Chapter 3

Tearful Good-bye's and Fond Farewells

"Life's a long lost list of last good-bye's."

-The Cutter, Runrig

The scene in the streets of Viridian was a chaotic one. People were running here and there, riots were being held everywhere, the police were trying to contain the mobs, but had little success. People were trying to attack, to Ash it seemed like kill, the soldiers that entered the city.

"Look out!" he heard Dom yell as he pulled Ash down just as a beer bottle came flying over them and crashed into a store window. Ash looked up slowly.

"Thanks." he said to Dom. Who just nodded and banged on the roof of the truck. It roared froward. John appeared to have no consideration for the people that sprang out of the way.

They arrived at the recruiting office just in time before a mob nearly attacked them.

Lex, who was breathing heavily said, "The people of Viridian seem a little "chipper" today."

They walked up to the desk where a young woman was sitting.

"Hi." Dom said. Were here to–

"Recruit for the army." she finished.

"Yes." said Dom.

"How old are each of you?" she asked.

Ash winced. He forgot that you had to be at least 16 to enlist.

John stepped forward. "Were all 16," he lied.

She smiled. "No you're not."

Ash winced again.

"I can't let you recruit for the main army." she said. "But," she reached into a file cabinet and pulled out a file and opened it. She handed them each a piece of paper.

"These are the last mercenary divisions in Kanto. The directions are on the back."

After thanking the girl many times, they left the station.

Ash looked at the back of his paper. He was to report to Fort Kaiser.

Anyone else going to Fort Kaiser? He asked.

"I am." said Dom.

Ash looked at John and Lex hopefully. They shook their heads sadly.

"We're going to Fort Weedle, in Saffron." sad Lex. Who than went on to mumble about how stupid the name was…

In all the time they had been friends, Ash had never had to say good bye to them. For good. Ash walked up Lex and gave him a firm hug. Lex returned it, and Ash said,

"Come back alive?"

"Sure." said Lex. "Maybe after all this is all over, we can swap some war stories."

Ash walked up to John and gave him a firm handshake.

"Good luck." said John.

"You too." Ash replied. After Dom had said goodbye, John and Lex got in the truck.

"You guys need a lift?" John asked.

"No thanks." Ash said. "Fort Kaiser is here in Viridian."

"Okay." he replied. And as the truck was pulling away, Lex leaned out the window and raised his fist.

"Take the charge!" he yelled.

Ash and Dom raised their fists in return, and the truck soon vanished from sight.

"Well, I guess it's just you and me Ash," said Dom as he turned around.

"Yeah. I guess so." Ash replied

"I'm gonna go check this place out," Dom said. "You coming?"

Ash shook his head. "You go on, I got something else to do real quick."

"Ok. See you later." Dom said as he walked away.

The scene in the streets had calmed down considerably, although police still could be seen walking here and there.

Ash gulped as he stood in front of the Viridian Hotel. How was Misty going to take this news? He was a soldier. Soldiers die. However he had to face her. Slowly, Ash stepped inside. He walked up to the front desk where a man was sitting.

"Can you give me the room number of a Misty Waterflower?" he asked.

"Let me see," said the clerk as he began to type on his computer. "I'm sorry, we don't have anyone here by that name." he replied.

"Oh. Thanks anyway." Ash said as he walked out of the hotel. He sighed heavily as he began to walk away. He took out the piece of paper that he got at the recruiting station. On the back were directions to Fort Kaiser. He slowly began to walk. He had to face reality. He would never see Misty again.

About thirty minutes later, Ash found himself in front of Fort Kaiser. He was about to go in when he heard a voice behind him. A VERY familiar one.

"Ash?"

He turned around and saw to his surprise…

"Brock!!" he said.

Ash walked up to him and gave him a firm hug.

"What the heck are you doing here?" Ash asked with astonishment.

"I would ask you the same question!" he replied.

"I volunteered just a few minutes ago." Ash said.

"Oh, well that makes sense." Brock said. " I've been here for about two days now.

"Brock, have you seen Misty around?" Ash asked.

"Yeah, I saw her yesterday, we had lunch and talked a little.

Ash walked up to his friend and grabbed his shoulders and began to shake him vigorously.

"Where is she? Do you know? Is she still in town?" Ash asked while continuing to shake Brock.

"I don't know! I don't know!" he replied the best he could.

"Oh…Ok. Said Ash sadly.

Brock now fully recovered asked, "You two are pretty close now huh?

"No! What makes you think that?" Ash answered quickly.

"Don't try to deny it!" Brock said with a smile on his face.

"Oh fine," said Ash reluctantly. "I just wanted to say good-bye to her and tell her how I feel before…you know.

"Yeah." Brock said. "I know"

"I don't want to die without her truly knowing that I……. love her."

Brock smiled. "I've waited four years for you to say that."

"Ash!"

Ash turned to see Dom walking toward them.

"The commander wants to see us!" Dom said.

"Okay. But first I'd like you to meet Brock." Ash said.

"It's nice to meet you!" said Dom extending his hand.

"Likewise." said Brock, shaking Dom's hand.

"Let's go see the commander." Ash said.

"Right this way" said Dom. He led them into a small tent about eight feet tall and ten feet wide. A young man was hunched over something with his back turned to them. Dom spoke first.

"I've brought Ash to see you sir," he said.

The young man turned around slowly, and Ash gave an exclamation of surprise.

"Tracy?!?!?!"

"Hi Ash, it's good to see you again!" Tracy replied.

"Wha- How?" said Ash. "I thought you went back to Johto."

"I did, but when I heard about the war I enlisted. The Johto Army had no room for me there so I came here and started my own faction."

"What faction?" Ash asked.

"The Third Infantry Militia Division!" Tracy said proudly. "Also know as The Kaiser Squad. We work separate from the main army."

"Great!" Ash said. "Where do we start?"

"We're going to Vermilion once we get the word," said Tracy. "But before I say anything more, let me introduce you to the troops."

They left the tent and walked into a bigger building. Inside there were at least 50 young men. They all stood up and saluted as they entered.

"At ease." said Tracy. They all sat back down. "I'd like to introduce to Brock, Dom, and Ash."

Hi's, Yo's, and Wuz up's were heard throughout the room.

"Carry on," said Tracy. And all the troops once again went back to what they were doing.

Ash however couldn't get over how young they were.

"How old are they?" he asked Tracy.

"I'm 19, and I'm the oldest. He replied. "That one there," he pointed to a boy playing with another soldier, "is nine. They came here when the recruiting stations turned them down."

A beeping noise was heard on a desk next to them. Everything went quite in the room; Tracy walked over and pulled a piece of paper out of a fax machine. He read it and his face lit up.

"Boys!" he said looking up, let's move out!!!!

Wild cheers and shouts were heard all throughout the barracks. The troops immediately grabbed their bags and weapons and rushed out the door. They began to load up in the many trucks that were lined up outside.

"Here we go." Ash said. Brock and Dom smiled.

"Let's do it!" They said.

Ash nodded and hopped onto the truck with Dom and Brock. He turned his head and looked at Viridian City one last time, when from behind him he heard…

"Ash!!!!!!!"

He turned around to see Misty running towards him. He jumped down off the truck and began to run towards her. She jumped into his arms, which caught her and held her firmly. Tears were streaming down her cheeks.

"Ash!" She said tearfully, "don't go!"

"Misty!" he replied taking her head in his hands "I will come back! I will come back." And with that he pressed his lips against hers. When the kiss was over, he looked at her again. "I love you." he said. After giving her another kiss he turned around and got back in the truck.

Misty fell to her knees sobbing, as the line of trucks slowly disappeared out of sight down the road.
