Disclaimer: If I had a penny for everytime I read a disclaimer then I would have many pennies, but I wouldn't be rich. I don't own Pokémon. This story was written in March 2004.

It's been exactly 24 hours since Professor Oak found Pikachu in its Pokéball and now Prof. Oak is going back to the Pokémon Center to pick Pikachu up so he might be able to train it and give it to a trainer in a few days. Finally, he gets to the center, parks his bike by the entrance, and goes in to find Nurse Joy behind the front desk typing something on her computer. Oak goes up to her and asks,

"Good morning Nurse Joy, how are you doing today?"

"Oh I'm doing fine. Thank you for asking. What about you?"

"Great, uh, I came here to see if the Pikachu was ready to leave the Center," Oak said.

"It sure is. Let me just go and get it for you," Joy said.

"Thanks Nurse Joy," Oak said as he saw her go to the back room. Less than a minute later, Nurse Joy came back holding Pikachu in her arms.

"Here you go, Professor," Joy said as she handed him Pikachu.

"Thank you Nurse Joy," Oak said to her. But as soon as Nurse Joy handed him Pikachu it quickly shocked Prof. Oak with a Thundershock attack.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH," Oak screamed. Finally, when the Thundershock subsided, Oak put Pikachu on the counter and he asked,

"Why did it do that?"

"I don't know. It didn't shock me. Actually, I think it really likes me. I don't know why it wouldn't like you," Joy said.

"Maybe it didn't shock you because you cared for it and saved its life," Oak said.

"Even if that's true, then why would it shock you?" Joy asked.

"Probably because it has lost its trust in most humans. Think about it, it was stuck inside a Pokéball for who knows how long before I came along. It was a human that did this to it, so naturely, it doesn't trust humans anymore," Oak said.

"I see. But Professor, what will you do?"

"I still want to take it with me. I just hope that this Pikachu eventually warms up to humans. But in the mean time, do you have any rubber gloves that I could wear while I carry the Pikachu?"

"Oh of course I do. Just a minute," Joy said and went to the back to get the gloves.

While she was gone, Pikachu said while looking straight at Oak,

"Pi pikachu pi ka, ka pi chu!"

"And just what is that suppossed to mean?" Oak asked but just then Nurse Joy came back with two pink rubber gloves that Oak could wear.

"Here you go Professor," Joy said handing Oak the gloves.

"Thank you Nurse Joy," Oak said and then put on the gloves. Once they were on, Oak picked up Pikachu and held it as far away from his body as he could.

"Well, bye Nurse Joy, I'll see you later," Oak said heading for the door.

"Bye bye Professor, and good luck with that Pikachu!" Joy said loudly because Oak was already across the room. Then Oak left the center, put Pikachu in the basket on his bike, got on and started to pedal down the road towards Pallet Town.

On the way there Oak tried to talk to Pikachu.

"Pikachu, I know that you don't trust humans, but you don't have anything to worry about. My name is Professor Samuel Oak and I'm a Pokémon researcher. I love Pokémon and I wouldn't do anything to hurt you. All I ask is that you trust me that I won't hurt you in any way. Can you do that?"

"Pika chu," it said not looking at the professor.

"Uh, is that a yes or a no?"

"Pi kachu," it said still not looking at Oak.

"I hope you trust me before the trainers come," Oak said finally. He nor Pikachu said anything more the rest of the way until they got to Oak's lab.

"This is my lab where I study Pokémon behavior and it will also be your home for the next couple of days," Oak said as he was parking the bike at the base of his long stairway up to his lab. He then got off the bike and, with the rubber gloves still on, he picked Pikachu up and, holding it at arms length, carried it up the steps to the entrance into his lab. Then he went inside and headed for the fields which were behind his lab. Once outside he set Pikachu down and said,

"This is where all of the other Pokémon roam around and play. How about you go and try to make some friends with some of the other Pokémon." Pikachu then went off at a trot down the field and saw a Charmander. Meanwhile Oak was still standing there observing Pikachu and what it did with the Charmander, but it wasn't peaceful for long.

After Pikachu and Charmander said some things, Pikachu sent out a Thundershock attack that hit Charmander head on. This got Charmander mad and it sent out a Flamethrower attack that burned Pikachu but not so badly. Oak knew that he had to stop the two Pokémon from fighting as soon as possible so he ran over to the Pokémon and asked,

"Why are you two fighting?"

"Char man der char man," it said in an angry tone.

"Pi pi ka chu pi ka chu pi chu!" Pikachu said loudly. Oak could tell that they were really mad at eachother.

"Charmander, Pikachu, stop your fighting!" Oak yelled but Pikachu had already sent out a Thundershock attack at Charmander, but instead of hitting Charmander, it hit Oak. After it was over, Oak fainted in front of the two Pokémon then Charmander said a few more things and left while Pikachu said some more things at it.

Once Oak woke up, he got up from the ground and said,

"Pikachu, I hate to do this because I know you don't like it, but if you're not going to behave, I'll have to put you back into your Pokéball," Oak said as he got out Pikachu's Pokéball from a pocket in his lab coat. He then pointed it at Pikachu, but before Oak could say anything, Pikachu shocked Oak again with another Thundershock attack.

While Oak was down on the ground, Pikachu ran off and Oak didn't see it anymore that day, until meal time that is.

At meal time, Pikachu came running down the field and started eating the Pokémon food that was in the nearest bowl it found. After it was done eating, it went off down the field again and Oak didn't see it anymore that day.

Two days later...

Pikachu has gotten in many fights and shocked Oak many times over the past two days. Today is when the trainers come to pick up thier first Pokémon and Oak hasn't made much progress with Pikachu. It still doesn't really trust Oak, and most of the Pokémon at Oak's lab really don't like Pikachu because of all the fights its gotten into over the past two days.

Oak figures that it can't stay here much longer or all of the other Pokémon might do something to kick Pikachu out. Not to mention that Oak has to give Pikachu to a trainer today or one of the trainers will be very disappointed that he or she didn't get a Pokémon, and Oak didn't want that.

So Oak knows that he has to get Pikachu into its Pokéball really soon. Another thing that he was worried about was that Pikachu might shock one or more of the trainers that come to his lab today. As Oak was thinking on a way to get Pikachu inside its Pokéball, Oak remembered something about Pikachu. He remembered that it really loved ketchup so he would try to lure Pikachu with ketchup and then get it into its Pokéball.

So Oak got a big bottle of ketchup and put it right outside his back door, which led to the fields. Then, Oak hid behind a bush and waited for Pikachu to show up. It didn't take long so within another minute Pikachu appeared, went to the bottle, opened it, and started to squirt the ketchup into his mouth.

While Pikachu was distracted, and with its back to Oak's bush, Oak jumped out and yelled,

"Pikachu return!" and then the red energy beam hit Pikachu on the back and within a few seconds, Pikachu was back inside its Pokéball. As soon as it was in there, Pikahcu tried to get out, but Oak held onto it tight. He had to think fast or Pikachu would come out of its ball again.

Oak quickly ran inside to his lab where the three Pokéballs that held Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle were set around in a triangle. In the center of the triangle was a hole that Oak put the ball in and then the top of the hole shut, making sure that Pikachu would stay in there until a trainer came to get it.

Ding dong, Oak heard the door bell ring inside his lab.

"Oh that must be the first trainer to get his first Pokémon," Oak said aloud.

The End.
