I kept running, never stopping, never looking back. I could’ve easily ran past Umbreon, but instead I kept at his side. I kept panting as the snow-white jewel on my necklace jingled with every step I took. I felt like I was in a dream. The type were you keep running and don’t know why, yet you never get anywhere. I started feeling dizzy. This HAS to be a dream, I thought. Suddenly, Umbreon collapsed on the ground, sweat dripping from his face as he stared at the ground, breathing heavily. “These human legs... they’re so slow and weak...” Umbreon said. “This has to be a dream... it just has to be!” I muttered, ignoring Umbreon. Umbreon turned to look at me with his gleaming sapphire eyes. “Well, be quiet, because it isn’t.” I was startled at his reply. I didn’t expect him to understand me, now that he’s a human and I’m an Umbreon. “How did you know what I just said?” I asked. “Ugh... are all of you humans like this? I was once an Umbreon too you know. Just because I’ve learned the language that all of you speak doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten the one I speak as an Umbreon.” He answered, annoyed. “Now, if you excuse me, I think I’ll be going off to find my friends. After all, you ARE the daughter of that man that turned me into what I am right now, right? I don’t think I want to hang around with you any longer. It’s making me feel sick.” And with that he turned around and started walking away. “Wait!!” I cried. “I hate him just as much as you do. Do you think I actually agreed to participating in his experiment? I also hate being an Umbreon just as much as you hate being a human. I want to get on with my life.” I said. He turned around. His eyes softened. But soon he started looking at my jewel instead of my eyes. “What’s that?” He asked, getting off-topic. “Oh... this?” I said, twiddling with my jewel again. “If I hold on to it and concentrate really hard on a pokemon, that pokemon will come to me. That’s how we got you to come to us.” I answered. He stared at the jewel for awhile. Finally he spoke. “Before your father brought me into his lab, I heard something calling me... something calling ‘Midnight... come... you must come...’ to me. I felt this sudden urge to follow it. That must have been the power of your jewel.” He said. “Oh.” I said. I looked up into his eyes but turned away. His stare was too much to bare. “So, Midnight’s your name? Kind of strange, don’t you think?” I asked. He looked very angry at my question. “No, of course I don’t!” He Answered, trying his best to keep calm. “It shows what us Umbreon love... pure darkness. The moonlight gives us power. And if you stand under a full moon and keep very quiet, you can hear the darkness whispering in your ear.” I just stared at him. Of course I knew that Umbreon were dark-type pokemon, but I never knew they took all of this so seriously. “Now, if you excuse me, I need to go find my friends.” “I’m coming with you.” I said. “No your not.” Midnight said. “Look, if you ever want to be turned into an Umbreon, you have to have me with you too. Otherwise the link won’t be complete. Besides, I want to turn back into a human.” I said. Midnight sighed. “Okay, you can come with me. But just promise me we won’t have any conversations.” I couldn’t help from grinning at what he said. “Okay.” I agreed. ********************* After walking awhile, we came to a clearing. The trees made a circle around us. The moon shone directly from above. It made me feel nervous. “My friends should be around here somewhere. This is where we always meet.” Midnight whispered to me. “I’m going to tell them that it’s me.” I nodded. “Okay... but be careful.” I said. I still thought this place was dangerous. “Hello, my friends. Tis me, Midnight, thee Umbreon in which thee darkness whispers to. A foolish man turned me into a human, and in turn turned his daughter into an Umbreon. Don’t let my appearance fool you. Tis really me.” Midnight said, choosing his words carefully. There was no reply. I could feel the presence of eyes staring at us, though more at Midnight. They didn’t trust us. Midnight elbowed me. “Well, why don’t you tell them something? Maybe they’ll listen to you since you’re an Umbreon now.” He whispered. “Oh, uh... yea... okay.” I whispered back. Me? Talk to his friends? How could I do that?! What would I say?? “Y-Yes, I’m really not an U-Umbreon. I’m Starlight, a h-human. This human h-here is actually M-Midnight that got turned into a h-human. And I got turned into a-an U-Umbreon.” I stuttered. If all of his friends weren’t there watching us, I would’ve slapped myself in the face. That had to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever said. And it looked like Midnight wanted to slap me in the face his self too. Now I could feel all of the eyes staring at me. After waiting five seconds, it happened. “Attack!!” Seven Umbreon jumped at me from their hiding places in the trees surrounding us. Not Midnight, just me. I got pushed to the ground in a furry of sharp claws and teeth. It felt like they were ripping at my heart, trying to kill me. I couldn’t see anything except for the color of black, and sometimes the red of their eyes, and I couldn’t move either. Never before had I gone through so much pain. “Traitor.” “Traitor.” “Traitor.” That is what I heard all of the Umbreon whispering as they attacked me. Suddenly, I understood... they thought I was Midnight! They thought I had gone to the side of a pokemon trainer. “Starlight... you must attack them!” I heard Midnight shout over the cries of all of his friends. Attack? Like I really know how to attack right now. Just as I thought I was going to die, the attacking stopped. All of the Umbreon jumped a foot away from me. “You can’t be Midnight... Midnight would’ve attacked us by now. Midnight is the master of battles under thee moonlight.” One of the Umbreon said. “That’s because I’m not.” I said weakly. “Like I told you, I’m Starlight, and I got turned into an Umbreon by my father while Midnight got turned into a human. How many times do we have to tell you that?” I took a look at myself. Only then did I realize I was bleeding just about everywhere... and really badly too. I breathed heavily, trying to stand up. All of the Umbreon looked up at Midnight. His icy sapphire eyes stared at them. “Midnight... it really is you!” One of them cried. Soon all of them went into a frenzy of excited yips as they all jumped on top of Midnight. “Umph!” Midnight grunted, as he collapsed from all of that weight on top of him. They all jumped away from him as soon as they jumped on top of him. “Hurry... you must turn back into an Umbreon!” They all gathered into a circle around Midnight. Midnight just stood there and closed his eyes, concentrating deeply. I was about to say that this wouldn’t work, but then Midnight starting changing. His skin turned pitch-black and his ears grew longer and bigger. His sapphire eyes turned fire red, and a tail emerged on him. His hair turned a deep shade of purple. Then everything stopped. He was now half- Umbreon. He was a poke’ morph. He opened his eyes and looked at himself. “I’m still not fully an Umbreon.” Midnight said, his heart sinking. “Yes... you’re now a poke’ morph!” I said, staring at him in awe. “What’s that?” He asked, suspicious. “It a creature that’s half human, half pokemon. You just turned into one.” I answered. “Ah, I see.” Midnight said. “Well, this is the closest I can get to becoming an Umbreon at the moment. Do any of you know where Starlight and I can go to reverse this dreadful thing that has happened to us?” He asked. He didn’t seem too excited about turning in a poke’ morph, to my surprise. “Actually, I think I know a place. There’s a lab just north of here. It’s one thousand miles away, by the way.” One of the Umbreon answered. “Okay... then to the lab it is.” Midnight said. He started walking north. “Wait up!” I cried. I ran after him, and we started walking north, the moonlight still shinning down on us. Little did I know that our journey would be like none other than before. And little did I know that my jewel was to more importance than I thought.
