I slowly opened my eyes. At first I couldn’t see anything- everything was so blurry. Then my vision cleared up, revealing a single dim light bulb hanging over my head. I was sitting in a leather chair, metal cuffs attached to the chair rapped around my legs, waist, and wrists. An evil darkness seemed to surround me, just waiting to attack, just waiting... I had a sudden urge to cry out to Midnight, to scream for help. But I knew that he was nowhere near were I was now... wherever I am. “Ah... so your finally awake now.” Said a familiar, haunting voice. It was Giovanni. He stepped into the light, grinning. “You look different.” I was still in my poke’ morph form. His eyes slowly reached the jewel that hung on my necklace. “Yet there are still some things that are the same about you.” “What do you want?” I asked through gritted teeth. “Oh, I think you know perfectly well what I want, Starlight.” Giovanni answered, slowly walking closer to me. I stared at him. “How do you know my name?” I asked, frightened. “Never mind how I know your name. You have something I want, and I want it now.” Giovanni said, pointing at my jewel. “And I always get what I want.” I stared open-mouthed at my jewel. “This? I can’t give this to you!” I said. Giovanni pressed a button on a near-by wall, and the metal cuffs on my wrists disappeared. “Look, I don’t have to make this any harder than it is. Take off your necklace, and give it to me.” Giovanni said, holding his hand out. My face grew from a frightened expression to an angry determined expression. “Never!” I shouted. Giovanni’s smile turned into a dark frown. “Fine then. You have forced me to just take it from you myself.” Giovanni said. He reached out to grab my jewel. Suddenly, flashbacks of the past appeared in my mind. Me, ten years old... my friend reaching out to grab the jewel... intense pain that swelled up in me when she touched it... her falling to the ground... unconscious... twitching... “No!!” I screamed. But it was too late. Giovanni reached out and grabbed the jewel. Pain stabbed me from all directions, scratching, tearing, swiping, and biting at me. It hurt even more than when Midnight’s friends attacked me. I could see that Giovanni was going through the same thing. “Please.... let.... go...” I groaned. “I won’t... not until... you give me... your... jewel!” Giovanni said, also groaning in pain. Wet tears were now streaming down my face. I couldn’t stand it any longer. I felt like I was going to die. I took my hand and tried to pull Giovanni’s hands off of the jewel. But his grip was too tight. I dug my fingernails into his skin. He winced, put still held my jewel with a firm grip. Oh, how I wished to call to Midnight... to shout ‘Midnight... come... you must come!!’. That was it. Those were the words Midnight heard when I used my jewel to make him come to my father and I. Oh, how I hoped he was still half pokemon right now! My hands still griping the jewel, I closed my eyes and concentrated on forming a picture of Midnight in his poke’ morph form in my mind. It was hard doing so, with intense pain throughout my body. There he was, his icy fire-red eyes staring into my soul. Would it work? That’s when I heard an explosion from the wall to the left of me. Moonlight came shining down on me from outside, and Midnight emerged from the hole, glowing purple. Giovanni, surprised, let go of my jewel and fell to the ground, shaking. “Midnight!!” I cried happily. The tears of pain that were dripping down my face turned into tears of joy. Midnight grinned at me. “The light attracts darkness.” He whispered, nodding at my jewel. “You!!” Giovanni shouted, his face a mess of rage and anger. Midnight just continued grinning and put a finger to his lips. “Shhhhhh. Do I have to give you the same lecture I gave Starlight?” Midnight asked. He jumped up into the air and a beam of black light came shooting down from his hands to the metal cuffs rapped around me. They broke, and I was released. I ran as fast as I could towards Midnight, as if something were chasing me, trying to capture and kill me. “Oh no you don’t!” Giovanni growled. He grabbed my ankle just as I ran past. My stomach seemed to leap to my throat as a started falling, my arms franticly waving about. Midnight gracefully caught me just before I hit the ground and pulled me out of Giovanni’s grasp. He carried me to the hole in which he came in, and looking down, I realized we were on the top floor of a tall building. How did Midnight get up here? But more importantly, how were we going to get down without getting ourselves killed?! Instead of jumping down, Midnight jumped up to the top of the building. He ran across to the edge facing the moon, pushed up from the ground, and leaped into the air. I screamed as we fell through the air to the trees below. What was going to happen to us? As we fell through the leaves on the trees, Midnight took out one of his arms that was holding me and reached out, grabbing a branch. His other arm held me tight. I breathed out a sigh of relief. Midnight let go of the branch and we landed safely on the ground. I brushed some leaves off of me and looked up into Midnight’s eyes. “Thanks so much.” I said. He grinned once again. “It was no problem. Like I said, the light attracts the dark. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have known how to get there.” Midnight said, staring at my jewel. I held the jewel up to my face. It was reflecting the moonlight. “Well, do you know which way is north, now that we’re both here?” I asked. “Well, my Umbreon instincts haven’t gone away, fortunately. North is over there.” He answered, pointed to the right side of the moon. I smiled, and we walked off, the jewel still safely hanging on to my necklace.
