Violet giggles quietly as she studies the menu. Being beautiful is wonderful – she can always have whatever she wants. The man sitting across from her is geeky, awkward, and nervous. His glasses keep sliding off the bridge of his nose, and his gray suit jacket is rumpled. He is wearing brown socks tucked into his sneakers, even though he tries to hide them underneath the table.

            What a dork.

Nonetheless, he is paying for the meal, so she beams at him, and orders filet of sole in wine sauce, and a light salad. She has to keep her figure, after all!

Jan feels sweat beading on his forehead. He wants to wipe it off with his handkerchief, but that would be rude. He cannot believe Violet accepted his offer of a date! Her laugh sounds like music to his ears, and in his shock, he stammers out an order for lobster, forgetting that he is allergic to shellfish.

Soup arrives first, clear with a sprig of parsley floating in each. It is accompanied by a breadbasket and butter.

“Um,” He tries to think of a conversational topic. “Do you like music, Violet?”

She titters, picking up a wheat roll. “Well, I adore opera.”

Opera! He knows nothing about opera! “What about classical music?” He hazards a guess.

Violet looks at him. “I like it.” That’s a lie. She positively abhors it, except for when they need it as background music to their water ballet.

“Wonderful!” Jan bursts out. “I’m having a concert this month. Would you like to come?”

No, she does not want to, but she needs to charm him enough to pick up the tab, so she flutters her eyelashes instead. “I would love to.”

He cannot believe it! This date is going wonderfully!

She smiles as he talks about his violin lessons and all the hardship he has been through. He wishes to apply to the Music Conservatory in Ecruteak City, but it is so far away. And the competition is fierce…

Jan is such a bore. She keeps smiling, all through dinner, though he doesn’t touch his plate once – is he infatuated enough? After dessert, tiramisu for her and a huge slab of chocolate cake for him, he walks her home.

It is a step down. She had hoped he would have a car, but he had her meet him at the restaurant. That should have been a sign already.

He is so not worth it.

Violet blows him a kiss, before closing the door. Then, she goes upstairs to take a long, hot bath. She settles in the tub with a romance novel and a box of chocolates, and promptly puts him out of her mind.

He is unaware, and falls asleep in his cheap apartment, a happy man.
