Chapter 8

Among the trees, Commander Elm and his troops watched the sleeping quartet.
“The child has been found. Shall we shoot?” asked one of the men, Ramesly.
“No, lieutenant, I believe the threat is gone.”
“How? The child is still alive. And remember the prophecy…”
“Ramesly. Think about it! We all wanted… err… will want to win the war, and so we formed a temporary alliance, to keep this girl from winning it for Kanto. But what if that isn’t what the prophecy meant? We’re in the past now! Before the war. Think of all the people we could save, all the pain we could stop, if we just let this girl stop it before it starts! We’ve all lost loved ones, haven’t we?” There was a murmur of agreement from the troops, and all of them followed his example when he broke his gun over his knee. All but one.
Ramesly stood his ground and fired, leaving eleven dead men behind him when he walked off.
They’ll never learn. In a war, it’s kill or be killed.
And I will kill you, little Kaci.
