Part 6: The Evolution of Bellsprout!

by: "KentaMarina"

After a long, long time, this part is finally finished! Marina is introduced in this part, and Matt has his rematch against Falkner. As you can tell by the part's title, Matt's Bellsprout evolves into something...

The Evolution of Bellsprout!

Matt couldn't sleep that night, for he was too nervous about his rematch tomorrow.

Why can't I sleep? he asked to himself. I know I can beat him, but...oh, what the heck, I'll just worry about it tomorrow. he thought, and at that, he finally went back to sleep when suddenly, his big brother's PokéGear alarm went off.

"Morning already?" Matt asked to himself. "But it's so dark in here!" he said as he walked up to the blinds. He opened it, and bright sunlight filled the room, and almost blinded Matt. He immediately closed it to a point where there was very little light coming in.

Kenta yawned and sat up in his bed. "Matt, could you just open the blinds, please?" he asked.

"Big bro, it's too bright out there!" he shouted back.

Kenta got out of bed and walked over to the blinds. "What are you talking about?" he asked as he opened the blinds. "It's just... AAAAH! THE LIGHT!!" he shouted as he suddenly shut the blinds. He then turned to his little brother, sweatdropping. Matt just stood there, with an "I told you" expression on his face.

"Let's just get some breakfast," he said, running out of anything to say.

* * *

After breakfast, Matt and Kenta both got back their Pokémon from Nurse Joy. They thanked her and went over to the phones.

They dialed the number of the phone at Prof. Elm's lab. On the screen, there was nobody there, until a Totodile took a peek.

"What's a Totodile doing there?" asked Matt.

"Totodile! There you are!" shouted a voice that sounded like a young girl's. Totodile then sweatdropped and pointed at the screen, while jumping around. The girl then took a peek at the phone's screen to see who was on the other line. Kenta then recognized who the girl was, although Matt didn't seem to recognize her.

        "Marina?" he asked.

Marina also recognized who the two boys on the other line were. "Kenta? Matt?" she asked.

Matt was very surprised. "How do you know my name?!" he asked, hiding behind Kenta.

"Oh come on Matt, don't you remember me? Your brother, Jun'ichi, and I used to play on his Nintendo 64, remember?" she replied.

A flashback came to Matt then.

Matt, who was 5 back then, sat beside his 8-year old brother as he played with Marina, and Jun'ichi (who were also both 8 back then), on Kenta's Nintendo 64. They were playing a minigame in the first Pokémon Stadium game. After a few minutes later, Kenta emerged victorious.

"Gee Kenta, you're really good at this one!" remarked Jun'ichi.

"Yeah, maybe we should play a different one and see how Kenta reacts when he loses, Jun'ichi!" joked Marina.

"That won't work, because big bro already knows how to win at these minigames!" said Matt.

"Sore losers!" was the reply from Kenta, and they all laughed.

"I still remember when big bro called us 'sore losers,' " said Matt.

"That was insulting, but it was still funny!" laughed Marina.

Kenta noticed the Totodile that was beside Marina and tried to change the subject.

"So, I'll take it that that's your Totodile, right?" he asked.

"Yup, this was the only Totodile left, and I got it. You should also see Jun'ichi, because Prof. Elm gave him a cute little Chikorita!" she replied, also noticing the Cyndaquil that was on Kenta's left shoulder.

"I don't believe it! You actually got a Cyndaquil?" gasped Marina.

        "Yeah, why do you ask?"

"A Fire-Type fits you well for a Trainer like you!" said Marina.

Kenta could not believe what she just said. "What?" he asked.

Marina realized her mistake. "Oh, nothing..." she said, turning red.

Then, another voice was heard in the background.

"Marina, who are you talking to?" asked the voice.

Marina turned around and saw Prof. Elm, while on the other line, Kenta and Matt wondered why she turned that way, until they heard Marina's reply.

"Oh, hi Professor!" said Marina. "I'm talking to Kenta and Matt here!"

"Kenta and Matt? Marina, can I talk to them just for a second?" asked Prof. Elm.

Marina nodded and moved out of the way as Prof. Elm took the phone from Marina's hand.

Matt shouted a very loud "Hi!" as a greeting, suddenly scaring the Professor and dropping the phone.

"How are you guys doing?" he asked, after he picked the phone up again.

"We're fine, Professor," replied Kenta. "I even got my first Badge already!" he said, showing Prof. Elm his ZephyrBadge.

"Very impressive, Kenta! A fast start for new Trainers!" remarked the Professor. "What about you, Matt?" he asked.

"I'm going to have a rematch with Falkner today," he replied quietly.

"That's okay, Matt, you're still off on a good start," said Prof. Elm.

        "Thanks, Professor."

"Alright then, good luck, Matt, and congratulations, Kenta!" he said as he gave the phone back to Marina.

"I'll take it that Matt lost his first Gym Battle, right?" asked Marina.

"Yeah, he knocked out my Bellsprout faster than the speed of light," Matt replied quietly.

"Aw, cheer up, Matt, I know you can do it," said Marina.

"Really? Thanks!" Matt said. "Now I have enough confidence to beat Falkner today!" he shouted, very gladly.

"That's the spirit!" Marina replied, smiling.

"Marina, why are you there anyway?" asked Kenta.

"Prof. Elm needed Jun'ichi and me for some help around the back of his Lab, because there's a fight between the different Water Pokémon over who gets to have the lake," she replied.

"Oh, sorry if we disturbed you guys," apologized Kenta.

"That's okay, Kenta," replied Marina with a smile.

"No, we really should be going," said Matt.

"Alright then," replied Marina. "Matt, good luck to you and Kenta, congratulations!" she said with a wink.

"Thanks" was the reply from the two of them.

* * *

It was around 10:00 a.m. (according to Kenta's PokéGear) that they arrived at the same hard, steel doors from the day before. They opened by themselves and once again, revealed the same arena, although Falkner and the referee was already there.

"About time you got here," said Falkner. "Are you sure you're ready, Matt?" he asked.

"Ready as I'll ever be," he replied, as he took his place opposite Falkner's side. Matt took out what seemed to be a new PokéBall, and held it in his hand.

The referee looked at both Trainers. "This is an official match between Falkner of the Violet Gym, and Matt, of New Bark Town, for one Zephyr Badge!" he announced. "Each Trainer will have one..."

        "Make that two!" interrupted Matt.

        "Uh... Falkner?" asked the referee.

Falkner simply replied with a nod.

"Okay...two Pokémon!" he corrected himself. "There are no time limits, and the first Trainer to knock out both of the opponent's Pokémon wins the match!" he finished as he raised both flags.

What does Matt mean by "two Pokémon?" Could it be that he caught another one while I was sleeping? thought Kenta.

"Two Pokémon?" Could it be that he caught another one? wondered Falkner as he took out a PokéBall.

Wait 'till he sees what I got in store for him! thought Matt, grinning. "Geodude, I choose you!" he shouted as he threw the PokéBall in the air. A ray of white light revealed a floating rock with arms and a face.

"A Geodude?" asked Kenta as he took out his PokéDex, as usual.

"Geodude, the Rock Pokémon. Geodude uses its arms to steadily climb steep mountain paths. Often mistaking them as boulders, people often step or trip on them," it said as it turned itself off after giving the information.

"Where the heck did you get a Geodude, Matt?" asked Kenta.

Matt replied with a grin, "Dark Cave."

"Ok then, where did you get...oh wait, never mind," said Kenta. He was about to ask where Matt got Flash, but then remembered the HM that they got from one of the Sages at the Sprout Tower just before Kenta and Matt's first battles against Falkner.

"A Geodude, huh?" said Falkner. "Good choice, but sometimes, Flying Pokémon can still beat them," he said proudly.

"I don't think so, because Flying-Type attacks will do half the damage!" countered Matt.

"Oh really? Well, take this!" said Falkner, taking out one PokéBall. "Doduo, I choose you!" he said, throwing the PokéBall in the air.

The ray of white light that came out of the PokéBall revealed an ostrich-like Pokémon that had two heads. It had long, slender legs and large "feet."

Kenta's PokéDex immediately responded as soon as Kenta pointed the sensor at the huge bird Pokémon.

"Doduo, the Twin Bird Pokémon. Doduo cannot fly, but it can run fast. This Pokémon leaves huge footprints while running."

"What's the use of a Flying-Type like that if it can't even fly?" asked Matt.

"Obviously, you're underestimating this friend of mine," replied Falkner.

Meanwhile, Jessie, James, and Meowth peeped outside through one of the windows in Falkner's Gym.

"Oh, I can't believe those twerps still beat us!" shouted Jessie.

James sighed. "Well, they always do beat us, even though we got good enough Pokémon."

Jessie glared at him menacingly, and James decided to just keep his mouth shut.

"Meowth, is it ready?" she asked the Pokémon.

"It's ready when you two are!" it replied.

* * *

"What do you mean?" asked Matt.

"Well then, let me show you!" countered Falkner.

The referee then lowered his flags. "Let the match begin!"

"Doduo, let's show this kid how tough you are! Fury Attack!" commanded the Gym Leader.

Doduo rushed at Matt's Geodude, and tried to jab it with its two beaks.

"Who are you callin' a kid? Geodude, Defense Curl!" commanded Matt.

Geodude then curled up like a ball, while Doduo jabbed at it 5 times.

"It still received some damage, though!" shouted Kenta behind him.

"I know that!" Matt shouted back. "Geodude, use your Rock Throw!"

Geodude was confused, there weren't any rocks at all!

"Oh yeah, that's a real brilliant move there," said Kenta sarcastically.

"Now, you shall regret your mistake! Doduo, Tri Attack!" said Falkner.

Kenta couldn't believe this. That's impossible! A Doduo can't have that move, unless... "Matt! That Doduo is at a very high level!" shouted Kenta.

It was too late. Doduo formed a triangle and launched it at Geodude.

        "Geodude, dodge it!" shouted Matt.

Doduo fired the attack, which knocked Geodude back. It was still able to fight.

        "Geodude, Tackle!" commanded Matt.

Geodude lunged forward and hit Doduo right in the stomach. Geodude leapt back, while Doduo tried to get up.

"Geodude, finish it with another Tackle!"

"Doduo, counter with another Tri Attack!" commanded Falkner.

As Geodude lunged forward again, Doduo quickly got up and fired another triangle at him. The impact of the blast had knocked out Geodude.

"Geodude is unable to battle!" announced the referee. "Doduo wins the first round!"

"Like I said, never underestimate my friend here," said Falkner.

Matt recalled Geodude back to its PokéBall, then took out another one. Just then, a loud blast was heard, and a huge robot-like machine with long arms entered. Cyndaquil jumped off Kenta's shoulder quickly and got ready to battle.

"Oh, what now?" asked Kenta furiously.

A laugh came, as Team Rocket came out from their machine.

        "Prepare for trouble!" said Jessie.

"And make it double!" said James.

"Ah, why do I even bother asking?" Kenta said to himself.

Jessie, James and Meowth got lost and angry. "STOP INTERRUPTING US!" they shouted.

Kenta backed away from them. "Hey, it's just a motto," he said.

"He's right, it's no big deal!" said Matt.

"Well, it's very important to us Rockets!" replied James.

"Whoever you guys used to stalk before must've been real annoyed..." mumbled Kenta.

"WE HEARD THAT!" they shouted again. "Ah, forget it, we'll just take your Cyndaquil!" shouted Jessie as the trio sunk back into the machine.

        "Get ready, Cyndaquil!"

        "Bellsprout, let's go!"

Inside the machine, Team Rocket got ready for the attack.

"Meowth, unleash the net!" said Jessie.

Meowth then pressed a button on the console. Outside the machine, a small hatch opened and a rocket fired out of the hatch. It headed towards both Cyndaquil and Bellsprout, then the rocket opened and released a net, catching both Cyndaquil and Bellsprout.

        "Cyndaquil!" Kenta shouted.

        "Bellsprout, Razor Leaf!" commanded Matt.

Bellsprout released some sharp leaves, but it simply bounced off.

"What the..?" Matt blurted out in confusion.

"You see, this here rope's real strong! Your puny attack won't cut this rope!" said Meowth.

"We'll see about that! Bellsprout, Vine Whip!"

Even though it was struggling to get out, Bellsprout unleashed its vines the whip the net. While it didn't do much damage, parts of the thick rope were beginning to break. Meanwhile, Falkner simply recalled Doduo. The referee took notice of what the Gym Leader just did.

"Falkner sir, why did you call back your Doduo?" he asked.

"I believe that our challenger right here can get himself out of this mess," Falkner replied.

"Bellsprout, Razor Leaf attack!" Matt commanded suddenly, as part of the rope began to break.

And that did the trick... It cut the rope and released both Bellsprout and Cyndaquil. Suddenly, as Bellsprout got ready to attack, it let out a cry and started to glow in a weird way...

"No way! It's evolving!" shouted Falkner.

"Evolving?" both Kenta and Matt asked.

The white silhouette of the evolving Pokémon changed to that of what looked like a bell in between 2 small leaves. The white glow faded, revealing exactly what it looked like: a bell-like shape between two leaves. Kenta immediately took out his PokéDex.

"Weepinbell, the Fly Catcher Pokémon. Weepinbell is known to swallow anything that moves if its hungry. It uses Poison attacks to immobilize its' prey."

"Oh no, Bellsprout evolved into a Weepinbell!" said James.

"Don't worry about it, it's not gonna do much damage anyway," said Jessie.

"Don't even underestimate my new Pokémon here!" shouted Matt angrily. "Weepinbell, Razor Leaf attack!"

Weepinbell released two razor-sharp leaves directly at the machine. The leaves seemed to do more damage as it knocked back the machine a few feet away.

"My turn! Cyndaquil, Flamethrower!" commanded Kenta.

Cyndaquil got to close range. It opened its mouth and fired a jet of flame straight towards the machine. The spot where Cyndaquil's attack hit glowed a bright red orange. Kenta then suddenly had an idea.

"Cyndaquil, try your Flamethrower again!" he commanded.

Cyndaquil fired another jet of flame at the same spot it fired at. Soon, the area that the attack hit spread throughout the whole machine. Inside the cockpit, the temperature started to rise inside, and Team Rocket was burning by the minute.

"Hey, is it getting hot in here, or is it just me?" asked Jessie. Wobbuffet popped out of its PokéBall as usual. By the time it realized it was hot inside the cockpit, Wobbuffet panicked and ran around like crazy.

"Let me deliver the final blow!" Matt shouted triumphantly. "Weepinbell, send that thing flying with Slam!"

Weepinbell fired out a vine and hit the machine with force, sending it flying, and breaking apart, leaving Team Rocket flying off.

"Team Rocket's blasting off again!" they all shouted, with a "Wobbuffet!" at the end.

***

At sunset, when everything in Falkner's Gym was repaired (with the help of both Kenta and Matt,) Falkner talked to Matt.

"Matt, that was impressive! Your Bellsprout evolving and showing Team Rocket what its' made off," remarked Falkner.

"Aw...it was nothing," replied a flattered Matt.

"We don't need to have another battle, seeing the way you battled earlier, so as a reward, here's your own ZephyrBadge," said Falkner, giving Matt the same Badge his brother has.

"Wow, my first Badge!" said Matt, taking the badge, smiling uncontrollably.

        "Congratulations, Matt!" said Kenta.

"I finally did it, big brother, thanks to Weepinbell and Geodude!" Matt said, still smiling.

Kenta finally continues on his journey, with Matt, who has won his first Badge. Who knows what challenges await them ahead?
