Part 5: Falkner, Master of the Flying Types!

by: "KentaMarina"

Ok, so now, I've decided to submit HTML documents instead of text. Anyway, in this part, Kenta and Matt challenges the Violet City Gym Leader. From what I can tell you right now, between Kenta and Matt's matches, one of them is going to lose. Who is it? Well, see for yourself...

Falkner, Master of the Flying Types!

Kenta and Matt finally reached the door leading to the arena itself. They waited there until a voice came out of nowhere. It was Falkner's voice.

        "Step inside, challengers!" he said.

The steel doors opened in front of them, revealing an enormous room with the standard battling arena in the middle, with 2 wooden benches two feet from the sideline on the longer side of the arena. The room was also surrounded with bricks that were colored blue. Falkner came out from the opposite side of the arena.

"I see you're brave enough to battle me," he said. "Most of the Trainers I invite here always chicken out, and you're the only ones who are brave enough to face me lately," he finished. "So, who is going to battle me first?" he asked.

"I will, and I'm ready," said Kenta, stepping forward.

But Matt stopped Kenta from even stepping forward. "No, I'll be your opponent," he said firmly.

"Matt! What the heck do you think you're doing?" asked an angry Kenta.

"Don't you get it?" Matt replied with anger in his voice. "If I battle before you, you'll know what he's capable of doing!" he shouted back.

"Fine then, but if you lose..."

"Don't worry, I can have a rematch against him," finished Matt.

"Are you sure about this?" asked Kenta.

"Really sure," was the reply, but in Matt's mind, he wasn't sure.

A referee stepped out of the door where Falkner entered the arena. He took his place on the sideline as Matt and Falkner took their places facing each other.

"This is an official match between Falkner of the Violet Gym, and Matt of New Bark Town. This is a one-on-one match with no time limits," he announced. "First Pokémon to knock out the other one wins," he finished.

Matt took out his only PokéBall and wished it luck as he threw it in the air. The Pokéball opened, and a small ray of light shot out, revealing Bellsprout. Matt was able to catch the PokéBall falling back to him just in time.

"Whew, that was a close one," he said, wiping his forehead.

"Well, you'd better learn how to catch it properly," his brother said quietly.

This is gonna be easy, considering that his Bellsprout is a Grass-Type, thought Falkner as he took out a PokéBall. Here goes nothing, he thought as he too, threw the PokéBall in the air, opening itself and releasing a ray of white light, revealing the Pidgeotto he used the night before. It then took flight and went around the arena a few times before it finally went down.

The two Pokémon approached the center of the arena, which had a PokéBall symbol with the half-line seperating them. The referee raised his red and green flags to tell the two Pokémon to be ready. Then, the referee instantly waved the two flags down, signaling them that the match had now begun.

"Bellsprout, start off with a Razor-Leaf attack!" commanded Matt.

Bellsprout instantly waved its "arms" left and right, releasing two pairs of razor-sharp leaves heading straight for Pidgeotto.

"Pidgeotto, Wing Attack!" commanded the Gym Leader.

Pidgeotto flew away just in the nick of time (at least for Falkner), and flapped its wings, releasing two, blade-like gusts of wind straight for Bellsprout.

Oh, no! thought Matt. "Bellsprout, dodge it, quick!" said Matt.

But it was too late, the attack already hit it, sending Bellsprout flying towards Matt's feet. On the sideline, Kenta gasped at what had just happened.

I can't believe this! thought Kenta. Bellsprout was knocked out in one, swift attack?!

"Bellsprout!" shouted Matt as he went to his now knocked out Pokémon.

"Bellsprout is unable to battle," said the referee, holding up a flag on Matt's side. "The match goes to Pidgeotto and Falkner!"

"You did a good job, Bellsprout," said Matt as the knocked out Pokémon was returned to its PokéBall as he cursed under his breath.

"I understand how you feel, Matt," Falkner called out. "You can still challenge me as many times as you want, providing that you train your Bellsprout better."

Matt had angry thoughts inside his head, but he was smart enough not to say it out loud. You have no right to tell me how I can get my Bellsprout to beat your Pidgeotto! he thought as he silently went back to sit where his older brother was sitting. He met Kenta along the way, and quickly told him, "It circles around first." Kenta replied with a quick "I know that."

Falkner's Pidgeotto was already waiting for its next victim. Kenta approached the arena and took his place. Cyndaquil immediately jumped off as Pidgeotto once again took flight. The referee this time started the match earlier before Pidgeotto even got to land.

This is perfect, just perfect, thought Kenta with sarcasm. "Cyndaquil, Smokescreen, now!" he commanded.

Cyndaquil released a jet of smoke from its mouth, reducing Pidgeotto's view as it covered the whole arena.

"Pidgeotto, use your Gust attack!" shouted Falkner.

"Cyndaquil, do a Flamethrower attack before the smoke clears!" countered Kenta.

Pidgeotto flapped its wings as hard as it can, creating a gust of wind and blowing the smoke away, but unfortunately for it, Cyndaquil had already unleashed its' attack as Pidgeotto managed to remove the smoke.

"Pidgeotto, dodge it, quick!" said the Gym Leader.

Pidgeotto was able to dodge the attack just in the nick of time. Kenta and Cyndaquil wasn't too happy about it.

"Cyndaquil, try a Quick Attack!" commanded Kenta.

Kenta thought that Pidgeotto would come down after dodging Cyndaquil's Flamethrower, but it still stayed up in the air.

Kenta shouted at Falkner. "Would you stop being on the defensive and start being on the offensive?!" he asked furiously.

No reply, Falkner just kept looking at Pidgeotto, who was still flying around the arena.

"That's odd, it never did that when I was battling it," said Matt. "Big bro, I think Falkner's planning something!" Matt called out from the sideline.

He might be right! thought Kenta. What could Falkner be thinking, and what could I do about it? he asked himself. "Cyndaquil, aim carefully and use a Flamethrower attack!" said Kenta.

Cyndaquil took aim at the flying bird Pokémon and released a volley of flames from its mouth, which didn't hit the flying Pidgeotto. Suddenly, Falkner had a plan.

"Pidgeotto, fly back down and use Mud-Slap!" commanded Falkner.

"About time it flew back down," Kenta said to himself quietly.

"Big brother, Mud-Slap is a Ground-Type attack!" called out Matt.

"If it's a Ground-Type attack, then that means..." Uh oh...

Pidgeotto swooped down towards the ground, then it kicked the ground, causing some mud-like material flying towards Cyndaquil. The attack knocked Cyndaquil back, leaving it lying on its back, as Pidgeotto once again took flight.

Darn it! This seems hopeless! thought Kenta. But he was wrong, as Pidgeotto grew tired of flying around. That's it! he thought. "Cyndaquil, use your Flamethrower attack!" commanded Kenta.

The little Pokémon got back on its feet and aimed carefully at the tired bird Pokémon.

Falkner saw that his Pokémon was tired of flying around. Now, it's time to take the offensive, he thought. "Pidgeotto, counter it quick with Aerial Ace!" commanded the Gym Leader.

Even though it was very tired, Pidgeotto instantly went off the ground and straight for Cyndaquil, like a heat-seeking rocket that would hit and explode on impact.

Kenta saw the Pidgeotto that was going to attack his Cyndaquil. "Cyndaquil, get out of there!!" he shouted, but it was too late, Pidgeotto had already struck Cyndaquil with one of its wings, knocking it back once again.

Cyndaquil was looking very bad, for it had bruises all over it, and was very weak. Kenta felt very concerned for his Pokémon and wanted to stop, but he believed in Cyndaquil. He believed that it can actually defeat Falkner's Pidgeotto.

"You can do this, Cyndaquil!" said Kenta.

        "Pidgeotto, Gust!" commanded Falkner.

Pidgeotto flapped its wings violently again, creating an enormous gust of wind. Then, with one mighty stroke of its wings, the wind from it blew the gust towards Kenta's Cyndaquil, who still hasn't recovered from the previous attack.

        It's over! thought Matt.

Cyndaquil, you can do this! thought Kenta.

Cyndaquil instantly recovered and dodged the attack in the nick of time. A broad smile spread across Kenta's face, as he got his game face back.

Unbelievable! thought Falkner. Even though it was tired, his Cyndaquil was able to dodge the attack before it hit it! he thought.

That last attack finally wore out Pidgeotto, as it finally crashed down safely.

"Alright Cyndaquil," said Kenta. "Let's finish this! Flamethrower!!"

Focusing all of its energy into this attack, Cyndaquil released one last attack. A huge amount of flame shot out of Cyndaquil's mouth towards the worn-out Pidgeotto. This attack was the strongest out of all the times Cyndaquil used this attack, as it focused all of its remaining energy on this attack. When the flame passed Pidgeotto, it was knocked back, "roasted," and had a spiral look on its face.

"Pidgeotto is unable to battle!" announced the referee. "The match goes to Cyndaquil and Kenta, of New Bark Town!"

Kenta didn't hear the announcement, he simply ran over to his Pokémon, who was also knocked out from its attack. He picked it up and held it in his arms as Matt ran over to help.

Falkner took out his PokéBall and raised it so that it was aimed to Pidgeotto. "You did well, and you deserve a good rest," he said, as he opened the PokéBall and recalled Pidgeotto.

Falkner walked over to Kenta, holding an item in his hand. "Here," said Falkner, handing over the item. "This is a Revive. It will instantly revive your Cyndaquil, but it will only recover half of its health," he said. "This is the only item I have in this Gym, and you earned yours."

Kenta thanked Falkner as he took the Revive and immediately used it on Cyndaquil. As soon as the last drop was gone, some of the bruises on Cyndaquil disappeared like magic, as it stirred in its sleep and suddenly woke up.

Cyndaquil looked very confused. "Cynda, Cyndaquil?" it asked Kenta.

"Yes Cyndaquil, we won," replied Kenta, happy to see that his Pokémon was doing well already.

After things had been cleared up, Kenta (with Cyndaquil on its favorite spot on his Trainer's body) and Matt met Falkner again.

"Since you defeated me, I, Falkner, of the Violet City Gym confer you this Badge as a official proof that you have won in the Violet City Gym," announced Falkner as he gave Kenta a Badge. It had shiny blue wings that was connected to each other, with a very small diamond on the top that connected the wings.

Kenta couldn't believe it, and Matt didn't believe it (in a very bad way) either. Kenta took it and pinned it to the inside of his red jacket.

"Thank you very much," said Kenta.

"You're welcome," replied Falkner. "Oh, and take this," he said, handing Kenta a small sphere-like item. It was smaller than a PokéBall, and it was colored silver.

"What is this?" asked Kenta as he took the item.

"This is called a Technical Machine, TM for short," said Falkner. "A TM is used to teach a Pokémon whatever move it contains, providing that it can learn it."

"So, what move is in it?" asked Matt.

"This one contains Mud-Slap, and I think you already saw what it does, right?" asked Falkner.

"Yeah, but I noticed that Cyndaquil's aim a while ago was a little off," said Kenta. "Is it a side-effect or something?" he asked.

"Yes, Mud-Slap also reduces the enemy Pokémon's Accuracy, so this attack is what you would call an offensive and defensive move," explained Falkner. "Anyway, congratulations Kenta," said Falkner, who then turned his attention to Matt. "Matt, come again tomorrow morning for that rematch, alright?" asked Falkner.

"Alright, but this time, I won't lose!" said Matt.

Falkner replied with a nod and simply walked back inside the Gym.

Now, Matt has to do some serious training if he's going to beat Falkner this time around!
