Cypress, he’s knocking back his third drink, blowing smoke, looking at the girls in their feathered boas and glitzy bikinis, garter straps to thigh-high polished black leather boots. He’s rooting around in his wallet for another grubby handful of bills when he sees, out of the corner of his eye, a vaguely familiar woman in sequined gold with a peacock-blue tail. He signals the barkeep, orders another shot of vodka, and is on the point of ordering a private lap dance when he realizes who she is.

Delia tosses back bleached-blonde ringlets, dark mascara around her eyes, purses ruby-red lips, and shrugs.

After all, a working girl has to earn her money somehow, and what with Cypress being such a deadbeat trainer, never dropping home to see Ash once in the past eight years, she’s got to keep up appearances.

After all, at this rate, Ash will never find out. She watches as Cypress stumbles out of the bar, ashen-faced, and wonders why she ever fell for him.

Oh well. Past is past, and in the present, there’s a man in the corner giving her the eye, so she sashays over and gets down to business, as he fondles her breasts.

Another day, another dollar, another lie, and another hope that Ash stays clueless. She grabs Cypress’s abandoned glass, takes a swig to forget, and moves.

And that’s the way things are.
