Some Things Never Change

Kaci opened her eyes. Around her were trees, grass, and more trees.

“Blaze?” she called, looking for him. He returned from the set of bushes he had been approaching, and lay his head in her lap, begging to be pet. Absentmindedly she stroked him, and tried to figure out where she was. It looked like a small clearing, where the trees around her were shorter than they were at home. Which would make sense, this is the past. She stopped petting Blaze, who immediately chased a Sentret that happened to run past. Within seconds, he was almost out of sight, and Kaci jumped to her feet and ran after him. But she, small as she was, had short legs, and Blaze quickly ran out of sight. Kaci stopped, panting hard… and found herself face to face with a Spinarak. Looking around, she realized that she had stumbled right into a nest of them. So Kaci did the only sensible thing. She screamed at the top of her lungs and ran blindly through the only open space. Thinking they were following her, she looked over her shoulder, and felt her foot plunge over the edge of a cliff.
