Prologue: The Dream

Deep within his mind; battling with the rushing waves of thought that constantly besieged him, the young Mewtwo curled further up into his foetal position and ignored the muffled cries of the outside. His spine; stiffened with the posture he had adopted since his first time of awareness, clamoured to be straightened, but he ignored it; willing sleep to come. Then; he could dream.

Dream... dream about her...

Slowly, he slipped lower and lower into unconsciousness; unaware that the sounds outside had been the scientists concerned about their monitors; keeping a close check on his breath and heart-rate; and ultimately, inducing him into the coma he had willed for. Now, he was aware of solid surroundings which he never experienced in his more lucid states of awareness. She had reached in and taken him to another world; one where he could see! and breathe! and feel emotions.

Indeed, the first time she had ever greeted him,
("Those are words! They're talking!")
he had uncurled in shock; able to perform such a quick movement because he was in her place. Her 'Remember place'. He felt he could stay here forever; because it was only here that he felt truly awake.

Before him was a light. It shone a bright sun-yellow; making him blink and quickly shield his eyes with a long grey arm.
"Mewtwo... I'm in here, Mewtwo." came a voice, startling him into dropping the arm and peering wide-eyed into the bright light. Slowly; his eyes beginning to water (a new experience for him, but one he ignored for the moment), he felt his skin being nourished by the yellow light.

He heard a giggle; and as he groped forward, seeing nothing but yellow rays of an unknown light source, he could practically feel her presence; just darting out of reach continually. "What's this? What am I feeling?"

And she spoke, her voice that of a fairy's as it dances over the blossoms. "That... is the sun." And she giggled once more. "The sun is warm, and bright; and if you look at it too long..."

Mewtwo hesitated in the blissful warmth, aware now that his eyes didn't seem to be working as well now. "What? What happens if you look at it too long?"

Almost as soon as he had finished speaking, his body was in agony; his skin blistering with an unthinkable amount of heat. He tilted his head back and screamed; a shrill wail not unlike that of a human child, and tried very hard to close his eyes.

His eyes disobeying him; and staying obstinately open, he was dimly aware now that she was merely a foot away from where he floated; burning alive. She smiled at him; her eyes cold. Her mouth moved. What was she saying? Could he still hear?

"You... go... blind." she mouthed; her mouth opening wider and wider in a savage grin which was all the worse when he saw her small teeth bared; the teeth of a child not even yet ten years old.

He screamed once again, willing the pain to subside. But this was her world, and she ruled what happened here. Omnipotently; she could show him wonders of the world he had never seen. But now experiencing this... what was the real world like?

<Why?> he screeched, feeling the flames flicker all the way down to his lungs and ignite his whole body from the inside. <Why did you do this to me?!>

She leaned forward, glossy sea-green hair falling gracefully about her face as she bent. For a millisecond, she was beautiful; a siren-like child who he gazed at imploringly to fix his broken body, which was still burning steadily.

She giggled. "Because you lived."

And Mewtwo, unable to withstand the pain any longer, broke into hoarse shrieks as he writhed in a purple maelstrom of existance. Under his own screams he could still hear her high-pitched voice, still giggling innocently.

It was then that he woke, his form shuddering as the dream-fire dissapated back into his subconsious.
