Chapter Eight: Legend of the Moon Stone! It was early morning. Nurse Joy had made some breakfast. “Nurse Joy? But we’re not in Viridian anymore!” said Melina. “I’m the Viridian Joy’s cousin.” Said Nurse Joy sweetly. “My relatives all keep Pokemon centers. Here, take this.” She handed Darren a map of the Kanto region. “Oh thanks, I really need this.” After they had eaten and washed up, they headed out to Mt. Moon. A girl was there, tending to her Gloom. “Wow, a Gloom! I would LOVE one of those!” said Melina, rushing over. “Hi, I’m Melina. Who are you?” “Oh, hi I’m Sharon.” “I love your Gloom! I’ve always wanted one.” Sharon sighed. “My Gloom doesn’t really like me.” As Sharon tried to feed it a poke’ pellet it turned away and smacked it from her hand. She began to cry. “ I don’t know why, but I’m thinking of letting it go…Wait! Do you want my Gloom?” Melina brightened. “Sure!” Sharon took out a Pokeball and put Gloom back inside, and then handed it to Melina. “Take good care of Gloom.” Said Sharon. “Thanks again!” smiled Melina. Wart was behind them, pouting. He had to come along until Team Rocket decided to attack, and then they would take Toak back. Darren was sad because he only had two Pokemon and Melina had about seven or eight. Jared was feeling excited to finally reach Cerulean and beat Misty to control Fearow. When they walked into the cave, their hopes were dashed. “Oh, it’s so scary in here!” screamed Melina, her voice echoing deeper and deeper into the dark cave. Then suddenly, somewhere inside, they heard a loud scream. “What was that?” asked Darren. “Duh, it was a scream.” Said Jared. The scream went again. Darren and the others followed the screaming to an open cavern, where they found a whole bunch of Zubat flying around something huddled on the ground. “What is that…Oh! It’s a guy!” cried Melina. “Go, Fearow! Whirlwind those Zubat away!” But Fearow didn’t listen. “Oh, it’s no use…” moaned Jared. Darren threw out Eevee. “Eevee, Tail Whip, and then Sand Attack!” Eevee whipped its tail around so the Zubats’ defenses were lowered, then it hit them with sand. “Go, Pokeball!” Darren threw an empty Pokeball and it caught one of the Zubat. The ball wiggled for a while, and then it flashed red, signaling that the catch was fair. “Yippe!” smiled Darren. The other Zubats flew off, scared. Meanwhile Melina and Jared were helping the man up. “Are you okay?” asked Jared. Suddenly the man sprung up and hugged Jared, who was screaming from shock. “OH THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!” grinned the guy. “I’m Seymour, Seymour the scientist! If you hadn’t shown up, I would’ve been gone for sure!” Jared was still in shock. “Sir, you must’ve done something pretty bad for those Zubat to attack you.” “Oh, I didn’t do anything. Someone has been stringing lights inside of the caves, and the Pokemon don’t like them at all! Poor Paras have been planting their mushrooms to grow but the lights are drying them up!” “Oh, that’s terrible! Why would they do such a thing?” asked Melina. Seymour looked deep into her eyes, which made her queasy. “I’m afraid it’s because of the moon stone.” “The moon stone?” repeated Darren in that clueless tone of his. “Yes. Legend has it that the moon stone came from outer space inside of the moon stone. Well, that’s my legend, anyway.” The three looked at each other in nervousness of this guy. Suddenly they heard some loud laughing. They turned to see T.R! “To win all battles with power and might! To make all people shake with fright! To put your Pokemon in our pocket! Listen world, our name’s Team Rocket!” “Koji!” “Jeni!” “You think you’ll win, but you cannot! We’ll watch you give your best shot!” Everyone moaned. “We strung the lights in the cave,” smiled Koji. Jeni laughed evily. Then Wart went running off to them. “Hey guys! It’s me, Wart!” Koji and Jeni looked really puzzled. “But…that’s Wart…” said Jeni, pointing to Toak. “Toak can’t talk! Didn’t you notice?” “Guess not.” “Anyway, now that I’m here, let-” But Wart couldn’t finish because Toak had tackled him to the ground. “Ouch! Hey!” Melina grabbed her Poke’ball and returned Toak. “Now, as I was saying…” said Koji, but suddenly a Clefairy came running by and smacked him in the face. “Hey! That’s a rare Pokemon! Let’s snatch it!” smiled Wart. “Not so fast! You’re not snatching anything! Go, Eevee and Zubat!” “Oh, you want a battle, do you? Go, Grimer!” Grimer waited for his teammate to come out but it never came. “Sorry, Grimer. You have to battle alone. Seviper got poisoned by this little twerp and his stupid Nidoran.” Darren knew this was his chance to show everyone who seemed unfortunate in the cave that he could really rumble, so he decided to use some different techniques. But while he was thinking of some a loud crash rumbled throughout the caves. Everyone spun around to see an extremely large Pokemon crashing into the walls of the cave. “Oh, no! Stop! No!” cried Seymour. “Someone help me!” No one moved so apparently only he knew what was going on. “This Graveler is confused by the light! If it crashes around, it’ll get hurt!” Suddenly a very loud rumbling sound began. Seymour’s eyes already looked big by the glasses, but when he heard the sound his eyes were HUGE. “The cave is crumbling in!” yelled Jeni, grabbing onto Koji. Koji blushed and tried to call back Grimer to run, but a rock fell and knocked both of the rockets out. Wart screamed and ran into Eevee, who tried to run and tripped Darren. He fell to the ground on his knees as a large boulder the size of Texas landed where he was originally standing. When the smoke cleared, the heroes knew it was the end.
