Kaci’s Story

Chapter 9

Sunrise

I PROMISE the chappies will get longer. Until then, I don’t own pokemon, and everybody knows I don’t, so this is the last disclaimer.

Kaci slowly opened her eyes, stretching. The sun wasn’t quite up yet, but Kaci wasn’t the first one awake. Looking around, Brock’s and Misty’s sleeping bags were occupied, but Ash’s was empty. Almost silently, Kaci slipped out of her sleeping bag and over to Ash, who was standing by a tree near the edge of the cliff they had camped on, waiting for the sunrise.

“Hey,” she said softly. Ash jumped, obviously not expecting anyone else to be up.

“Oh. Hi Kaci.”

“What’re you doing up so early?”

“Misty’s always going on about how “romantic” sunrises and sunsets are, so I thought I’d see for myself. Besides, I couldn’t sleep. I was… thinking.”

Kaci stood silent for a few minutes, searching for the answer to a new puzzle that had just arisen, while the sunrise slowly progressed.

“You really care about her, don’t you?” Kaci asked, her voice still barely more than a whisper. Ash immediately blushed and looked at the sleeping bags.

“Who?”

“Misty.”

“Of course not! That’s crazy!” He was blushing harder than ever. Kaci left it at that, and silently watched the rest of the sunrise. But when Ash left, to go back to sleep, Kaci whispered to herself, “I can tell. I always can.”
