Chapter 2

The Secret

Celest was woken up by the smell of garbage. She wrinkled her nose and then opened her eyes. The last thing she remembered was Libby?s face in Heather?s living room. Now she was propped up against a brick wall in what looked like a dark alley way in the middle of the night.

?How in the world did I get here?? she asked herself. As if trying to answer her question, Celest heard a rustle coming from the pile of trash that was dumped out of the trash can. ?Ah! Who?s there?? Celest asked in a panicky voice, moving to the other side of the alley.

She heard grunting and then a small red tail popped out of the pile of trash. Celest watched interestingly as next white feet appeared. A small, red rat-like creature came out of the pile of trash with a piece of bread in its longs teeth.

The rat was about to take a bite when it saw Celest staring at it with utmost curiosity.

The rat looked at her for a while and then suddenly, its face lit up. ?You?re here!? it cried.

?Ah!? Celest backed up against the wall even more, and started to mutter to herself that this was all a hallucination.

The rat lowered its head and said in a solemn voice, ?Sorry I scared you. Actually I wouldn?t blame you. Your probably don?t get many talking rattata?s on Earth do you?? asked the rat.

Celest was still scared, but managed to conjure up enough courage to speak. ?Wh-what?s a ? a rattata?? she asked in a shaky voice.

?Me. I?m a rattata, well sort of. I?m a special kind of rattata,? the rat said.

            ?Wh- what do you mean??

?Most rattata?s are blue, and I?m red. And I can talk too, but that?s only because my old master taught me how. He wanted me to be special, not that I already was?? the rat looked up and smiled at Celest. ?Sorry I didn?t introduce myself, I?m Moo. Got the name from my master?s three year old daughter who was just learning to speak.?

?I?m-? The creature called Moo cut Celest off.

?Celest McFerend, I know. In fact I know a lot about you,? he said.

            ?How do you-?

?Don?t worry about how I know, all you have to do is get to know this place and know how to come back before you wake up on Earth again,? Moo said, once again cutting into Celest?s sentence.

Celest looked at Moo dumbfounded. Moo sighed. ?Hold on just a minute,? with those words he dived into the pile of trash.

Celest just sat there, trying to collect her thoughts, and get everything situated.

Moo had said wake up, so was this all just a dream? Yeah that?s it! It was all just a stupid dream, and she would wake up and continue to never go to sleep, and live a happy life.

At that moment Moo came out of the trash, but in his mouth was a small red rectangular object. He tossed it to Celest.

?What is it?? asked Celest looking at the device.

?Open it,? Moo said. ?And point it at me.?

Celest looked on the side of the gadget and pressed the small red button she found. The thing opened to reveal all sorts of buttons, but when Celest pointed the red device at Moo, the big blue light at the top flashed twice, and beeped. This was followed by an automated voice.

The voice said, ?Rattata, the rat pokemon. It bites anything when it attacks. Small and very quick, it is a common sight in many places.? As it said this, Celest noticed a picture appear on the small screen inside the device. It was Moo, but different in one way. Wherever Moo had red fur, the picture had blueish-purple fur.

Celest closed the device and began to examine it more. ?I still don?t know what it is,? she said.

?It?s called a pokedex, and it?s used for identifying pokemon. Whenever you see one you don?t know, just pull out you dex, and point it at that pokemon. It should tell you all about that species,? Moo explained.

?Wait, new word! What?s a pokemon?? Celest asked.

Moo smiled. ?Pokemon? You don?t know what pokemon are?? he asked chuckling a bit.

Celest shook her head. ?No I don?t,? she replied.

Moo broke out laughing a little bit. ?Okay, nice one Celest! You had me fooled there for a moment, but I know you?re joking.?

Celest shook her head again. ?No I?m not. I?ve never heard of Pokemon before.?

Moo stopped laughing and looked at Celest. ?You?re really not joking, are you?? he asked.

       Celest shook her head.

Moo sighed and then looked at the dark night sky. ?Why? Of all the people you had to pick one that has no idea, what so ever, what pokemon are!?

Celest frowned at Moo and then said, ?I can learn you know.?

Moo looked at her for a long time and then smiled. ?Your right, but pokemon are all just so complicated. I couldn?t tell you everything in one sitting. So, I got an idea. I want you to learn about pokemon on your own,? he said.

?Dose that mean your going to just leave me here all by myself?? Celest asked worriedly.

?No! Why would I do that! I?m going to stay with you, just I?m going to pose as you pokemon while you go on a pokemon journey,? Moo explained.

Celest was confused, and Moo could see this. ?Okay, just so you don?t make a fool of yourself, I?ll lay out the basic guide line. Pokemon are creatures that inhabit this world. They have special powers to protect them selves in the wild and battle. People here catch pokemon with a ball called a pokeball, and then they use them in a sport called pokemon battling. There are many kinds of pokemon, so many I?m not going to just name them off my top of my head. So your mission is to learn all about pokemon while you can. And then we?ll get down to the real business of why you came here.?

?How did I get here in the first place though?? Celest asked.

Moo looked at Celest?s chest. At the crystal she wore around her neck. Celest looked down at it. ?What, this? I found it in the mud,? she said.

?For a reason, so you could come here. Celest, you are the chosen one. But I?ll get into that later. Right now, because I don?t know when you?ll wake up back on Earth, I?ve got to tell you how to get here,? Moo said. ?The first thing you need to know is to never lose that necklace. It?s your ticket here. With out it you won?t be able to come here. But also know that you can?t just come here whenever you want to, you have to be asleep.?

?But, I never sleep!? Celest protested. ?If I go to sleep I?m bound to miss something!?

?If you don?t go to sleep you?ll miss out on more than just a fight between some bears in the woods out side your house, you?ll miss out on an adventure.? Moo said gently.

?How do I know I can trust you? and how did you know I lived next to the woods?? Celest asked, stunned.

?Like I said, I know lots about you,? Moo smiled, but the smile disappeared fast. ?Just be careful. Every time you fall asleep from now on, you will come here, you can?t just choose, it happens weather you want to or not. And the rules for here are the same.

When you fall asleep on Earth you come here. Fall asleep here you go to Earth.?

?But you didn?t say anything about me going to sleep this time just waking up back on Earth, as you say,? Celest said.

?That?s because you passed out. That?s different. Since people will get worried about you, you will have to wake up sometime. When you get back here, the sun will just be rising so I might be asleep. But I?ll be here. Now go wake up on Earth, I don?t think your friends and family will like it if you are gone too long?? But Moo?s words trailed off and the alley way became a blur. Celest felt like she was falling into the wall. She could see her body lying on the ground, and Celest felt like she might scream, but at that moment in a swirl of colors surrounded her, everything went black.

Celest groaned and blinked her eyes open. She was cold and wet. And she was surrounded by people. The people all cheered.

?What happened?? Celest asked as she sat up.

?You swallowed too much helium and passed out,? Libby said.

?I knew that game was dangerous!? Nikie said.

Eric rolled his eyes. ?Yeah, whatever,? he said.

Celest looked around at the people staring at her. But she wasn?t thinking of them. She was thinking about Moo, and what he had said. Was it all a dream? Should she risk going to sleep that night to see if it was real? How was she going to explain to her mom about the sudden change of events?

Then it hit her, like a cold stone in the face. Her mom! She had promised her mom she would be home by 10:00.

?Libby, what time is it?? Celest asked frantically.

Libby looked at her watch. ?10:35. Why??

?Oh shoot!? Celest jumped up and pushed through the crowd; she reached the door and turned around. ?By the way happy birthday Heather!? and with that she was out the door in a flash.

Celest ran through the city and through the woods, and beet yet another storm to her house, where she slammed the door behind her.

?You?re late,? came a voice from the kitchen.

Celest walked toward the kitchen and saw her mom washing dishes. ?Mom, I am so sorry! I got sidetracked! I didn?t mean to ??

Celest?s mom slammed a plate down and turned around. Celest could see her mom?s were red as if she had been getting ready to cry.

?Celest, do you know what did to me?? she asked harshly.

            ?Mom, I?m sorry-?

?Sorry isn?t going to cut it. I was so worried about you! I was afraid someone had kidnapped you or you were lost. I was about to call the police ??

?Mom,? Celest sighed. ?I am sorry beyond reason. I promise it will never happen again.?

?I hope not,? Celest?s mom said weakly. She turned back to the dishes but kept talking to Celest. ?You know, your father, did the same thing to me. Ran off to join the army. And you know what happened??

?Ma I know what happ-? Celest was close to tears and her mom kept talking.

?He got himself killed that?s what! And I know what he did was for a good reason, but, he?s gone Celest, and he?s never coming back. And I don?t know what I would do with myself if that ever happened to you.? Celest walked forward and hugged her mom. They cried for a long time until finally Celest?s mom said. ?Well I got to get to bed. Good night. And she walked into her room.

?Good night mom, I love you,? Celest said after her.

?I love you too Celest.? And she turned into her room.

Celest stood there for a while and then ran up the stairs to her room. She opened her drawer and pulled out pajama?s her grandma had bought her a couple of years ago as a fatal attempt to get Celest to sleep. She put them on, and unfortunately realized they were too small.

?They?ll have to do,? she said to herself. And for the first time in American history, Celest McFerend climbed into bed and fell asleep. As she did this, her crystal glowed brighter and brighter, taking her to a whole other world?

To be continued?
