Midnight and I continued to walk up the hill towards the lab above. This was it. The end of our journey. The end of a journey I’d never forget. I’d finally be able to turn back into a human. Yet I trudged my way up the hill slowly, digging my feet into the ground. Midnight had to be at least thirty feet ahead of me. He turned around. “What’s taking you so long? Can’t you go a little faster?” Midnight urged. I sighed and looked up at the twinkling stars. After everything had happened, daytime quickly passed and had turned into night. “All right, all right... I’ll go a little faster...” I muttered. But I only picked up the pace a little bit. Midnight didn’t understand. Of course he didn’t. Finally, after a lot of walking, we reached the front door of the lab. Maybe it was just my imagination, but the door seemed to tower over us. My stomach leaped up to my throat. I had never been so nervous before. I felt like throwing up. I was twiddling with my jewel so much that I was afraid it might break off. “I should probably change back to human, and you should probably change back into an Umbreon. I think it might surprise him... or her, if we appeared at their front door in our poke’morph forms.” Midnight whispered. I nodded in agreement. At least I wouldn’t have to talk to the owner of the lab at all until we turned back to our original forms... if we ever did, that is. I stopped Midnight before he could turn into a human. “Wait. This will probably be last moment we get to talk to each other.” I quickly said. Midnight stared at me. “Don’t worry... I can still understand you when you’re an Umbreon, remember?” Midnight said. “Yes... that’s right.” I muttered, my heart sinking. Both Midnight and I changed back to our other forms. We stood there for a moment, staring at the door in front of us. “You’re nervous, aren’t you?” Midnight whispered softly. I nodded, staring at the ground. It was amazing how good Midnight could tell what I was feeling. I looked back up at the door. Now that I was an Umbreon, it seemed even taller. Taking a deep breath, Midnight pushed the doorbell with one quivering finger. I stared. Was Midnight nervous too? After what seemed like forever, the door finally opened. A woman with long and wavy dirty-blonde hair stood in front of us. She smiled. “Do come in.” She said. I twitched at her voice. It was strangely familiar... I know I had heard it somewhere before. Midnight and I slowly walked inside. It was almost like my father’s lab, except not so dark and eerie. The woman closed the door behind us. Before the woman could even open her mouth, Midnight started talking. “I know this might be hard to believe, but I’m actually an Umbreon.” Midnight took a breath. “And this Umbreon here is actually a human.” There was a deadly silence. “Continue.” The woman simply said. My eyes wandered over to a picture hanging on the wall in front of the woman. I gawked at it. It was a small photo of me. I was running through a huge open field, laughing happily. Why did she have a picture of me? “I got turned into a human in a lab experiment, and she got turned into an Umbreon. We were wondering if you could turn us back.” Midnight said. I held my breath and waited for the woman’s answer. Just then I remembered why the huge field Midnight and I had once been in looked so familiar. It was the same field in which I was running through in the photo. I still remembered it well. I had been brought there in a little trip to the village. It had been a warm and sunny day. Not a cloud was in the sky. Not sure what I was doing, I had decided to run around and let the wind blow through my hair. But I didn’t know that somebody had taken a picture of me doing this. “Who did this to you?” The woman finally asked. “The girl’s father.” Midnight answered, a faint tone of disgust hidden in his voice as he said this. The woman raised her eyebrow. “What’s the girl’s name?” The woman asked. Midnight and I exchanged looks. “Starlight.” Midnight answered. “And my name’s Midnight.” The woman’s eyes twinkled. “Well then, of course I can change you back!” The woman said. Midnight and I sighed in relief. “You two better say your last words to each other before I turn you back, though.” Midnight and I stared at each other. “Midnight... thank you so much. I wouldn’t have been able to make it this far if it wasn’t for you. You taught me a lot about the darkness. You saved me from that evil man. And you came and rescued me from that village.” I took a deep breath. “I know I already told you this, but, I’m sorry. I’m sorry I was so foolish before and that I made you so angry. I’m sorry for everything.” “Its okay, Starlight. I already told you that I forgive you.” Midnight said softly. “But you don’t understand. I was the one that agreed to my father’s experiment. I was the one who called you using my magical necklace.” There was silence. “Yes... I guess. But if it wasn’t for all of that, I wouldn’t have...” Midnight took a deep breath. His voice was shaky. “I wouldn’t have... met you.” I stared at him. “And I wouldn’t have met you either. I know.” I whispered. “Sometimes I wish humans could be more like you.” Midnight smiled. “Good bye.” That’s when the woman took us to two small cells. After we stepped inside them, she placed herself in front of a lever. “Are both of you ready?” The woman asked. We both nodded. Without bothering to count down, the woman pulled the lever. My head felt like it was spinning, and my stomach was leaping to my throat. Everything was blurs of colors. Finally it stopped. I was lying on the ground, on my back, staring at the ceiling. I carefully stood up and looked down at myself. My skin wasn’t black. My ears were normal. I stepped out of the cell and looked at the mirror. Yes, I was human again. I turned around to face Midnight, who was now an Umbreon again. He appeared to be examining himself in the mirror too. I wasn’t quite sure if what we were seeing was real. I turned to the right to look at the woman. Tears were streaming down her cheeks. “What the?” I wasn’t able to say anything more, for the woman ran towards me and then hugged me. “Oh, Starlight. I missed you so much!” The woman cried. I stared at her, gawking. “....Mother...?” I whispered softly. The woman nodded. She hugged me again. I just stood there, staring at the mirror. I wasn’t quite sure what to do. I had just been hugged be my mother, who I hadn’t seen since forever. Midnight just stood there, staring at us. “Your father and I divorced when you were really young. We had to. I couldn’t stand him. But he got to keep you.” My mother said. “I can’t believe he used you in one of his own experiments!” I finally smiled. “Mother... can I stay with you for now on?” I asked. “I hated father too.” My mother nodded. I turned to look at Midnight. “Well... I guess you have to leave now.” I said, sighing. “In less you can stay?” Midnight shook his head. My heart sank. “Then... I guess this is good bye.” My eyes got watery. I bent down and hugged Midnight, burying my face into his fur. “Good bye.” “Um, um umbreon! Breon um!” Midnight yipped. I smiled weakly. “I’ll take that as a ‘Good bye, Starlight.’” I said. Midnight stared into my eyes, then ran off, out of the lab, to the hills beyond. I ran after him and stopped when I reached the open door. I watched him run through the hills until he was just a tiny speck in the distance. My mother walked next to me. “You have feelings for him, don’t you?” My mother whispered softly. I nodded. My mother grinned at me. “But not THAT type of feelings!” I added hastily. “He’s... he’s a pokemon.” “And does that matter?” I didn’t answer. Instead I just walked back into the lab. I picked up a dusty old book sitting on top of a desk. On the front “Quotes” was written out in cursive in ink. “Oh... I remember this book!” I said. My mother smiled. I opened it up to a blank page. Taking a pen from the top of the desk, I wrote the words that would exist in my mind forever. The words that would always remind me of my journey with Midnight. The words that would remind me of Midnight. On that blank page with my pen, I wrote carefully in cursive the words. “Our journey... is just a whisper away.” Note from author: Yep... I’m finally done with this fanfic! ^_^ Thank you to everyone who has sent me a review. Feel free to send a review if you haven’t already and tell me what you think of it. Though I must say, I’m not very happy with this fic... in the future when I have time, I might revise it. >_> No, there will not be a sequel. Well, you won’t be seeing any updated from me when TPT gets updated next, for I’ll be out of town on vacation. (And just in time for the last part of “Just A Whisper Away”!) Well, byeness. =] ~Kitten >^.^<
