Number One: The Recruiting Saga As the alarm clock rang and I opened my eyes, I thought about what this day would bring me. I was twelve years old, and it was the second day of summer. At 8:00 sharp, I would go to the Viridian City Pokemon Center and retrieve my first Pokemon. Two other kids would be choosing as well, we would pick from a Bulbasaur, Squirtle, or Charmander. I didn’t know which I would choose just yet. I jumped off the bed and held my hand out as if a Poke Ball was in it. I threw the Poke Ball, and as it was flying, it opened and a white energy appeared with a green Pokemon coming out. “Go, Bulbasaur!” I was daydreaming now. “Saur!” He croaked as he came out. In the stadium, he jumped into the air. He smiled as he awaited a command. “Bulbasaur, use Razor Leaf!” I commanded. The sharp leaves shot out of Bulbasaur’s bulb and onto the field. “Hurry up, Tanner!” My mother screamed from downstairs. “Yes ma’am!” I answered. My mother had ruined my dream. I jumped to my drawer and picked out a shirt. It was plain black, except for the emblem on the middle back. It was a red hand, with its hand balled into a fist. It was inside a white box and under the fist was yellow stencil writing that said ‘P League’. I stood for the Pokemon League. I then put on a pair of baggy denim shorts. While slipping on my blue loafers, I had another daydream. “Go Squirtle!” I threw my Poke Ball. I was in the forest and the blue turtle Pokemon was in front of me. I had encountered a wild Pokemon. “Go get it with Bubble!” I commanded. “Squirtle, irt!” Squirtle answered. The water Pokemon jumped into action and fired the fatal bubbles from his mouth. “I’m serious, Tanner! Hurry up; you won’t get a Pokemon if you don’t hurry!” My mother screamed once again. She had ruined my daydream for the second time. After I put on a hat that matched my shirt, I headed to my backpack. I had packed a lot of chips and peanuts, along with some bottles of water. There were also cans of diced peaches, and a few forks. Food was going to be hard to come by on my Pokemon journey. With all clothes and backpack on, I had yet another attack from the perilous daydream. I was in a volcano, lava all around me. Then, a huge wave of lava came towards me. “Go, Charmander!” I held out my Poke Ball and let my fire lizard Pokemon out. “Char, char!” He said in a light voice. “Quick, use Fire Spin to push the lava out!” I ordered. Charmander shot the fire from his mouth, and it began to form in a tornado of fire. The tornado caught the lava and spun it all around until it just fell back to the hole. “It’s already 7:45!” Dad yelled from the kitchen. “I know.” I yelled back. I knew that I was going to be late, I knew that my parents were fed up with my lollygagging, but most of all: I knew that I wanted to pick Charmander for my first Pokemon.
