Chapter Three: Welcome to Viridian! “We’re almost there,” said Jared. Darren finally decided to ask Jared the question that was in his mind. “How did you beat the Pewter Gym Leader with a Flying type?” Jared grinned. “This is my cool secret. I went to Mt. Moon and caught a Geodude, a Zubat, and a Clefairy. Then I returned to Viridian Forest to get some grass types. I got a cool Venonat. So I used Venonat and Clefairy. His Pokemon didn’t stand a chance!” “What types does he have?” “Oh, he has Rock types. He has, well you’ll see when you battle him.” Finally they were off of Route 1. “Here we are at Viridian. I have to heal my Clefairy. You guys can check out the city.” Jared disappeared inside of the Pokemon Center. Darren and Melina looked around. “Hey, this place has a Gym!” Darren tried the door but it was locked. “Hmm. Maybe it’s jammed.” “No, youngster, it’s for Pokemon trainers who have beaten the first 7 gym leaders. This is the final gym leader.” An old man walked up to them. “Oh, we’re just starting. Thanks.” “No problem.” Then the two went to explore Route 22. Melina took a guide book out of her backpack. “Route 22 leads to the Pokemon League Reception Gate. Then it leads to Route 23 and then to Victory Road, which holds extremely strong Pokemon. Then, after traveling that, you’ll end up at Indigo Plateau, where the Elite Four waits.” Darren shivered at thinking about fighting the Elite Four with his Pokemon right now. “Hey, don’t leave me, you guys!” Jared was running up to them. “That’s Route 22. We’re headed to Route 2. C’mon!” Jared leaded the way with Melina and Darren following behind. Darren was glad he had such cool friends traveling with him. “Viridian Forest. This is where you can have some tough battles.” Mumbled Jared. Melina looked around. Bugs were everywhere. She shivered. Then she felt something crawling on her. “Oh, I hate bugs!” She screamed. “Shh!” someone said from behind them. It was a kid with a Samurai outfit on. “I am Samurai. Sam for short. Anyway, tell her to keep quiet because she can wake up the Beedrills!” A big bug flew by. Darren took out his Pokedex and scanned it. “Beedrill, the Stinger Pokemon. It is the evolved from of Kakuna. After a long time, these Pokemon hatch out of their Kakuna shell. Strengths: Grass, Psychic, Bug. Weaknesses: Ghost, Flying, Fighting, Fire, Poison, Ground, Rock.” Another flying bug flew past. Melina squealed. “Is that a Beedrill, too?” asked Darren. “Oh no, that’s a Butterfree.” “Butterfree, the evolved form of Metapod. Like Beedrill, it also hatches from their Metapod shell. Strengths: Grass, Bug, Psychic, Fighting. Weaknesses: Ghost, Flying, Electric, Rock, Fire, Fighting.” “Cool! I wanna catc-“ “Shhh!!!” Suddenly they heard a loud droning noise. “Beedrill call…” whispered Sam. “Where’s it coming from?” Everyone looked around, but they saw no Beedrills. Suddenly Sam’s face went white. “What?” whispered Jared. “The-The-They’re-They’re above us…” The four looked up. Beedrills were EVERYWHERE! Melina almost screamed but Darren put his hand over her mouth. “Don’t make a sound…” They stood completely still as the swarm hovered over them for awhile, and then flew off. “Whew…” said Sam. “Come with me. We’ll be safe in my cabin.” “You LIVE here?” said Jared, surprised. Sam nodded. “Yes, I’ve been waiting for trainers from Pallet. I like to challenge them to test my skills-and theirs. “We’re all from Pallet.” Said Darren. “Oh? Then maybe we’ll battle, but not at the moment.” They walked through some shrubs until they stumbled into a cabin. “You may stay here for the night, if you wish. I will show you my Pokemon in the morning.” The next day Samurai and Melina were ready to face off. “Go, Pidgey!” cried Melina. “I choose you, Pinsir!” smiled Samurai. “Oh, he’s got a Pinsir!” said Jared. “I should battle him. That would be a remarkable battle.” Darren took out his Pokedex. “Pinsir, the Stag Beetle Pokemon. It can crush almost anything with its strong pincers. Strengths: Grass, Psychic. Weaknesses: Ghost, Flying, Fighting, and Fire. ” “Look out, Melina that Pinsir is tough,” said Darren. “Pidgey, Gust!” Boom! It was effective, but the attack wasn’t strong enough. “Child’s Play! Pinsir, use Swords Dance, and then Slash!” SLASH!!!! Pidgey fainted! “Oh! Go, Ratata!” Ratata jumped out. “Use Quick Attack!” Ratata ran at full speed and slammed into Pinsir. Surprisingly it did considerable damage. “Lucky Shot! Use Tackle, Pinsir!” Boom! Ratata flew back a few feet from the blow and fainted. “Go, Squirtle!” Squirtle came out, ready to play. “Aim, then use Water Gun!” The attack made Pinsir faint! “It’s not over! Go, Metapod! Use Harden, and then Tackle!” Metapod hardened up, and then tackled Squirtle. Squirtle took a mean blow. “Now, Squirtle use…” but Melina couldn’t finish because there was smoke everywhere! “To win all battles with power and might! To make all people shake with fright! To put your Pokemon in our pocket! Listen world, our name’s Team Rocket!” “Koji!” “Jeni!” “You think you’ll win, but you cannot! We’ll watch you give your best shot!” “Oh no, here’s Team Rocket again!” Yes, it was them alright, but now the battle would REALLY heat up…
