Red snuggles into Lance’s arms as he listens to the Dragon Master speak. His voice is very soothing, though it’s a bit strange that he reads fairy tales to his pokemon. Lance adjusts his reading glasses, but proceeds on, until the tale is over and Rumplestiltskin is dead and the Princess’s baby goes free.

Red doesn’t think that story is very fair, but he says nothing. The dragons curled around the field listen intently, and Lance smiles, moving on to the next tale of Hansel and Gretel, which is actually quite scary!

He doesn’t remember hearing these before. Lance checks his watch, before standing up and brushing bits of grass off his pants.

“Come on, Red. We should be getting back now.”

Red pouts, but obeys. They walk back three blocks in silence. Afterwards, they have dinner in the cafeteria as usual, before they part ways for the night.

It becomes a routine of sorts. Red likes stories, so he follows Lance every afternoon. Lance gives him strange looks the first few times, and then quits thinking about it.

Red is still a child after all, and he probably likes fairy tales.

They don’t get to Sleeping Beauty and Snow White until several weeks later, since Lance dislikes those silly, soppy tales and leaves them for last. But when Red asks him if kissing is really that special, he gives the boy a demonstration that leaves him gratifyingly starry-eyed.

Kisses are special, Red thinks, as Lance pulls away. It feels nice, really nice, and he feels little butterflies in his stomach, in a good way.

He wonders if Lance will do it again.

Lance has to remind himself that Red is still a child, but kissing is all right, right? As long as they don’t do anything else, it will be okay, so it doesn’t matter if they cuddle a bit after story telling time.

No one has to know, after all, and Red doesn’t mind.

Sometimes, they’ll switch off. He can practice his reading skills, after all, and if he stumbles over words sometimes Lance won’t scold.

The Almond Tree really makes him hate stepmothers, Puss in Boots makes him giggle and head out to catch a Meowth, and when he hears the story about the little mermaid he spends two weeks at the beach hunting for a mermaid before Lance reminds him gently that stories are just stories.

He may not be a Princess, or a clever youngest daughter, Red thinks, and Lance isn’t a Prince, but they can still live happily ever after, so he decides to do just that.

            And they do.
