Part 5: Trying To Solve the Riddle!

RP: Last time, our heroes ran into a young man wearing a cloak, who acted quite mysterious, and suspicious.  He gave them some information and advice about the gym leader of Lost Kage Island, but it just left everyone stumped.

Ash Title: Trying To Solve the Riddle!

"What was all that about?" Misty questioned after the strange person had left.

"Good question."  Kenji folded up his map and pocketed it.  "Looks like we're going to camp out since we can't find the ocean of all things."

Misty put a hand to her ear.  "We seem pretty close to it.  I can hear it clearly."

"So can I, which is why I'm so confused as to why we aren't there yet."  Having grown up around water, both he and Misty could hear a body of water within a 1600 meter (about a mile) radius with no problems at all, and can also tell when near by their surroundings, or by the animals that may be in the area.  Kenji was especially good at this, since he was very good at observing.

"Never mind that," Ash interjected seriously.  "We have to figure this out, and I don't know about you guys, but I don't really want to camp out tonight."

"Do you have any idea as to what he could've meant, Misty?" Brock asked.  "You're pretty good with riddles."

She shook her head.  "I have no idea, but let's recap everything he told us."  Everyone thought back to all that was told to them. "Hmm, let's see now.  We already know what he meant when he went on about how one must be skilled and quick to beat the leader…"

"…and when he said that one needs rare Pokémon, to beat the gym leader," Kenji added.

"I know!  I know!" Ash waved his arm around, jumping up and down, like an anxious child in school.  "I must have skill and speed to defeat this guy, along with rare Pokémon!  That must mean that the gym leader must battle with some power and rare Pokémon!"  He crossed his arms arrogantly, and smirked.  "Yeah, betcha you didn't know I was so smart, huh!"

Everyone sweat dropped.

"Oh-kay, Ash; yeah, you're smart," Todd humored him, speaking slowly.  "Now, what about the rest of what that guy told us?  That part about needing rare Pokémon and being skilled was the easiest."

"Hmm, 'the way of getting there, is in a way you would least expect it'…" Kenji reminded them.

"…'You must not always believe what you see with your eyes, but with your mind to find your way to Lost Kage Island'…" Misty continued.

Brock rested his chin in the palm of his hand.  "And we have the key of getting to the island."

"I'd take Blaine's riddles any day!"

"It's not like you figured out any of them, Ash; Misty did."

"Well, you didn't either!"

"Quiet guys, I think I may have something!"  Everyone stared at Misty, anxiously awaiting her to speak.  "Now, as we all know, an island is a landmass surrounded by water.  One can normally reach an island by either the sea or by sky.  The way I see it, is that the island isn't really and island, or either we must use our minds to find a way to this island."

"I don't think he meant the island isn't real, Misty, but maybe you're right about using our minds to find our way to the island."

Ash, Brock, and Todd just stared at Kenji and Misty in confusion, who seemed to understand what was going on.  Mewtwo was quiet.  He couldn't really think of a way to contribute anything to the conversation, and was just as confused as the Pokémon trainer, photographer, and breeder.

"We must find a way there, guys!" Misty said, quite excitedly.

"Don't you guys get it?"

The three boys shook their heads.

"There must be a…"

"…tunnel someplace leading up to the island!" Kenji finished.

"Or some type of a secret passage - with a door - which leads up to the island!  It must be a test to all of the trainers to see if they are worthy enough to challenge the gym leaders there!"

"Oh, okay, but where would it be?"

Misty gave Ash an indignant look before answering.  "We can't think of everything!"

"Hmm, I wonder if when he said that we had the key, if he meant that we need it to get there, if we already had it, or if we need to actually look for it."

"Good question, Kenji.  How about we all split up," Brock suggested.  "Since that guy appeared in this clearing, the passageway is probably nearby, so we should search around here."  He counted.  "There are eight of us, including Mewtwo, Pikachu, and Togepi."

"Okay then, Ash, Misty, Todd, and Pikachu should be in one group, and the rest with Brock and me."

"Hey, Togepi stays with me!"

"We're strong men," Brock started to flex his muscles, "we can take care of ourselves.  The Brock has rock hard muscles that can protect everyone!"

"I think the rocks are in his head," Misty sweat dropped.

"You said it," Todd muttered in agreement.

"Kenji, Mewtwo, and I can be in one group, while Togepi stays with you guys."

"Fair enough," Misty nodded.

"I wish I could call Professor Oak, and ask him about the island.  Maybe he could give us some more clues."

"Why didn't you just ask me?"

Ash stared over at Todd in surprise.  "What?"

"I do work for a magazine, you know.  I have to keep in contact with them whenever I'm on assignment.  I have a portable visa-phone with me.  You can use it if you need to."

"Sugoi!!  Arigatou, Toru!"
RP: That translates to..."Cool! Thanks Todd."

Ash took the phone that Todd had handed him and dialed Professor Oak’s number.  In no time at all, a man wearing a white lab-coat, sitting down at a computer appeared on the screen of the small phone.  "Hello?"

"Hi, Professor Oak."

"Oh, konban wa, Satoshi-kun.  Have you gotten the Shadow Badge yet from the leader of the Kage Island gym?"
RP: Konban wa, Satoshi-kun, simply translates to, "Good evening, Satoshi (Ash)."
"Erm, no, not yet, Professor."

Before the old, white-haired man could reply, a woman with long hair, tied in a ponytail, wearing a pink sweater, a blue skirt, and a pair of slippers, spoke up.  "Hi Ash!"

The boy looked quite surprised to see someone so familiar at the lab at such a time.  "Mom?  What are you doing there?"

"I'm just visiting.  It's so lonely up here for the professor, and it's quite boring at home too since you and your friends left."  She did Ash's victory pose.  "I'm just keeping my Professor Oak company."

The boy sweat dropped at his mother's pose.  "Um, what about Mr. Mime?"

"He's at home, keeping everything nice and tidy."  She turned to Professor Oak.  "Now, Professor Oak dear, what would you like for dinner?  For a nice snack, I was thinking about some odango and for the main course, a nice beef curry with some steamed rice."
RP: Odango are Dumplings. This is what everyone calls Serena (dub name)/Usagi (original) in Sailor Moon. Odango atama (dumpling head)/Meatball head American version), or just "odango" (dumpling), because of her hair...they look like two dumplings.

Ash made a face.  "'Dear'?"

"Wow, that all sounds quite tasty."

"If you say so.  I'm in the mood for beef curry myself."  She looked back at the giant screen from the lab.  "Ash dear, I'll talk to you later, and remember to change your you know whats everyday, always wash behind your ears, and make sure you always brush after every meal!"

Everyone started to snicker, minus Mewtwo; especially, Pikachu.

"Yeah, yeah…bye mom," the boy told her hastily, ready for her to go, his face now extremely red from embarrassment.  She blew Ash a kiss before leaving (causing Pikachu to fall over, pounding the ground with his tiny fist, laughing hysterically).  "Well, like I was saying, Professor, I didn't get the badge yet."

"Surprising, Ash.  My grandson is already there, and told me that he was going to battle the gym leader soon, but was still training."

"What?!  How?!"

"What do you mean?"

"How did he get there as fast as he did?!  We're still in Cerulean trying to figure out how to get there!  We can't seem to get to the shore, which you told us to go to, which means, no water, and no boats!  There's only darkness around here and if it's as dark as it is around here where the shore is, I doubt we could use our Pokémon to surf there!!"

"He flew there first class."

Misty grabbed the phone away from Ash.  "That doesn't make any sense, professor!  We were just told that there's only one way to get there, and flying and sailing don't seem to be it!  If he flew there, then we should see it in the distance!  If he flew there, we should've been able to just catch a flight there through the Pidgeot Express!  Earlier, my sisters called up the airline, and said that there were no flights going to such a place as that!"

"Are you sure you're in the right place?"

"YES, I AM SURE!!  THIS IS MY HOMETOWN FOR GOODNESS SAKES!"

"Calm down, Misty, I'm sure there's a logical explanation for this.  My grandson got there with no problems at all.  I haven't the slightest idea as to why you all are having so much trouble."

Ash grabbed the phone back from Misty.  "Take a look, Professor."  He turned it away from him, so that the professor could see the clearing they were in, which seemed to be a dead end.  "There is nothing here, 'cept for more trees, and the ocean is really close to us, yet, we can't get to it."

"Oh, wait," Ash turned the phone back onto himself, "I do remember now.  Gary didn't fly there.  He flew to the Sea Foam Islands from Vermillion a few weeks back when he was on vacation."

Everyone groaned, but Misty was the angriest and most short-patient of them as of the moment.  "Then how did he get there, you old kook!!"

"Boy, no need for name-calling…"

"Yeah, Mist, take a chill pill."

"Chill this!!"  She smacked Brock in the back of his head with her fist.  "I'm hungry, cold, pissed, and I want to be in a nice warm bed, and take a nice hot bath!"

Professor Oak sweat dropped from Misty's outburst.  "Did you encounter a strange man there?"

"Yes, sir."

"Okay, this is what you do.  Take twenty paces to the left, then take ten paces back, then ten paces to the right, and finally, take five paces to the left.  You will be there."

"What?"

"My mistake, Ash; I was watching a movie on PCM, a westernized movie by the name of Treasure Island.  The people of that country have some pretty strange movies."
RP: For the record, what I mean by "westernized" which I failed to mention earlier, is Americanized or something American-influenced.
"Not as strange as you," Misty grumbled under her breath, everyone else pretty much thinking the same thing.

"This movie is quite interesting," he went on, "but I notice they don't have many anime movies, like we have here.  It seems that most animated movies, or animated television shows in general there are aimed towards young children instead of all ages, like it seems to be here.  Can you imagine something like that?"

"Um, Professor Oak," Ash sounded desperate now, as he heard an owl hoot, "we need help here.  The Kanto Pokémon League Games is less than two weeks away now; I need some new Pokémon to train and I have to battle the gym leader there to even qualify for the league."

He nodded wisely.  "Yes, the gym leader there is supposedly pretty tough.  Gather as many rare Pokémon as you can from that island.  It is said that the Pokémon the leader has there is very tough, and has no known weakness that one has actually discovered."

"And how do we get there?"

"Oh, that's easy, Misty!  You should have figured out the riddle."

Before Misty could blow her top, Kenji intervened.  "Do you have any other information about the island?"

"Hmm, well, this place is a bit enchanted.  You also wouldn't reach it the way you would a normal island, so, in other words, you can get there by neither boat nor plane."

"Wow, but how do we get there then?" Ash asked.  "The cloaked guy told us that we were already there, and that we had the key."

"Well, I guess you're a lot closer than you all realized."

"What do you mean?" Brock asked curiously.

"Well, to get there, all you have to do is---"

"Okido-hakase!!  Okido-hakase!" Ash called out, shaking the phone.
RP: Okido-hakase is a formal name used for Prof. Oak, which I didn't really explain thoroughly earlier. The "hakase" means doctor, but not necessarily "medical" doctor, and yes, he is referred to in this fashion for the original.

"What's wrong, Ash?" Kenji asked.

"The phone went dead!"

Todd gave off a nervous laugh.  "Um, well, hehe, I guess I forgot to charge the battery before we left."

"Todd!!" Ash glared, handing him back his phone.

"Sorry, I guess it slipped my mind to charge it while at Misty's sisters."  He put it away.

"That old kook!  He didn't help us at all!"

A thick fog began to form once again in front of the group, and they all heard someone laughing at them, as if they were some kind of a comedy act.  When the fog cleared, the cloaked man was once again in their presence, his hood still casting shadows about his face.

"Well, well, well, if it isn't the twerps again.  I guess you haven't figured it out yet, even though you're closer than you think, thanks to that red-headed beauty," he winked to her, "and the researcher over there."

"Go away!  We don't need your help!"

He ignored Ash, and continued to give his advice.  "Rare Pokémon are the key to getting to and from the enchanted island.  Without one, you'll never find your way there."  He laughed at them.  "All of you are pathetic if you can't figure out something this simple."

"Pathetic!"  She set Togepi down by Pikachu.  "I'll show you pathetic!"

Misty was stomping towards the young man, about to punch his lights out, when Brock held her back…
x x x x x x x x x x
RP: You know, like how he did in the ep Princess vs Princess after she knocked out Ash. lol
x x x x x x x x x x
"Hold on Misty, let's see what he has to say first."  Misty grumbled slightly, but after showing that she would cooperate, Brock let her go.

"Like you idiots could ever figure anything out," the cloaked stranger scoffed.

":Idiots!!  Idiots this!:"  Pikachu let off a powerful Thundershock towards the young man, but he dodged it like it was nothing, by gracefully back flipping, the tiny bolt hitting the spot he was once in.  Everyone looked on in disbelief.

"No human dodges Pikachu's attacks, unless Pikachu actually misses," Ash gaped.

The boy's hood slipped slightly, but he pulled it right back on before anyone could notice.  "Hey, kid, I challenge you to a match."

Ash couldn't resist a match, of course, and jumped to the challenge.  "You bet!"

"Two on two battle."

"Right!"

"I'll go first."  He pulled back his cloak slightly, as he unhooked one of the small, red and white spheres attached to his belt.  He pushed the small button on the front of the sphere, which caused the sphere to grow in size.  It was now as big as his hand.  "Pokéball, go!"

The sphere made a "popping" sound, as a bright red light shot out from it.  After the light died, there stood a Pokémon, that everyone stared at in amazement.

"What kind of Pokémon is that?" Todd asked, obliviously going towards his camera…

RP: What is up with this mysterious person? Why does he continue to bother Ash and his friends just to challenge Ash? What kind of Pokémon did this stranger have? Tune in next time for part 6.
