Pokémon GS, The Johto League

Part 7: The Union Cave

by: KentaMarina

Sorry for the very, very long wait, but due to a shot of a little writer's block, plus lots of school work, and about a cup worth 16 milligrams of my computer crashing for some strange reason (which I was able to fix), I wasn't able to update this and my other fic that's there, The Longest Night. I'm really sorry, but that's the way what happens in my life...

Oh, and when you see the little "₣" symbol, that's the closest symbol I found in Frontpage that looks like the one in the game itself...

Again, sorry for the long wait... Enjoy...

The Union Cave

After Matt won his first Badge from Falkner, the two brothers wait in the Pokémon Center until they figure out where to go next...if they do!

"That's just great, big brother... We don't even know where to go next!!" shouted Matt.

"Well, we could ask Prof. Elm..." suggested Kenta.

"I just did that while you were sleeping, and nobody was there," replied Matt.

"Well, you could've tried again right now..." said Kenta quietly.

"Why didn't I think of that?" Matt said to himself.

Suddenly, the door opened, and a familiar person walked in, carrying a very familiar egg.

"Hey, isn't that Prof. Elm's Aide?" asked Kenta.

"Kenta! Matt! We meet again!" said the aide.

"How come you're here?" asked Matt, as he and his brother stood up.

"Well, Prof. Elm asked me to give this to you," he said as he handed Kenta the egg he was carrying. Cyndaquil woke up and examined the egg.

"Isn't this the Pokémon Egg we brought back?" asked Kenta.

"Yes, and Prof. Elm figured out that a Pokémon Egg will hatch if it's with active Pokémon, and since you've been a big help, he decided that you should keep it until it hatches." replied the aide.

"Don't worry, tell him we'll take good care of the egg. By the way, we're kinda lost because this certain person..." Matt said, glaring at Kenta. "...doesn't know where to go next!"

"The closest Gym would be in Azalea Town, but it is separated by the Union Cave," said the Aide. "The cave shouldn't give you much trouble, but there are some wild Pokémon there too." The Aide looked at his watch. "Oh, I have to go now. Take good care of the egg!" he said as he ran out of the door.

* * *

After breakfast and healing their Pokémon, Kenta and Matt head out towards the Union Cave and see a person blocking their way.

"Show me proof that you are decent Trainers!" shouted the person.

"What kind of proof?" asked Kenta.

        "A ZephyrBadge," he said.

Kenta and Matt simply showed him their Badges. The person was shocked and moved aside.

        "Good enough?" Kenta asked.

"Sure...you can pass..." he said hesitantly.

As Kenta and Matt walked through the tall grass, they saw something spark up. It scared Matt and he hid behind Kenta.

        "What was that?" he asked.

Kenta took a step forward and saw a sheep Pokémon, sparking with static electricity. Kenta took out his PokéDex.

"Mareep, the Wool Pokémon. This Pokémon's fleece doubles in volume when static electricity builds up. Touching it will shock you," it said.

"Well that's my kind of an Electric-Type," Kenta said as he nudged Cyndaquil awake. Mareep turned towards both Kenta and Cyndaquil.

        "Cyndaquil, Quick Attack!" commanded Kenta.

"Quil!" it replied as it charged towards the wild Mareep with blinding speed.

The wild Mareep let out a cry and electricity came out of its body, launched towards the speeding Cyndaquil.

"That's a Thundershock!" shouted Matt. Kenta rolled his eyes, since he already knew what was that attack, which had hit Cyndaquil, knocking it out of its own attack.

"Fine then, we'll fight special attack with special attack," Kenta said. "Cyndaquil, attack with Ember!"

Cyndaquil fired little bullets of flame at Mareep, surrounding it with flames.

        "Cyndaquil, Flamethrower!" commanded Kenta.

"Cynda...quil!!" it shouted as its back flared up and released a jet of flame from its mouth. Cyndaquil scored a direct hit as Kenta took out a PokéBall.

"PokéBall, go!" he shouted as he threw it at the wild Mareep. Cyndaquil stepped aside as the Ball hit Mareep and caught the wild Mareep inside. The Ball fell to the ground, and it shook side to side slowly, making a small sound. Kenta waited as the Ball suddenly stopped moving. He went over and picked it up.

"Yeah! I caught a Mareep!" shouted a victorious Kenta.

"Cyndaquil!" it said, jumping up and down.

"An Electric-Type...just great..." Matt said quietly as Kenta continued to celebrate as if he had just become the League Champion.

They passed a small lake filled with some Fishers. Kenta took out his PokéDex and got information on the Pokémon that the Fishers were catching.

"Magikarp, the Fish Pokémon. A weak Pokémon, Magikarp is famous for being unreliable. It can be found swimming in seas, lakes, rivers and shallow puddles.

"Goldeen, the Goldfish Pokémon. Known as the Water Queen, its dorsal, pectoral, and tail fins wave elegantly in the water."

When they finally reached the Pokémon Center, a huge man blocked their way.

"Hi there!" he said. "Would you two like a tasty Slowpoketail?" he asked.

"Uh... What's a Slowpoketail?" asked Matt.

The man stalled for a second, but he recovered. "Why, it's the most delicious treat ever! And it's all yours for just ₣1,000,000!"

        Matt was surprised. "₣1,000,000?!?"

Kenta nudged Matt in the side and whispered, "I don't think we should get this, even though if we actually had THAT much money."

        "Why not?" Matt whispered back.

"Don't you get it? A Slowpoke IS a Pokémon!" Kenta whispered.

The man was growing impatient. "Well, are you two gonna buy this or what?"

"Sorry, we don't have THAT much money in our pockets right now," replied Kenta as he and his little brother went inside the Pokémon Center.

The man shook his head sideways. "I thought kids these days were loaded," he muttered to himself as he found another person to sell it to.

* * *

After they got their Pokémon back (with Cyndaquil now on Kenta's shoulder again), they went out and finally reached an entrance to a small cave.

"Kenta, is this the Union Cave? Or better yet, is this a cave?" asked Matt.

"Matt, why don't you read the sign?" replied Kenta.

Matt saw a sign near the entrance that read:

UNION CAVE AHEAD

The cave looked small on the outside, but it was gigantic inside. It wasn't dark, but it was bright, as if somebody was using Flash. Suddenly, Kenta heard a soft roar.

"Did you hear that?" he asked Matt.

        "Hear what?" Matt asked back.

"It was kinda like a roar or something," replied Kenta.

"Kenta, are you okay? Because I heard that when people hear things, they could have something wrong with their brain," said Matt quietly.

Kenta looked at him menacingly. "What's THAT supposed to mean?"

* * *

"Something doesn't feel right..." Matt suddenly said.

The two have been walking for hours, and they found themselves returning to a spot with a ladder going down several times already.

"For once, I think you're right," said Kenta.

"What do you mean by 'this once'?" asked Matt.

        "Never mind," replied Kenta quietly.

"So," Matt began again, "is it safe to say that we're COMPLETELY LOST?!" he shouted, with a tone of fear and panic in his voice.

"Matt! Calm down," said Kenta quietly. Then, he heard the same roar that he heard earlier, although it was a little bit louder.

        "What was that?" asked Matt.

"That's what I was hearing a while ago," said Kenta. He walked towards the ladder. "It's coming from here," he said.

        "Um, Kenta?" called Matt quietly.

Kenta turned his head back towards Matt. "What do you want?" he asked.

"I was just wondering, we're not going down THERE, right?" asked Matt.

Kenta looked at him and smiled. "Yes we are," he said.

And with that, Matt let out a groan of disgust as the two went down the ladder.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket was hiding behind a rock as the two brothers went down the ladder.

"Should we follow them?" asked Meowth.

"We should, because there might be a rare Pokémon that lives down there!" replied Jessie.

* * *

The two brothers followed the sound down a few more ladders they found (with Matt becoming more scared by the ladders), until finally, they reached a small lake.

"So, what's exactly making the noise, big brother?" asked Matt.

"I think we just found it," said Kenta quietly, pointing to a Pokémon who was swimming by itself.

"It seems to be a Water-Type, but why does it live here?" asked Matt.

Kenta said nothing and pulled out his Pokédex.

"Lapras, the Transport Pokémon. A rare Pokémon that has been almost overhunted to extinction, this Water-Type Pokémon can carry people across water.

"No wonder it's swimming all alone," said Kenta quietly.

"Kenta, I think it's hurt," said Matt.

"How do you know?" asked Kenta.

"I just know it is," said Matt as he went into the water. The Lapras saw what Matt was doing and thought that he would hurt it, so it swam away.

"No, no, no, I'm not going to hurt you," Matt said calmly, still approaching the Lapras. He pulled out a Potion and waded closer. "I'm just going to...AAH!" he shouted as he accidentally went over to the deep end.

"Matt!" shouted Kenta as he went into the water to save his brother.

"Help!" shouted Matt, who was gasping for air, "I can't swim! Kenta!" he shouted again, taking in water. Lapras was now trying to swim towards Matt as fast as it could.

Team Rocket was now hiding near a rock near the lake where Kenta was trying to save Matt from drowning.

"A Lapras!" exclaimed Meowth. "If we catch that, the Boss will surely give us a promotion!"

"Let's just grab that Lapras!" said James. "How hard could it be?"

"It's definitely hard with those two around..." said Jessie quietly...

* * *

Matt was still sinking, while both the Lapras and Kenta swam towards him. Matt finally sank underwater, and Lapras dived down.

        "Matt!" Kenta shouted.

But Matt could not hear him. He was now unconscious, and barely felt the Lapras bring him up to the surface.

* * *

Matt finally opened his eyes. "Where am I?" he asked.

"It's okay Matt, you're alive," said Kenta, who let out a sigh of relief after Matt awoke.

        "Where's the Lapras?" asked Matt.

Suddenly, a large shadow covered him, and looking up, he saw the Lapras. It nudged Matt as if to thank him. Then, a large net was on Lapras. Matt got up to see who put the net on. It was none other than...

        "Team Rocket!" shouted Matt.

Then, the trio began to say their motto. Kenta rolled his eyes at the first word that came out of Jessie's mouth.

"To protect the world from devastation!"

"To unite all peoples within our nation!"

"To denounce the evils of truth and love!"

"To extend our reach to the stars above!"

Kenta nudged Cyndaquil, who in turn, leapt off of Kenta's shoulder and flared up its back. Kenta whispered something to Cyndaquil, who smiled and nodded happily. At this, Team Rocket stopped for a moment and turned to Meowth to translate.

"What are you two talking about? I didn't hear nothing," replied the Pokémon. Team Rocket then decided to continue on.

        "Jessie!"

        "James!"

After James introduced himself, he fell on his back suddenly, not knowing what had just hit him. Jessie also fell back just a few moments after James fell. As Meowth looked back, he saw a happy Cyndaquil jumping up and down, and a Kenta who was on the ground, holding his stomach from laughing hard.

"Nice shot, Cyndaquil!" he praised the little Pokémon through laughter.

Matt, on the other hand, simply stood there, not believing what had just happened. During this, Matt took out the Potion, ran over to the net which held Lapras, whispered something, and sprayed the item. The Lapras winced in pain, but it knew what Matt was doing. Matt immediately ran back, and was spotted by Meowth as both Jessie and James got up.

"Why that little," Meowth said as he ran towards Cyndaquil, ready to do a Fury Swipes attack. Cyndaquil immediately saw this and switched back to its "fighting stance." Cyndaquil dodged Meowth and fired an Ember attack on Meowth.

"Seviper, go!" shouted Jessie as she released her snake Pokémon from its PokéBall.

"Cacnea, I choose you!" shouted James as his Pokémon was released. Cacnea attacked James as usual, and James got it off.

Kenta got back on his feet. "Matt, protect that Lapras," he said. "I'll take care of these two idiots!"

"Got that," replied Matt. "Lapras, Body Slam attack!" he commanded. Everybody was surprised to hear this, then they were surprised even more as the Lapras got the net off and did the attack on Meowth.

"Get this thing off of me!" said Meowth, trying to hit Lapras with his claws.

"Cyndaquil, Flamethrower, now!" commanded Kenta. Cyndaquil launched the attack, hitting not only Cacnea and Seviper, but also Jessie and James. Lapras got off of Meowth and used a Water Gun attack, sending Team Rocket flying outside the cave.

"Team Rocket's blasting off again!!" they all shouted before finally disappearing in the sky.

* * *

"So Matt, how exactly did you get Lapras to obey you?" asked Kenta.

"It was easy, Lapras knew that I wasn't trying to hurt it form the start, so I befriended it," Matt explained.

The two brothers were on Lapras, who took them on a shortcut out of the caves through a lake. When they finally saw a light, and the way out, they went on shore. Matt recalled Lapras and they continued outside.

"Finally!" exclaimed Matt. "About time we got out!"

"Wait a second, who's that guy right there?" asked Kenta, pointing to a man dressed in black, guarding an entrance to a well.

"We might as well ignore him for now," said Matt. "Where's Azalea Town?" he asked.

They came upon a small town with a Pokémon Center. They went inside and Matt asked Nurse Joy where Azalea Town was.

"Well, you're in the Azalea Town Pokémon Center," replied Nurse Joy. "So, do you want to heal your Pokémon?" she asked.

"Yes, please," said Kenta as he handed over his PokéBalls. Matt followed suit and they decided to go out and check out the town. They replenished their supply of items from the PokéMart there and they then decided to check out the Gym, when Matt accidentally bumped into a man.

"Sorry," apologized the man. "I was kinda in a rush." The man looked in his 40's and he still seemed kind of fit for a person his age.

"Why, are you late or something?" asked Kenta.

"No, but did you see that man who was wearing a black uniform?" he asked the two brothers, who nodded slowly in reply.

"Well, deep down behind him, I'm suspecting that they took and hid our Slowpokes inside there," the man explained. "That's why there's no Slowpoke around these days!"

"Wait a second," said Matt, "there used to be Slowpokes in this town?"

The man nodded. "I must go now, I need to see if they have the Slowpokes!" he said as he ran off.

When Kenta and Matt were left there, Kenta simply nodded to his little brother and they both went off to follow the man.
