A loud cry split the air.

Red mumbled softly and snuggled back up to his wife. Half-asleep, he barely registered the significance. Neither did she – she had taken her sleeping tablets before bed and had not even stirred.

            There was another yell.

Someone next door was having sex again, he decided. That was one of the problems with apartment life. He reached onto the night table for his ear plugs, secured them, and closed his eyes, trying to fall asleep. Moments later, he was snoring softly.

When morning came, Lance was making breakfast when a knock came at the door. It was a policeman.

One of the tenants had fallen out of their window last night while drunk. He was now dead. Had they heard anything?

Red had to take a deep breath before he could confess that yes, he had heard something but had judged it unimportant – it had been 3 A.M.! He described the two yells.  Lance explained that she took pills and was thus dead to the world.

The officer of the law left, soon, but the mood was ruined.

“I can’t believe it…” He shook his head.

“Death happens,” She responded, practical as always. The bacon had burned to charcoal, alas, but she quickly mixed flour, egg, and water with a dash of salt and sugar, red bean paste for filling, and fixed him steamed buns instead.

            Red ate mechanically.

She did the same, and on they went with their lives. In a week, the incident was forgotten. It was not, after all, personal enough to make a difference, nor to rouse fury out of sleeping breasts. It was only an accident.
