Summary: Ash and Misty are all dressed up, with no-one to go with... except each other.

Speech. Thoughts. Lyrics.

Ash sighed as Brock and Tracey finished getting ready. “Man, tonight gonna be amazing!” Brock crooned, smoothing back his short brown hair. Ash rolled his eyes. ‘He’s just happy cause he’s got a date... Probably his first one ever...’ Tracey sighed and re-arranged his jacket, deciding at the last minute to remove the headband that usually held back his long bangs... “I hope the professor won’t be mad at me for going with his grand-daughter...” Brock clapped his friend on the back. “Dude, she asked you. He can’t complain about that.” Ash sighed heavily, causing his two older friends to look around at him. “Ash, if you wanted to go to the party, you should have asked someone...” Tracey shook his head and checked that his fly was done up. “Yeah, like maybe Misty...” Brock smirked, watching Ash’s face reflected in the mirror. Ash glared at them. “She’s my friend... friends don’t ask each other to fancy parties... where there’ll be dancing... and stuff...” he trailed off. Brock and Tracey glanced at each other and sighed. “Well, okay then. We’ll see you later.” They gave each other a high five and went downstairs to meet their dates.

Ash sighed and went downstairs, where he was surprised to see Misty talking to his mother. “Ah, Ash. Come here, please.” Ash walked into the kitchen and leaned against the wall. “What is it?” Delia crossed her arms and glanced at each of them in turn. “You two are the only ones left here tonight. I was hoping to have some quiet time, by myself, but with you here, I can’t.” Ash shrugged. “Sorry.” Misty blushed. “I can’t help it if there’s no-one around worth going to the party with.” Ash rolled his eyes. “I thought Gary asked you?” Misty snorted. “Please, as if I’d ever go anywhere with that creep! Once a jerk, always a jerk...” she muttered. Delia cleared her throat. “Well, you two will just have to go together, because I want my quiet time. Now go and get ready.” Ash and Misty stared at her in shock. “You’ve gotta be kidding me?!” Ash mumbled. Misty just shook her head quietly, not daring herself to speak. “Now.” Delia pointed towards the stairs. Ash recognised the look on her face, and knew that she was serious. Slowly, he turned and went back upstairs, followed nervously by Misty.

Ash waited in the living room, feeling uncomfortable in the suit that his mother had given him. It wasn’t that it didn’t fit, but he was so unused to dressing up that it didn’t feel right to him. “Owww...” he felt a sharp pain and turned to find his mother calmly trying to comb his hair. “Hold still.” She commanded. “It’s hard to do that when you’re ripping my head off...” Ash half-growled. “Um, do I have to do this?” Misty’s voice came down the stairs, and even Ash could tell that she was nervous. “Yes.” “Are suits and gowns normal dress for Pallet Town parties?”  Delia abandoned her attempts to control her son’s hair and stood at the bottom of the stairs. “Yes, always. Now, come down and let’s see how that dress looks on you.” Misty sighed and nervously walked down the stairs. ‘Ugh, this feels so wrong...

As she came into view, Ash’s jaw dropped. Misty was wearing a strap-less pale blue gown with matching Cascade Badge earrings, darker blue high heeled shoes, with her hair down framing her face and pale pink lipstick her one concession to make-up. A million thoughts rushed into Ash’s mind and above them all, one stood out. ‘She’s... beautiful...’ “My, you look beautiful dear.” Delia exclaimed. “Yeah, I guess...” Misty mumbled, glancing at herself in a nearby mirror. “I really don’t like wearing dresses though... I never felt comfortable in them... it’s kinda more my sister’s thing...” Delia smoothed out a crease in the gown. “Nonsense dear. You look perfect. Now, go.” Grabbing Ash’s arm as she went by, she almost pushed the two teenagers out of the door, and they heard the distinctive sound of the lock clicking into place.

The sound of nervous laughter and music poured out of the hall as Ash and Misty stood outside, nervously wondering what was going to happen. Misty sighed. “Well, we’ve gotta go in at some point. I don’t think your mother is gonna let us back in the house anytime soon...” Ash sighed. “Yeah...” He rubbed the back of his head. Misty shrugged. “We’re here together... so we might as well go in together...” She blushed and nervously took his hand. Ash felt a strange movement in the pit of his stomach that reminded him of the one he got right before a big important battle, and blushed. “O-kay...” he squeaked, his voice cracking slightly from nerves as they walked towards the door.

Brock’s jaw dropped as he glanced towards the door and saw his two younger friends walk in, holding hands. He leaned over and nudged Tracey, who turned. “What?” “Look at that.” Brock pointed. Tracey’s mouth opened in shock. “So much for ‘I can’t ask a friend out.” He smirked. Brock grinned. “Yeah, it’s about time.” “Let’s leave them alone, see what happens.” Tracey turned and whispered into his dates’ ear, causing her to glance over to the door and giggle. “Right.” Brock led his date away, out of sight of the two nervous teens standing just inside the door.

Ash and Misty silently waited at a small table, sipping on a couple of drinks. Misty sighed as a song ended, and drained the plastic cup, pushing it to the center of the table with the three others she’d had before. ‘I guess I should ask her...’ Ash sighed and stood up. “Um, Misty... er, do you wanna... um, dance?” he blushed. Misty looked at him and shrugged. “Okay, if you want to...” she quietly stood up, and walked with Ash over to the dance floor.

The music of the next song started filtering through the crowd, and Ash and Misty both blushed as they realized they’d agreed to a slow dance. Misty slowly moved her hands to Ash’s waist, blushing fiercely and avoiding eye contact. Ash shivered from the contact and carefully placed his hands on her hips, moving side to side with the music, eyes turned away.

What day is it?

And in what month?

This clock never seemed so alive

I can't keep up

And I can't back down

I've been losing so much time

'Cause it's you and me

And all other people

With nothing to do

Nothing to lose

And it's you and me

And all other people

And I don't know why

I can't keep my eyes off of you

Ash risked a glance, and saw with shock that Misty had her eyes closed, lips moving silently to the words. Straining, he could just hear her singing softly along.

All of the things

That I wanna say

Just aren't coming out right

I'm tripping on words

You've got my head spinning

I don't know where to go from here...

'Cause it's you and me

And all other people

With nothing to do

Nothing to prove

And it's you and me

And all other people

And I don't know why

I can't keep my eyes off of you...

Misty’s hands slowly wrapped around his waist, and as she drew in closer, Ash’s mind filled with wild thoughts. Most of them, he couldn’t do in such a public place, and he silently cursed his sixteen year old body.

There's something about you now

I can't quite figure out

Everything she does is beautiful

Everything she does is right...

Ash watched Misty’s face as they slowly moved to the music, and barely even noticed her open her eyes and looked directly at him. Blushing, she glanced away, but came back, and stared at him. ‘Should I...’ she bit her lip nervously.

'Cause it's you and me

And all other people

With nothing to do

Nothing to lose

And it's you and me

And all other people

And I don't know why

I can't keep my eyes off of you

'Cause it's you and me

And all other people

With nothing to do

Nothing to prove

And it's you and me

And all other people

And I don't know why

I can't keep my eyes off of you

Brock and Tracey watched from a distance as Ash and Misty stopped dancing and stared at each other. “Come on...” Brock hissed, his fingers crossed as Tracey quickly grabbed a napkin and a pencil and started sketching the scene.

What day is it?

And in what month?

This clock never seemed so alive...

Slowly, their lips met, and Ash’s head buzzed with electricity. Reluctantly, they pulled away, blushing fiercely. “That was...” Misty smiled and leaned forward, kissing him softly on the cheek. “...Nice.” Ash gulped. “Misty... will you, be my girlfriend?” he closed his eyes, dreading the answer. Misty smiled and leaned forward again, this time, kissing him directly on the lips, causing his eyes to dart open. “Yes.” She whispered. Brock and Tracey quietly smirked over in their corner, not realizing that their own dates were getting annoyed with their lack of attention.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.

The courage to change those things I can.

And the wisdom to hide my brothers’ body if he continues to annoy me...

AMEN.

As you can probably tell, my older brother was being a total pain in the arse as I was writing this. He had this movie on way too loud in his room, and I could hear it from mine. (our rooms are not next to each other...) The music in this movie was irritating me, and breaking my concentration, and he refused to turn the stupid thing down. So, even though I’m an Atheist, I still felt the need to do the above prayer. Which just goes to show how annoying he is.

PROFESSOR WOLFSBANE.
