Part Two: Dick and Jane

The young Trainer spoke of his adventure to his family, deliberately omitting his brief encounter with the two strange Pokémon, and the warning he had been given, to pass on.

The public listened to him and his family, excited of rumours that were already spreading, of a larger island further on from where the boy had landed; untouched as yet by man.

A new exploring phase reached its peak. Not since the discovery of Hoenn had Trainers had been so determined to be the first to reach new grounds. Dozens set off on their equally eager Pokémon, though most came home disappointed after a long journey through never-ending waters.

And Professors scoffed at the idea, stating that if such an island existed, it would have been discovered by now.

The soon-to-be married couple churned through the waters, the woman on her Dewgong, the man on his Gyarados. The woman spotted the blue-brown smudge on the horizon, and shrieked a little in excitement.

The two eagerly stirred their Pokémon on, watching the land steadily become more visible. None were willing to give up and go home now.

Eventually, they reached a long sandy strip of sand, and the Dewgong beached itself with a low cry. The Gyarados roared as the man stepped down off its back after climbing from its head. Recalling both their Pokémon, they ran onto the sand.

Further onto the island, the tree cover dimmed the sound of the surf, a nearly impenetrable canopy forming above them. The woman looked around in delight, noting the pleasant peat smell from the rich soil.

The man found a tree with suitable hand-holds, and quickly scooted up it, thrashing the canopy apart with a free hand, for his higher inspection of the land.

(Green pupils dilated, their size huge, yet hostile)

He whistled in astonishment. "Wow... this place is huge!"

"How huge can it be?" she shot back, staring up the trunk at his near-invisible form.

He came down the tree with a cheesy grin on his face. "It's big enough, Mel. How does Kanto-and-a-half sound for a honeymoon?"

Gasping in delight, she whirled around in a full circle, then turned and began walking further into the forest.

"Let's go look for new Pokémon!" he enthused, and followed her into the trees. Eventually, the tree cover thinned, and turned into a rich grassy field where the first signs of Pokémon habitation became evident.

The man, David, spotted the grazing herd of medium-size Pokémon first. "Hey! I knew it!" he laughed, and sent out his Nidorino, calling for a Poison Pin.

The Nidorino hopped over to the group. One of the new Pokémon raised its head curiously, and sniffed it delicately. Nidorino, eager for a battle, jumped back with an ugly sound in its throat, and fired a volley of poisonous spikes into the other's right shoulder.

"Hur!" it yelled in surprise and pain, retreating into the middle of the group, where it collapsed after limping a few steps.

The Pokémon's eyes simultaneously glowed an azure green colour for a moment, and then turned beady black. Unblinkingly they stared the two humans and the Pokémon down, making no advances nor retreats. The Nidorino growled.

"This doesn't look too good, honey. Maybe you shouldn't have hurt the poor thing." Melissa urged. "Maybe we should just go."

"Get lost!" he retorted. "Nidorino was just getting warmed up. If only they would get out of the way; then I could catch a new Pokémon for my team. I want to go home with at least one!"

He cast his eyes over the silent, staring, colony; and spotted a different, smaller looking creature to the left which looked like a prevolution. "Nido! That one! Bite it!"

The Nidorino dodged and wound its way around the others, and reached his target, opening his jaws.

The little one's screams split the air. The group seemed to swell with fury as the mother of the prevolution roared in anger, and leapt for Nidorino, who met the tackle with a brandish of spikes.

The group stepped forward in absolute synchronisation, eyes hard with anger, and the woman groaned at the way they seemed to always get into trouble wherever they went. She backed away quickly towards the trees. The Pokémon would not be able to travel the way they were, if they followed the humans into the trees.

Backing into the cover of the trees, she stepped backwards, eyes still on the advancing Pokémon. As soon as she could no longer see the open field, she breathed a sigh of relief and bent down, unaware that she had been so stressed.

Backing away still more, she perhaps reached a foot in length before she backed against the waxy trunk of a green-barked tree. Shaking her head, she turned left, to find that way blocked by a large trunk as well. She turned to the back, again, and then to the right; shaking as she saw all ways towards the beach were blocked to her.

Well, I'll just have to backtrack, then, and avoid the field. Then I can meet up with David at the beach.

She turned to the front once more, and shrieked. Not even ten centimetres before her was another tree that had not been there before, effectively blocking her from going anywhere. How is this happening?! she screamed, but whether in her mind or in her throat, she did not know.

Shaking terribly, she practically ignored the tendril of liana that coiled into her hair, trying to see past the thick trunks to where David was. Another vine twirled around a coil of her hair, which she waved away with her right hand, still with her head darting left and right.

The vine snapped neatly round her hand after retreating a bit, and instantly sent suckers out to fasten round her fingers. She brought it down, disbelieving, and unable to even make a sound, let alone the scream she was sure was just beyond her throat.

A growling sound came from above her. She slammed her hand down to her side just as the vines ventured to her face, and turned her head up. There were teeth and-

David cursed as he again backed into the trunk of tree, just at the border of the forest. It was time to do, or die. "Nidorino!" he roared, trying to locate his prize Pokémon in the broiling circle. "Self-Destruct!"

There came an inhumane squealing in the center of twisting bodies. And then a tearing sound, as the screaming stopped. Nidorino... he gaped, unable to believe it when the group of still-furious-looking Pokémon turned from the middle of the circle. One held a limp purple ear in its teeth.

And then they came for him.
