delta market." "Why dig? When we can steal from all those Pokémon diggers," Don said. "Boy we are geniuses," Cindy said as they ran towards K.T Canyon. Now a word from our hero… "Okay you are number 86," Nurse Joy said. "86," Karl said. "Yes you will battle in about 1 hour," she said "Every time you finish battling come back to the Pokémon Center so I can heal your Pokémon." "Okay," Karl said as he headed out of the Pokémon Center to the gym, which was right next door. He walked in the gym to find it packed with people and trainers. (He could recognize the trainers because they had a tag with their number on it.) "What a lot of people huh Pichu," Karl said looking at Pichu. "Pi," said Pichu amazed because he had never seen so many people in his whole life, which wasn't very long. Karl found a seat and started to watch the battle. It was a trainer who had 3 Pokémon and the other trainer was down to his last Pokémon. He threw out his last Pokémon, which was a Tangela. So the match was a Tangela against a Charmeleon. "This match will be over fast," Karl said. The trainer gave order to the Pokémon as they started to attack. The trainer with the Tangela attack with a devastating Hyperbeam attack hitting the Charmeleon but it didn't hurt it that much for some reason and then the tail on the Charmeleon doubled in size. It is using Rage to build it attack power; Karl thought. The trainer said something then the Charmeleon attack with Flamethrower that engulfed the Tangela when the smoked cleared the Tangela had fainted. "The Tangela is unable to battle the winning trainer is Janet," the judge said. Back to K.T Canyon… "Boy this is a big canyon," Tonya said. "Yeah it use to be a big mountain until a bunch of Hitmontops started doing spinning kicks and cut the mountain into this canyon," Phil said. "Or so the legend says so." "That is an interesting story," Tonya said. "Interesting yes but it is only a legend," a voice said. "But Team Delta on the other hand is real," another voice said. "Who is there," Phil said. "Don't worry be sleepy," the first voice said. Then some blue powder floated over our other heroes and they fell asleep. Finally… "Now is my turn," Karl said walking up to the field. "Pichu are you ready to battle." "Pichu," said ready to battle. "The battle is between Karl Rennie trainer from Univin and Josh Scuba from Gully Island," the announcer said. "Each trainer will use three Pokémon let the battle began." "Go Gastly!" Josh yelled as he threw his Pokéball. "Gas." "Go Butterfree!" Karl yelled as he threw his Pokéball with his Butterfree in it. "Freee." "Gastly use Night Shade," Josh said. "Butterfree defense use Teleport," Karl said. Gastly use Night Shade aimed right at Butterfree but he Teleported out of the way. Gastly tried 3 more times but he kept missing Butterfree because of Teleport. "Butterfree use Confusion," Karl yelled. Gastly tried to hit Butterfree with Night Shade but Butterfree's Confusion sent it right back at Gastly who got hit by his own attack. "Gastly use Lick," Josh, said. "Butterfree use Reflect," Karl yelled. Butterfree put up a protective Reflect but Gastly Lick was to strong so it paralyzed Butterfree. "Free," Butterfree said. "Now finish off with a Shadow Ball," Josh yelled. "Butterfree you have to use Psybeam," Karl said. "Free," said Butterfree as it used all its will to break free from paralyzes and use Psybeam destroying the Shadow Ball before it could get 3 inches away from Gastly. The impact from the Psybeam and the Shadow Ball cause Gastly to faint. "Gastly is unable to battle the victory goes the challenger Karl," the judge said. The trainer Josh was surprise, "What Gastly return," he said as Gastly disappeared into its Pokéball. "Go Onix," he yelled as the 28 foot tall rock snake exploded from its Pokéball. "What," Karl yelled as he pulled out his Pokédex. "That is one tall Pokémon," Karl said. "Lets see your Butterfree beat that," Josh said. Meanwhile… "What happen," Tonya said awaking from the sleep powder attack she took earlier. "You finally woke up," Phil said. She look around to find 20 other Pokémon diggers tied up, and Team Delta (the same ones that had kidnap Professor Coy) with a bag were asking some digger where he had put his fossils. "So you finally woke up," Cindy said. "What do you want with me," Tonya said. "Nothing really Tonya," Don said coming back from talking to the man. "How do you know my name," she asked. They pointed at Phil. "I didn't know they want to kill you," he said. "Besides we weren't coming after you we were really here to steal all the fossils and sell them," Cindy said. "But when we saw you," Don said continuing for Cindy. "We decided why not kill two Spearows with one stone. "So where is the other one?" Cindy asked. "I am not going to tell you where Karl is," Tonya said. "We kind of knew you wouldn't tell us so we decided that if you wouldn't tell us then when he found out he will come to your rescue," Don said. "Yeah," Phil said. "But if he finds out then the whole town will come after you for messing up the celebrations. "Hmm," Cindy pondered. "He does bring up a good point." "Why you go and ruin their plan," Tonya said. "Yeah," Don said. "I know we can force her to tell us," Cindy said. "But how?" Don said. "By threaten one of her Pokémon," Cindy said pulling one of Tonya Pokéballs from her belt. "Could it be that Pidgeotto," Don said. "Lets see," Cindy said pressing the button on the Pokéball. "Nido King" yelled the Pokémon. "All right," Tonya yelled. "Nidoking help us out." "Nido," yelled the Pokémon then it lay down and took a nap. "Not now Nidoking," Tonya yelled. "What is the matter your Pokémon scared to fight us," Cindy said laughing. "Yeah," Don said laughing. Back to the Battle… "Onix use Bind," Josh, said and Onix binded Butterfree in its hard rock body. "Butterfree," Karl yelled. He tried to use a Pokéball to call it back but Onix was blocking it. "Butterfree you need to charge up your Solar Beam," Karl yelled. "Free," yelled the Pokémon as it took in sunlight. "Onix squeeze harder," yelled Josh. Onix squeezed harder on Butterfree making it harder to take in sunlight. So in a last desperate move Butterfree shot its half charged Solarbeam attack. The attack hurt Onix long enough for Butterfree to escape. "Butterfree use Supersonic," Karl yelled to Butterfree. Butterfree used Supersonic to confuse Onix but the confused Onix started to Run all around the place hitting Butterfree with a confused tackle knocking himself out so both trainers had no choice but to call back both of there Pokémon. "Butterfree you did an outstanding job you deserve a nice rest," Karl said. "The trainer Josh has one Pokémon while the challenger Karl has two so lets continue," the judge said. Good that means if I make a mistake I can fix it. "Sandshrew go," Karl yelled as he through the Pokéball with Sandshrew in it. "My Pokémon is going to win this one easy," Josh said. "Go Scyther! "Sandshrew Tackle," Karl yelled. "Scyther Double Team," Josh yelled. The one Scyther Sandshrew went to Tackle turned into 3, Sandshrew stopped. "Tackle the one on the right, Karl said but it wasn't the real Scyther. "Ha Scyther use Slash," Josh, commanded. "Sandshrew dig to dodge the attack," Karl yelled fast. "That won't work," Josh yelled as Scyther flied up in the air. What am I going to do; Karl thought. Back to Tonya… "Time to get rid of this twerp," Cindy said as Don pulled out one of his Pokéballs. "Rhydon," Don yelled. "Rhyyyydddddonnn," the Pokémon yelled, Nidoking was awaking because of Rhydon and decided it wanted to fight it. "Finish this girl off with a Horn Drill," Cindy said laughing. "No," Tonya yelled. The spinning horn was 5 inches away from her face then, Bam a Tackle attack from behind by Nidoking. "Nidoking you saved me," Tonya said crying. "Nido," said the Pokémon ignoring her but focusing on Rhydon. "Your disobedient Pokémon wants to battle," Don said. "We will crush it," Cindy said. "No you won't," Tonya said. Back to the Battle… "Sandshrew explode from the ground," Karl yelled as Sandshrew popped out of the ground. "Now Scyther attack with Slash," Josh yelled. "Sandshrew use Sandstorm," Karl yelled. Sandshrew started to dance around until a big cloud of dust appeared on the roof of the gym. All three of the Scyther came at Sandshrew two tried to hit him with Slash but he dodged out of the way. That would have been good if that was the real one but it wasn't and before Sandshrew could realize that that wasn't the real Scyther the real one hit him with a powerful Slash attack hitting Sanshrew in it soft underbelly. "Sandshrew get up for me," Karl yelled. "Sand," yelled the Pokémon as it slowly got back on its feet. "Use Rollout," Karl yelled. The Sandstorm started to rain hard sand hitting Scyther off balance and giving Sandshrew the chance to roll into a ball and hit him with Rollout. "Ther," Scyther yelled. Scyther didn't realize that the Sandstorm countered his Double Team getting rid of the clones of it. The Sandstorm was hurting Scyther but not Sandshrew since he was a ground type. "Scyther use Sword Dance," Josh told the exhausted Scyther but as Scyther started to spin it blew the sand away from it. "Sandshrew finish it off with your Slash attack," Karl said and that did it the battle was over with Karl the winner cause of Sandshrew. "Scyther is unable the battle the winner is Sandshrew and the trainer Karl Rennie is the winner," the judge said. "Yeah," Karl said. "Pi Picu," Pichu said. Back at the Pokémon Center… "Here are the two Pokémon I need to have healed," Karl said handing the Pokémon to Nurse Joy. "A Butterfee and a Sandshrew," Nurse Joy said. "How did you know?" Karl asked. She pointed the TV screen. "What this is Televised?" Karl said but Nurse Joy wasn't paying attention. "Your Butterfree is pretty strong and so is your Sandshrew," Nurse Joy said putting his Pokéballs on a machine. "Your Butterfree and Sandshrew should be fully healed in about an hour," Nurse Joy said. "That is good because your next match is in 2 hours." "Nurse Joy can I ask you a question?" Karl said. "Sure," she said. "Did a girl name Tonya come in here with a guy name Phil," he asked. "No," she answered him. "They must still be at the canyon," Karl said. "Where is the canyon?" "It is about a 15 minute walk from here go back to gym and head east you should reach. You can't miss it because there are a lot of people around the area." "Thanks Nurse Joy I will be back before the match," Karl said. "Ready Pichu," he said to the Pokémon who was eating some Pokéfood. "Pi," said the Pokémon as it followed Karl out of the Pokémon Center. Back to K.T Canyon… "Nidoking Thunder isn't going to work against a ground type," Tonya said trying to get here disobedient Pokémon to obey. "Nido," yelled Nidoking as it tried to use Thrash but it didn't hurt Rhydon being a Rock Type. "Rhydon finish it off with your Blizzard attack," Don said as Rhydon let out a devastating Blizzard attack hitting Nidoking but it only seem to make Nidoking stronger. "What is should be knocked out," Don said. "It must be using Rage," Cindy said. "Yeah that is it," Tonya yelled. "Nido," yelled Nidoking as it let out a very powerful Hyperbeam attack it hit Rhydon directly hurting it badly. "What Rhydon don't let that weak Pokémon beat you," Don yelled. "I will help it go Sandslash use your Hyberbeam attack," Cindy yelled as she through out her Pokéball with Sandslash in it. "Slash," yelled the Pokémon as it started to shot its Hyperbeam attack at Nidoking hitting it but Nidoking was still out of control it shot some poison sting at Sandslash an missed but hit the ropes that had Phil tied up. "Rhydon use your Hyperbeam too," Don yelled. "Rhy," yelled the Pokémon as it started to use it Hyperbeam attack. Both attacks were starting to take its toll on Nidoking. "Here let me help you," Phil said as he untied Tonya. "Thanks, it is a good thing Team Delta has there hands full with my Nidoking so help me untie everyone else," she said. "Okay," Phil said and in a few minutes everyone was untied. "Nido," yelled Nidoking in pain from the attack he was down. "Ha we took care of that," Cindy said then they saw everyone was untied. "What? How?" Don said. "While you were busy with Nidoking I untied everyone," Tonya said. "You won't get away with this," the Pokémon fossil diggers started to say as they cornered. "What should we do now," Don said. "You should go for a ride on the Whirlwind express," Tonya said throwing here Pokéball. "Pidgeotto," yelled the Pokémon as it started to flap its wings at fast rate blow Team Delta away. "We will get you next time," they yelled as they disappeared into the horizon. "Hey everyone what's up," Karl yelled as he joined the group. "Nothing only Team Delta," Tonya said. Back at the Pokémon Center… "So that is what happen," Tonya said explaining what happen at the canyon. "That Team Delta," Karl said. "Don't you have a match?" Phil asked. "Right we better head over to the gym," Tonya said. "Wait I haven't gotten my Butterfree or Sandshrew back from Nurse Joy," he said going to the desk. "Here you are your Pokémon are back to perfect health for there match I hope you win," she said. "Thanks," Karl said. "Remember if you defeat more Pokémon and have the least amount of losses you get a trophy," Nurse Joy said. "Right ready to win another match Pichu," Karl said. "Pi Pi chu," he said. "Lets go," Karl said. Back at the Pokémon Gym… "This match is between the trainer Karl and the challenger Isabel," the judge said. "Each trainer can only use 3 Pokémon let the battle begin." "Karl has two wins," Tonya said. "Each Pokémon he defeats gives him another point but any Pokémon he loses or calls back he losses one point," Phil said, "If he had come earlier he could have competed in the full tournament but since he came late he can't try out for the finals. "Go Charmander," Karl said throwing the silver Pokéball with Charmander in it. "Char," yelled the Pokémon. "Go Raticate," Isabel yelled. "All right Charmander watch out for those sharp teeth," said Karl. "Raticate attack with your Water Gun attack," she said. "Charmander turn it to steam," Karl said. Raticate shot a water gun attack at Charmander but his Flamethrower turned it to steam. "Charmander use your Fire Spin attack," Karl yelled. Charmander's Fire Spin surrounded Raticate. "Raticate use Bubblebeam," Isabel told the Pokémon. Its Bubblebeam attack put an end to Charmander's Fire Spin. "Karl you are going to have to use a different attack," Tonya said. Hmm but what attack can I use; Karl thought. "Raticate use Bubblebeam," Isabel said to her Pokémon. "Charmander use…dig," Karl said. "Good choice," Phil said. Charmander dug a hole just in time before Bubblebeam could hit it but Raticate ran over to the hole and filled it up with water then Charmander popped out of the hole. It was knocked out. "Charmander is unable to battle the victory goes to the Isabel," the judge said. "What," Karl said recalling Charmander. "That is too bad," Phil said. "I wonder what Pokémon is Karl is going to pick now," Tonya said. "All right Raticate keep it up and we might win that trophy," Isabel said. "Go Bulbasaur," Karl yelled throwing the Pokéball with Bulbasaur in it. "Bulbasaur," it yelled. "Lets knock this one out with a Double-edge," Karl yelled. And that is all it took Double-edge connected with Raticate knocking it out. "Raticate is unable to battle the victory goes to Karl," the judge said. "Return," Isabel said as Raticate disappeared into its Pokéball. "His Bulbasaur is at a pretty high level I better watch out," Phil said. "Yeah," Tonya said. "Go Beedrill," she said throwing the Pokéball. "Beeed," yelled the Pokémon. "Bulbasaur use Razor Leaf," Karl said. "Beedrill use Fury attack," Isabel replied. Bulbasaur's Razor Leafs was knocked away because of Beedrill's fury attack. "Beedrill use Focus Energy," Isabel said. "Bulbasaur use Solarbeam," Karl said. Beedrill stood there and focused while Bulbasaur took in sunlight. "Now," Karl yelled as Bulbasaur released the Solarbeam aimed right at the Beedrill with its eyes closed. "Agility," Isabel said and Beedrill disappeared dodging the Solarbeam. "Now Twineedle," Isabel yelled at Beedrill. "Bulbasaur use Vinewhip on Beedrill big stinger," Karl said and Bulbasaur used it Vines to grab the big stinger on Beedrill's butt. "Now, hit it with sleep powder," Karl yelled. "Bulb a saur," yelled the Pokémon as it shook it bulb letting out the blue powder putting Beedrill to sleep. "Beee," the Pokémon said as it fell asleep. "Beedrill wake up," Isabel said but it was no use the Pokémon was asleep. "Beedrill is unable to battle the victory goes to Karl," the judge said. "Okay this is my favorite so don't fail me," Isabeal yelled as she threw the Pokéball. "Pidgeot," yelled the Pokémon. "Uh oh," Tonya said. "Pidgeot is a great bird Pokémon. "Not to mention fast," Phil said. "Bulbasaur Synthesis then Razor Leaf," Karl said. "Bulbasaur," yelled the Pokémon as it started to heal itself then launch a blurry of Razor Leafs but Pidgeot dodged them. "Pidgeot attack with Quick Attack," Isabel said. "Pidgeot, yelled the Pokémon as it hit Bulbasaur knocking it out. "Bulbasaur return," Karl yelled. "Ready to go Pichu." "Pi," yelled the Pokémon as it ran onto the field. "What no you shouldn't use that Pokémon," Tonya said. "Why not?" Karl said. "Because he has never trained it," Tonya yelled. "That is not a smart move," Phil said. "PICHU," yelled Pichu. "Right Pichu attack with your Thundershock," Karl yelled. "Pidgeot quick use Fly," Isabel yelled. Pichu shot a Thundershock attack at Pidgeot but it was to fast and flied out of the way. "Pick it up," Isabel said. Pidgeot dived and grabbed Pichu with its talons. "Pichu," Karl yelled. "Okay now fly up high," Isabel said and Pidgeot flied all the way up to the top of the gym which was 50 feet high. "Drop him." "No Pichu use Thundershock," Karl yelled. "PICHU," yelled Pichu as it let out all of its electricity knocking out Pidgeot. They started to fall down but Isabel called back here Pokémon. "Butterfree catch Pichu," he yelled as Butterfree popped out of her Pokéball and caught a fainted Pichu on its back. "Since Pidgeot endangered a Pokémon life and fainted the winner of the battle is Karl," the judge said. "All right," Karl, Phil and Tonya yelled.
