White Flag

Disclaimer: Roses are red, violets are blue, me no own, so you no sue. (Simple enough to understand, right?)

The song will fit better if you think of it pertaining to their friendship, unlike a relationship, which is what this song was originally written for.

Song lyrics are in italics.

“Ash, I need to talk to you. Can we go for a walk?” Misty asked quietly. Surprised, Ash looked up and nodded.

They walked quietly through the forest, leaving Brock at the camp. Misty seemed reluctant to say anything, and they walked in silence for a long time before Misty stopped walking.

“So what’d you want to talk to me about?” he asked curiously.

“I…uh…I…just wanted to…uh…tell you that… uh…” she stuttered nervously, regretting her spur-of-the-moment decision.

“What?”

“I…um…likeyouasmorethanafriend,” she finished quickly. More quickly than Ash could follow.

“What?” he asked, confused. Misty, who had already been blushing, blushed an even deeper shade of red.

“I like you as… um… more than a friend,” she repeated quietly, looking at her feet. They were both silent for a minute before Ash answered her.

“I can’t…I don’t…I mean…” he struggled.

“I understand,” she said sadly, “But I still love you.” With that she turned around and headed towards camp, fighting tears.

I know you think that I shouldn’t still love you

Or tell you that.

But if I didn’t say it

Well I’d still have felt it

Where’s the sense in that?

I promise I’m not trying to make your life harder

Or return to where we were

But I will go down with this ship

And I won’t put my hands up and surrender.

There will be no white flag above my door.

I’m in love, and always will be.

Brock was staring a picture of every girl they’d ever met that he liked. A very thick  photo album. Quietly, so he didn’t notice her, she gathered all her stuff and her Togepi and walked back the way they had come, towards Goldenrod. Tears filled her eyes again as she looked at their little camp, already far away. Ash was just walking into it.

“Goodbye…” Misty whispered, then turned and walked off  into the sunset, not looking back.

I know I left too much mess and destruction to come back again.

I cause nothing but trouble

I understand if you

Can’t talk to me again.

And if you live by the rules of it’s over

Then I’m sure that that makes sense.

But I will go down with this ship

And I won’t put my hands up and surrender.

There will be no white flag above my door.

I’m in love, and always will be.

2 days later…

Misty lay on her bed, holding her teddy bear and crying. Her sisters looked in on her worriedly. Misty’d been crying a lot since she got back. When she showed up, she wouldn’t say why she’d come back, but just went straight up to the attic and pulled out her old box of stuffed animals that she hadn’t seen since she was seven. Most of the time she hadn’t talked, and got by with the least amount of conversation possible when it was absolutely necessary. She hadn’t eaten and had barely slept since she got there, Misty was probably the most unhappy person on Earth. It was even affecting her perky sisters, though the reason for that might have been the sleepless night they had had, worrying about her.

“Misty? Can we come in?” asked Daisy hesitantly.

“NO! Go away!” Misty’s voice was muffled. Ignoring her, the three older girls walked in and sat on her bed.

“Misty, why won’t you talk to us?” Daisy asked.

“Yeah, you haven’t, like, said more than three words to us since you showed up!” Lily added.

“And you’ve been neglecting your poor Togepi. Why won’t you just tell us what’s wrong?” Violet finished. Slowly Misty’s tearstained face emerged from under the covers and she leaned against Daisy. The latter wrapped her arms around her younger sister and listened as she told her story.

And when we meet,

Which I’m sure we will.

All that was there

Will be there still.

I’ll let it pass,

And hold my tongue.

And you will think

That I’ve moved on...

A week later…

Misty’s sisters had been very supportive, and seemed to realize that to her, it wasn’t the same as one of their weekly boyfriends. She had stopped crying as much, and was actually eating and sleeping. The box of stuffed dolls were back in their home in the attic, except for the bear. One of the more odd things was that she had insisted on burying her little blue journal outside. She may not have forgotten about Ash, but she had succeeded in pushing him to the back of her mind.

Misty was washing the dishes when she heard the doorbell. And got a huge surprise when she opened the door.

“A-Ash?” she managed to choke out. Then, gathering her wits, she slammed the door in his face.

“I don’t know what you’re doing here, but I want you to leave!” she shouted through the door.

“Aww, c’mon Myst! I need to talk to you!” he pleaded, but she refused to open the door.

DING-DONG!

DING-DONG!

DING-DONGDINGDONGDINGDONGDING-DONG!

Ash pushed the little button over and over again. Finally Misty couldn’t take it anymore and (making a mental note to destroy the doorbell) opened the door.

“You don’t have anything to say that I want to hear, Ash Ketchum.” He didn’t answer at first.

“Fine,” Misty said, starting to close the door.

“Wait! I’m sorry! I’m sorry I didn’t tell you the truth!” Misty stopped and opened the door again.

“And what would that be?” she asked coldly. The tone of her voice set Ash back a little, but he managed to stutter it out.

“I l-lied. About what I said in the forest. I d-d-do love you. I was just afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“Ruining our friendship. But I managed to do that anyway.”

Almost managed to do,” she corrected him.

“You mean we’re still friends?”

“Hopefully more,” she replied, and drew him inside, “You do realize that you were stupid, right? What did you expect to happen?”

“Uhh… That we would just forget it would ever happen?”

“Stupid… Come on, let’s watch a movie.”

When Daisy, Lily, and Violet got home from their shopping trip at the mall, Misty’s head was on Ash’s shoulder, and they were holding hands, fast asleep.

“Looks like they made up,” Daisy remarked quietly, as they tip-toed past the two teens and into their own rooms upstairs. Violet stopped for a moment to turn off the movie, which was still playing, before going up herself.

“I just love happy endings,” Ash’s electric mouse said in Pika-talk as he folded up his video camera and left the room to go eat some ketchup.

I’m in love, and always will be

I’ve had this idea since before Christmas, lol, and now, umm… like four months later, here it is. March 9, 2004. Sad huh?

Like, hate, whatever, anything’s welcome!
