Chapter four; Loving the Aliens

Though Jessie knew that she was taking a huge risk going through the open air market dressed as an outsider, she felt she had to. It was the quickest way to get to her old house. Jessie had ingeniusly smeared blood over herself earlier, hoping to mask her scent; Primaves could always tell when one of their own had been mingling outside of their somewhat sheltered world. She had nightmares about returning to this place, her hometown. But now that she was here, she knew she had to suck it up. Jessie couldn't let James share her fate.

It took longer than she remembered to reach the old tenement her family had once shared with two other families. But now, it was totally vacated, as were all the tenements. The Primave Elders who ran the town had long since taken the people out of poverty, but for a price. She had been living there when it happened.

Primave wasn't always called Primave; It was once Eldolon City, so named because of the fog that had always covered it. For that reason, Eldolon wasn't visable until you were right up on it. That's why the Primaves took such a liking to it.

They were a race that had been all but destroyed. Only five were left of their once 200 member group. True, 200 people aren't too many, but it was enough. They were such a bloodthirsty people, literally. People all over the world made up folk tales about them. But they were so afraid to anger this superior race that they rearranged the letters of their name, hoping that would be enough to ward off their wrath. Thus, in stories concerning them, PRIMAVES became VAMPIRES, elegeant, sanguinary creatures that only came out at night. Of course, anyone who knew anything about the real vampires knew that they could walk around in full light; they just wouldn't kill you then. They were smarter than that. And they didn't just pounce on you and sink their teeth into your flesh as so many authors portray. Each vicim went through religous rites, purifieing the blood and praying to their god before the feast. Of course, this was only for human blood, they drink from animals whenever and however they chose.

They came to Eldolon City in 1904, in search of a place to take over. Primaves had always been a nomadic race, and that fact had partly led to their scarcity. These five had realized that and had decided it was time to settle down. They disguised themselves as refugees from a foreign warring, and the kind hearted people gladly took them into their homes, fed them, and taught them the language they already knew so well. In no time, they took over the town, killing every man in their small army. They split the town into five districts, one for each of them. Delilah, Damien, Desiree, LaDominique, and Dandre. Damien took over the rundown part of town, with the tenements and the shacks. He took every family, including Jessie's, and put them up in the palace on the hill with him and the other five. Everyone was exstatic, finally out of poverty. What they didn't know was that Damien was going to kill off most of them, since they were too weak to be of any use. When he got to Jessie's family, which, then, consisted only of her father, her brother and her sister, her mother having left for Team Rocket, a then new organization. He relentlessly slaughtered her father but took pity on the weeping 7 year old Jessie and her siblings and took them in as his own.

They went through the rites, as did any other Eldolonians who the Primaves felt had proved themselves worthy of serving the Primave Elders. But they weren't put through the same rites that their victims were put through; they were different, harsher in a way. By the end of the seven days, eldolonians who had gone through the rites were neither dead nor alive. They lingered on the fence between death and life, never aging- For ninety years, Jessie stayed a cute, sweet, seven year old girl, while her sister remained ten and her brother eighteen.

The first year was wonderful. Damien, who insisted on being called "Father" by the three children bought them gifts, anything they had ever dreamt. Jessie and her sister Flavia dressed in the latest fashions while her brother Kim had every book he had ever heard of. Later, he gave them their last names depending on what he thought of them. He called her sister Flavia Flaxen, her brother Kim Bright, and her Jessica Rose, he had said, because of her astounding beauty. That's when the trouble started.

He often told her how beautiful she was and would remain-just before he molested her. Flavia didn't understand how bad this was and was often jealous of her. Kim, however, did. He tried desperately to fight him off of Jessie, but failed everytime. One day ninety years after "the incident", in those rare days when the children were left alone while Damien and the others fed, Kim had a long talk with Jessie. He had told her that, during his explorations of the castle a few yeares ago, he had found a special necklace. This necklace was very important, he said, because it would stop Damien from hurting her or anyone else ever again. He told her that he had hidden it in their old house and had told her what to do.

"But Kim," she had said,"I don't wanna. Why can't you do it?"
"It has to be you. The necklace has chosen you."
"Father loves us, why should we hurt him."

"He doesn't love us. He loves our bodies; we are very useful to him. Only you can do it, only you can end this evil, forever." he looked up to the sky."Only you can free us from the lifetime of slavery we are fated for."

Jessie's 7 year old mind that, along with her body, that never developed, couldn't understand this. As far as she knew, her big brother was trying to hurt her daddy. She ran off, not sure what to do. That night, when Damien returned, he took Jessie to his room. Kim burst in and knocked him out by hitting him over the head with a shovel, or so it appeared.

"See Jessica?" he said gently."He doesn't love us. He wants to hurt us." she backed away, scared. Damien had risen behind Kim. He stabbed Kim through the heart with a dagger and made some type of incantation she didn't understand. Before her eyes, Kim's spirit left his body, brushing against Jessie as he ascended into the sky. Jessie froze in her place and looked at Damien, a horrific expression on her face. He only smiled at her and outstreatched his arms.

"Don't worry. Everything's going to be fine now. That mean old Kim won't hurt Father anymore."

She backed away."You...killed...Kim."

"Well," he continued, in his honey sweet kindergarden teacher voice,"Kim was a bad boy; he had to be punished. But you're a good girl; and you must be rewrded."

Jessie backed away further, into the hall." YOU... KILLED...KIM!" she screamed.

"Now Jessica-" he didn't have a chance to finish. She sprinted out of the castle and out of the town, faster than he thought any human, especially one cursed as a servant. She wandered around Vermillion City for a few hours before a police officer took her to the orphanage. That's when she began to age, when she left what was now called Primave City. She stayed there until she looked ten, when she was permitted to leave to apply for nurse school. Four years later, after she had become very street smart, her abuse finally hitting her psychologically, she met James. He was being beat up by a gang who accused him of being uppity because of his nice clothes. She had no trouble warding them off.

"Are you Ok?"

"Yes." he had squeaked out. They had beaten him within an inch of his life. He passed out.

She carried his tired body back to the dorm room she occupied by herself ; the girl who had shared it with her was so afraid of her that she had moved out a while ago and noone else had moved in since. She nursed him back to health, and that's how she met her best friend.

All of these memories had come rushing back to her as she walked hastily through the shadows to her old house. She could remeber how kim had told her he had written of how the Primaves how taken over Eldolon and had hidden that with the necklace. Jessie hoped that she could find both that and the necklace at her old house. When she got there, it had all but crumbled to the ground. She carefully went inside and rumaged though her family's belongings, but to no avail. Jessie knew it had to be there though. She opened the door and looked around. The area was completely secluded. She decided to bring James and Meowth there-they would probably end up spending the night anyway, she thought. This way, she would have more time to look for the necklace and she would be able to protect her friends.
