Pokémon GS, The Johto Leauge Part 2: Rival Showdown: Cyndaquil VS Totodile by "Kenta Marina" In this part, Kenta safely delivers Mr. Pokémon's discovery, Kenta faces off against his rival, and the two brothers set off on their journey. ============================================================================ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ============================================================================ Rival Showdown: Cyndaquil VS Totodile Today, we find our heroes still in Cherrygrove City, but headed out to Route 30, but it looks like they're lost even in this small city, since they don't even have a map! While they were trying to figure out how to get out of this city, an old man instantly appeared. "You must be rookie Trainers, aren't you?" the old man asked. "Who are you calling rookie?!" shouted Matt. "Matt!" "Sorry," he replied. "That's okay," the old man replied. "Well, I've been watching you two all day and you seem to be lost, right?" he asked. "Yeah, we're kinda lost, and we don't even have a map," Kenta admitted. "Are you going out to Route 30?" the old man asked. "How did you...?" asked Matt. "Well, I used to be a Trainer myself, and the best place to have Pokémon Battles is at Route 30 for rookie Trainers!" "Pokémon Battles?" wondered Matt. "Matt, don't you know anything? Pokémon Battles are when two Trainers use their Pokémon in battle." said Kenta. "Sounds cool, but the problem is..." "Oh yeah, you don't have a Pokémon," said Kenta "Well, there are some good Pokémon for Trainers like you two at Route 30," said the old man. "Can you show us where it is?" asked Matt, eager to be able to catch one. "I can't, but this little device will. It only works on your PokéGear," the old man said, pointing to Kenta. "It's the Town Map expansion card. With it, you can see exactly where you are! I myself used this item over the years, but I think this still works fine." he said, as he handed the expansion card to Kenta, who immediately inserted the card in his PokéGear. As soon as he accessed the PokéGear's features, he found the Town Map up and running. "Hey, it does work! Thanks!" said Kenta. "Glad to be of assistance!" the old man said. Kenta and Matt were now able to get out of Cherrygrove City, and into Route 30. It looked a lot like Route 29, but with slightly bigger trees and more wild Pokémon lurking about. The two brothers reached a fork in the road just moments later, and they began to argue on which path to take. "I say we take the right side!" said Kenta. "No, it's the left side!" countered Matt. "Right!" "Left!" "Right!" "Left!" "Ok, fine, left it is, but do you see that sign over there?" asked Kenta, pointing to a small sign in front of them. "Read it and weep!" And Matt read it. The sign said: MR. POKéMON'S HOUSE -> <- ROUTE 31 to VIOLET CITY "Ok, fine, we take the right side!" shouted Matt as they continued on. A few minutes later, Kenta spotted a small house in the distance. It had a red roof, and had no windows. Another small sign was right beside the house, and it read: MR. POKéMON'S HOUSE The two brothers went inside the small home and were immediately greeted by a man who was working on something. "Hello, hello! You must be Kenta and Matt!" he said. "Prof. Elm told me that you would come visit!" "So you're Mr. Pokémon?" asked Matt. "That's who I am! I always discover weird but fascinating things about Pokémon almost all the time! Here," he said, handing Kenta what looked like an egg, with small, different colored shapes around it. "This is what I want Prof. Elm to examine." he finished. "It looks like an egg," said Matt. "I got this thing from an old couple living just outside of Goldenrod City. Apparently, the Trainer didn't want it, so they sent this to me. I believe Prof. Elm is the only one I know who can solve this," said Mr. Pokémon. "In case you didn't know, Prof. Elm is the leading authority in Pokémon Evolution, and I might say that he did show some interesting research papers at conferences." he finished again. "Gee, I didn't know Prof. Elm was THAT famous," said Kenta. "I totally agree with that! Even Prof. Oak here agrees too!" said Mr. Pokémon, as Prof. Oak approached Kenta. "So, you're Kenta, right?" asked Prof. Oak. "That's me!" he said. And just at that time, Cyndaquil, who was resting on Kenta's other, uninjured arm just woke up. "Hmm...what's this? A rare Pokémon?" asked the professor, who picked up Cyndaquil and examined it. "Is something wrong with Cyndaquil?" asked Kenta. "No, not at all, Kenta! I also see why Prof. Elm gave you this friend of yours." "Why?" asked Kenta. "To me and Prof. Elm, Pokémon are our friends. Prof. Elm saw that you would treat your Pokémon with love and care and that's why he gave you Cyndaquil," he finished. "I know! Since you and your Cyndaquil are very close friends, here," he said, handing Kenta a small, shiny, red device. "I know what that is! It's a PokéDex!" said Matt. "That's correct. This is the latest version of the PokéDex. It contains data for each specific Pokémon, their stats and many more. It's basically an encyclopedia!" "Wow, thanks Professor!" said Kenta. "Well, I'd better get going now. I have to get back to Goldenrod City for my usual radio show," he said as he left the house. "You're returning to Prof. Elm, right?" asked Mr. Pokémon. "Well, use this for your Cyndaquil, just in case," he said, giving Kenta a Potion. He put the Potion in his backpack, and the two brothers said their thanks and left the house. A young boy, about Kenta's age went in the open window at Prof. Elm's lab undetected. He quietly crept closer to the table that had the two remaining Pokémon, Totodile and Chikorita. He grabbed Totodile's PokéBall, when the tray that held the PokéBalls fell on the floor and made such a noise that one of Prof. Elm's Aides were alerted. The boy made a run for the exit, when he slid under one of the Aides blocking the door and got away. While the two brothers were headed out of Route 30 and back into Cherrygrove City, Kenta's PokéGear rang and Cyndaquil had to nudge his friend's ear with its' long nose to tell him that there's a phone call. "Hello...Kenta?" said Prof. Elm, who was both nervous and worried. "Professor, what's wrong?" asked Kenta. "A young boy who was about your age stole Totodile's PokéBall!" "And I think he's coming for me." "I suggest that you don't battle him, Kenta. His Totodile's a Water- Type Pokémon, while your Cyndaquil is a Fire-Type Pokémon! His Totodile has the advantage!" "Alright then, I won't fight him when I see him." "Just let the police handle him, Kenta." "Alright," said Kenta, as he turned off the PokéGear's phone. His injured arm had already recovered, so he headed to the Pokémon Center first and had his cast removed first. He thanked Nurse Joy again and headed out. While Kenta and Matt continued on, Kenta bumped into a kid, the kid who stole Totodile from Prof. Elm's lab. "Watch where you're going!" he said, taking notice of Kenta's Cyndaquil. "I see you got a Pokémon from Prof. Elm's lab," he said again. "So he's the one who stole Totodile," thought Kenta. "Big brother, you're not gonna battle him, are you?" asked Matt. "What's the problem, his your big brother too scared to fight?" the boy asked Matt, in a mocking way. "I have no choice but to battle him, Matt." "But you promised Prof. Elm!" "Sometimes, you gotta have to break a few rules and live by your decisions, Matt." "So what's it gonna be?" asked the boy. "Are you gonna run like a chicken, or challenge me to a Pokémon Battle?" "Fine then, but if I win, I'll get your name, whoever you are." The two battling Trainers found a spot at Route 29, near Cherrygrove City. It was near a tree bearing Berries. Matt was the referee for this match. "Alright, a one-on-one battle. There are no time limits, and let the match begin!" "Cyndaquil, let's go!" said Kenta. "Cyndaquil!" it said. "Totodile, I choose you!" the boy said. "Rest assured, you're gonna lose!" "I don't think so! Cyndaquil, Flamethrower attack!" "Totodile, Water Gun!" Cyndaquil was the first to launch an attack. It shot out a stream of incinerating flames at Totodile, who dodged the attack and countered with a stream of water at Cyndaquil. "Cyndaquil, dodge it and use your Quick Attack!" commanded Kenta. "Totodile, just keep attacking that Cyndaquil with Water Gun!" Cyndaquil was able to dodge the attack and all the other attacks after that, but Cyndaquil accidentally tripped and got hit by one of the Water Guns. "Cyndaquil, no!" "Just keep up on the attacks, Totodile!" the boy commanded. "This guys seems to rely on strength, just to beat the living daylights out of his opponents. I got it!" thought Kenta. "Cyndaquil, try a Smokescreen attack!" he commanded. At that command, Cyndaquil shot out a cloud of smoke, obliterating Totodile's view, and making it wonder where Cyndaquil is. "What was that for?" the boy asked furiously. "This is the play that'll take your Totodile down! Cyndaquil, Leer!" This time, Cyndaquil's eyes glowed a bright orange and stared at Totodile. Totodile got a glimpse of orange and tried to attack it when... "Now Cyndaquil! Flamethrower!" commanded Kenta. The smoke cleared, showing a "roasted" Totodile, apparently fainted. "I told you this would take your Totodile down!" said a victorious Kenta. "Great job, Cyndaquil!!" "Cynda! Cynda!" "And the match goes to Kenta and Cyndaquil!" announced Matt, as he watched his brother celebrate like he had just beaten the Champion. The boy, on the other hand, wasn't too happy about the loss. "Totodile, how dare you lose! Return!" he shouted as Totodile was sent back to its' PokéBall. He was leaving already when Kenta interrupted him. "I won, so I'll get your name." "The name's...Hakujou," he said and after that, he went off. "Hakujou..." muttered Kenta to himself as the two brothers continued on back to New Bark Town. "Well at least we know one thing about him, it's that he doesn't care about his Pokémon, not like me, right, Cyndaquil?" "Cyndaquil!" it replied. When the two brothers got back to Prof. Elm's lab, they saw that the whole place was a complete mess. There were police questioning the people inside the lab (which was only Prof. Elm and his Aides). Kenta and Matt approached Prof. Elm, who was being interviewed by a police officer. Prof. Elm noticed the two boys standing behind the officer. "Kenta, Matt!" the professor said. "Whoa, looks like that Hakujou guy really did some damage too!" said Matt. "Whoa, wait a minute, you know the guy who stole the Pokémon?" asked the officer. "Of course! Big brother even managed to battle and beat this...uh.. nothing! Never mind!" "Too late, Matt..." said Kenta. "Well, what was the kid's name again?" "Hakujou," replied Kenta. "Alright, thank you very much for your cooperation, and we'll try to find this Hakujou," said the officer, as he called for the others and left the lab. "Kenta, you told me on the phone that you wouldn't fight him!" the professor reminded Kenta. "Sorry Professor, I had no other choice," replied Kenta. "Oh I forgive you, but great job on beating him!" "Thanks!" "Oh yeah, what was Mr. Pokémon's discovery?" asked the professor. "Here," replied Kenta, handing the mysterious egg. "Mr. Pokémon said that you would easily know what this thing is." "Amazing! Kenta, Matt, do you know what this is?" the professor asked the two brothers. "I don't know," replied the both of them at the same time. "Believe it or not, this is a Pokémon Egg!" "A Pokémon Egg?" wondered Matt. "If this IS genuine, then this must be a great discovery!" said Prof. Elm, grinning at the thought. Then, he noticed the PokéDex sticking out of one of Kenta's pockets. He was alarmed at the sight of that shiny, red PokéDex. "Kenta, you met Prof. Oak?!" he immediately asked. "Yeah, and he gave me this new PokéDex!" replied Kenta, getting the device out and showing it to Prof. Elm. "Kenta, Prof. Oak is the leading authority in Pokémon research!" "And Mr. Pokémon said that you are the leading authority in Pokémon Evolution..." blurted out Matt. "Yes, yes, I was even able to discover some new, pre-evolved forms of some Pokémon!" said the professor as he continued on. "But more on the topic, Prof. Oak is superb at seeing the potential to be Champions in Trainers! Maybe, you have what it takes to be the Champion!" the professor said excitedly. "What makes you think that it's possible that I'm able to be the new Champion?" asked Kenta. Prof. Elm replied, "Your victory over Hakujou, Kenta." "Hmm... I guess that would count." Then, Prof. Elm also looked at Matt. "Have you already caught a Pokémon yet, Matt?" "Not yet, Professor," admitted Matt, who was a little embarassed about it. "That's okay Matt. But I think you also have what it takes too!" said the Professor. And this comforted Matt. "Kenta, Matt, if you plan to take on the Johto Leauge, you have to earn all 8 Badges from the various Gym Leaders around Johto. The nearest Gym would be the one in Violet City, just past Mr. Pokémon's house. But, take heed of this warning," he said, and he continued on again. "The Gym Leaders are the best Trainers around. I guarantee you that they are no pushovers. You must defeat them fair and square to earn the Badge. If you do plan on going, I suggest that you go talk to your mom first, because I'll bet you that she won't like it when she finds out that you're both on a journey," he finished. "We both understand," replied the two of them together. Their mother was glad to see that the two brothers safely returned. She commented on how cute Kenta's Cyndaquil was. But, when Kenta said that the two of them were going on a journey, inside her, she felt sad. But Kenta assured her that they will be back someday. Kenta and Matt got ready for the long journey, packing the stuff they needed upstairs in Kenta's room. They packed food, clothes, and money, on which they decided to split the amount 50-50. Then, they got downstairs and told their mom that they were ready. The three of them went outside and their mother kissed them on their foreheads. The whole town was even there to cheer them on as they went off. The two brothers waved their goodbyes and finally walked on until they disappeared into the horizon. And so, knowing that the whole town is supporting them, our heroes move on, as they head off to Violet City, with the hope of getting in the Johto Leauge. ============================================================================ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ============================================================================ Disclaimer (c) 1995 - 2003 Nintendo (c) 1995 - 2003 Creatures Inc.
